I've only had two visits to Aloha Veterinary Center, but I must say that I've been very impressed with Dr Matsumoto and Dr. Beth. Both doctors patiently listened to any questions/concerns I had. Everyone, from front desk staff to vet techs are friendly and welcoming. I also appreciate the fact that they are open 6 days a week (8 am to 6 pm) with emergency services on Saturday from 12-4, which shows that Aloha Veterinary Center is making an effort to fulfill veterinary care in the community. read more

I called because my dog was expelling blood and vomiting. They told me to come in at 1PM that day. Because it was an emergency I would have to pay $225 up front which I did. Then I waited a half hour before a vet tech. came and said she was taking the dog to have a "fecal Smear'". I told her I would like to speak with the veterinarian. She brought my dog back.. Ask if they could get a blood test to maybe rule out pancreatic problem. By now it was nearing 2 PM. I told her I did not think it was pancreatic. My dog showed no symptoms of pain. and , of course, by this time I am beginning to think they just want to run up my bill. I never got to see the vet. and I ended up paying $78 for a fecal smear WOW! Her temp was 101.3 per the tech This experience is so different from the experience I had with Dr Matsumoto. Last October my other dog had an intestinal package. He took an X-ray discussed it with me and with in the hour he operated. He was wonderful! We discussed options and my dog is alive because of him. read more

I've been taking my fur-keiki to Aloha Veterinary Center in Hilo, and I honestly couldn't ask for a better experience. Dr. Lyons is incredibly sweet and supportive--she always puts us at ease during visits. The vet tech is amazing too; they never forget us and always greet us like old friends. One of the best decisions I made was establishing care early on. It's the peace of mind knowing that when something comes up, we already had a trusted team ready to go. The location and the parking lot has easy access too. There's no 24/7 vet care on the Big Island, which is something I wish we had, but knowing I have a solid daytime team ready to go makes a huge difference. read more

We've been there for routine work, and they were fine. I then called, after my dog had been attacked and biten by another dog, and they offered me an appointment 2 weeks out. I said I didn't think his conditon was an emergency but he did need some immedate treatmen for puncture wounds. They asked if I wanted an emergency appointment? I asked them to explain the "emergency appt" and found they wanted $250 to see the dog today. I found another vet, they say him same day, treated him and gave him antibiotics for $179 read more

Dr. Sabina is an absolute gem; she is so sweet, and gentle, and loving with our cats, she is always willing to talk to you and explain the situation in all the detail you might want, and she is just an all around pleasure to deal with. We're leaving the island soon to move back to the mainland, and of all the things we're glad to leave behind here, we are really bummed to leave Dr. Sabina...she's quite possibly the best vet I've ever had in 20+ years of owning/caring for cats. Otherwise, the staff up front has always been nice and fairly prompt. I absolutely unreservedly recommend this veterinary clinic. read more

Dr. Sabina bumped our babies appt because they "booked" an emergency appointment at our appointment time. Told us we would have a long wait until she had the time to see our baby, or leave him there alone in pain and afraid! Emergencies are seen IN BETWEEN booked appointments. Our baby can not walk, he cries all the time, he even screams when he tries to walk. Now she is refusing to give me his blood work results that I paid for. Totally unprofessional! Dr. Rodrigues must be rolling in his grave! His practice went down hill fast! Just found out Dr. Sabina used to work for Hilo's rude vet that everyone knows about. This explains a lot! read more

Without Dr. Matsumoto's knowledge, we would have continued to be misdiagnosed by another vet & would have lost our (then) kitten, who has had the opportunity to grow into a handsome cat because of the care & recommendations we received at Aloha Vet. Hate this vet. It was good when Rodrigues was here, R.I.P. Nurses are nice but I hate the vet. Because of him my baby is no longer here. I had to take him here since my normal vet, Kīlauea, was closed. Kīlauea is the absolute best vet ever. The vet didn't care, obviously didn't want to answer my questions and made me and my dog feel like a burden after paying him over $9,000. Luckily I have the number to one of the nurses at Kīlauea because she's the only one who answered my questions and actually told me what to do. They sent me dog home after an extreme surgery when he should have been hospitalized. They told me he can eat whatever dog food when he was supposed to be on a soft bland diet. Didn't tell me anything about how much he can move. Said his stitches ripped internally and he got sepsis yet the food that was stuck in him was the food he ate right after his first surgery and hadn't eaten again at all. Did he rip his stitches or did you not stitch him correctly???? He was getting poisoned the entire time after his $3000 surgery and died 4 hours after his $6000 surgery. Didn't even get an apology. I will forever hate this vet for taking away my whole entire world. My aunty also had a horrible experience with this vet. Took him for surgery and he stayed over night and passed away. Nobody called her. She called around lunch asking about him and they told her he was dead. He died in the night and nobody had the decency to tell her. Worst vet EVER. read more

Awful experience. the vet there went on Facebook and was very abusive towards me when I asked if our animal sanctuary could have a small volume discount. I spend about $25,000 a year on vet bills for the animals that we rescue. all he had to do was say, sorry, no we can't do that. instead he claims that he knows me personally and therefore felt that I could afford it all. we have never met. if you don't want to be attacked on Facebook don't inquire about their services. such a lack of professionalism. read more

Very friendly staff. We were on vacation and found a very sick kitten in need of care. They put me in touch with animal control and were able to fit us in. Momma cat is getting spayed and hopefully we can coordinate getting her sent to the mainland. Can't say too much about the care because it was a brief encounter but the front desk and techs were very nice as was the doctor. read more

