Technicians are in such a rush to get you out of the chair, they forget that if they nick you with the nail clippers you'll bleed. Then seem put out that you're actually upset about it. Another time I was there, the technician filed my toenails crooked and pretended she didn't understand what I was saying when I asked her to correct it. Highly questionable if every technician there is actually licensed with the California Board of Cosmetology. read more

My sister and I like getting our nails done, so when she came to visit me for the first time since I moved to Pasadena, I wanted to include a trip to the salon in our plans. This was a couple months ago, when nail salons exclusively operated outdoors due to COVID restrictions. Unfortunately not many salons were open, especially in Old Pasadena where there is not much sidewalk space, but after much searching I found Altadena. I had high expectations because they have glowing reviews. Luckily they took walk-ins. When we arrived we had to sign in on an iPad and sat six feet away from everyone as we waited. The stations had plexiglass and everyone was wearing a mask, plus they were using sanitizer and wiping surfaces down between customers. Following guidelines: 5 stars. However, the pros end there. The first thing that made me think I probably wouldn't be a repeat customer was that they didn't have a wide selection of polish colors, and no "mermaid" collection (which is offered at most other salons I've been to). The second thing was that my nail technician did not talk to me at any point during the service. She looked and acted as if she was irritated that she had to be at work. Sure, everyone is stressed and I can imagine that it sucks to work outside on a hot day for your entire shift, but an employee's attitude can really be the deciding factor in whether a customer returns or not. I'm gonna be honest and say that this alone was enough to make me not want to come back. Although my nails were shaped well, the paint was a bit hastily applied, and the technician didn't clean up the skin around my nails after she was done. That's a totally normal and regular step of the manicure process, and for her to not see the spots or to not care tells me a lot about her professionalism. The experience could have gone completely different if we weren't in the midst of a pandemic, but the fact is that I came to a place that advertised their ability to do nails even outside, and I left feeling unsatisfied. There are too many nail salons in Pasadena; I don't need to come back here, but I'm not 100% opposed to giving them another chance when they're operating normally. read more

I went into get a pedicure with my mom and wife . I seen this was a new location that had just opened not to far from my moms house and honestly it was a really GREAT PLACE! Very clean , organized, friendly. The prices were good. They offer complementary drinks. That's a first because I've been to a few nail shops around the area and no one has offered me any type of complementary anything. We got 3 mimosas! They have a wife variety of colors and gel colors that's great because i like to have options. Wendy did my pedicure , she was so soft and gentle . She did a AMAZING JOB! She took my ingrown out without hurting me and my toes looked so pretty and clean ! CLEAN CLEAN JOB! Perfect the best pedicure I've had in a while . Jessie did my moms pedicure and she was so friendly very talkative and she made my mom very comfortable she also took out my moms ingrown nails without any pair was very gentle and very efficient. Candy did my wife's pedi and she is extremely picky, she agreed that her pedicure was done very good as well. Over all our experience here was great and we will definitely be going back this is our go new go to spot . If your new here they have a 20% off services since it is a new location. Hard to forget my experience at this nail parlour earlier this week. But well worth the effort! The older woman I had didn't/couldn't communicate AT ALL. She was wearing a mask. But doubt that she'd have spoken even without. I put my ear buds in when I realised. It was hard relaxing otherwise. Often loud and shouty workers conversations across the room. Felt like their private house party at times. I needed to ask for the massage remote! She never tested nor asked me if the foot-soaking water was the right temperature. A mistake. It was super hot. She added some cold and just indicated for me to put my feet in. Again, didn't test it herself. It was still hot. I didn't feel comfortable asking for more cold to be added. It is her job to make sure the water is comfortable for any client. I had to ask her to be more gentle when cutting. Twice she hurt with her small clippers getting into corners. Enough for me to say 'ouch!' out loud as a warning to be more careful. She left all my initial clippings on the towel while she proceeded. I removed them with my foot they were uncomfortable. Never experienced this sort of laziness. Was the