I have a very reactive dog and we put off taking him to the vet because of this. but the doctors and nurses were very accommodating and once we got in the room they made sure he was comfortable and not nervous. Came here with my fiancé, he is a Dog Whisperer. One of the dogs he had for board and train was experiencing allergic dermatitis. We were both very impressed at how down to earth, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced this clinic was. I wish more veterinary clinics were run as well as this one is. The Veterinarian brought us into the back with him and spoke to us in a very comforting and casual manner. I've seen a number of Vets in Hilo. It was really hard to find a clinic we felt consistently comfortable with. I stumbled upon Hilo Vet Clinic when referred there to get a quick X-ray. That one short visit made me want to establish care for all my pets, almost immediately. Ever since - we've had the BEST experience. My 11 week old puppy had gotten run over by accident. As I raced out the door to find ANY vet that would see her this was our first call down the list. Like many East Hawaii Island residents, Dr.Castro or Dr.Gruene was our go-to in the past. They were closing for lunch but stayed open to see her. From the first glance they're a "small but mighty" clinic, but you can tell that the staff works well together as a team and compassion was more than evident. We've taken 2 of our dogs here and they were indescribably great with both of them. One dog had gotten into a toad and was having seizures. Obviously we were scared and upset. They did a great job calming us and giving us the options. Fortunately it all worked out and his seizures stopped after the first dosage of the medication they gave us. I can whole heartedly say I trust this Doctors,staff n establishment 100%. I went to pick up my baby at the vet and got called to the back office. doc came in and said Meeshka surgery was good but they encountered a complication while in surgery and her heart stopped . They started CPR on her and the staff were all so concerned, rooting for her to pull through. She miraculously came back. I was wondering why when we got there everyone was carrying her n checking her. such an awesome crew so caring, loving and attentive. After 6 years I finally found a vet that's in it for the animals and not just the money. The rest of the vets in east Hawaii island don't seem to care if your animal is suffering. You can't plan when your dog is sick or, God forbid, needs to be put down. But vets in Hawaii charge you enormous prices if you don't have an appointment. Everyone in this office has so much compassion for you and your animal. I'd like to give a shout-out to Zoe. She needs a raise guys! You'd be crazy to lose her. Dr Castro and his staff are amazing! They're so down to earth. You may walk in and think that they're office isn't "fancy", but that's the beauty of their office. They use common sense. My dog suffered for several years with a skin rash and constant yeast infections, only Dr Castro was able to figure out that it was his diet. We removed poultry and sure enough, never a rash again. They are the most caring and loving vets I've ever had. They treat you and your pet as family. I recently lost my dog and the compassion and dedication they showed towards us was beyond compare. Dr. Castro and his wife Ann have been caring for my dogs since 2004. Dr. Castro has always been very attentive and focused, renewing his acquaintance with the dogs first before giving them a thorough exam. None of my three dogs has ever had the slightest fear or trepidation about going to visit Dr. Castro. He has uncovered serious issues other than the original issue I made the appointment for, and he has gone out of his way, as has Ann, in emergency situations in their efforts to save my dog's lives. Dr. Castro is both cautious, and expedient, as each situation demands, and I am thoroughly happy and grateful for the care he has provided my dogs. It is a great relief for any pet owner to know that their animals are in the best of hands, and Boyd and Ann Castro have excelled at providing that comfort. read more

Dr Castro has been our vet since moving to the island about 9 years ago. We have always received excellent care for our pets. Dr Castro and his wife have always been great and super helpful. When one of our pets became very ill and suffered seizures, Ann quickly got us in. Later, after a diagnosis of a brain tumor, they were very compassionate and when we made the decision to let her go rather than suffer any more, Dr Castro sat beside me and cried along with me as he walked me through what to expect. When our other pet developed diabetes, he worked with us on adjusting her medications (she had a worsening heart murmur as well), and had us submit a weekly report via email on her glucose levels and he would call us personally if he thought we needed to make a change. When her condition worsened and we made the decision to let her go, he and Ann were both comforting and compassionate, and sad they could not do more. They treated both of our babies as their own and we could not be happier to have them as our veterinarian. They are like family to us. read more

I have been coming to Dr. Castros office for about 5 years, for my dads 3 pets and 1 year for my husband and I's cat and dog. Today we went in to get our pets their health certificates for travel and also for flea and worm medicine. When we arrived, Dr. Castro's receptionist/wife told us very rudely that they were booked for the whole month and could not do it. She told us to go to The Pet Hospital. My husband and I went there and made the appointment for our furr babies. The receptionist there was so sweet and helpful. Afterwards, we went back to Dr. Castros because we had forgotten to buy the flea and worm medicine. The receptionist (large Asian woman) was so down right mean it was unbelievable. She kept saying (very rudely while rolling her eyes) that I am not in their system. She said if I don't have my pets in their system, she can't help us. I was just there for my pets medicine a month ago! She typed my maiden name and then my new married name, she refused to say she found me in their system but I know I was in there. My husband and I explained the weight and age (cat 12 pounds, dog is 8) of our pets to her and she started yelling back saying "what the thing is it a dog or a cat? Dog or a cat???? They are NOT both 8 pounds!!!" She started snapping like a crazy person about something we never even said. I repeated very calmly what I said earlier and she started slamming objects on the table and huffing and puffing. I told my husband "wow, how many times do we have to say the same thing." And she said "I won't even sell to you if you're gonna have an attitude!!" I just said mhm. After she sold us the flea and worm medicine-- and the rudest customer service experience my husband and I have ever experienced, my husband told her that her approach is not the way to get repeat customers... And I continued to tell her to watch her attitude. If you're reading this, miss receptionist, I hope you work on how you treat other people. Your husband didn't go to medical school just to have you run his business into the ground. Check yourself. Do NOT recommend this horrible place. read more
