This little grooming spot on Keawe St. has an open setup with two tables, which I really appreciate--it feels transparent and personal to see the staff working so attentively. They don't always get to the phone if things are busy, but I walked in to schedule my appointment and it worked out just fine. I like to book the first slot of the day so my fur-keiki can get all their grooming steps done back-to-back. One morning, I ran late because of meetings, and they still made time for us, which I really appreciated. That flexibility and understanding meant a lot. We recently moved here to the Big Island and was in search for a groomer for our Shitzu Ali. He has had a really bad experience with a groomer at Petco on Oahu and ever since then it has been so hard taking him to get groomed because previous groomers can't finish grooming him and would always say he was to difficult to cut and didn't want to take him anymore. I heard only good things about Downtown dogs and decided to try them out. Mahea took Ali even though I had informed her that he was difficult. I am very impressed with the service provided by Downtown dogs. I took my dog in as her nails were severely overgrown and I didn't know how to care for them. Picked up my dog she her nails are beautiful trimmed way better than I could ever do it. She had a shampoo done and her ears are clean brushed her teeth and all she looks amazing. My dog is now so happy that she just wants to sit in my lap. The price is affordable and the service is excellent. I called made an appointment for a couple of days ahead of time they got me right in and I found parking right in the front and was very thankful of my dog loose is very very happy so I'm happy. My sister recommended them because she takes her Maltese Shitzu there. My Brody is a short haired mini dachshund. He really needed to get a professional cleaning and nails cut but he gets nervous around other people and animals, so I was a bit nervous. We took him to another place in town but they never returned my phone calls to schedule so we wanted to try Downtown Dogs. My husband and I went in a couple months ago to talk to someone about how Brody's temperament is and when would be a good time to schedule. Mahea was very kind and suggested we bring him in in the later afternoons, when there's not as much dogs but not to worry if there was other dogs because he would eventually start getting used to the interaction with others. She made us feel very comfortable about taking Brody there. I just took him in yesterday and he looks so much happier. I could tell he was nervous at first, but when I picked him up he looked great! Okay now I was trying to open minded and try this place out for the first time but the customer service was unbelievably bad. I nearly had to beg to ask for an appt. She told me she was closing soon. Literally, she was so vague and unwilling to help me book an appt with my dog. At one point I thought she was hanging up on me because she was closing. Clearly another fine moment in Hilo for Customer Service. Also, the dogs barking in the back round didn't help either as I could barely think as my ear was echoing. She did apologies for that but other than that I have no interest in going here just because of the customer service. Lets be clear here too. My dogs hair cut cost more than mine so the service better be great and I just did not feel like they wanted my $$$. read more

Really bad service honestly compared to other places I've taken my dog. She's a little Maltese I couldn't get her in anywhere else so I tried downtown dogs for the first time. Her nails aren't even cut! Her back ones are cut a little but very sharp like they're poorly cut. She wasn't soft when I picked her up and her hair was all over me which never happened before when I picked her up from other places. She still had the tear mark by her eyes which seemed like they never cleaned at all. VERY VERY BIG disappointment, especially when your paying them over 50$. I don't recommend anyone to take their dog here. Over priced for bad quality of work. read more

Brigette was awesome! She is a dog whisperer! Our big, rowdy, difficult to control rescue dog was putty in her hands. She hand combed through dozens of mats and tangles and gently brought our dog to show quality grooming! She was gentle and adept at grooming, and was careful and thorough in making sure our dog's coat was clean, evenly cut and well-groomed. She even trimmed her nails and filed them! We have never seen our dog relax and 'flow' with anyone- she loved her THREE hours of grooming! Dog Spa Time! We'll be taking our three other rescue dogs to her in the future! read more

