Sunday morning breakfast while on vacation is as important as football for me. So while in Buffalo I almost lost hope of this pastime tradition until I found "Alton's." Being this far north, breakfast was hard to come by. However on Yelp, a friend of mine, visited this restaurant so I figured, why not. We arrived pretty early, it was great the place opened at six in the morning. Coming inside, the place was pretty spacious and full of wooden trim. Seating was booths on the side and table and chairs in the middle. The waitress, slash, hostess, slash townie, helped us to our seat. She was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about Buffalo. Even though we were decked out in New York Giants gear, she knew what team we were rooting for (joke). After the conversation, we placed our order and she moved quick to get it in. Even quicker, was how fast it got to the table. It came out hot and ready. After which time we started to eat. That is where the success of this place is. The food was great! I enjoyed the home fries the most. Not to beat a dead horse, most restaurants don't make flavorful home fries, some restaurants give you potatoes and ketchup. Even the wheat bread was delicious. I completely would recommend this location to anyone visiting the area. However, you may disagree and enjoy the wait staff conversation more than the food. read more

Went with some friends and I enjoyed my meal. Always appreciate a place I can get breakfast all day so Alton's hit the spot. My friends got few different things since they visitimg and wanted to try chicken Soulvaki. The gluten-free offerings were solid as well for someone in my party. I have enjoyed this diner for decades. The food is good, appropriately, priced, and always fresh ingredients. they keep your drinks filled. The menu was deep. This has a decidedly Greek theme, so there are all kinds of lamb entrées for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and everything else you might expect from a full-service diner. Review posted as part of an effort to AVOID RESTAURANTS who charge money to customers who are already paying GROSSLY INFLATED PRICING FOR RESTAURANT FOOD as it is ----just for the customer to take their meals home! Attention Alton's ----- supply chain pricing is moderating and in fact decreasing according to the US government. So why are customers being charged additional money for a "TO-GO" container on top of consistently inflated pricing? Does Alton's charge customers who "dine-in" an additional FEE to wash their dishes???? Hmmmm?? That seems to be comparable to charging take out customers for a container, right? We all know that a to-go container costs about 5cents from a restaurant supply store- so why are you charging at or around $2 for 2 takeout containers? Really? That is preposterously ludicrous! If no one complains, nothing changes. Next steps....bring your own Pyrex container from home to have Alton's place your to-go food in....OR get take-out meals from another restaurant that DOES NOT charge the customer for a container. Took a friend to eat after a run to the Galleria Mall. I saw the sign and told him I used to go to this restaurant years ago in a different location and they always had excellent food. My friend is the pickiest eater ever but he is still at his plate enjoying every bite. That's very unusual for him. He had a beautiful salad and then a full fish fry. Not once did he negatively comment about anything. He can be tough about the preparations, flavors, size, details and service. Not a peep. I am equally satisfied with every aspect and the prompt service provided by the staff. Our server was Hooper and she is excellent. Very caring and personable. I watched her hustle at a busy dinner hour and she never missed a beat. Nice atmosphere, comfortable, clean and delicious. Did I mention we loved the food. Muwahh. It's so good. We'll be back. When I go to my committee meetings, we pretty much always make it a working dinner meeting and order from Alton's. Many of the times we will all get the chicken souvlaki salad, which this is my favorite place to get it at. Sometimes I'll switch things up and get the country melt, which is also good. I really like the dill sauce that comes with the salad. The chicken and the dressings are full of flavor. My only gripe is that they should put more peppercini in the salad; two just don't cut it. read more

Alton's is a staple for me whenever I'm in the Buffalo area. The food is phenomenal!! We arrived around 11:30am on a Saturday for an early lunch before hitting the road to travel back home. I always get the beef souvlaki platter because it is sooo good!! Love the dill sauce that comes to dip the meat in. The salad is fresh and I love the Greek dressing. Pita is fabulous! My fiancé and I split this as it was early and we needed a light lunch, but normally I'd order a platter for myself. It's so delicious!!! I also love that you can get Loganberry to drink here!! It's about time for an update. I've had takeout from here twice in the last couple of months and each time I ordered the souvlaki wrap. I don't even know how to say this, but it is almost too good to eat. I am not a huge fan of meat and usually pick it out of dishes but this chicken must be marinated in unicorn tears and magic dust because it is SO delicious. Quality chicken that is tender and flavorful. It has the other usual cast of characters, lettuce, tomato, onion, feta and dill sauce all wrapped up in a fluffy warm pita wrap. This was the first time my fiancée and I came to this location. Overall, the service was underwhelming. Only time we interacted with the waitress was the ordering of the food, the bringing of the food, and the check. There were times where we needed something that we asked for that we didn't get, but she never stopped by to see how we were doing, to see if there was anything else we needed. I have never heard of Alton's, so I didn't know what to expect. What a pleasant surprise. I had one of the best omelettes I've ever eaten and the home fries were done perfectly. Food was very good, however they aren't as good at this takeout thing as most other restaurants are. First off they do not offer delivery nor curbside pickup, so you actually have to go inside where several people are waiting in a close proximity. Although ordered at 12:30 for a pickup at 6:00, my dinners were not ready and this I had to mingle amongst the people waiting. Some people did not pay in advance, further adding to the wait and exposure time. Not good. Once I got home Inrealized that the restaurant had the missed the extras that were supposed to be in the order even though you can make those selections from the menu. This is things such as extra Feta or extra Greek dressing. Thats the downside of picking up your order. The restaurant needs to get everything perfect the first time because you can't call the server to your table to fix things. read more

