I have a lot of faith in this vet office and staff. See my other review. I wanted to add a little tip to always ask what is in your dog's file following procedures. My dog's teeth cleaning at this office under anesthesia in October was not noted in his file there at all. So when I went in to see Dr. Lei for a post teeth cleaning follow up to check his heart, etc. which is typical, thorough followup care, Dr. Lei could not find notes on his procedure in his file (maybe because it was straight forward without any teeth removals). Right there Dr. Lei said that her staff should have written something in his file and she would follow up with them. There should be a notation in the file, especially when I called the day after the procedure because my dog was still gagging, which they said on the phone was typical for the day following anesthesia. I have trusted this vet office and continue to trust them, just some feedback about the issue with his file. UPDATE 3/17/22: apparently ALL of the doctors quit Aloha Vet in the same week signaling to me that something is seriously wrong with management. So sad about the passing of Dr. R and he would be distraught at this site of hundreds and hundreds of his patients without a vet or meds. No prescriptions can be filled either leaving the whole community in a overbooking fiasco at other vets or in a lurch without a vet. I have invested thousands of dollars in my dogs' health at Aloha Vet and then without warning, this happens. And to put a chain across the front door sends quite a message as people try to pick up their pets' records. I feel for all your wonderful vet techs possibly on the verge of job loss, they don't deserve this. When you do get vets back at this office, I hope you will get at the root of your problems and address them. I do like the high tech clinic, Dr. R's legacy, and your hours and the history of good prior care. Please, for the sake of the community, address the problems that led to this. read more

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! I am so thankful and amazed by the staff and vets here! And honestly they are beyond reasonable with their prices. I took my kitten in for their first exam and vaccines I even had asked the vet about adding on a couple other things and my total was still less than 200 ( I had gone to Makai Veterinary before with another animal and I was charged a lot more for them doing a lot less) Later on that night and into the next morning I noticed my kitten was suffering from the side effects of the vaccine so I called the vet the next day and they took me in right away! They made sure that everything was OK and prescribed some medication to help make my kitten feel more comfortable as he recovers from the vaccine shots. I was not charged an appointment or an exam fee I only had to pay for the meds and was given enough medication to have some on the side if something like this were to happen again. I am exceptionally happy with the care myself and my kitten got and this will definitely be the only vet I will ever go to in the future! read more

I was on HOLD on the phone for almost 1 hr before I was helped! This is so unacceptable. I actually was put on hold on two phones- Cell and landline. Luckily, I am retired, and can multitask. I was able to wash my dishes, fold laundry, brush teeth, put on make up, etc, By the time I was helped, I was in my car ready to drive to the store. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! If you are a working person, I don't know how you would get through without getting fired. I like a particular vet there; if it wasn't for that vet, I would not be wasting my time . Lost my doggy yesterday. Took her into ALOHA VET and they elected to do surgery. She was very sick and I only wish I had taken her in earlier. Of course they wouldn't do anything until I paid over $700 dollars. They just left her laying in the exam room until I got that squared away. Got a call at 2pm from doctor as saying surgery went well but they were going to keep her overnight to monitor. However, I believe there was no monitoring. Not sure when they left the facility but got a call the next morning saying she didn't make it through the night and not by the doctor. Thanks! No explanation whatsoever. So my choices are to spend another $400 for cremation to get ashes back, $2.50 a pound to get her cremated with other animals and no ashes back, pay $25 for them to dispose or pick up. And......they're charging extra on top of what I paid for a dead dog. I'm just sick with this vet. I'll never ever go there again. The doctor spent less than 5 minutes with my kids and I and I paid an extra $40 on top of the $35 visit fee just to walk in there. Yes I feel like they nickel and dimed me and left me with nothing. Very bad experience with Dr. Rodrigues. We have been going there over year, they charged you $37.50 for physical exam but he vary did exam unless we asked but has bad attitude. Kīlauea Vet check everything without asking. He seems like having a bad day and seems do not care much. Whatever we asked for, he wasn't checking well. When he took my dog stool sample, he must push it in very hard, my dog cried and scream which never happened with other vets. And middle the conversation he just left. This vet and doctor was recommended from many people because it's not much choice in this area. Kīlauea vet, she is very kind and take her time to exam your pet. This vet is over booked and sell you many different kind medication for pets. Your bill would be over $100 per visits I highly recommends to go other vet who cares about your pet sincerely, not money. read more

