It's difficult for me to share negative experiences because I prefer to give establishments the benefit of the doubt, but after numerous misdiagnoses and a particularly upsetting event, I felt it might be helpful to share to shed light on the type of service others may experience too. Dr. Lyons is very kind and friendly which is why it's disappointing that on two occasions my pets were misdiagnosed. One of my dogs was acting strangely, yelping in pain randomly and limping with her back leg. I ordered X-rays and took her in numerous times and their response was that she is scared and probably sprained her leg. She was prescribed pain meds and CBD. I visited a new vet to get a second opinion because their treatment wasn't working and sure enough, her random yelping and limping was due to the pain her nerves were experiencing from arthritis found in her hip and knee. It breaks my heart knowing she had to suffer all that time until we got the proper treatment. On another occasion, my dog had what looked like something stuck in his eye. They quickly dismissed it as being nothing serious and said it's probably just irritated, use these drops. I had a feeling that it wasn't the case and took my dog to another vet to get a second opinion. She used a special drop that highlighted his eye and showed me that it was in fact an ulcer in his eye. She gave me the proper eye drops to help it go away. And last but not least, I took my dogs in for their annual the other year and asked them to please check their teeth if I need to do anything. They said it was fine and looked great, but when I took them again later that year they said their teeth were horrible and needed extractions. I was confused, but said okay and not only did they not call to get permission to remove as much teeth as they did, when I went to pick up my dog, they didn't walk me through what they found or what happened and the nurse not only told me how bad some of their teeth were, she also took photos and sent it to other people on a text thread which she showed me and I was able to see the messages between all of them criticizing myself and my dog. This was extremely upsetting for me considering I had asked them specifically if there was anything I needed to do for their teeth and they said no, then to go through the steps to make sure they are okay, only to be criticized in the end and shown a lack of privacy and respect for myself and my pet. It felt like a total violation and it was in that moment that I decided to switch vets despite being loyal all those years. Our pets are like family, and when they are treated without proper care it can feel extremely frustrating. I hope things get better for them because the potential is there and many of the staff members are friendly and genuinely care about animals.

There was no pressure or encouragement at all to jump into more aggressive treatment. Dr Zach was friendly and thoughtful and gave us all the time we needed to ask questions. Overall the price was acceptable for the exam and vaccinations. The groomer cut one of my dog's nails too close to the quick/vein, causing it to bleed, and also dremeled/filed the tops of multiple areas on his paws, which were also bleeding quite a bit. He was noticeably in pain afterward, which was extremely concerning as a pet owner. I understand accidents can happen, but cutting into the quick and over-dremeling multiple areas of his paws is not something I consider acceptable for a routine nail trim. I'm especially disappointed because I've used this service before without issues. I hope the grooming team takes greater care to prevent this from happening to another pet, especially as my poor baby is in pain!!

I'd give them 10 stars if I could. At 8pm, after normal hours, we called the number and Dr Valentina Poggi answered immediately. Our dog had gotten a stick jammed in her mouth and it ripped a nasty hole in her tongue and was bleeding badly. In spite of being 1.5 hours away from us, Dr Poggi said "I'll see you at 9:30." We rushed over, and Dr Poggi and a vet tech were waiting. They immediately took our dog, who needed to be sedated, and then her tongue stitched. It is very clear these folks genuinely care about animals. They did a great job, and the best part is, the fee was very reasonable. Dr. Poggi even called the following morning to check up and see how our pup was doing. While we love our vet on our side of the island, unfortunately they don't do after hours care, which as we all know, is sometimes needed. If we ever have an after hours vet need, we would absolutely drive across the island again to see Dr Poggi. Our only regret is we don't live closer because this would be our main vet if we did. We found the place to be clean, well run, and they have everything they needed to care for our girl, and all the meds we needed were there as well. So if you're reading this, and you see some older bad reviews, I'd like to remind you that those vets likely don't work there anymore, and our experience was nothing but positive in every single way. Unfortunately, after our dogs illness that happened last week and the lack of care or support, I need to write this review. I am offering this as a cautionary tale; Dr. Jackie use to be on top of her game. However, since her unfortunate accident, and a loss of someone close to her, and a recent emergency call to her on a Sunday afternoon, I write this. After the last visit to Jackie, and a dose of two powerful drugs into our five pound Chihuahua; Mochi began to have diarrhea two days later. We ignored the symptoms until we noticed, she stopped eating, and by Saturday, began to vomit. On Sunday, we called Alii Vet Hospital. Mochi has been a client for over a year now. Dr. Pickerell returned our call from an exciting boat trip whale watching. Rather than refer us to another clinic, she suggested we give our dog pepto-Bismal. This made our dog throw up and by Monday, she was lethargic. Concerned, we called back, left a voicemail and waited for a return call from Aina Ahou; no one called. Dr. Jackie called in sick on Monday, and no one returned our call about our near death, beloved Mochi. Fortunately, we made contact with a hospital in Kona and rushed Mochi there to Alii Vet Hospital. We are sad by the lack of care or concern from Dr. Jackie and her staff; we hold everyone there responsible. Mochi is still; a week in the hospital recovering from her diagnosis of a serious life threatening illness. We wish Jackie well, and that she gets the emotional support needed. All things happen for a reason. Our Mochi is in good hands now, in Kona at Alii Vet Hospital, available 24/7 as an emmergency hospital. Me ke aloha.

Mochi had a gastrointestinal disorder and she had four days of diarrhea and could not eat or keep anything down. Thanks to Alii we were able to admit her to the hospital and they gave her an IV drip of antibiotics and nutritional support as well as water for dehydration.
