The business staff are friendly and welcoming even as they work through their administrative duties. The waiting areas are clean with several areas to sit. We bring our dogs and cat here on a regular basis. It's always a pleasant experience. Dr Lei is knowledgeable and seems to genuinely care about our furries. Also, lower cost treatments and options are always suggested. I don't feel like anyone is taking advantage of us. The staff is friendly and helpful. I have just one complaint. Why are we being forced to wear masks when bringing our pets here? Is it Covid related? This pandemic is over and the data is out. Tech Staff here were not properly trained to handle our dog. My husband brought in our 5 y/o American Bull dog/ Pitt Bull mix (56#) for an anal express ($15) and it all went awry. Our dog left with one less dew claw, a $75 charge for 3 techs to 'handle' her and medication for her injury for a bill of $110+. Wow. The trauma to our girl was palpable. For staff and who are PAID ( not sure if they are trained) by this clinic to care for dogs, you should be ashamed. We're out. Seeking a new vet. Shame on you techs. DO BETTER. You broke our hearts. Took our dog in to this newly built vet after reading reviews. We use to take our dog to another vet in Hawaiian Paradise Park however their services hasn't been great as of late. We were very impressed with the staff and doctor. I can say doctor gave really good service and actually better than some regular doctors that treat humans. Clean & very spacious even got tv's in 2 waiting rooms. There were multiple checkup rooms. Sadly our dog was sick (Nala)and we had to put her down. If you have the money to do cremation for your dog they set everything up for you. We see our dog as part of my family and seen that as no problem. Doc was really knowledgeable and spent a lot of time trying to comfort our dog. I will never forgot our dogs last minutes of her life neither the doc or staff that comfort us. It seems that each time I've brought my dogs here, the wait is longer and the charges are more outrageous. The front desk staff seem to take sadistic pleasure in confirming the outrageous charges, smirking as they wave at the invoice, "Oh, an extra technician was needed," or "Oh, the after-hours $175 fee is ANOTHER fee on top of $125 emergency fee you have already paid." Our last visit was an emergency foot infection for my dog. A total of about 40 minutes was spent in evaluation and a "laceration flush" procedure. Total bill? $830. You might expect that the follow-up check would be included in the procedure fee. Nope. That will be at least another $30, the front desk informs me. read more

Dr. Lei and staff are excellent and very efficient even with the shortage of Veterinarian's on island. I had to euthanize my 16 year old Jack Russell terrier and she was so compassionate and was able to accommodate me with short notice. We are THRILLED that Dr. Lei has opened up the Island Veterinary Center! We took our basset hound to see her today due to an ear infection. Everyone working there exudes aloha! We felt so welcomed, and our little buddy got great care. The facility is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, and they've taken what was a house and created a beautiful clinic. It's clean and comfortable, and I'm confident that my dog got fantastic care. He's seen a lot of different vets over the years and Dr. Lei came up with some ideas we hadn't heard before regarding a chronic illness he has. We will definitely be back! read more

Taken care of me and my 7 dogs and 4 cats since the day I landed on this rock from Oahu. Busy, but that's to be expected. We've walked this walk so many times and it never gets easier except when you have a great vet who has compassion, kindness and a strong duty to serve. I'd be lost with out Dr. Lei, they treat me like family and I even named one of my dogs after her, I mean how could I not?! So much gratitude and patience and understanding, and they aren't just serving me, they serve the entire eastside from hamakua to Volcano. Seriously. But you got to be proactive yourself, as I've seen a lot of people expect their vets to be Gods. Dr Lei and her staff are really awesome!! They are efficient, knowledgeable and very caring. The clinic is clean, spacious and very comfortable. I go to Island Veterinary Center often since I have 4 dogs. They are so helpful to me as I am handicapped and have a hard time with my strong dogs. I don't know what I would do without their help! Our dog Biscuit needed an annual check up and boosters for his shots. We had taken him to another Vet last year but we're unhappy with the aloofness of the staff and Dr. So after some research we decided to try Island Veterinary Center of Hilo. We made our appointment, which was about a month out. Making the appointment was fairly easy and on the day of the appointment we arrived and filled out some paperwork. The clinic itself is rather large. The staff is very friendly. We waited a bit before we were taken to our room and then waited a bit more for the doctor to come in. I'm sorry to say I didn't get the doctors name, but she was very kind, patient and took time to ask questions and speak with me. This wasn't a rush job. After seeing a Biscuit, I walked to the waiting room to pay and it receive some medication he was prescribed. The only critique I may have is that things are a little slow or behind a bit both waiting for a room and waiting to pay but that's not really a big thing. Happy we found a vet that we really like, and will return to. We already made his appointment for next year's follow up The Good: Friendly Dr. and staff. Clean and efficient facility. Reasonable prices The Bad: wait times to be seen and to pay are a bit long. Chances I'll be back: Yes! Happy to have found a veterinarian that is both good and reasonably priced. This is the only vet I will trust!!!! All the staff here are so amazing to me and my boy. They all know him by name and Dr Lei has saved his life twice. We are so impressed with all of the staff and Dr. Lei. We brought our two senior dogs as new patients for an exam, heartworm test, and vaccines. We interacted with four different staff members and Dr. Lei. We found everyone to be kind, gentle and attentive. They listened to our concerns, needs, and questions, which made us feel confident that our dogs will receive proper care if there is an illness or injury. The facility is a beautiful large ranch style home with high ceilings that has been expanded and thoughtfully laid out to provide spaces to wait with your pet in various rooms. The floors are stone and the facility is very clean. The exam rooms are also large with windows which made our dogs feel calm. The doctor was amiable to examine our dogs on the exam room seating, instead of the high metal table. The assistants stepped in to help and we were not asked to lift or restrain our dogs during the exam. There are two separate large parking areas that are fenced, which is a safer environment to move pets in and out of a vehicle and not have to worry about them running out into the street, which is a residential area with minimal traffic. read more

