While waiting for our table at Hawaiian Style Café, we popped into Aloha Paws, and I'm so glad we did! As a devoted dog person, I was excited to browse their adorable selection of dog toys and accessories. The store is filled with charming items, making it a perfect stop for pet owners. In addition to the cute toys and collars, they also had a great selection of high-quality dog foods and snacks. Everything looked clean, healthy, and thoughtfully curated--perfect for giving my pup the best treats and nutrition. I picked up a playful take on POG Juice called 'Pawesome O-Guava,' which my pup absolutely loved--she's a big fan of a crunchy toy! Although I was hoping to find a Hawaiian flower collar in her size, I'm optimistic I'll find it next time I visit. If you're in Hilo and have a beloved furry friend, Aloha Paws is definitely worth a visit. I'll be returning on my next trip for sure! read more

I looked for pet stores in Hawaii on Instagram and found them. Also had recommendations from others to check out this place. They have a ton of items but what I was specifically looking for was locally made treats. They had 2-3 brands from local small businesses. There was also a local brand for Hawaiian pet shirts and bandanas. Petco is a nice option too for local items but it's nice to support small businesses. A long awaited oasis of quality pet food. They stock Honest Kitchen dehydrated dog food which I think is about the best commercial dog food you can buy, and was previously unavailable anywhere on the island. From my (admittedly not extensive) price checking you will pay about $20 more per box of Honest Kitchen at Aloha Pawz than at Amazon (about 20% "paradise tax") BUT --- AND THIS IS A BIG BUT --- (insert rap lyric reference here) ---- once I broke down and actually purchased the item from Aloha Pawz I learned at checkout that Aloha Pawz has a LOYALTY PROGRAM that gives you 10% back. Spend $250 and you get a $25 credit. So, if you buy your Honest Kitchen there regularly it brings the price premium down to only about 10% vs Amazon according to my "back of the napkin" arithmetic. Which in my book is manageable in support of a good local business. In addition to Honest Kitchen they have the Champion brands Orijen and Acana and a more moderately priced line as well. The Orijen and Acana will give you a 13th bag free when you buy 12 bags so there's additional loyalty savings available there as well. When I price checked the 25 pound bag of Acana ($101.99 at Aloha Pawz) it was $96.99 with Amazon Prime so in that case Aloha Pawz actually beats Amazon when you factor in the 10% loyalty program !!! Aloha Pawz also stocks a frozen raw food that's made on the big island --- but out of my budget for my dogs' appetites. They do have a cat section but I can't comment on that since I don't do cats, sorry. Staff was friendly and helpful on both of my visits. Aloha Pawz seriously has the BEST selection of little toys. Even compared to a boutique I frequent on the mainland. Please keep up the great work! Our favorites to pick up for our shiba inu, Kitsu: - Blueberry cobbler cookies (that you can easily break in half) - Small squeaking toys (fabric, not rubber ones. A few of our favorites include a rock w/ 3 tiny crabs, a barn w/ 3 tiny piggies!) - Miscellaneous local or holiday costumes (local prints!) And, they take FiveStars. Staff are amazing here. Every time Ive gone to Aloha Pawz the staff has been wonderful to me and my dog. Theyve always had great recommendations for food, treats, and gear for my mutt. Weve also found all kinds of cool locally-themed treats and toys there for my brother and his wifes cats. They love their cats A LOT, and so its nice to be able to give them gifts that they might never have found otherwise. This store keeps getting better. They upgraded to a seamless loyalty program called FiveStars, which I am a huge advocate for as a frequent flyer to Big Island Juice Co and Aloha Pawz. I don't have to worry about loosing my points card which gets lost in my black hole of a purse. They also took the opportunity to get some Honest Kitchen dog food. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. I use the premix base mostly and prepare my own protein and add a few other ingredients for wholesomeness but THANK YOU Aloha Pawz for listening to your customers. I believe they expended their hours from 9am to 6pm which is great for my schedule. They've brought in other great brands like Merrick recently to if I am not mistaken and Raw Dog Hawaii. My dogs love the liver but I can do without the liver farts. I think my only next best suggestion would be probiotoics. Something without all the by products, corn, wheat or vegetable oil. As of right now I am creating my own 'mix' with plain organic yogurt and adding Saccharomyces boulardii from refrigerated capsules I get from Vitamin Shoppe brand called Garden of Life. By the way if you don't already know the benefits of Saccharomyces boulardii do some reading about the amazing benefits it has for dogs prone to digestive upsets. I did an article on it for my website and it believe its the secret probiotic no one really knows about yet and I always recommend it to anyone dog or human to take it when using antibiotics. There are so many wonderful things about this business that I absolutely love!!! When we pull up to the parking stall, our little weenie dog, Midgy, gets very vocal with excitement and can't wait to get out of the car and charge in there! They have the best most genuine hearts and you can feel their love for the animals when you are in there. They are awesome with humans and animals They have a great selection of healthy food and treats for your fur babies. My dog has a lot of allergies, which makes it difficult to find treats that do not flare up her allergies. She is allergic to pork and liver...the two main ingredients in most dog treats. So most treats need to state chicken breast and not just chicken and does not have all the byproducts. This store has a lot of natural products with minimal ingredients.
