So, I ignored some of the other negative reviews and started going to him because he was close, and he did dozens of alterations for me over years. And he is a con artist. Is he a decent tailor? Yes. 90% of the time the work comes back good; sometimes it doesn't but he fixes it if you notice. But no, you shouldn't go to him. There is a reason he doesn't list prices anywhere. He charges as much as he thinks he can get away with charging you. And he talks a really, really big game about how hard the alterations are, and how no one else does them right, and how he can't make any money on his prices. At first he seemed a little pricey, but the work was good, and again, he was nearby, and he was so friendly. After a while I really thought we were becoming real friends, but it was just buttering me up. And like a sucker, I fell for it. I fell for it so hard that I didn't write this review for a long time because I am so embarrassed by how much money this man took me for. The more I went to him, the larger the "discounts" he claimed to be giving me, but I had this feeling that nevertheless the prices kept going up... and up, and up. Eventually he quoted me prices for two overcoat alterations that were too outrageous for me to swallow. I called seven of the most well-reputed menswear tailors in Manhattan, and all of them quoted me half the cost or less. And I know enough about tailoring to ask for exactly the work i need done, and Hussey had explained exactly what he was going to do, and I explained it exactly to the other tailors. I went back to Hussey to get my coats, and he knew exactly why, and barely would speak to me as he told me not to come back. I now take my work to Wazin Custom Tailors in midtown. They take half as long to do your measurements, they charge has as much, their work is flawless, and they have it done fast, on the day they said they would. Maybe you'll have a different experience, maybe he won't see you as a mark, but he may will smile to your face, butter you up, and rip you off, like he did to me. At least go one block further up Washington to the guy who has his prices posted on the wall. Other things to know: he will take as long to do your work as you let him. It won't be done when he says. It'll only be done when you call or come by multiple times to tell him you need it. Also, if you go there in the evening, you will see his shop is completely infested with clothes moths. Very unpleasant experience working with the tailor. Brought 3 pairs of pants and a dress. All simple hemming. He charged 70 bucks for hemming the pants and, 90 for the dress I don't know what I was smoking to agree with the price. Asked for several fittings and his hours aren't clear and he isn't very communicative. All in all I am not happy with the result in two of the items he worked on and I was charged way too high. read more

The suit was just a basic one from Zara and the fit was all wrong...so many adjustments were necessary and he really did a great job making the suit fit me perfectly. It was pricey (but reasonable for a whole suit) and he explained in extreme detail what he was charging me for and why. Would definitely recommend this place! He can do anything, recut jeans, alter blazers, let out pants, etc. Hussei is probably the most knowledgable person I've ever met on the construction of clothes. Hussey is great. Really nice guy. Very detail-oriented. I've had two dresses altered here. One was a lined shift dress that needed the hem raised. That went well. The other dress was a casual jersey dress with an oddly low neck line that I got on sale. Hussey brought up the shoulders and hence the neck line. He did a great job with so odd seams. It did take several return visits to get it right and I spent more than I would have liked but the work was quite good. Side note: Hussey keeps odd hours and is sometimes in the shop really late. That can be a plus when you're trying to squeeze in a time to get to the tailor. read more

I had some trousers tailored by Hussey. The work was well done and on par with other quality tailors I have used in NYC. Hussey is obviously experienced and works to achieve good results. The reason for my 3 stars is price and that you are being hustled. The cost is extraordinarily high and the explanation for the cost is just ridiculous. He talks in circles about the work he'll have to do making the ordinary seem complicated, repeating every detail of the work over and over and over to the point of exhaustion, saying how it would be less expensive but because of this measurement and that measurement it will be more. I brought him a VERY last minute VERY complicated dress, and he was able to make significant alterations in just two days, in time for me to wear the dress to a wedding (I was a bridesmaid, and had really left the alterations to the last minute). Like others have said, he was a tiny bit more expensive than I would have liked, but I will go back to him in a second the next time I need alterations. He did an amazing job. I went back because I'd bought a dress at a stoop sale that just wasn't going to work; I was hoping Hussey could turn it into a skirt for me. He went above and beyond, taking the trim that ran along the top part of the dress and adding it to the top of the skirt to make a beautiful edge. I didn't think it was possible but he did it!