This place is such a terrible place. My dad took his puppy there because she was sick. She was not even able to see the vet because she passed away in the car. My dad already paid money to them and instead of giving my dad back his money they kept most of it. Even after he told them that they only took a stool sample. They kept $175 of his $300 he paid. If they had the animal I'd understand but they didn't even get to see her. They are corrupt and don't care about people or their animals. I'm so pissed right now. We had to have him euthanized, and Dr. Lei and her vet tech were so gentle with us and so caring and sweet. She explained our options and was so understanding. We had 2 pitties. Our oldest had health complications and Dr. Lei treated her; however, Kolus health deteriorated and we needed to put her down. We were devastated but Dr. Lei and her staff were very empathetic and accommodated us. We stayed way past her office hours, on the day of her passing, having such a difficult time saying goodbye! Mahalo Dr. Lei & staff! We now only have Kua and she continues to go to Dr. Lei for her check ups. Dr. Lei is so loving even though some people are afraid of the negative pitbull sterotype (which our girl is NOT). In turn, Kua feels comfortable and enjoys coming to see Dr. Lei. read more

This place sucks. Dr. Lei is super nice but the rest of the staff could use some work. We've come three times and each time wasn't able to leave until 3 hours later. Most of the time was spent just waiting to be seen when we had an appointment then when we finally were able to see the doctor, it took about 5 minutes. Then we have to wait again just to check out. The girls in the front aren't very friendly and are very disorganized. Don't even get me started on if you have an emergency, they charge a $100+ walk-in fee. We won't be coming back. read more

I took my dog to this vet because it was highly recommended. The girl who answered the phone was kind and helped me schedule and appointment right away. She also told me what steps they would take with my dog to check what was wrong. We went in they did what was said they would do I even got a call from doctor lei which was Awsome! She told me he would need a check up in a week. Well I brought him in and same thing they called and told me what was going to be done a check up. He went in one week later they did a bunch of unnecessary things with my dog that was not needed according to the doctors conversation with me and then charged me. I spoke with the head lady in the front asking why these things where done after what the doctor said she was rude and told me I have issues and that she is a boss and that I was uneducated and she was saying how she has all these degrees which by the way in no means even pertains to her type of work or animals. I kindly asked her to please speak with the doctor and she kept telling me that she is unavailable and then told me my dog was band from seeing this doctor.... This was by far the most unprofessional experience I have ever had and my dog poor baby well he made it but not with there help. Oh well I believe karma will come around. read more

