Lunch Chicken Tawook with Hummus: chicken was juicy & flavorful. The person in front of us was right, the hummus was delicious & the portions was generous - we needed more pita. Lunch Meat Kafka with Baba ghanoush: meat was flavorful but slightly tough - still enjoyed it though! Baba Ghanoush was deeeelicous - smooth but still had some texture from the grilled eggplant & fresh pomagrantes. The portions were generous, so we asked for a kid for our bowls. Appreciate business is environmentally conscious using recycle paper bowls & single use utensils with cutouts on the handles (less plastic to the environment). When we arrived, my initial sense was below casual... more like cafeteria style... paper cups and plastic utensils!!... really!? We ordered one falafel dinner and one schnitzel dinner, both with two sides and a soda and a water apiece... total bill came to $58.00 - YIKES!!* My partner found it hard to cut her chicken with a plastic knife and for me, with 6 falafel balls, I was given only one (1) piece of pita bread. When I asked for additional Pitas, they gave me only one (1) more. The food was decent, but the presentation and prior reviews didn't match. Overall, a disappointing result altogether. There's a reason De Babel is consistently rated 5 stars - based on my first visit, it is 100% worthy of all the stars! The portions are incredibly generous. The staff is great. The food is amazing. What more could you ask?! I ordered the gyro with roasted vegetables as a combo with fries, and had to take pictures just to capture how much food came out. Everything was delicious! Tzatziki sauce is homemade, which I preferred on the side. What really made the experience stand out was the staff. The wait team was genuinely friendly and welcoming from start to finish, which made the whole meal even better. Bonus points for fountain drinks, too! Wow! So impressed with how fresh and amazing the food was. I ordered the mezze platter which came with hummus, baba ganoush, dolmas, falafel, tabouleh, pickles and pita. The portions were generous (actually masssive) and this is best shared with more than one person. Hummus was smooth and creamy. Baba ganoush was perfection- not overly smoky. Pita bread was warm and fluffy. I also got the lamb tikka plate with a chopped salad. The lamb was tender and juicy and the chopped salad was so refreshing. The service was great and friendly and I truly wish they had this back in California. If I lived in Scottsdale, I would eat here all the time. They were so sweet they gave my friend a birthday cookie and ice cream too. The ambiance is very casual and low key. Good for take out or dine in. Such a clean store, we saw workers walking around fix up the lobby every 5 minutes. Cashiers could tell we were first timers right away and offered to help us with the menu. We ended up getting the chicken shawarma sandwich and the gyro sandwich. We also got a side of fries, WHICH WERE MASSIVE!!! The gyro came with a tzatziki, while the chicken shawarma came with a garlic sauce. The chicken was loadedddd with dark meat, could've used more of the pickled veggies tho. Gyro was perfect, good balance between meat, pita, sauce, and pickled veg. If we came back we would definitely get a combo instead of separate sandwich and fries, you definitely get better value that way. We also had to move because there was an awful trash smell from the neighboring business just lingering while we were eating. The theme of our meal at De Babel was abundance. We ordered two lunch plates; one chicken shawarma and one gyro, each with a side. We were not aware of the large portions, even with the lunch plates here. We ordered a side of hummus with the chicken and the chopped salad with the gyro. My husband commented that the side of hummus was bigger than a tub of hummus you'd buy at the store! I don't know what the green veggie was on top of the hummus, but it was enjoyable. We also ordered a side of French fries that ended up filling the tray our food came on. We both thought the total for the food was a little high after ordering, but that was because we accidentally ordered enough food for 4 people instead of two! This place has been on my eating list for awhile but I don't get up this way too often but today when I was close by at Gateway Trailhead, we checked around the area and found De Babel was close by and came in for lunch. This place is about as busy as it gets and hard to find a table to sit down at, this is a fast casual place, so you order your food at the counter, take a number and the food is delivered to you. We ordered the falafel lunch plate with Caesar salad, a side of fries and okra. We waited about 15 min and then the food came out. The food here is excellent, everything we tried was good. The prices definitely