I read the great reviews and decided to come early on Friday night, around 6 p.m. Why on earth would a restaurant open to the public have a wedding reception during dinner hours???? This was a full-blown reception with table decor, two photographers, and 40 guests. Looking around, you could see other non-wedding party customers looking astonished and laughing as the MC started talking on a microphone. The MC welcomed the bride and groom with a flower girl who threw rose petals in the middle of the restaurant for the bride and groom's grand entrance. Shame on the owners for doing something like this. People were hovering over our table, greeting one another. Our server was taking care of the wedding party and even apologized to us as we were leaving, since my husband had to get up and ask for boxes and a check. It was so odd and uncomfortable and ruined our experience. I will say we were checked on by other staff, but that didn't help the most awkward and surprising situation that was going on around us. I would have given this place two stars based on everything else, but the food was excellent. Also, my food was wrong, and a robot brought it over, so we had to take it off the tray. I had to ask another server about my meal, and she said she told my server, but couldn't promise that she would be over anytime soon because she was also serving the wedding party. Super professional-those were her exact words. Everyone was tending to the wedding party, and we did not get good service, which is understandable considering there was a wedding reception going on. I can only imagine how the rest of the night went, considering the DJ was also setting up to play music. I hope the owners will close for a private event and consider the rest of their paying guests who also matter and have many choices when it comes to where they can dine on a Friday night. My husband was hospitalized when we first flew in this week, and this is our one night for our first time in Arizona to have a nice dinner before flying home tomorrow. When I visit family in Phoenix area, this is a favorite dinner destination. Caroun offers delicious food and an upbeat atmosphere. I highly recommend the family platters for feeding larger groups. Nice menu at this restaurant, the food is good for the quality here in Arizona. The entire business is clean but it's like all over the place, trying to do everything at once. Random stage with club lights and throne chairs and dim lights, a bar in the middle, a lounge on one side, machine food delivery...I personally recommend having some kind of divider..and maybe moving the stage to storage? it makes the aesthetic look tacky--but overall the decor inside is beautiful but the dimmed lights do it no justice. When I walked in I noticed that they had the hookah section on the left side and then just regular dining on the right which is pretty cool. The server was friendly when greeting us but then didn't really talk much to her after the initial order. Seemed like they had a good amount of people but not too crowded. The atmosphere has fmailies and some couples. Reminded me of a banquet hall. The food took actually way longer then expected and I think they may have forgot to bring it out or something because after a while of waiting they gave us that look like "oh snap we def forgot" I don't usually like to say negative but the following could be good area of improvement: I wish the pita came a little warm but it was chilled. The beef kabobs was pretty good, half of one of them was burnt on one side. Chicken was pretty good and juicy! The rice was bland and kind of reminded me of frozen rice that was reheated. I did get the baklava which was really good!!! The veggie plate was also good. I think the falafel was delicious and fresh! After we finished it was hard to find our server and had to ask someone else to grab the check. They finally brought it over and then I paid and they said they were going to bring a bag to take some items to go since we had boxes. Well I went to the bathroom and came back to my partner still waiting on the bag, so figured they forgot so we just walked out. Not a big deal but also could have been an easy ask but the funny part is they offered lol I was going back and forth between a 3 or a 4 because they do a really good job with presentation of the food. Comes with a lot of yellow rice, onion, peppers and pickle. A dry dish, could use a sauce or dipped in hummus. The beef shawarma saj was cooked perfectly, the pita was grilled perfectly, and its sauce made the dish a standout. Came with red cabbage which was perfectly al dente, and fries. Wish this was what I got. Super friendly service. Our mains came out with robot delivery, which is cute but also strange - as from the kitchen to our table is about 10 feet. The interior is very clean and a bit upscale. The water pressure in the men's room sink, however, was very lacking. Smoking right outside the main entry so our very first and very last impression of the place is that it stinks. Baklava is their only dessert option but it's pistachio-based, so it's already the best option. Lunch with 1 appetizers, 2 mains, 1 soda, and 1 dessert came to $66 without a tip. read more

Very disappointed with my experience at Caroun Restaurant today. We ordered food to-go and, before sitting down, politely asked a staff member if we could eat inside since the restaurant was nearly empty. Nobody said it was a problem. A few minutes later, another employee came over and rudely told us to leave because it was a to-go order. We even offered to pay any dine-in fee if needed, but were still asked to get out and were watched until we left. It's not about the policy. It's about how customers are treated. Caroun was one of the highlights of my trip to Phoenix. I'm Chaldean from Michigan but live in San Francisco now, and the food honestly reminded me of home in the best way possible. I ordered the beef shawarma and the chicken cream chop, and both were excellent. The portions were huge, everything was packed with flavor, and you could tell the food was made with care. The chicken cream chop especially brought back so much nostalgia since it's such a hard dish to find outside of Middle Eastern communities. I ended up ordering takeout, but I honestly wish I had eaten there in person because the restaurant had such a lively, welcoming energy. Everyone there was incredibly kind and the whole place just felt warm and inviting. If I'm back in Phoenix again, I'll definitely be coming back to eat there and have hookah too. read more

The lamb I had was excellent, slow roasted with long grain jasmine rice and thin, soft pita bread, which was also excellent. The beef tikka I also had was excellent cooked, medium, rare, savory fatty and delicious. The aromatic flavors were excellent and well balanced. The food came quickly, and the service was excellent as far as delivery goes. I don't know anything about the ambience from within inside the restaurant, I haven't been there yet, but I can tell you that they do stay open till midnight, which is awesome. There's nothing better than having some late night roasted lamb with excellent rice. The hummus I ordered was excellent well balanced with some really great olive oil drizzled on it. As well as the Iraqi coffee with baklava. We also got the orange juice. For the appetizers, we got the cucumber pickles as well as the Iraqi salad. He said the Iraqi coffee tasted just like he remembered it when he was stationed in Iraq. The orange juice was the best I've ever had. It tasted almost like they put a frozen orange and a blender it was that fresh and crisp. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and tender, and the portions were perfect. The pickles were so delicious. We ate almost the entire portion. Which was massive by the way. The Iraqi salad was so fresh and flavorful. The server asked us for our order, I asked if I can place the entire order together but get the appetizers first. Then they can get us the meals. She said us but the robot server brought everything together. It was disappointing to say the least as we wanted to enjoy our beer with the appetizers, but instead we got everything. So we opted to eat our meal first so it doesn't get cold, and snack on the appetizers later. The taste was great. The chicken fried steak was somewhat cold and not hot enough. They have these funny little robots that deliver the food to your table from the kitchen. The food is seriously good. We especially loved the chicken kabobs. The food at Carouns is amazing. My family and I love the veggie platter and the meat platter too. We tend to order to share and these options give a bit of everything - baba ganoush, hummus, falafel, tabbouleh, cucumber/tomato salad, beef kafta, chicken, steak, rice. You can size the meat platter from 3+ people. It's a lot of food every time but we are happy to have leftovers! The ambiance is fine for what Carouns offers. We were totally surprised when the speaker started playing loud (way too loud) music and there was a belly dance performance. The presentation of the food was fine but I will say I was a bit disappointed about the quality. The rice and chicken were a bit dry and I was not impressed with the bread. It was extremely flat and chewy instead of fluffy and soft, it felt like prepackaged bread and not fresh made. The stuffed grape leaves were too sour and tasted like pickles.