Dr Lei has been great to all of my animals. Her staff has always been very friendly to me. One day while I was making an appt for another pet, I had mentioned to the receptionist that one of the cats that came in frequently and was on home palliative care for end of life kidney failure, passed away. Just a few weeks after having to put down her best friend that she was with her whole life. Dr. Lei has been our vet for well over a decade. She genuinely cares about her patients. From kitty/puppyhood till when I had to say goodbye to my best friend and euthanize. She has provided the best care for my fur-babies. Her staff are professional, friendly and gentle with my pets. Always smiling and understanding. I never feel silly for asking questions or feel rushed. I don't think I've ever called a veterinary office a "relaxing place" but the office is bright, open and clean. It's such a pleasant place. Well Hawaii has a funny thing. I have noticed some businesses like to upcharge without telling you folks. After they quote you? Having a service dog that went through major surgery at a cost of 8K. I have had a better experience buying a car. Marylin Hata who you will never see is the General manager. Be aware she will appear only if you question cost or have a complaint. Then she will demand additional charges for procedures you never approved. Without even asking your consent or even if you don't have the money to pay for it. The problem I have an issue with is doing this why my service dog was under anesthesia. She only needed one x ray they did two without even asking why I was in the waiting room??? charging an extra $190.00 no consent and they only did ONE X-RAY prior to her major surgery. Now after they want two fine ask first and get consent. Why two? I believe we know why. People check your vet bills thoroughly and very carefully. They triple book on your appointment times making you wait up to hour or more in lobby. Then they forget to buckle the backboard your service dog goes onto while under anesthesia. Hmmmm sound right to you??? I could say more but you get it. Is this what I fought for my Country for? Then if she does not like your argument confronting up charges, she yells call the police. Took 4 year old Maltese mix for a dental consult on 12/4/2020. Assessment revealed mild Tarter. On 1/4/2021, arrived at 7:45 am for the 8:00 am appointment for teeth cleaning. I was allowed entrance to the building @8:10 am. A deposit of $350 was required prior to appointment. An estimated cost of the procedure was in excess of $450. I questioned the estimate since my dog is young and teeth extraction was not mentioned at the consult. I addressed this issue with the billing office staff explaining that teeth extraction was not mentioned. She agreed the estimate would be adjusted. I requested to talk to the vet, Lei Imaimo-Hata before the procedure because I wanted to address the necessity of a lumpectomy addressed at the initial consultation. I was advised an additional fee would be added to my bill for the consult. Having already discussed this with the vet on 12/4/2020, I declined the procedure. Returning later in the afternoon to retrieve my dog, the vet, Lei Imaino- Hata , informed me 6 bottom teeth were extracted from my 4 year old dog insisting the teeth were loose. I was stunned since this was not addressed in the consult nor was I informed prior to the extraction. The billing clerk asked for my credit card to reverse the deposit since it was entered incorrectly. She needed my receipt to perform the reversal. I was lucky to still have it with me. She then charged me $485.13 for the procedure! I was not provided information of what foods to give my dog during recovery and the remainder of his life since he has no bottom teeth to chew. I had to ask for medication since it was not provided by the vet nor the assistant. My credit card did not reflect the reverse of the deposit on my credit card. I called the office the following day requesting the reversal be addressed. I was informed by the clerk to call my bank. I did. The bank informed me if a reversal was done correctly it would reflect immediately on my card statement. I also ask for advise on food. She told me there was soft food I could buy at there. I asked for an alternative since my dog would not eat his normal wet science diet. She did not give needed alternatives. I was completely devastated by their inappropriate billing practices and most of all proceeding with extraction of 6 teeth without an attempt to contact me prior to removal since this was not addressed as needed during the consult. Beware dealing with this veterinary service. Hopefully my dog will live another 10 years but his quality of life is altered! read more

I initially took one of my sick dogs to this clinic and was impressed with the knowledge and efficiency of the staff. I took another of my dogs there and was equally impressed with the service. But. . . . . the 2nd dog was diagnosed with a terminal illness and I proceeded to provide recommended care to him until it was time to have him put to rest. I called this clinic and asked what it it would cost to have him euthanized. Wow, what a shock. They added in all kinds of charges for exam, walk-in fees, drug charges and a bunch of other crap, all totaling up to more than $400. That did not even include cremation which was around $375. All total they quoted me over $800 to put my beloved dog to rest. I had already called another veterinarian which had also seen my dogs previously. They quoted me at around $420, which included the cremation. Needless to say the other clinic performed the procedure and the final cost was $455. I cannot believe the audacity of this place. Obviously they think when people are at their lowest, dealing with the grief of losing a beloved pet, they think they can bilk them out of a bunch of money. So much for caring about pets, as the bottom line is making lots of money. This place is crap and I will never ever set foot in their clinic and I will totally try to bad mouth them every chance I get! read more

Dr. Lei is not just compassionate about her job she is simply amazing! Our dog was really sick and our regular vet couldn't see her, I called around and they could see her the next day! From the moment I met Dr. Lei I could see her genuine heart for animals. She diagnosed our dog who had severe pancreatitis, came up with a treatment plan and options for us. She was very upfront and told us it was bad but we could try the treatment. We did for almost a week but unfortunately our dog didn't make it. I called the office to cancel our upcoming appointment! First of all. I just want to say that I do not understand how this company has four stars. This is a five-star vet and I will explain why. My pup was referred to Dr. Lei because he was out of town on a trip, and my pup needed emergency care. They were so nice from the first phone call and conversation. They took me on the same day, within an hour! It was really busy that day when I went because of multiple emergencies, so I thought oh my goodness, they're going to be flustered and impatient and make me feel even worse than I already do. Nope. With the hustling and rustling around the office, the staff was patient, kind, and so supportive. Laughing and smiling despite multiple customers coming in and out (6 ft social distancing in place and lots of chair room for space). Dr. Lei was so sweet and understanding and listened to all of my concerns despite the number of patients she had yet to see. I struggle with anxiety so I did have lots of questions and she answered them thoroughly and even made me laugh. The staff, the nurses, the vet techs were all so sweet to my pup (and to me). They really made me feel supported and cared for. My pup healed from that emergency, and just a couple of days later he had an injury on his leg that I had to take him into emergency after hours which I felt absolutely horrible for. I thought, okay, this is where I'm going to see the short personality with the staff and Dr. because that's what usually always happens to me with other businesses. Honestly, they were nicer. More understanding which is something I've never experienced before. Our pup has become me and my partner's family and they treated me and my pup like we were family too. (Mind you, we aren't currently her patients - but will be). She was comforting me and really truly kind and patient despite what time it was. They do not know how much their kindness meant to me. I've been going through a lot recently and she truly changed my entire week and calmed the panic attack that I was going through. Thank you, Dr. Lei, and every single person on their staff.