BEWARE! If you love your pet, do not use this clinic. They cannot be trusted. Where do I start... First off, I've brought both my dogs here for years and have spent thousands of dollars on their care. On multiple occasions, they were eager to conduct unnecessary surgery on them. SO GLAD I got a second opinion before putting them under the knife. Secondly, one of my dogs suffered from epilepsy and needed emergency attention on 3 separate occasions for grandmal seizures over the course of 5 years. All 3 times I called their hotline, paid the emergency fee & NEVER got a call back... Not even an apology. Just excuses that the doctor on-call lives in an area with terrible cell phone reception. If that's the case, why is that Doctor even the on-call emergency doctor!!!!!!???? Hello people. Breaks my heart that I called them for emergency help the 3rd time with no avail, and my dog passed away in my arms while I waited for their call that I NEVER got. I hate this place. My family and I are grateful for Aloha Veterinarian Center! Our dog was suffering from an injury and we COULDN'T find a vet to assist us. We left a message with our (former) veterinarian's emergency answering service, but didn't receive a call back. Desperate, we drove there to find out they were closed on the holiday. My friend suggested that we go to Aloha Veterinarian Center. At this point, we were losing hope. I walked in to a welcoming atmosphere! Maile patiently took the time to hear my concerns. I was afraid that we would be turned away since our fur family are not patients of theirs. She told me to wait a moment, so that she could consult with the Dr. As I waited and observed the very busy waiting room, it was obvious that other families were confident and relaxed with the care that their fur family were receiving. My anticipation turned to relief when Maile returned and informed me that they would be able to see our baby! We were ecstatic! Dr. Lyons was our veterinarian. She is great! She kept us informed throughout and provided amazing care. Needless to say, we have found another vet to care for our fur family! read more

Waited 30 mins my appointment... went to have first appointment for my kitten... they said she MiGHT be pregnant so they didn't do any vaccines which was the whole reason I went there... nor did they do an ultrasound to confirm... waited 30 mins to pay my bill asked two different women for my bill and they both walked passed me to check in other patients... so I left after waiting thirty mins to try and give them money... and they called within five mins "oh we saw you just left..." but they "didn't see me standing there for 30 mins with my poor kitten in a hot car" totally rude I do not recommend! read more

I've been very satisfied with care here although they are getting busy and harder to get an appt. my original likes: 1) they have a bench outside where I can wait with my dog, so she doesn't fantasize about making love with (or eating, I'm not sure which) every cat, chihuaha, and rabbit waiting inside. It's a "win-win" because their floor doesn't get covered with her drool while she's imagining getting her mouth on all the other patients, and I can relax and enjoy the fresh air without worrying about my dog choking herself trying to "meet" all the other clients. 2) they're the only vet center I could find on the east side of the island that offers 24 hour emergency care including holidays (back on the mainland, I had a dog die on Thanksgiving once, and had to drive her several hours to find treatment on a holiday, so that taught me a lesson... be prepared... chances are about one in a hundred that it will be Thankgiving, Christmas, or New Years Day when your pet has an emergency!) 3) Dr Rodrigues has actually taken my dog off medication that her mainland vet said she would need for the rest of her life. I guess Hawaii agrees with her... time will tell if he is correct. Still, I admire a vet who will take your dog off medication instead of just trying to sell you more. 4) The staff is always pleasant and helpful 5) They are always busy when I go, so I guess other people like them too. 6) Their prices have been very reasonable. read more

