I basically only bring slacks or jeans to be hemmed, but would not hesitate to bring any type of clothing for tailoring to Sanita. I am always greeted very warmly and professionally and the work/tailoring always exceeds my expectations. You may think that all of these places are the same, but I can assure you they are not. If you've ever had your hem start to unravel, you know what I mean. That never happens here as they take enormous pride in what they do and they always get it right the first time and that is why I keep going back. I can't speak for other customers' experiences, but I had no issues the few times I have been here. I came here a few times for pants alterations, which were $8/pants, and a zipper fix for my winter coat and the work by the employees was excellent. The shop is extremely small and tight, but the ladies here do a good job. At times, their vibe could be interpreted as unfriendly, especially if you've never interacted with them, but don't take their curtness for rudeness. In no way does it look like their intention to be unfriendly, but it's just the way they operate - quick and to the point. In addition, they don't speak fluent English, so sometimes things can get lost in translation. If you DO need any type of alterations or clothing fixes, all you have to do is walk in, present to them what you need done and they'll take a look at it on the spot and let you know if it can or cannot be done. If whatever you need can be done, they'll fill out a receipt for you with the date you came in, what the work is and how much it might cost. When your clothing is ready, they'll give you a call and you can come in to pick it up. It's that easy or at least those were the experiences I had and each time was a replica of the previous. Came here for wedding dress alterations because I saw glowing reviews and my coworker highly recommended for her wedding dress alterations. I needed cups adjusted, hemming and bustle. When I first called, they told me 1 month before would be more than enough time for sure so I followed their schedule. On the first appt, she measured the length needed to be adjusted and told me she would adjust the cups. When I came back on the 2nd appt, she barely hemmed it so it needed to be hemmed again and I didnt really feel the cups were adjusted but it wasnt a huge deal at that point. After she measured me again, she told me to pick it up 5 days before my wedding and I asked her several times if it was going to be completely ready and she reassured me it was fine. In addition, I also noticed a few beads falling off the waistline and she said she would take care of it. I was getting worried, but I trusted her because she seemed knowledgeable. For my 3rd and last visit, I found that the final alterations were way too long along the sides and back even with the bustle pinned up and there was nothing done about the beading. I was disappointed and mostly focused on addressing the length. I told her that i felt very insecure about doing my first dance which is a waltz without tripping over it and she explained that was just how the bustle is going to be because of the shape of the dress. I wish she had mentioned that earlier for the 2nd fitting. When I went home, I seemed help from my mother in law and she was able to make a second bustle which lifted the dress another 8 inches higher without sacrificing the look. In addition, we used a couple bobby pins the day of to bring the dress up. Overall, I felt like all the lady did was hem my dress and waste a bunch of my time. The place looked very busy and throughout my experience, she seems to keep pushing my fitting dates due to large volume of alterations on her calendar. I wanted to love this place really... But even with really low expectations (I noticed people said the lady is rude and standoffish- I was fine with that as long as the end result was what I wanted), this place still managed to disappoint me. I went in on a Saturday and wanted to hem my wedding dress. My dress was fairly simple. Just needed to hem it and add a belt to the waist. It was super busy when we were there and in hindsight may have been a factor in why it didn't come out properly. I wanted to hem the front of the dress (but keep the back long for a train). All she had to do was the fix the length in the front and keep the back of the dress as is. She said fine and wrote down "back long" on my receipt. I also wanted to sew a belt on it and told her where I wanted it. She even said "this isn't the first time I'm doing this." A little sassy, but I assumed she was right and left it with her. She told me it was $50 (my first time at a tailor but seems pricey for hemming and sewing a belt). I returned in three weeks to pick it up. I tried it on at the place and once I took it out of the bag I noticed how short the back was. I tried it on and she asked me if I liked it. I said, "I asked for a train in the back." And she said "There is a train." And pointed at the little bit (less than 1/2 inch difference in the back). She said if it's too long of a train, I will trip. It is a wedding dress. I told her from the beginning I didn't want to have the back