This is a staple in the Cheektowaga area, it can get very busy around the lunch and dinner times but you usually are sat fairly quickly. The prices have gone up a bit but the portions are still huge and make great left overs! Breakfast is served all day and their menu is huge! It will be very hard not to find something to eat as they serve everything! This restaurant has signs posted at every entry point about how unvaccinated customers must wear a mask. Yet they asked me, a vaccinated customer to move when a customer adjacent to my booth was broadcasting misinformation about the vaccine (i.e, he was unvacced). The manager insisted that was his choice and offered to call the police to force me to leave after he verbally assaulted me and flipped me off. So many places were closed on Labor Day, we had a bit of a problem finding somewhere to grab lunch. Alton's to the rescue. And it was MOBBED. We were on a schedule, so when the promised ten-minute wait turned out to actually BE only ten minutes, Alton's scored huge points right off the bat. Despite our server running crazy, we got good service and didn't feel rushed. Food arrived quickly and coffee was refilled often. These folks know how to handle a full house. They have it down to a science. With every table full and a crowd waiting at the door, it got pretty loud, but not so raucous that we couldn't converse comfortably. My grilled portabella sandwich was probably the best I've had. Despite wet ingredients like mushrooms, roasted red peppers and spinach, the fresh, herb-dusted focaccia roll didn't turn into a mushy mess. Wish I knew the secret to their garlic herb mayo, 'cause it was delish. I've always liked feta on a portabella sandwich, but I found I liked the mozzarella on this one even better. French fries were perfect - already seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Even the pickle was good! Most places slap a limp, skinny spear on the plate, but this one was big and crunchy. Having taken a tip from Buffalo's premier Yelper, Fox E., and relying on his encyclopedic knowledge of all things chicken souvlaki, I've become an Alton's man. ****************************** Beginning in the 1950's, Greek immigrants and their children founded many of Western New York's diners, following a model that still includes: long opening hours; a variety of familiar dishes served in surprisingly large portions; and staff who offer familial comfort to those who want it, and leave alone those who want that, instead. However, I did find a recipe, not from Alton's kitchen, but from Towne Restaurant's, included in an article written by Ann Blask. After substituting olive oil and freshly-ground white pepper, I was happy enough with the result to last me until I return to Cheektowaga. Souvlaki Marinade 1 gallon vegetable oil 1/2 cup granulated garlic 1/2 cup salt 1 cup Greek Oregano (not ordinary oregano) 1/4 cup black pepper 2 cups lemon juice (bottled is fine) 1/2 cup vinegar Mix together. Pour over cubed meat and refrigerate for 2-3 days. The longer you soak the meat, the more tender it will be. If the meat is covered in the marinade, it will keep in the refrigerator for a week. Put meat on skewers, alternating with slices of onion and green pepper, and grill. [n.b. This recipe appears to be generic, and would work well for beef, lamb or pork. It's possible to over-marinade chicken, which will make it mushy. I use a vacuum sealer and limit the marinade to 24 hours.] ****************************** But what about the other thing? the homey, hearty welcome that seems to define Greek diners? Last summer, my wife and I found ourselves stranded in Buffalo while Delta figured out how to schedule departures and arrivals for airplanes. We spent extra time and an extra visit at Alton's, tying up space as we whiled a day away. Alton's staff never once made us feel that we were a bother, and, in fact, several of them expressed concern and sympathy for our situation, while feeding us excellent food. Imagine being stranded at your aunt's house as a storm passes by, and you'll have the idea. I don't live in Buffalo. Came here while staying at the Baymont by Wyndham Hotel since they basically share a parking lot; Ordered the buffalo wing dip (pictured), a stack of chocolate chip pancakes and a buffalo chicken wrap to go for later. We also did mozzarella sticks for an appetizer. They came out (not home made but we didn't expect that) and they were lukewarm with cold marinara sauce. Then our entrees came out. Our toast was not toasted? More like sort of stale bread. I was whatever about it but my husband requested his be toasted which our waitress was agreeable to. My eggs were a little runny but home fries were decent and the toast was...bread. I thought the beef option would be more like gyro strips but it was marinated hunks of beef. Tasted fine but not what I expected. My husband said his steak was cooked perfect but his scrambled eggs a little overdone. The waitress completely forgot his toast until the end of the meal and it was burnt. He couldn't eat all of it due to this. The price was below average for our area. Would I come back? We are from Long Island and come to visit our son, we love diners and when my sister and husband also arrived for a visit we found this nice diner near the airport. We all enjoyed our lunch, my sister had the artichoke dip, it came with a good amount of warm pita bread, delicious, big enough to be her lunch. My brother in law and I had the senior dinners, very tasty and again enough portions, my husband had only soup because he had lunch before. Coffee very good and plenty, hot. Started off by ordering a French onion soup. I should of taken a picture cause it looked great but upon sticking my spoon in and getting a first bite I was left with a Luke warm soup that was so disappointing cause the flavor was decent.