Really disappointed after having gone to these guys for years - poor customer service and dishonest with me on the phone. My dog was given a Rx for an itching problem - very expensive, and also only 21 pills at a time, so calling to get refills was turning out to be a challenge - they are so busy you're often on hold with them for quite awhile. We have pretty crazy schedules ourselves, so I found Walmart Pet Rx (and it was 40% cheaper!) The first time they contacted the vet 3 times to no response, and I had to call Aloha and ask them to please sign off and send it back. Mildly irritating, but no biggie. This month, I get a notice from Walmart that they've sent the request to the vet for signature 3 times and no response. By the time I saw it, I knew we were already gonna run out of pills, which sucked for poor dog. Friday morning: called vet and left a voicemail, asked them to call me back if there was a problem. No call so I assumed it was all OK. Monday morning: Walmart notification that the Rx still hasn't been signed. I call again, politely ask if it can get filled as dog has started itching already. Girl knows exactly what Rx I'm talking about, says it is waiting for vet to sign and will be done by end of day. Tuesday morning: another notice from Walmart that Rx still not recd. So I call Aloha Vet AGAIN. I ask if there's a problem, but I'm told no, the vet is just in an appointment and they have to wait for him to come out so he can sign it (since the day before? But OK). She tells me she will call me if there's a problem. I thank her, don't get a call from them, great. Wake up Wednesday: Rx still not receive (9th notice!) This time girl tells me it was definitely signed and faxed out the day before. She says maybe there's a problem with the fax and she will make sure to get it out again right away. I thank her and hang up. Thursday morning: Another Walmart email that there is still NO response from vet! I call AGAIN, leave a voicemail. Thursday afternoon: email from Walmart customer service telling me the vet won't sign off on the Rx because they want the dog to come in for another check-up first. Prescription is cancelled! Keep in mind, it's has been almost 2 weeks Aloha has been getting these refill notifications. Never once did they contact me and tell me that I needed to make an appointment. They lied to me when I called, telling me that it just needed a signature - even told me that it had already been signed and faxed! In those 2 weeks, my dog has gotten to the point of itching so bad she wakes us up in the middle of the night. Now it will be more days for us to get an appointment with a new vet and get her treatment. I'm super pissed at the disregard and lack of care about my dog. I used to love this vet, but I won't go there again. read more

We have always received good treatment for our pets here. Dr Lei is very caring and engaged with her animal patients. I feel they are in very good hands with her at any point. I did feel less confident with an earlier doctor we used to see but now that we've changed to Dr Lei, this is the only place we come to. The waiting time is very long at times and it has felt rushed in the treatment room too. I don't know if this is due to poor organisation or just unpredictable with patients that doesn't precisely have the same calendar management like us. I would like to have time to discuss and learn more about the care and conditions during the visits. As I have a deep interest in learning I want to learn everything about my animals condition. I want to know what causes a condition and what various alternative I have for treatment. I am not a big fan of just medicating and getting rid of the symtom...I need to know the cause. read more

When my aged cat began having complications from his diabetes and kidney disease I tried this clinic first based upon online reviews. On arrival we encountered an extremely chaotic office with one exam room being taken over by a pile of client files on the table. Everything seemed a bit rough around the edges to me. (I used to be a vet tech on the mainland) We saw Dr. Rodrigues and after some blood tests and his exam he wanted to treat the severe anemia using only some foul tasting multi vitamins. I decided to follow his treatment plan for a few days and see how my cat did. It quickly became apparent that Aloha and Dr. Rodrigues were not the vet for us and we found a different vet who took a more aggressive course of treatment with my cat. In the end I had to put my cat to sleep . . . not through any fault of Aloha or Dr. Rodrigues though. My complaint with them is for a cat with such a serious degree of anemia Dr. Rodrigues did not seem overly concerned and merely prescribed vitamins. That would not have been the course taken by any of the vets I had worked for. read more

Don't EVER go to aloha vet & Dr. Kappas; they sent the wrong nasal swab test out two times in a row causing me to have to torture my poor cat multiple times & delay figuring out the cause of his problem for months; they misdiagnosed my cats ear ulcer saying "put neosporin on it & see if it gets better"; meanwhile my cat was losing tons of weight as the cancer spread & eventually closed off his ability to swallow; I spent thousands of dollars and multiple visits, blood draws & they never clearly diagnosed my cat, my cat died this morning & I can't help think if I would've brought my cat to another vet, would they have recognized the cancer sooner & been able to excise it before it spread; they also lost my cats collar & Dr. Kappas came out & was talking to me about another animal on my last visit, seriously go back to vet school; I'm so upset about how my Beloved cat was treated. read more