emery board brand new for me? The nail clippers sanitised? They certainly weren't unwrapped for me. Just removed from the rolling trolley. She spent quite some time in conversation, listening to another worker talking or reading what she was being shown on that person's smart phone! Not even looking at what she was filing at times. She just got up and left when she realised I was only having the basic pedi without nail paint - I was experimenting with the salon before making that decision. Glad of that. I don't think she deserved a tip at all. But I've never not tipped in my life, and usually generously. I felt she deserved nothing so it was minimal. The pricing was good, that's my one positive. I'd rather have paid twice as much for comfort, respect, politeness and communication. On my return home I realised that half my toe nails had ragged ends so actually found myself smoothing them out with my own board as they were catching on my socks in places. I've never had such an experience. Nor have I EVER written a bad review. There are other nail parlours around the neighbourhood. I've been to friendlier, cleaner and far more experienced. It was an impulsive (bad) decision to try this place at all. Nb. The floor could also do with a GOOD CLEAN in places. I'd hesitate to put a bare foot down in the corner where I was sitting for fear of catching who knows what? Some of their moveable chairs are old, worn with plastic peeling. I've tried this place a few times now. I originally liked it because it's appointment only but they call to change it all the time. Come early or can you come at a different time? Every single time. I hear them on the phone when I'm there, calling others to do the same. Someone is scheduling incorrectly and if they have down time, their shop could use a clean up. It's not as tidy as it was during the pandemic and last I checked we're still in it. Their pedis are average at best. No real massage and a pretend scrub. Do not get gel x here! It was applied with the nails going in a different direction than my actual nail which looked ridiculous and when removed I was left with bumpy nails since I still had product on my nails. I've had it scrapped off before but here they used an acrylic nail file (machine) I had to come home and buff them to get a smoother surface. Wasn't able to as product (glue) was still there. She rushed the soak so I'm not surprised. So not worth what I paid. My nails are also weak and fragile from whatever their idea of removal is. Their technic is different and left my nails in rough shape. There's too many places to go for a good manicure and pedi to waste money here. Their prices are high too. Altadena nails is such a great addition to my little town. I recently heard about Gel X & could not find them in my usual nail salon, I finally searched and found they had them. I called and booked an appointment with Jesse for 12:30 on a Sunday. When I walked in it was very quiet, I found this to be so relaxing. While people walk in and ask if they have time to do a pedicure, a wax, or a full set, Jesse and one other employee both had appointments they were tending to and turned them away. (Kindly, not mean in any way!) I have to say that for a nail salon to not overbook, is a miracle! Far too many places over book or just have a massive amount of walk-ins making the place noisy and not so relaxing as you'd wish it to be. My quiet relaxation time did come to an end when a little girl walked in lol her mom kept trying to quiet her down, which I can totally appreciate. I think she was just excIted to have paint on her toes lol I have to point out to you all that because I did have an appointment, I felt this allowed Jesse to take her time on my nails. She was so precise in all her filing and buffing that I can 100% say I have never had a better set of nails! The color, the shape, the thickness vs acrylic (or lack there of) is totally amazing! She keeps an impeccably clean salon too! $50 later and I'm happy as can be haha I it's now been a bit over a week and I am still getting compliments on them and even catch myself staring at them sometimes lol I know $50 is a bit much for a set, but for gel x and amazing work from Jesse! Originally went in for gel mani and regular pedi. She cut my nails too short and filed them into the wrong shape, so at that point I decided just to get regular polish since I knew it wasn't a manicure I'd want to keep for 2 1/2 weeks with gels. At that point she kept pressuring me to get gels, despite my insistence I now wanted regular polish. She barely trimmed my cuticles and I got no massage with my manicure, polish was rushed and doesn't look great. Water for my pedicure was lukewarm at best. I paid extra for callous removal which felt way overpriced for what I got . The whole thing felt rushed and left me really disappointed seeing as it was my one moment away from my toddler while on vacation. I think as soon as they found out I was from out of town they just stopped caring.
