Losing a pet…read moreis so heartbreaking as they are part of our family, they give us unconditional love, support and comfort. However, my last experience there was horrific. I've been going there for years up to now. Besides the fact that you have a scheduled appointment, but end up waiting at least an hour to be seen is a different story. That i can handle and that's not my complaint. My complaint is that the staff at Maikai Vet are so uncompassionate and rude especially when your pet has just died. I took my dog in for a scheduled surgery. I dropped him off at 8:00am and they called me throughout the day with updates. Well, at 6:30pm, they called me and told me to come and pick up my dog. Keana (she told me she was an intern) came out carrying my dog. I am unfamiliar with pet surgeries so i didn't think anything of it. My husband took our dog and was carrying him. I noticed that he had bubbles/foam coming out from his mouth. i asked to see Dr Mina and was told he was busy. i asked her if that foaming was normal. She told me yes and that it's from the anesthesia. Stupid me ... i accepted that excuse. She went over a whole bunch of medications with me. There were so many that i started to write things down so i don't get anything mixed up. She had the nerve to say "i don't know why you have to write it down, it's on the bottles". I know it was after hours but don't rush me especially with so many medications and which ones can't be taken with the other ones. Well, on the way home, my dog died. I was so heartbroken. I called the vet right away and they told me to bring him back to the clinic. So i did, by this time, it's 8:00pm. I was holding him in my arms, crying hysterically. No one, not a single person came out to tell me sorry or give me any kind of sympathy. They did ask me if i wanted to spend more time with my dog, i asked for a room and they told me i could sit in the waiting room with my dead dog. There were other people in the the waiting room.....why would i want to sit there holding my dead dog, crying and everyone watching me. I asked to speak to Dr Mina and was told that he's busy. Wait....it gets better.....i left my dog there, paid for cremation. They told me the cremation place will pick him up within that week. I waited 2 weeks to see if his ashes came back - they told me they have not received it back yet. I waited another week and called again. They told me his ashes has not come back yet. I asked who picked up my dog. They told me Sunset Pet Memorial. I called Sunset Pet Memorial, they guy there was so helpful and told me he has no record of my dog being picked up. I called Maikai back and told them Sunset does not have my dog. I demanded to know where my dog was. 2 hours later, i received a text message stating they are sorry, but my dog was not picked up as the tag fell off. How would the tag fall off? It's not like my dead dog was up walking around in the freezer. By this time my dog was in their freezer for 4 weeks. Does Maikai staff not check their freezer? Question why the same dog has been in there for 4 weeks? I finally got my dogs ashes after 5 weeks. I have not gotten any callbacks from Dr Mina, after leaving many messages for a call back. Nor did i get any sympathy from any staff there for leaving my dog in the freezer for 4 weeks. Instead i got excuses. There should be no excuse. I will not take any of my pets there again.

Both doctors patiently listened to any questions/concerns I had. Everyone, from front desk staff to vet techs are friendly and welcoming. I also appreciate the fact that they are open 6 days a week (8 am to 6 pm) with emergency services on Saturday from 12-4, which shows that Aloha Veterinary Center is making an effort to fulfill veterinary care in the community.

Dr. Lyons is incredibly sweet and supportive--she always puts us at ease during visits. The vet tech is amazing too; they never forget us and always greet us like old friends. One of the best decisions I made was establishing care early on. It's the peace of mind knowing that when something comes up, we already had a trusted team ready to go. The location and the parking lot has easy access too. There's no 24/7 vet care on the Big Island, which is something I wish we had, but knowing I have a solid daytime team ready to go makes a huge difference.

I picked up a playful take on POG Juice called 'Pawesome O-Guava,' which my pup absolutely loved--she's a big fan of a crunchy toy! I used to take my two mini poodles to another vet (one that is very highly reviewed here!), and their service was so poor that I switched - I'm so glad I did! When Scooby bit a cane toad in the middle of the night, Dr. Castro met me at his office and stayed for hours to administer medicine and monitor Scooby's recovery. When Sam fell off the back stairs, Dr. Castro managed to calm me down AND make sure Sam had no serious injuries - they weren't even open when it happened, but they didn't hesitate to have me bring Sam in. Seriously - the office is humble and may not look like much, but Dr. Castro knows what he is doing, AND cares about animals, AND is very affordable. Best vet ever!

When we went into the exam room, the doctor brought his two big dogs in the room too, " to comfort " my cat. But it freaked him out instead. So Dr Pease said he would give my cat a sedative to help calm him down. Dr Pease finished a complete exam and exclaimed that his weight was smaller than he thought when he administered the sedative. He said my cat would wake up after a few hours and to let him sleep in his carrier. My cat never woke up. I informed the vet. They expressed no concern or remorse. They charged me a few hundred dollars for this! As if this wasn't bad enough. The following year the office sent me a reminder card to schedule an appointment for my cats annual check up! I had to call them to remind them that they had murdered my cat the prior year! After that they sent a condolence card. This vet is so totally out of touch. He should not be in practice.