This rating is for their emergency services. My cat got injured (fell from a counter). I don't know if it's a sprain, broken or just injured foot/leg/hip, etc. It's 11:40pm at night on Sat, I call the emergency number. On hold for over 6 minutes, nobody answers. Call 3 more times, finally getting an answering service. The person was half asleep, made me repeat my info multiple times. 2 hours later, no call from the on call doctor. Call back the number get answering service again. They try to connect me to the doctor with no luck. Sent another message over to the doctor. I am waiting for a call. It's 1:40 am. I just want to know how to examine my cat and if they think it needs an emergency visit (google only tells you so much). Note: I am a member of Aloha Vet, so they should care to see me read more

It has been an absolute nightmare dealing with this vet center. Do not expect to be met with compassion or common sense.

This center manages our two cats and one dog with gentle and thorough care that is planned and also emergencies. I can't say enough good things about all that work here. It is a busy place and the parrot greets everyone with it's "Hello" over and over, and when it is your turn to go into the exam rooms, your doctor is prompt and thorough. We have been here since coming to Big Island in 2014. I would recommend this center and it's health team to anyone needing vet services for their animals. read more

This is the first time I'm writing and was very happy and satisfied with my visit ever to a vet center. First off, the staff a super nice and very helpful. And secondly, my pet's doctor, Dr. Alana Kapust, was very kind and professional. I highly recommend her to any pet owner. Now, for anyone thinking of taking their pet in as a walk in it's a $40 charge and a total of $75 for the vet to perform a physical and look at your pet. I had to do this route as they were very booked and my cat (*who is a kitten still) was very sick. I had conveyed my concerns to the woman who worked reception and she was extremely understanding and told me that my best chances at getting my cat looked at was a couple of hours later when the next doctor was going to be checking in as the current doctor was tied up performing some kind of surgery on another patient. Needless to say, my cat was taken in and I was very happy. Not going to lie though, I did end up with a bill a little over $200 which I was a little overwhelmed over but it was all worth it in the end. For those curious as what I had to pay and what you may to-- Aside from the walk in and physical fee, the vet had performed an x-ray (which I think was $75) and given my cat a couple of medicines and fluids to treat him (my cat's a boy) since he was vomitting excessively, constipated, and severely dehyrated from not drinking, eating or using the bathroom. Over all though, worth the visit. I had looked around the other vet clinics online and read horror story reviews, not to mention my sister's co-worker who's also a pet owner stirred me away from those other places, so I was a little nervous walking into this clinic. I mean, I read some of the reviews were pretty mixed, a mixture of good and bad but I had to take this chance if I wanted to get my baby some help. Anyway, a couple of hours after the visit he's acting like his normal self and finally eating and drinking again. Just waiting on him to use the bathroom so I can monitor his bowel movements. I have a following check up in two days so hopefully my cat's health will be back to a 100%. Wish me luck! read more