My senior dog took a 10' fall Saturday early morning. We called our regular vet and never got a call back. We had taken Buster to Aloha Veterinary Center once before so we called and before they opened they called back and took Buster in right away. Dr. Sabina was very kind and knowledgeable. The staff were extremely kind and helpful throughout the day. Unfortunately Buster succumbed to his injuries. Staff was on hand to answer our questions while we cared for Buster at home. Not happy with The doctor or the assistant No compassion and made us wait way to long before returning to the room ! Did not look at my kittens ears or even check for fleas ! I felt uncomfortable with the outcome being that my kitten was rescued with many underlying conditions I know that people donate medicine for cases like this ! They frowned when I asked if they could help in any way ! I should of taken her to Pāhoa Vet! I where they have the compassion and help with anything that they can ! It's sad that we are forced to go to the veterinary clinic do to everything being pulled off the shelves recently at All feed stores so we can't treat our animals at home ! We are basically forced to deal high priced clinics like them :-( The only reason I went there is that my friend who found the kitten in the middle of the road goes to them and they had a opening ! Last time I had to wait 2 hours (two hours!) even I made an appointment weeks ago. The lady in the reception is not nice, she was saying that everybody has been waiting for 2 hours as if it would be a normal thing. Previous time I waited for over 1 hour and a half. It seems is a recurring problem, they overbook or are too slow but is always happening. The vet is a gamble, some are good and some are not. Last one was not good. Won't be back. read more

This is by far the worst vet clinic we have ever encountered. Our Daughter's dog went into respiratory distress over the weekend. He needed help ASAP. Aloha Vet was still several hours before closing. We called and asked if we could bring him in. After all, he was a patient there. We were told the vet was in surgery and had appointments for the rest of the day. The lady who answered the phone gave us some other options. All of which were closed. We pleaded for them to see him as he was suffering. The lady who answered went to ask the staff and we were told they were too busy. Our daughter drove him all the way to Kona to see the closest vet that was open and willing to see him by fitting him in. He passed away that day. He had an appointment with Aloha Vet the following Monday but he needed immediate help. I completely understand being busy. All clinics are busy. But just like people, pets don't get sick by appt only. Emergencies arise and as a veterinary clinic, Aloha Vet chooses to provide medical care for animals. Wouldn't that include patients having an emergency during regular business hours? Did they have every right to turn him away? I guess so BUT a good vet clinic, one who truly cares, one you can trust, and is committed would be flexible. In our experience, we have encountered more than once where we were told that a critical patient came in so they were running behind. That has always been completely acceptable. Maybe the staff would have gotten out late that day to save a life or help a suffering patient over the bridge. But isn't that what they're in business to do? To care for your pets? We have never encountered such a cold hearted clinic. They simply do not care. If you can't trust them in an emergency, do you really want to trust them to provide reliable routine services? Do you want to be able to depend on your clinic for your vet care needs? If so, this doesn't appear to be that clinic. read more

I would give this place 5 stars if you only see Dr Alana,she is from Boston and knows how to practice real live western medicine when it comes to your pet. I had to take my dog there twice, the first vet put super glue on my dogs wound and have gave me an antibiotic and charged me almost $200. When I got home the wound was open again (shocking) and when I called them back they said to put honey on it,wtf, he's just gonna lick it off. So by the 3rd day I called and said we need to come in bc I'm afraid of an infection, thank God for Dr Alana, she stitched him up gave him a shot of real antibiotics and know he's fine Seriously if you live here it's like a 3rd world country if you need any type of Dr. I love Hawaii for a vacation but it's impossible to live here, unless your a recluse. read more

Every single time we come here whether it be for an appointment for our fur baby or just simply to pick up food for our fur babies, we are NEVER greeted, EVER. Hilo is such a tight community and to not greet you when you enter a business, especially nowadays, is poor customer service. Our doggie is on a special diet and I hate coming in here to pick up his food because not only do we have to wait for god knows how long we are always not even recognized until the staff is ready. Don't these people know how to say, "Hi!" It never used to be like this because we've been coming here for years. Maybe different staff?? It's interesting that they have this sign on their counter that says, "Aloha spirit required here, if you can't share it today, please visit us some other time." Aloha spirit goes both ways, if your going to require it then maybe you should also show it. We so need to find a new vet already! So frustrating! read more

Could you be on hold because they are busy? Definitely. Do they charge a fee for the vet to see your animal? Yes, what vets don't charge a fee to see your pets? $37.50 is about half what we paid at our past vet. Does the driveway have pot holes? It sure does, and sometimes there is a leak in the waiting room, my opinion, I would rather not have to pay for a fancy office, again, we have found this vet to be very reasonably priced. Once considered a great Veterinarian Clinic the wheels have now fell off. First Dr. Rodrigues passed away, he was the owner. Now it seems they cannot retain Doctors and they currently have none. We came in primarily to get a stray kitten we had found checked out. First impression of the place was that it was busy. Extremely busy. Although we had an appointment we still had to wait about thirty minutes for a visit that lasted only about five. They took a fecal sample and after ten minutes of more waiting we got the results back. The kitten had round worm. The vet quickly prescribed the right medicine and instructed us how to apply. Everyone was nice and even with the wait I didn't feel slighted. As a whole we got our dog and new kitten checked up, had two fecal tests done, and received antibiotics and round worm medication for the cat. The grand total was $200. I have no idea if that is good or not so I'll let you be the judge. Place could've been cleaner, wait faster, and vet a little more friendly so I rate this as an average place for average run-of-the-mill pet owners. read more

No call was received for two hours so I finally called back the answering service told us that the doctor was not going to call us back - mind you this was after they took our payment - and I wouldn't have known until I called them back because they don't call patients back with doctor messages cause its not in their contract.
