Wow, where to begin?! If you shut your eyes when eating you will think you are fully immersed in a German or Alps ski town, with the great European cuisine, sounds and music, and overall feeling that Alpenrose provides! Very unique menu as it is German inspired, but everything was so fresh and filling. Portions are very large as well. Our group had 5 adults and 3 children and the host and wait staff treated us so well, the table settings were colorful and pretty, and the food was delicious! We had the pretzel appetizer and my SIL, who loves authentic German pretzels, said that they were fantastic. I had the summer (water) melon salad with smoked salmon on the side and it was all so good that I want to try and make it when I get home. I love love German food and I am deeply aware that not everyone shares my love of hot potato salad or spaetzle noodles with nothing more than just... butter... but I don't think I'm biased when I say that this establishment serves truly delightful food. The feuerzagenbowl is the perfect winter drink. A nice hot apple cider esque drink with a freshly caramelized piece of rum soaked bread. It has enough spices to give to the drink personality and keeps it from getting too sweet. The ham hock is delightfully evenly seasoned and it is cooked to perfectly fall off the bone. Super moist and soft all the way through, it shows culinary excellence. If you get the ham hock, don't bother ordering the pretzel... it comes with the pretzel... On second thought... just skip the pretzel... it's fine, but not life altering The weisswurst was cooked perfectly and the sauerkraut was just perfect. The apfelstrudel was delightful with a nice flakey crust, tons of apples, and managed to be wonder satisfying. Dinner was good enough I kind of craved the same meal the next day. A charming German Austrian Swiss restaurant located the town center of Vail. Bring your appetite because serving sizes are not for the faint of heart. The Cesar salad came on in a big scoop on a wooden block. The presentation was original and was a perfect touch. The salad could serve at least 3 people with people being able to have seconds. The cheese soup was delicious. It almost had a hint of potato soup or clam chowder. The pot it came in was yet again another nice touch. The pretzel came out hanging on antlers. 4 of us are the pretzel. It comes with a hot cheese dip and spicy mustard. The pork schnitzel was really good, but slightly greasy. The sausage was in a pot with a broth that added a nice flavor to the sausage. The salmon was cooked perfectly as well as the greens on top of the pasta. The potato pancakes were slightly greasy as well, but still very good. I definitely would recommend this restaurant for sure. If you're coming in the summer and it's warm out I suggest asking to be sat on the back patio or if you're inside next to a table next to a window. The restaurant was uncomfortably hot as the place got more crowded. read more

What a great experience! We were sat outside with our dog and it was a lovely atmosphere. They made sure our son had crayons and a high chair as we sat down. The staff is very friendly. I ordered the German lemonade. It was really refreshing and different. We ordered apps to enjoy. The pretzel was awesome, as well as the fried potato balls (I can't remember the German name). They melted in your mouth and left you wanting more. The sausage was just as dreamy and delicious. My husband loved the blueberry sangria! My wife and I had very authentic Bavarian dishes, the schnitzel with spaetzle, and brats with sauerkraut. We enjoyed both dishes and the portions were generous. For desert we had the tasty dampfnudel which can easily be shared. The bier selection was decent with three Munich biers, and an Austrian bier. Our table was in the upstairs section and we sat in a cute corner table. We ordered the goat cheese appetizer and it was great, especially with the lingonberries. Our entrees included the Wiener schnitzel and grandmas pasta. Both of our meals were very good. The service was spot on and we were well attended. Out of all the places we ate in Vail this was our favorite and we even went back for a second night! The inside is beautifully decorated and well themed to the German influence. The Rosti Ballchen appetizer was absolutely delicious, and we enjoyed the BERGSTEIGERSUPPE soup as well (it tastes very similar to a goulash). For mains we had the schnitzel and the Oktoberfest hax'n, both were great! It is very large servings and we could have easily split one of the dishes. I really enjoyed the pork shank and ended up dipping most of it in the cream sauce that came with the schnitzel- they should definitely consider serving them together! Also, the special obazda cheese that came with pretzel was amazing! This had been a favorite of my husband's years ago, and we parked in town not even knowing if it still existed. Boy am I glad it does! To me, it felt like Instagram exploded all over this restaurant in the very best way. The setup (tablecloths, incredibly cute napkins, furs that drape over the chairs, etc., etc.) was beyond beautiful...just like an amazing European picture-perfect dream. The curry I had was not only delicious, but it was served in such a way that I didn't want to eat it just because I would ruin the presentation. For my one year anniversary my husband booked us a reservation at this restaurant in one of the private gondolas outside. The food was really good we had the price fix, we do not eat pork and Thankfully they were able to accommodate us last minute. We were able to eat chicken beef and shrimp, which was cooked on both the grill as well as in the fondue pot. The cheese is melted to perfection and had a really good flavor and two different varieties for people who like sharp cheese, and not. The ambience was fantastic. The service was just enough to still feel like private while still being helped when needed. We had a hot apple cider which really hit the spot because it's a little bit cold inside the gondola. Smara was our waitress and she really helped make the experience enjoyable. She would tell us what her favorite foods were and how to do different combinations. 10/10 would recommend and really affordable for such a private experience. read more

