Topnotch Gyros and terrific service! I was craving gyros. I spied Al's on my way home. I turned into the strip mall and was perturbed because the parking was one-way. I drove all around the backside of the mall and contemplated just going home, but boy, I was glad that I made the trip. Al offers a variety of food. You can choose Mediterranean, Pizza or Chicago style hot dogs. This is a Chicago Street Food kind of place. Their gyros is touted as a Chicago Gyros. Because of my strong craving for gyros, I put on my snail lens and stuck with it. A gyros sandwich by itself was $5.95, but I was enticed by the $7.99 combo: a gyros sandwich and a side of either fries or a choice of hummus, cilantro hummus or baba ghanouj plus a drink. I asked my super friendly server for a recommendation. She said she loved the cilantro hummus. I made myself comfortable in one of their booths after I filled my cup with a combination of lightly sweetened Peak green tea and Minute Maid Lemonade. My food arrived, ushered by mouthwatering aromas. I never took pictures faster in my life. I touched the pita bread that accompanied my cilantro hummus. It was warmed, lightly toasted. I tore into it and the hummus melted in my mouth, full herb and garlic flavors melded together. My mouth was in Cloud Nine. Then, I bit into the gyros. A symphony of thinly shaved lamb and beef cut from the spit, luscious tzatziki sauce, cool and infused with those magical herbs, slivers of onion and slices of tomato wrapped in a toasted pita quilt! Need I say anything more. Next time, I will try the falafel and baba ghanouj. After I eat through the Mediterranean menu, I might try some of the other Chicago offerings. read more

Went one step beyond EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS and took me to a place I didn't realize I was missing......NOSTALGIA! Catapulted me back to childhood, North side of Chicago with my brother and friends. I can hear the jokes and laughter and the TASTE OF CHICAGO!!!!!! AL.....THANK YOU!!!! We've been back and forth to Arizona many times since my previous review, and we still grab lunch at Al's when we are in the Bell Road area. We were there last week, so I thought I'd update my review. (Since the previous review, I am no longer a vegetarian, BTW.) I had a gyros sandwich and my wife had the chicken shawarma, with pink garlic sauce on the side (yum!). I love gyros, and Al's makes the best that I have ever had! I got just the sandwich, and I could barely finish it. The chicken shawarma was delicious as well, and we took the leftovers home. I'm pretty sure that everything there is delicious, and I should try some other menu items, but the gyros are so good that I may never get around to that! As always, the people are very nice, the restaurant is nice and clean. If you like Mediterranean food at all, you must try Al's. read more

This was my second visit. Guy running the register was friendly. Pretty good bang for my buck-$10 for a drink, gyro, fries with feta and a little side of lentil soup (was too full to try it this time.) Sauce and vegetables were under the meat on the sandwich, which is kinda odd in my book but worked. Generous amount of meat, sauce was nice and not in your face. Al's Gyro such a hidden gem, thanks to yelper review we choose to eat here. They are a shop small, local business. We order chicken/potatoes curry soup, and the three meat dish with rice, shawarma, steak and chicken. You can taste the family pride in their food. Everything was really good. This was a random find after every freaking drive thru in the area had at least 8 cars. So, I went inside and ordered a chicken gyro combo. The yellow rice was plentiful and very good. The other good item was the white meat chicken pieces which had a crazy good marinade slathered and sticking to the meat. The problem was the pita was not good and it would have been tough to eat this in my car which I was forced too. This is definitely my go to place when I'm craving satisfying delicious Mediterranean or Greek food; the wonderfully friendly and helpful staff are a huge reason I go here as well! Their hummus is soooo creamy and perfectly flavored I could eat it with just a spoon and be happy, although my usual move is to get extra pitas I love the Chicago style gyro as well, it's always bursting with tender herby flavorful meat and just the right amount of sauce and veggies! The most delicious food properly prepared for a great price. After driving for YEARS to 19TH AVE and Greenway, we finally found Al's Gyros and are we ever glad! The spanakopita is big and tasty. Al's has the best Gyro meat in the area. We're always met with a cheerful smile and warm greeting and farewell. Everything about this place is cool, especially all the Chicago pics and posters everywhere. Makes us miss our time in the Windy City during graduate school. Stopped in for a bite for lunch and was looking for a good Mediterranean place. Ambiance: Strip mall joints don't impress from the outside but this place once through the door was super clean and had a very clear and easy to read menu up above that anyone could read - very understandable with pictures of the entree to boot. Food: decided to go with a chicken gyro sandwich which was tender, seasoned well, and tasty. Pita bread was soft and the vegetables were fresh. The one strange thing about it was a pink Tzaiki sauce that was a combo sauce if some kind. It was ok but I'd just prefer regular honestly. The fries were tasty as well and for the price with a drink of about $10 was average. Service: Friendly counter service and quick turn around on the food despite it being fairly busy just before the noon hour. Lots of schwarma and gyro shops on the valley but this was a good experience so if your looking for a go to place with good food you can find it here. read more