hemmed. She said ok but looking back I think she may have been distracted as there were a lot of people in the store. Additionally she even wrote it on the receipt!!! So there is no excuse. At the end, if she decided for me that she didn't want a train because I would trip, it's not a decision she should be making. She gave me the extra fabric from my dress back and you can see she cut STRAIGHT ACROSS with no train in mind. The extra fabric is at least 3 inches which could have been a moderate train in the back. The dress is now out of stock online - therefore I am left without a wedding dress one month before. I cannot in good conscience recommend this tailor, which is such a shame. I really wanted to ask for my money back... I am extremely disappointed and now stuck in a bind. read more

At 5'2" altering the length of almost every article of clothing I buy is a necessity. I would never go anywhere else. My mom and I stumbled over this place when we walked into the tuxedo tailor around the corner to ask about places that do dress alterations. Normally I'd just walk by it - it's this small, side street shop off Bedford and Avenue U that doesn't seem like much. But hell, I needed my bridesmaids dress altered, so we decided to try them out. They didn't disappoint. :) I think the place only employs 2 or 3 people, but they know their stuff. I was pleased with the way my dress was cared for and marked for alteration (I sew myself, so I can be pretty anal about that stuff), and they're very understanding about time constraints for weddings and events and stuff. Could not be more happy with how my dress was tailored! My bridesmaids dress was one size too small and it was too late to return it for a different size.I went around to ask if anyone can tailor my dress and most places said that it's impossible to make a dress bigger. Sonya is a miracle worker. I have been come to her for about five years now, I bring her everything from denim to evening gowns. As first, when you walk in to this place, you get a little nervous- Everything is completely squished, there's barely any room to breathe. The changing room is like the size of a shower stall, but it works. I always bring soya my designer jeans to shorten because she does a fabulous job in under a week, just amazing. She of course matches the thread color, but not only that, she matches the sticking style that was there originally. Shes literally one of the most honest professionals I've ever seen. Countless times shes told me when things didn't need to be altered, or weren't possible to be altered. Unlike others would be like okay give it to me, ill see what i can do, and $20 later, they did nothing and don't give you a refund. One time I wanted boot cut jeans to be made into a straight leg. And she told me right away that she could do it but it would ruin the "effect" of the jean, being that the side hems were darker than the entire light wash jean and she would not be able to preserve the "sleek leg" that detailing created. This was something I had never even noticed or realized, she saw it right away! She is an amazing tailor, and a truly sincere and honest lady. Its very difficult to find a tailor these days that is not at the cleaners. I saw the other reviews and figured I would give this one a try. I gave in 5 pairs of pants. All hems, plus some letting out at the waist. I think they did a great job. The hems are all clean and professional and at the right length. They also had it ready on time. If you're living in Sheepsheadbay area who needs tailoring, come to Sanita's. I have been trying to find some good tailoring shops near my house for awhile and found Sanita's Tailoring. It was a good 10-20 blocks of walking, but trust me, it was worth it. (probably the most exercise I will have day to day basis) I brought a couple of dress pants for tailoring. By the time I received it, I realized the length of the pants I asked for was too short. But Sonia told me they will fix the problem for free. (ofc you have to pay after that) When I got the pants back, the fit was perfect from waist to length. Then nowadays, I keep bringing more and more things to tailor there. And it doesn't even cost alot. So why did I give it a 4 stars? When I brought my pants back again for re-tailoring, Sonia wasn't there. It was one of the worker's attitude. She looked soulless and was not happy that I brought the pants back for retailoring. After evaluating my pants, she asked me for the cost of re-tailoring. Then when I said I talked to the owner about it, another worker pulled her and they spoke in Russian about something. After that, she said okay we'll fix it, but just this one time. Wow sanita and staff are amazing!!!one gown I brought her had a long train which she used to build up the gown, she even put in hidden zippers in the sleeves in order to get the gown on and off. One gown she built up from a second one with a cape and all. the third gown was also made from 2 gowns, she switched the top from one and put it on the bottom. i highly recommend for any tailoring job big or small. This place was rather small and cramped with hardly any room to breathe, but that would be