have been affected by inflation and hard to justify $7.50 for fries but they were good! Falafel very well made and the okra was really good (but also bit more oily than I like). Pita bread was the fluffy poofy ones, my favorite! Overall, a really well executed restaurant and very good Middle Eastern food. I would return when in the area and maybe as a lunchtime splurge as I can't seem to justify $35 for lunch really. Call me a cheapskate but to get all these items at Baiz, it would probably cost less and I would have a few meals for a few days, but hey people got to pay the rent and their employees. Was recommended this by a friend! The shop was bustling when I entered and everyone was going up to say the food was good to the owner while I was waiting! :) The smell was nice and I appreciated the cashier talking through some of the options. I enjoyed their chicken tawook lunch plate which came with a side -- I got hummus as suggested by a friend -- and pita which was warm and kept in foil. It was really hefty in size and able to pack in a lot of the food. It definitely hit the spot though I think next time I would also get a more crunchy / veggie side like their salad or their tabbouleh! The portion size is definitely great especially for the price in this economy (total came out to around $20.50). I was able to save some of the hummus and chicken which was great to have later with some pilaf I made at home! The hummus was really amazing and had this garlic chickpea olive oil topping that gave the pita and chicken tawook a nice zest to complement the creaminess. While waiting the restaurant owner came up to give me a sample of their tahini ice cream to try which was delicious (not too sweet! Def a compliment coming from an Asian American!). Vegan review: I've been curious about this place based on all the glowing reviews I've read. We visited on Black Friday, which can always be a challenge for a business in a strip mall, but they were well staffed, and we had no wait in line. The menu was strait forward, but it would help if they indicated which items were vegan. To get a taste of the place, we ordered a falafel sandwich with tahini and schug on the side, plus a side of hummus and a side of rice. All arrived promptly and accurately. The falafel instantly took me back to one I had in Munich years ago. It was the pickle combo of turnips and cucumbers that sent me there! I loved how crunchy it was, and the pita was soft but supportive. No falling apart! If De Babel were closer to home, I'd come back for the falafel. The schug was also excellent - a nice flavor kick! I didn't enjoy the rice or hummus as much. The hummus had a bit more tahini than I prefer, and the rice was plentiful, but a bit bland. Not offensive, just not as great as I'd hoped. What a fantastic surprise this place turned out to be! We decided to go out on Thanksgiving (I know, I know - shocking!) and when almost everything was shut, D-Babel was open... and naturally packed for lunch. It's a very clean, beautifully set-up spot with quick service and a quick turnaround vibe. We ordered the lentil soup, stuffed grape leaves, one chicken shawarma, and one lamb kofta shawarma and in true hungry-on-Thanksgiving fashion, we definitely overordered and ended up taking some to go. The perfect meal is a precisely grilled skewer of meat, a fresh, crispy flavorful salad , with a dip like hummus or raita and a hot fluffy pita bread. Oh man, their pita. I came here from Georgia while visiting relatives. We were looking for a lunch place after going to Taliesin West. We were greeted by a pleasant young man to take our order at the counter. He kindly explained their ordering process and some of their ingredients. We decided on lamb medallions with fatoush ( a 9 ingredient salad) , and gyro with fatoush and the most amazing hummus and fresh pita either here or in the middle east. The food was fresh and tasted fantastic. The portions were huge and they were very friendly while delivering the food to the table and checking on us mid meal. This review is going to be incredibly short and to the point(well for me bc I like to write). Son highly recommended coming here on our way back from Canyon Lake. Storefront is incredibly clean and tidy. The fella working the counter was very nice and explained the entire menu after mentioning I'd had never been here. Food seems to be cooked on demand so be patient and the fact that your food will be fresh out of the kitchen. The French fries appear to be cut on site, twice fried and they are incredible. The winner of this meal was the Gyro Sandwich, it was by far the best gyro I'd ever had. It's a massive sandwich so show up hungry. Everything(gyro, chicken, salad and hummus) we ordered was yummy. Like half the reviews here, this place has