I have had three bad experiences here. I have gone three times. The first time I went, all seemed well. My dog looked good, she seemed kind and capable. When I tried to make another appointment, I had to call three times. Once I left a message. About two weeks later I was finally able to get in. Then she complained about how I had waited too long to have him groomed and as a result he was "matted." Then I explained that I had called 3x previously. She said that COULDNT be true since she checks her messages every day and calls back. However, I had my phone records to prove that I had indeed called several times before, and I pointed out the call that had a longer time because I left a message. The call log showed that she had never called me back, but she still didnt believe me. The last two times I was delayed because of very long condescending lectures I recieved. She called me during a meeting and kept me on the phone for twenty minutes to complain that she was going to have to charge me and additional $35 an hour, on top of the $50+ to groom, to "dematte" my dog. She went on insinuating how many hours it would take and how much business she would lose, but in the end it took her only 30minutes. Clearly not as big of an issue as she wanted to make it seem. She accused me of not brushing my dog, and not using the correct brush. She lectured me for probably a good 15 min. I have been taking my dogs to groomers for four years. Never has anyone complained that they were unkempt. The total bill was a whomping $70. I went and I bought the exact brush she showed me and have been brushing my little guy twice a week. Even this morning he got a brush before we went in. However, the same lady touched my dog and immediately began her condescending crap about how clearly neglected my dog had been. I told her I bought the exact same brush, that she showed me, and I was even going to bring it in to prove it because she didnt believe me! But she said it didnt even matter if I had bought the correct brush because clearly I didnt know how to use it. Isnt that why I pay a professional? Then she began demonstrating on my dog with a brush that was 3 x smaller, and ofcourse easier to use. She went on and on about how deplorable he was and how obviously incapable I was. My dogs fur was longer this time because we were visiting family for a month in subzero weather. He needed his fur. Now that we are home, I scheduled as soon as I could to get a grooming. She tried to say that clearly he hadnt been brushed, and also that his skin was pink from too much brushing. How can both be true? She said it would take another $70 to groom him. Or for $50 she could use the clippers and clip him short to a level that I "could handle." She promised that he would get a "very nice grooming" and listed all the the items, including nails, teeth, etc. When I came to pick him up, and paid another $50, all of his poodle poofs were sheared off and he was trimmed like a puppy. It will take MONTHs for his fur to grow in normal. Clearly they had passive aggressively done a shoddy job, and hadnt bothered to look him over because they think they can get away with doing a subpar job and blame any residual tangles on me. Under one of his legs they left a big knot in his fur that is longer than the rest of his fur. There is a burr inside the knot that they didnt even bother to remove. His stomach has a small tangle was missed by the trimmer that could easily have been removed, and would have if anyone had bothered to look over my dog before they sent him out. His nails are ragged and rough. I took pictures of the dirt that was still in his fur! In addition, I just paid $50 for her to shear my poodle flat. I could have paid $20 for a crappy haircut from Petco if I had wanted that. And actually, PetSmart never returned my dog to me dirty. This is the third time I have had a bad experience with this company. read more

Horrible! Never been this disappointed in a service. I took my dog in to have his nails trimmed, they clearly were long and sharp. She clipped two of the first four nails too short to the point it caused both pain and bleeding! She then stated "they aren't very long lets just file the rest down so they aren't sharp" clearly she realized my dog would end up with paws of painfully bloody nails if she continued. So now my dog has two bloody nails and badly filed nails that still need to be trimmed. I feel bad for trusting my dog with such poor "professionals". Now that there is bleeding I have to wait several days to go trail hiking to avoid chances of infection. read more

I have a very large dog with Dogzilla nails, but she fights me every time I try to trim them. It's been a terrible experience for both of us with the result that her nails were super overgrown and clicking on the ground when she walked. I happened to be walking my dog in Hilo early one morning and discovered this treasure, Downtown Dogs. They took her in right away!! I thought they would be unable to trim all her nails before my dog won the battle, so I asked if they could just get the worst nails first. The lady reassured me she would get them all and asked me to wait outside of the work area which she said would make it easier. So I sat where my dog couldn't see me and heard the loud click of the clippers doing the work. I took a peek and saw my dog SMILING!!! But as soon as my dog caught me peeking, she took off the happy face, so I went into hiding again. They not only trimmed all her nails, but also finished them with a grinder and all in a way that was stress-free for my dog. When we left, we were both very happy. I loved how this place took such great care for my dog. She is a mixed short hair medium sized dog and loved it. She got bathed twice with medical shampoo for sensitive skin and for shedding, then had conditioner and essential oils on top of that. Then had ears cleaned, the glands cleaned, nails trimmed and to top it off had her teeth cleaned all for a great price. Truthfully my favorite part was that they were able to fit me in last notice and get her done in an hour. It was overall just a great experience, not only do I recommend this place, but I plan to bring her back next month or week depending on how dirty she gets lol. read more

Not sure what it is about dog groomers in Hilo but this is the second time I've called in advance, asked the price with a detailed description of my dog and received a price and a list of what I would receive for that and so made an appointment. Once my dog was finished, the price was drastically increased (almost doubled!!) with some flimsy excuse. I'm not sure why I wasn't told in advance when I 1st showed up and they saw my dog. I'm not even sure this particular groomer even washed my dog! She still smells like the shampoo I use on her here at home. So sadly, I wouldn't return just on principal that I was first deceived and then taken advantage of. I would recommend anyone thinking of going here (or maybe any dog groomer in Hilo) to get your price in writing ahead of allowing your dog to be groomed. To the groomer, I would suggest thinking how you would feel if the situation were reversed; agreeing to a service but then when you're ready to pay, the price is suddenly doubled. Not a good feeling. don't ever take your dog here!!!! i cried for days because my poor scrappy suffered from razor cuts all over his body. especially around his anus and his penis, under his neck and all over his tummy. his paws was still very long and after a week he still is irritated. i'm not sure what they did when they brushed his teeth but for days he kept licking everything around the house which he never did before. if they have a license, it should be discontinued immediately!!!! read more