POOR emergency relations. although they claim Compassionate care and to promote the best care available, my dog died because I Listened to the advice to wait for 3 days of no eating but still drinking after trying to tell the receptionist that it started with bloody diarrhea turning liquidy after eating a lamb bone. The receptionist had a hard time with processing the information and had to repeat myself several times and she still sounded confused. I was not feeling comfortable with the answer so a little bit later i called back and the emergency services answered and said to talk to the vet I need to pay upfront with a credit card to talk to him even though I just talked i to the vet center. So I figured I would wait till morning to see if she was doing any better. My mistake was listening to wait. Where is the compassion when you are greeted as a previous client pay first before they will listen. I would have been happy to add it to the bill for services. there is not a lot of compassion when they tell you several times to pay upfront and if you can pay. which I told them I could. I understand there are people who do not pay or cannot, but then leave out the compassionate and be the best. This vet center is too overbooked to provide professional and competent patient-centered care. I really think the doctors and techs mean well, but the business is so poorly organized they don't have time to provide good care. I wasn't going to write a negative review, so I sent a thoughtful feedback email to the staff. But after they hardly acknowledged or responded to my concerns, I'd like to tell other pet owners to avoid this vet if you can, since they don't seem to care to improve. They will likely take you on schedule sooner than some other vet clinics, but expect a wait of AT LEAST an hour, even if you are scheduled well in advance. This is a result of completely over-scheduling. The veterinarians are exhausted to the point where they won't even remember your pet, after multiple visits. I met with Dr. Rodrigues to discuss concerns about my pet having dental work, as she is elderly and has heart failure and kidney disease, and he assured me that the benefits of having her tooth (or teeth) removed outweighed the risks of the procedure, even with her complicated health. We agreed on the procedure, to remove an infected tooth which was causing issues. When I picked up my dog after the procedure, I found out that they didn't remove any teeth, but only did a general cleaning. Then when I tried to have the doctor explain to me why, he didn't even remember my dog and told me to come back in a week for the follow-up (where I waited another 1.5 hours for just a 10 minute visit). I would have NEVER put her under the stress of that procedure if we didn't agree that the tooth NEEDED to be removed. Now, about 2 months later, my dog continues to need antibiotics for recurring dental infections, and her kidneys are struggling to recover from the stress of the anesthesia and overall procedure. When I found another vet (thankfully), and got a 2nd opinion, they said her kidneys are now so damaged that she cannot handle another procedure. I wasted so much time and money at this place, only to have such a terrible outcome, that cannot be undone. :( read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. THEY ARE MURDERING ANIMALS. My cat had a blockage and took him here. Female vet operated on his bladder and said operation was successful. That vet was gone two days later, not sure why. Owner vet operated on my cat and removed his penis saying he would die unless it was done. Even though night staff and female vet said all was fine. He charged me $1,000. Four days after cat castration my cat was winning in pain. The surgery had closed all ways for him to pee or poop. Owner vet had no remorse and is definitely unskilled at his job. Money hungry, And charged my credit card another $1,000 after my cat died in excruciating PAIN! Thankfully my credit card company refunded due to no proof for charge. I should of woke up during daily visits to my pet and seeing multiple people leaving crying with dead pets! DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED PETS HERE! MONEY HUNGRY PET KILLERS! Everyday I am guilty for putting my loved pet in the hands of this murdering vet! read more

I do not blame Dr. K in the FULL death of my baby, but I do believe she had a helping hand in his suffering. I went to her with a list of my concerns and reasons of my visit and she disregarded them from the moment I told her the first one. Instead of listening to my worries about my baby suddenly pooping in the house, the only thing she said was "well, my dog poops every time he sees a suitcase". I feel like this was the ONE time, the ONLY visit that would have determined the outcome of my baby boys life. She prescribed steroids and heartgard. I told her I already purchased the heartgard last visit. When I went to pay for the visit I was charged and given another box of heargard. Even more so I knew she wasn't listening to me. After this visit my baby never got better, his health declined in a matter of one month. Our baby died January 31. This was the first Valentines Day in 11 years we didn't have our baby here to celebrate with us. To be fair... my only complaint is how we were treated (or disregarded) by this ONE Dr. The front staff, techs and the other Dr's were wonderful. They commonly overbook and now they have more customers than they really can handle adequately. The front office staff is somewhat new and untrained and extremely rude. The quality of their overall customer service is atrocious. I am steering clear of this rat trap and would sincerely advise others that care about their loved pets to look elsewhere. Calling your business "ALOHA Veterinary" is a sick joke. I had a really messed up experience at the vet's in Hilo today and need to share. I will preface this story by saying I believe a vet's first responsibility is to HEAL not HARM, and their second responsibility is to lead, inspire and educate. Anyway, first visit to this vet I noticed NO rescue flyers, NO spay and neuter posters. I thought that was odd. In my experience, vets are Ground Zero for helping pets. Then, this morning I'm standing at the counter for my second appointment and I open a notebook filled with dozens and dozens of snapshots of dogs with their ears hacked off. I ask "what is this for?" thinking it is a "please don't do this" pictorial. One of the workers chirpily says "Oh, we do ear cropping here!" THEY LITERALLY HAVE A SHOPPING CATALOG FOR YOU TO CHOOSE THE STYLE OF DISFIGUREMENT YOU WANT TO INFLICT ON YOUR PET. So I say "Are you telling me this vet's office purposely mutilates dogs?" And she says "Well yes, lots of our clients request it." So I say "So if I requested you amputate my dog's leg, you'd just do it cuz I requested it?" She says "Oh NO, we wouldn't do THAT!" I say "Please inform the doctor that I am a new client that will not be returning after this visit, because cutting dogs' ears off for fashion is WRONG." She looks at me like I'm completely insane and says "Oh, I guess SOME people might feel that way". By this time the whole office is staring at us. I am so agitated by now I say "SOME PEOPLE?!?!? You know what? Forget it! I'm cancelling this appointment NOW! Mutilating dogs for fashion is WRONG and you shouldn't be doing it!" Then I stormed out of there crying...'cause you know, Crybaby. PS I understand that many people chop their dogs' ears off, not for fashion, but for FIGHTING. Since this makes me even MORE agitated, I didn't mention it. Again: I BELIEVE A VET'S FIRST RESPONSIBILITY IS TO HEAL NOT HARM, AND THEIR SECOND RESPONSIBILITY IS TO LEAD, INSPIRE AND EDUCATE. read more