been on my radar since earlier this year when De Babel snagged #3 on Yelp's top-100 restaurants in the COUNTRY. I finally made it, thanks to a quick work jaunt to Phx. I was worried since it was 12:30p - peak lunch rush - but the line was only 4 deep and parking was just 7 spaces from the front door in the large lot that supports all of the shops here. Alas, every table was taken, but folks here are all smitten it seems and sharing the corner of a six-seater with two other folks was spontaneous and easy. I had scoped out the menu the night before and couldn't decide between their falafel sandwich and their lamb tikka sandwich - so I figured out a way to have both! I ordered the lamb sandwich and then the 4-pack of individual falafel off of the sides/extra menu (no sandwich). Bingo! The lamb tikka was Outstanding - great pita, great spices and condiments but, best of all, outstanding lamb. This is where so many drop to 4-stars but, as I learned from the cashier, De Babel takes great pains to have lean, tender lamb without excess fat, gristle, or tendon. Next time I'll have the lunch entree version of the lamb tikka, which for $3.80 more adds a side: such as hummus, lentil soup, fr fries, or tabouli. The 4 falafels are like mini-muffin tops, not round balls but small/shallow cupcakes. That gives them ample crisp edges but I think at the slight cost of super moist insides. The herbal freshness is striking in a good way though. Staff is super friendly and the venue is relatively plain but clean, pleasant. It might be another year before I make it to far N. 3.5 Stars. Not quite a four for me. So, for May 2025, the International Supper Club UYE bravely ventured into the unknown, a.k.a. De Babel. Now, if you're a devotee of Yelp's annual Top 100 Restaurants list, you might know that a trio of Arizona eateries graced this year's ranking, with De Babel holding down the fort for us here in the Valley of the Sun. Usually, your trusty ISCUYE is practically psychic when it comes to these lists - we've often been ahead of the curve, like that time we practically picked 2022' #1 Resto for our UYE well ahead of Yelp! But De Babel? Total blank slate for both yours truly and the fabulous Monica O. Naturally, it shot straight to the top of our 'must-try' list faster than you can say 'world-famous hummus.' Having spent a fair bit of time gallivanting around the Mediterranean, my love for the cuisine is no secret. So, imagine my dismay when, on our designated dining night, they were OUT of chicken shawarma! (Cue dramatic music). My go-to, vanished! Undeterred, I opted for the falafel platter, naturally with their legendary hummus and a side of fattoush. The falafel was... well, falafel. Honestly, my palate seems to have a diplomatic immunity when it comes to discerning major differences in falafel, whether I'm stateside or strolling through Santorini. Now, the hummus. This is where things get a little... spicy (or not, in this case). I'm going to give it a solid 2 out of 5 stars. Well, this place has been on my to-go list for a good time since I saw this restaurant featured in the top 100 list of Yelp's best in the nation. Decided to go today for lunch. First impression was great about this place, nice looking interiors, spacious, and very clean--appealing menu as well, and not being very confusing at all. Overall, I would recommend this place to try; however, it's not the best Greek food that we've ever had. The excitement faded away as we continued eating. Here are my takes: Food/Drinks: Got 2 entrees, 2 desserts, & 1 appetizer. Grapes leaves plate was good looking and fancy. Tasted fine. Chicken shawarma just came as meat with nothing else than fries, since I took fries and also upgraded to truffle fries, and that was a little surprising take on the plating option, especially when this was from a lunch entree. My wife had to go and ask for Pita bread and was asked to pay since it doesn't come with the order. Chicken had some herb flavor and this was one of the first greek food with this taste so can't say it this is authentic. The lamb with rice was flavorful, but my lamb was too dry and not the most juicy. Shawarva was below average, and after a bite, even I double-checked if it was baklava that we got. Not recommended. The tahini ice-cream flavor is something that you need to get used to, and not try for the first time. We ended up trashing that and totally understand it was not for palette, while other people would have liked it. Star of the show was truffle fries, but you won't go to a Greek restaurant for fries. no? Service: You order and they deliver food at your place. They missed our ice cream, and we had to go and ask for it after we were done with our food. No one ever comes to check with you at the table. It's that kind of setup.