irrelevant had they been able or willing to do the alterations I wanted. I went to it based on the glowing reviews and was left with disappointment. I had just bought a very nice suit that needed its pant legs altered to become more slim. The lady at the counter started bombarding me with a bunch reasons why it could not be done using tailoring terms that I couldn't understand and even suggesting that any alterations wouldn't be worth it anyway because I could just go buy a new pair of pants for the same money. Ye, good luck finding pants of the same fabric and pattern as the jacket of my suit. I almost returned my suit, but thankfully found another tailor in sheepshead bay to do the job perfectly without all of the fuss. Bottom line, this place seems to specialize in minor alterations and make their bread and butter off of that due to the many customers they get. I got the impression that the work I needed done was just not worth it for them because they had tons of other much easier orders already lined up. This place is a gem. My roommate found Sanita kind of by accident a couple of years ago when she was looking for alterations to a bridesmaid dress. For only $40, she received high quality work and was the envy of other bridesmaids (who had paid over $100 at the dress shop). I just picked up my own dress there, and was equally impressed. I had a bridesmaid dress taken in and shortened, and it looked amazing. Throw in two other minor sewing/alterations on other dresses and my bill was still less than $50. If you are willing to make the trip to Sheepshead Bay--and you should be--you will receive very high quality work for an extremely low price. This place does a lot of business, and can do rush jobs, but does not sacrifice quality. Sonya, the owner, is by far more than an expert in her skill. I am one picky person!! Before dropping off my wedding dress at an alterations place, I shopped around. I went to four well-known wedding tailors. Two in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn (Williamsburg Seamster - and the Wedding Dresser - Who by the way was very scary and unpleasant). My dress was couture - a runway piece by Marchesa (delicate and intricate). Therefore it was exclusive, and I was very careful on who was going to do the job. However, I also wanted the job done at a reasonable price. I know the wedding industry and how much they take advantage of brides. The prices just seemed exorbitant for the work needed, And I know they were making a big deal about the whole process... Because that's what they want to make it seem, as if it was a big job. I decided to look one more time and I actually found Sonya on yelp. I thought to myself- let me give a final try and I went to the shop. The second I met with her I realized she knew exactly what she was doing. It made me a little uneasy at times, because for her everything I mentioned I wanted was "yes of course, ok, no big deal"! After the first fitting, I trusted her and all the ladies that work there with eyes closed. I realized that she is an expert! hit of the neighborhood also as she has very loyal long time customers. And her shop is filled with gowns and wedding dresses to be altered. She is Brooklyn's best kept secret!! I became her biggest fan quickly. I have had tons of dresses altered there now and my husband's and groomsman's tuxes were as well. She even did my tablerunners for the event. To top it off she's more than a Seamstress, she's a designer. She knows how to do things and how they should fit... The one thing I wanted was a high neck on my dress...was bummed it didn't have it. I mentioned this in passing and She transformed it overnight from V-neck to a high neck!!! Unbelievable. Needless to say everyone was in love with the one-of-a-kind gown it became. I found this business here on Yelp, I needed to get my measurements for a wedding dress I was ordering online, I was in the area and I called over there first to see if she could do it and how much it would be. Sanita said it was only $5 and to come right over! I was very happy with that price, very reasonable! The shop is very tiny but I guess that is all the space she needs, she had clothes everywhere (but not messy!) so obviously she is very busy. She was very quick and professional and I asked that when my dress comes if I wasn't happy with the beading she stopped me and said "just bring it in and I will take care of it" which I certainly plan on doing !!! Daisy sold and Sonya ended up over at a tuxedo shop where there is now a dunkin donuts...that was short lived, but thankfully, her skill was so in demand, that she was able to branch out and open her own shop. Now, any and all tailoring, there's no question where we're going. From simple hems to full on down coat zipper replacement, she can do it all. I would not recommend this shop. 3 out of the 4 gowns we brought to them were either not done when we picked them up or done incorrectly. When I called to complain, they were not nice. I could not get to them again so I had to bring it to a different tailor, more money. When I told them that, their answer was: unless you bring it to me there is nothing we can do.