We've been going to Aloha Vet for almost 20 years. Throughout the two lives of our golden retrievers, 3 cats, and now our two 2-year-old little cavalier/chihuahua rescues. We've always been met with aloha, kindness, expert care, and affordable costs. Most recently, Dr. Rodrigues performed surgery for severe patella luxation on my boy. It's been almost 6 months since and his leg is stronger than ever. He's even participating in dog agility with no signs that there was ever a problem to begin with! Horrible! Called for emergency care for my cat who had a dime-sized hole in her belly on a Saturday night and never received a call back - ever. I was told I would not be charged until I spoke with the ER vet but was charged anyway. At least one person at the call center hung up on me 3 times! I got better free service when I called a vet hospital in California where I got FREE advice until I could get her to a vet. There is no actual emergency vet hospital in this area that is available 24/7 like in larger cities, and most vets, disappointingly, will not see your animal unless they are already a patient, even in an emergency. Sadly, my cat had been seen by Aloha before and they still ignored her. I did get a refund after calling back during regular business hours. She has a new vet but I am not optimistic of quality care in this area. read more

Our fifteen year old dog, Daisy, was naughty and dug through a wastebasket in my office and ended up with a fishhook in her lower lip. We called on a Saturday morning and they allowed us to come down immediately, without an appointment, to be seen. The front desk staff was amazing and we waited only ten or so minutes for them to fit her in. Because of her age, they opted to use a local anesthetic rather than a general. In just twenty minutes, she was happy and we were on our way. Thanks very much to the staff and the doctor for their kindness and professionalism. The fee was very reasonable. We were, ironically, due to travel to Kona to get pet food that we could not find locally... they had the food available at the vet and we purchased some and ordered more. read more

It's so sad that such a great veterinary clinic can lose customers by hiring the wrong girl. Several times that I have brought my pets here I have been treated beyond rudely! Today took the cake, sadly I may not be back. Drs. are good but front desk needs help! And I'm kind of a regular. Today I encountered Veronica - it was not good. Thinks she's a princess I suppose, but she's not. Blonde and bad. Should get someone else with aloha!!! read more

These folks truly love animals! When my mom passed away, our family had to decide what to do with her two aging kitty cats. The staff was very kind and the Doctor was an obvious animal lover who was caring and professional who helped us decide the best plan for mom's favorite four-legged friends. read more

I just had to take my 8 week old puppy in because she wasn't eating and started having issues walking. They were booked when I got there but after talking to the ladies at the front desk for awhile they said they could squeeze her in. The doctor was with us shortly and quickly gave us a diagnosis then had us on our way. Everyone was so sweet and I felt extremely at ease throughout everything. I would highly recommend Aloha Vet to anyone needing a great, loving and supportive vet. read more

Dr. Rodrigues, Dr. Lei, and the rest of the staff is great. Parking is a little tight here, but location is good. We get a pet mailer that has interesting articles from Aloha vet also. We would recommend this vet for any pets and their parents. Keep doing great work! read more
