I haven't owned a home in 17 years, so it's been a long time since I've had to deal with an a/c repair. My a/c failed after hours on one of the hottest days of the year. For background: My last AC unit was installed in 1989, and my furnace/coil was installed in 2007. When the 30+ year old AC unit failed I began looking for replacement quotes. As the furnace is older but perfectly functional, and I do not plan to stay in the house long term, I specified I was really looking to only replace my AC at this time and not the complete HVAC system. Most other companies wanted to sit me down for 45 minutes and explain the doom and gloom of why I needed an entire system replacement, or a high end efficiency system, when all I wanted was a mid-tier, lower SEER AC unit. When the Altruistic team came out (same day as I requested the appointment), they listened to my ask and did not try and upsell me. They did explain the potential risk of future problems with the old furnace, but also remarked it appeared to be in good condition and perfectly useable. They were in and out quickly, and within hours I received a quote with exactly what I requested, and a secondary quote with the additional upgrades if I desired. My experience does not match other reviews here. I recommend that you keep looking for an HVAC provider who has your interest in mind. I bought a home and wanted the HVAC system checked. A reputable source suggested Altruistic, so I looked them up. I liked what I saw. The brand was refreshing and seemed to represent honesty, service, and integrity. So I gave them a try. A cheery woman answered the phone and made it very easy to schedule. That's where the goodness ended. The two service reps who showed up barely identified themselves to me or told me their plan. They sort of looked past me at the door looking for the HVAC system. Their language skills and rapport skills were not customer-friendly. Due to my curiosity and questions, I did get some good information out of them. I later found out that they were doing an assessment that they could hand off to Altruistic's management in order to make recommendations to me. While they were there I learned that my furnace and blower were fine, my compressor was fine, and my coil needed to be replaced (later verified by two different HVAC providers). They also pointed out lots of little things that weren't perfect. The next day I got a call from an Altruistic manager who suggested that I replace the whole system for many of thousands of dollars -- AND, that they were running a special if I bought now. Surprise. Surprise. I'm having the coil replaced by another HVAC service for $900. This business appears designed not to serve me but to sell me unnecessary equipment and installation. Keep looking. read more
