I came here to remove my Gel X nails and get a basic manicure with no polish, but the experience was extremely disappointing from start to finish. First, instead of properly wrapping my nails in foil with acetone (the standard and safe method), the technician placed my hands into bowls lined with produce bags filled with pure acetone -- without even telling me. I thought it was water until my skin started reacting and feeling painfully dry. The smell was so strong it gave me a headache, and at one point she had to cover my hands with a towel because of how overwhelming it was. Next, she used the wrong tool to remove my Gel X nails, which damaged my cuticles. On top of that, she skipped basic cuticle care altogether -- something you expect as part of any manicure service. My nails looked worse leaving than when I walked in. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called afterward to express how unsatisfied I was, and when I returned with my boyfriend, he had to point out how unacceptable the results were. Only then did they fix the damage, and they persuaded me to remove my initial Yelp review.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Out of fairness, I did. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However, when I came back later for an eyebrow service, the same technician openly gave me attitude -- even sucking her teeth at me -- clearly because I had complained before.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That level of unprofessionalism is not okay. First of all, I didn't get anything that I asked for, even if I tried correcting the woman that was doing my nails, she had such a shitty attitude. Some way to treat a client. She made the experience even worse. Came here on Memorial Day because I was in a pinch. I needed my nails done for an important event the following morning. They were able to squeeze me in, no problem. I was so thankful. I was open to just about anyone who would do them because no one else was open, but I ended up loving them so much that I am now a loyal customer. I trust them to do my nails every month. I can't speak to all of their services, but I get extend gel and it always looks great. It lasts about 4 weeks and, shockingly, my nails aren't damaged in the end. So many manicurists leave your nails damaged after gel manis, but my nails are super healthy even after the gel comes off. And to top it off, they have great customer service and unbeatable prices for the area. read more

I have been coming to Ana here at Tan J Nails before it was even called that name. I have been following Ana from location to location getting my nails and eyebrows done since i was 15 years old. I have never been to another nail shop in my life nor have i ever trusted another nail shop to do a great job like i trust Tan J Nails. Everyone there is great! I always have Ana do my manicure and Kathy do my pedicure! I also love my guy Tony! They are all so nice. They are literally my second family! I tell Ana my whole life story when I'm getting my nails done and she listens all the time. I consider her like a auntie to me! The love she gives to all of her customers is unmatched! Their regular polish is DRY and they have a very poor selection. The pedicure chairs are hit or miss as far as the massager is concerned. I've been here twice. The most recent time I got a French pedicure with rhinestones. The rhinestones fell off within 24 hours so that was $6 wasted. The polish chipped on my big toe two days later. Maybe I will try gel next time but regular polish on my toes usually lasts at least three weeks. You can park in the lot just north of the salon. This place is listed on Yelp as Black owned but I see NO evidence of that. All Asian employees and a Buddha shrine right when you walk in. Not to say there aren't Black Buddhists or that a Black person wouldn't have an all Asian staff and employees that don't fully speak English... it just doesn't seem likely. Nails (acrylic fill, change shape/gel/design) by John. I didn't get the name of the person that did my pedicure and callus remover. He was bad. He was friendly and smiled all the time which was great but he was very distracted with the news that he was not paying attention while scrubbing my feet. Despite the fact that I got callus remover my feet didn't end up in great shape. And he left newspaper stain on my foot. John was good at his work but it took forever! I was with him for about 3 hours. He was not detailed so I had to be on him to get the shape right and to get left over paint from my fingers. He was very chatty with others and I wasn't sure if he was making fun. I felt like he just wanted to be done but he kept making small mistakes and having to clean them up. I showed him a Pinterest picture with a design and he forgot the design. Usually people up sell you but I kept having to up sell myself asking for gel and reminding him of the design he forgot. He had to go back and redo the gems. At the end he did a great job so I guess it was worth it! read more

I love this place because in my opinion I think that the prices are good. I was disappointed the last time i went because Tony did my acrylics for the first time & he was so messy w/ his work. My coffin nails were all uneven, one of the pinky nails was skinnier than the other one. It was terrible, my nails had lumps in them too! I'd go back, I just wouldn't want Tony to do my nails again. Tony is amazing at doing nails and is one of the main reasons I kept coming back! I don't get acrylic I only get Gel manicure and regular pedicure which is always simply a basic color I am not extravagant when it comes to my nails I like them plain and simple! Lol the reason I am giving them 3 stars is because: 1. The place is nice and clean 2. BUT the technicians I have gotten the past few times have been very rough, I even bleed this last time because the technician pulled off way to much of my cuticle. Update: I found Tina, she's awesome, she isn't rough, and takes her time to ensure quality work. Overall: definitely not the worst! It does get busy here so plan accordingly. I had to fix then when I got home because it was absolutely embarrassing I had such high hopes because I was told they would be able to do the nails in the photo. I went for a fill an color change, I requested a chocolate color; the girl who did them said to thrust her that the color was going to look like what I wanted. Stopped in on Monday, January 30th at about 6:30 pm I waited about 10 mins before I was serviced, they were pretty busy and I heard they are even worse on the weekends! But due to my go-to nail place being closed and desperately needing a mani/pedi their yelp reviews dragged me in. Pasadena is very competitive within every mile there is a nail shop. I got a gel manicure and regular pedicure and my sister got a pedicure which came out to be about $52 (cant remember the exact amount) not including tip. Gel manicure - 4/5 the man took his time and actually painted my whole nail. I dislike when they leave a space in-between the nail and cuticle. He did not make my fingers bleed or cause any pain. I will definitely go back to get gel with him. (IDK his name, but I will find out) BUT their brand of gel sucks it chipped 2 days after!! This has never happened to me. Pedicure 2/5 - I wouldn't go back for a pedicure with the same person, I feel like she could have done a better job cleaning the dead skin/cuticles and cleaning the excess nail polish. If I do go back for a pedicure ill definitely keep a closer eye. Sisters pedicure 0/5 - the man painting my sisters nails kept messing up and taking the polish off, but I appreciated him redoing it without being told. The next day she was having pain on her toe due to them digging too deep. Her toe got infected as well. Cleanliness - I'm not sure if every person gets a set of clean tools, but I did see the bags. I wish they would do this in front of the customer to be reassured. After pedicures they scrub the tubs (THANK YOU!!!) proper sanitation is a must! read more

I was looking for a nail salon open past 7 in the Pasadena area (because I was working late and had an important meeting the next day). I found this place and gave them a call because they were open until 8pm. They were very nice over the phone and told me to come on in. When I arrived there was a bit of a wait and all techs were busy with customers. They asked me to wait in one of the free chairs which was no problem because it gave me an opportunity to watch how the techs interacted with the customers. What I saw was nothing but great things. Techs were friendly and helpful. One person who appeared to be a manager was walking around handing out candy. It was a very relaxed and friendly environment. On to the service: I asked for a mani-pedi to get me meeting ready. The lady that worked on me was very attentive and efficient in the manner in which she operated. I didn't feel like the process took forever as is the case at other places I have visited in the past nor did I feel like it was to short. Another thing that I really liked was the fact that there was no high pressure up selling of services. Overall the prices were exceptionally reasonable, the service was great, the staff was friendly, and the place is open until 8pm. No complaints! read more