Al's gives you a Bell Rd. address. If you face the shopping center, it is around the corner on your right; near 59th St., The interior is very clean. The signs both inside and out are well lit and easy to read. The service is lovely. Any complaints you read about the parking lot are not true. The Gyros have a generous amount of thinly sliced garlicy meat the tzatziki sauce and vegetable amounts were Spartan. The French fries were coated and not greasy at all. Rating them, a three seems unfair. So much of Al's Gyros is good, but their stinginess with the veggies and sauce is a downer. Everyone else in the world wants meat, meat and more meat, but I like a balance, and this just did not have it. Yeah it gets a three, but do not let that stop you. It was more than enough for lunch - The service was quick - and served with a smile . The food is ok but overpriced. Place seems dirty and unorganized. They need more help during busy times. Over the years the owner Al seems to have gotten very irritable and there is an underlying anger even though he calls everyone "my friend". I stopped going for a while because this aggressiveness started to be exhibited more and more. We stopped in again recently and the owner Al got very angry and insulting when I politely asked about our order. It had been over 35 minutes and 4 other tables that came after us already got served. All I did was ask. He yelled at me and later at my wife and wanted to pursue an argument that it was only 10 minutes. Not so. There was a time stamp on the receipt, and it was almost 40 minutes to get our food. Regardless there was no need to snap at me and yell at my wife as he finally brought the food. I asked him several times to please stop arguing. Needless to say we were too upset to enjoy our food. There were also 4 mistakes in our order when it finally did come. I let it go for fear of more of Al's ranting. Nearly $40.00 for chicken and rice and a hot dog. I've been a long-time customer for many years. I never leave negative reviews for any business. But in this case it is called for. I would not recommend Al's Gyros, there are other like restaurants in the area. If you do go hope you catch him on a good day. read more

It was good but not the best we've had in the area, finding it a little dry, definitely all meat & not enough onion, lettuce or tomato. The little bit of taziki sauce we got was good. The wife picks up from here all the time, excellent Gyro's and Gyro plates though they could be a bit less rice and more meat on the plates. There is enough rice for 2 or 3 meals. Tzatziki sauce is very good, onions are not too strong. Very Good. read more

This Greek, Chicago, & Mediterranean is as good as it gets. My wife had the Chicago gyros with salad. I had the Steak Shawarma Plate, including rice , pita bread, and tzatziki sauce. Both were outstanding and fairly priced. $7.99 for the gyro and $13.99 for the shawarma plate. Both were more food than we could eat at one sitting. Salads were very fresh. The meat was done just like in Greece ! I also had the garlic sauce with mine. All the sauces are freshly made. While I ended up taking much of mine home, I also ordered the cilantro jalapeno hummus with pitas and baklava to take home. Everything is very flavorful, fresh, and delicious. I will definitely be returning. Some of the Chicago favorites include Chicago hot dogs, patty melts, Italian sausage on gonella roll, and pizza puffs. The best place for gyros around! Love all the meat they give you, and their bread is soft and so darn good. Just love the taste of their product totally, so this is our new go-to for Greek food for sure. And we found it just by accident. We were headed to King Gyros, which is also very good, but they are closed on Sunday. The reviews on Yelp suggested Al's, so thanks Yelpers for the great suggestion. We'ree Greek ourselves, and have tried so many around where we live, and Al's is our new #1 now. Next visit we try the baklava and some other goodies. Stay tuned. read more