I first started seeing Dr. Bill, who I really liked a lot, and more recently I've been working with Dr. Amelia, who has been absolutely fantastic. I have two senior kitties with hyperthyroidism, and she has been incredibly attentive and compassionate with their care. If lab results don't come back the same day, she will personally call me in the evening after work to make sure I get the results. That level of dedication means a lot. Any time I've had questions and reached out by email, even after hours, she has responded herself. She is always kind, patient, and genuinely caring, not just toward me, but toward my pets as well. The staff is just as wonderful. Shelly and Pua, who I've interacted with the most, have been exceptional every time. That said, every single person I've encountered, from the vet techs to the front office staff, has been warm, friendly, and caring. I truly cannot recommend this veterinary practice enough. I've referred so many people here over the years that I've lost count, and I will continue to do so.

Dr. Bill trusted my experience and worked with me many times to treat injuries at home when appropriate. He prioritized the animal's well‑being over financial barriers. Under the new vet, Zach, that standard disappeared -- and it resulted in the preventable death of my dog, Milo. When I arrived, I disclosed immediately that I had $500 available. Milo had been attacked by the pack late Friday night; at that time no clinics were open over the weekend, so I had to wait until Monday. In the meantime, the wounds were draining and showing signs of infection. He needed basic laceration care: numbing agent, sterile saline wound irrigation, wound repair, and antibiotics. I have a pack of 8 dogs. Fights happen; when they do, I am very experienced at effectively taking care of the injuries. If the injuries are above my skill level, it is off to the vet. At PAH, Dr. Zach admonished me about delaying bringing Milo in for treatment. He said that I had been neglectful. I repeatedly reminded him of the clinic hours and the fact that it was closed on the weekends. The fight happened at 11 pm on a Friday night. I told him and the staff that I only had $500 (borrowed Rather than providing basic care within my budget, DR. Zach presented me with a mandatory $1800 treatment package that included non‑essential add‑ons such as a heartworm test, nail trim, and other unrelated charges. When I declined the unnecessary items and requested only the medically appropriate care, the vet refused to treat Milo unless I agreed to the entire list. then added that Milo would be dead by morning without his treatments. During this interaction, Zach stated, "This is a business." That sentence made the priorities clear. My dog's emergency was treated as a revenue opportunity, not a medical situation. When I held my financial boundary, Zach escalated, raised his voice, claimed he "felt threatened," terminated the relationship, and refused to provide the most basic essential care. Milo was euthanized, not because his condition was untreatable, but because the clinic would not provide the care within my disclosed financial limit. Shortly after Milo's death, the clinic posted a lengthy policy statement online outlining refusal‑of‑service rules, conduct termination rules, financial deposit requirements, and liability waivers. These policies were not present before the incident. Their timing speaks for itself. We just moved to hilo on Jan 4th and before we came here I put in multiple applications for 2 different puppies, on Friday I called this place to confirm that they still had puppies because we wanted to adopt one or two. Not ONCE did the lady on the phone advise that we weren't allowed to purchase 2 puppies at a time, nor did she mentioned before even brining a pet home the application has to be confirmed on their site (which I completed a couple weeks before we moved), plus it will take like 3 days before even bringing the puppy home. That aside, we walked in with our 2 boys excited to bring a puppy home, and when we went to the counter the lady out right said we won't be able to take a puppy today due the one million reasons that she mentioned which made no sense and made it seem like I had no Idea what liter syndrome meant. My sons were bent outta shape because of those words. FYI, next time, talk to me and not to everyone else in the room behind me. We purchased dogs from humane society countless years and to have to be turned down because we are not a right fit family for puppies is like a slap in the face especially when we bought our 2 puppies from this place at the same time. I feel this decision was more based on a personal choice on my response to the first lady I spoke to, instead of hearing what questions I had she kept telling me that we couldn't have two puppies due to litter syndrome. We understand littermate syndrome, but when you take correcrive actions and extensive training with your dogs, that won't happen as we do our own. Do we all really know their personalities? No, but as the owners, it's our due diligence to teach them right from wrong. Studies are saying "littermate syndrome" is not even a real thing. We label problems with two young dogs as "having Littermate Syndrome," because we absolve ourselves from the responsibility to fix problems that humans created and can't resolve. See, the problem isn't the dogs. The problem is peoples ability to address their individual needs. It's easier to label a syndrome than to just give more TLC and understand stand them. On that note, you sent me this email the day after saying I'm not a fit? So much for waiting 3 days and calling to see if we are a fit when we meet with the counselor. That is ok! I went to Rainbow friends animal sanctuary and we rehomed a dog, and someone just so happily allowed us to rehome their 2 puppies that were left at their front door This place is such a disappointment. Going forward, I will not recommend this place to anyone anymore. Even though my 2 other dogs came from here, and we love them dearly. This place will be the last on my list now, not #1 it took less then 24hrs for them to tell my family we are not a fit before even giving us the chance. The slogan should not be providing them a good home. The lady after us asked for 2 kittens, and you were gladly open to having her adopt them after she just mentioned her current cats' lack of health for many reasons that did not match up! Go figure! The care you give for cats is not the same as dogs? Why is that? Should we not give the animals all the same care, love, and treatment? Seems like it's a preference here and bad choices! I'm done venting, but if you are looking for dogs and puppies there are many other adoption places to go that will give you better service then this place its sad that I recommended this place to a bunch of families and they actually said they were turned down too and got their dogs else where. Please feel free to share your family requirements and what makes the best families for these animals? All these people are opening their homes, and you're denying it, but crying that you have no shelter space.......this could be one of the biggest reasons. Look where you lack the experience, which is assumptions and judgment!