My friends and I tried to eat at Almresi, only to find out that it was fully booked. However, the host told them they had a sister restaurant, Alpenrose ,with a similar menu. We walked over to make reservations, since the phone was busy. The manager let us know it had opened just recently, and they were able to fit us in that evening. We showed up for our reservation and started off with some drinks. I got an Alpen cafe, which was hot chocolate with amaretto and whipped cream, and started off with the fondue with my companions. Alpen cafe was good, but slightly strong. The fondue was warm and tasty, but it had a strong brandy aftertaste, which made it tough to finish. We all chose the truffel ricotta pasta, which was glorious. It was perfect comfort meal for a chilly day. As for the service - staff was nice, but I suspect that they are understaffed. There were such huge lag times between receiving our food and our bill. Food quality was great and interior design was beautiful, though. read more

Cocktails/wine are $10-15. Apps are $9-14. Desserts are $10-14. Soups $10-11. *Wait staff: They dress the part which really gives you a better experience. Polite & took care of us. *Ambiance: They do a great job with the decor, their outfits & table settings to give you the feel of an authentic German restaurant. More on the quiet side. Great place for a date or even a larger group (we had 8). I did not see many children here. *Parking/Location: It's located inside Vail Village so you have to park at the front of the village & walk, but it's not too far. There's also a bus that pickups most places around town & drops you off right at the top of the main stairs into the village. *Dress: Most places in the village are very casual but here I would dress just a little nicer. I just love this place! It's very nostalgic. It looks warm and inviting from the street with the charming architecture and the beautiful flowers. This is a beautiful alpine home with service of the finest cuisine. It's elegant and refined with lots of attention to detail. We went there in the dead of summer, it was quite warm as the dining room does not have central air. A reservation is recommended as they had a hard time accomplishing a small party without one. Do I like spending thirty dollars on a perfectly serviceable schnitzel after being scolded by the hostess? I am insubordinate!---I do not check in at the hostess station---But I have to say that anything Bavarian takes me to Dresden or Berlin, and thus this review will be swayed by nostalgia. The beer. The hokey dresses on the young girls waitressing. I wonder how they got here. How I come to drink beer from a ceramic mug, it's foam erupting into a half moon crest. I erupt after keeping my thirst for Europe docile beneath my shirt. Today, it's a black Hawaiian. White allamandas. Do I delight in wearing a wonderful outfit in a resort town? The party beside me opining on how dashing I am, me pretending not to hear... I had envisioned this outfit years prior and even painted my self-portrait wearing such a ridiculous vacation shirt, thinking that if I ever find one, I'd wear it in Los Angeles or Europe. Yet, I am at Alpenrose, in the tail end of summer, pulling inspirations from my chest, a tug-o-war champ of folklore, after just one beer. Black with white allamandas. Black lenses, gold frames. The redheaded waitress with an accent is kind and redeeming the dark haired mean one. And like me, that mean one resembled a Disney Villain. I, Jaffar. Her, the evil stepsister obsessed with rules. The kicker though, I did not see the hostess stand! It was an innocent gaffe perhaps the cause of thin mountain air. I simply needed a table. Oxygen. I needed to remember Dresden, the grey skies there so murky compared to here, and whether or not I've made a reservation. "Do you have a reservation?" she added. "No," I said, expecting it. I've moved on from it, dipping my schnitzel into a lingonberry sauce. I know what it is because of Ikea meatballs. The gravy is the color of my skin. The schnitzel, pork. Treif. Haram. Most Disney villains wouldn't dare touch it (Disney villains always look middle eastern). Vail looks like a fairy tale town. A movie studio, and it's lovely from the Alpenrose patio. The schnitzel is serviceable. The beer is the best part. Because I remember Berlin, walking along the river, smoking, meeting that lady from online at the silent movie theater, spending the night with her and waking up by the hotel's fire alarm, standing around in our pajamas in the cold...German esoterism bubbling like yeast to no avail. read more

This is a terrific dog-friendly restaurant, with enclosed front dining room which was very cozy in the middle of a snowstorm. The restaurant interiors and food presentation was cuteness overload. Food and drinks were really good, except for the pretzel which was a tad stale. Servers were very friendly and attentive to K9 and human alike. Having traveled all through Germany and Austria I can say that Alpenrose is a very traditional German spot from the atmosphere to the food, you truly feel transported. The drinks are wonderful and beautifully presented with flowers and cute toothpicks. The schnitzel is by far my favorite thing on the menu and the lingonberry sauce is essential to try with it.
