Wow! I loved my dinner at Alma. It's a weird to start this off but the thing that stood out to me the most at Alma, was the SERVICE! Everyone who works there is really attentive, respectful, humorous, and super knowledgeable! The service here was better than some 3 michelin star restaurants I've been to. It's a small-medium size space so reservations are strongly recommended. My favorite was the pork skin dish, I could have had a few more pieces of that. They ended the night with many pots of tea. Highly Recommend! read more

Although Michelin purports to base ratings only on Food, Alma fails entirely in terms of customer service. Long story short, I had a confirmed reservation for Sunday 09/05/21 at 19h00. I arrived ten minutes early to find the restaurant dark. No email. No phone call. Even the website suggesting they were open. The only suggestion that Sundays were now closed found on Google Maps. Attempts to re-schedule for another day failed as e-mails and calls go unanswered. And even more egregiously, after emailing them they changed the website to list: Monday to Saturday, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm and from 7:00pm to 10:30pm. Yet in the paragraph directly above "Alma is closed on Mondays." They've yet to apologize. read more

Really great experience! I got the classic tasting menu and my partner got the seasonal. Both were really great with unique dishes and we left filled after 3.5 hours. I was recently in Lisbon for my birthday and when we saw there was a two star Michelin with my same name, I knew I had found where to celebrate! ;) Alma definitely lived up to it's two stars -from the impeccable service, the lovely ambiance and the stellar food- it didn't disappoint in any way. I won't go through the tasting menu dish by dish as the menu is seasonal so your menu will vary. However, the highlights for me were definitely the salted cod w bread, the seared foie gras and surprisingly the glazed carrots w bulgur. The entire menu was delicious though and I loved that the Portuguese flavors shined through, even though there is definitely a distinct classically trained flare to the food. HIGHLY recommend you try Alma if you're looking for a fine dining experience in Lisbon. read more

Embarking on a 7-course culinary voyage paired with exquisite wines was a treat for the senses. The overall experience was undeniably wonderful, with the amuse-bouche offerings leaving a lasting impression - their "amuse abuse" was a true delight, showcasing the chef's creativity. While the wine pairing was enjoyable, I'm considering opting out next time to fully savor the flavors of the courses. Why? Because I was buzzed by the third drink. Alma's experience is a good experience for any food enthusiast seeking gastronomic adventure. read more

Fantastic meal. We had the costa costa tasting. Food is inventive but not gimmicky, artfully presented, and most importantly, cooked perfectly and delicious. Room is beautiful and the service impeccable. Highlights were the shrimp, monkfish/lobster and hake, though everything was pretty great. I recently ate at Le Bernadin and would put this meal in same category. Perhaps the only complaint is fatigue by the end. 2 'surprises' followed by 3 amuses before bread and the first official course even arrive. It's a lot of food, so be prepared. read more

I wanted to love Alma so much. Recently received their 2nd star so I was expecting a lot. There are some things they did perfectly, some they did well and some that fell off the mark. I can't recall every single dish I had to fully critique but here are some highlights. - We ordered from the tasting menu. One was the traditional Alma and the other was focused on seafood. - The pre-meal moments were good and fun. Especially the red pepper fry - Some is the fish dishes left me unsatisfied. Not because they weren't good. But because they weren't great. - There were dishes we saw served at the other table that looked fantastic but it was not part of our tasting menu. Perhaps, we should have gotten the a la carte... - The servers were fantastic and very friendly. A+ all around. - Smoked butter was insanely good. I would recommend any one who loves fine dining try Alma. read more

The best restaurant ever. We made the reservation about 4 months in advance and had contemplated canceling for fear that it wouldn't live up to the hype. We are so glad we didn't cancel. When you arrive, you have to ring the bell/knock and someone will come greet you at the door and take you right to your table. When you're sat, you're immediately greeted by the waitstaff. If you want to drink, they have someone there who will help you pick a drink depending on your wants/likes. At other restaurants when waitstaff provide drink recommendations, it's usually the most expensive, however, the waiters recommendations at Alma were brutally honest and, surprisingly, not the most expensive. After getting drinks, they explain the menu to you -- you can either da a la carte or you can do the tasting menu, but they that everyone at the table orders from the same menu (for example, if you get the a la carte menu, everyone at the table should get the a la carte menu, not the tasting menu). There are two tasting menus. We chose to do the tasting menu and we each got a different tasting menu. It was the best decision. They bring the food out to you dish by dish -- once you finish a dish, they bring another, and so on. When they bring you a dish, they explain what the dish is and how to eat it. Each dish is about 2-4 bites. We initially thought at the beginning that we wouldn't be full after, but, about 15 dishes later and we were stuffed. The tasting menu consisted of things that I would have never ordered on my own but they were all so good. There was not a single bad dish. You could also see the chef cooking which was very cool and the waitstaff are incredible and very attentive. It's pretty quiet and relatively small and intimate and a perfect date spot. It's worth the splurge -- you'll never find anything else like it. read more

The chefs of Belcanto and Alma are apparently rivals so I'm going to fan the flames of this rivalry by saying this: Alma is better in almost every way (service, pricing, all food except the dessert). You are greeted by an extremely friendly host, and the first thing you see as you walk in is the classy modern interior. Not too dark, not too bright, interesting modern decor such as a large glass mirror and bottles of alcohol in a mildly industrial interior. As you sit, the hosts move all the chairs out in unison and place your utensils in front of you in unison, like figure skaters or ballet dancers. The service is overall incredible and they were very accommodating towards dietary restrictions (one of us doesn't eat pork). The food is wild, as expected from a tasting menu that has earned 2 Michelin stars. We had all sorts of infusions, foam, charcoal products, but also some superbly cooked fish and meats that melted in the mouth. Every item on the meal was enjoyed by everyone at the table. In aggregate, we ordered both the classic "Alma" and the new "Costa a costa" courses, and both were equally enjoyed. read more

A small, tastefully constructed space with rough hewn stone floors juxtaposed with sleek, modern natural wood finishes. We each ordered the Prix Fixe menus, one was "mar" and the other "terra.". We often order this way to allow the chef to showcase his/her talents. We were not disappointed. We thought we were getting an eight course dinner. Which is plenty. However, by the time all of the "surprise" plates, "surprise, surprise" plates, amuse bouche, intermezzo and "surprise" dessert dessert courses were served, we ended gorging on something like sixteen courses! It was incredible both in the ranges of textures, flavor profiles and visually stunning presentations. Well deserved Michelin Two Star designation. The wait staff team was flawless, but also kept it light fun and relaxed. Truly a wonderful experience. read more

Beautiful meal. Flawless flavors. And best of all, the staff took such care with my daughter's severe pistachio and cashew allergies.

Had the whole experience for lunchtime. The serving staff is very responsive to questions about the food, and took time to explain and even show us the fish. We had the tasting menu but one had coast to coast, the other had classic. Even the classic had several fish dishes. It is a bliss for seafood/fish lovers. I'm always interested in perfect and interesting take on "common" food material, e.g. this codfish dish is half cured so it has layers of textures from cooked to raw in one bite. read more

Loved the food here. We got the Costa a Costa tasting menu and thought it was overall very good. The restaurant definitely deserves the two Michelin stars, and we found the staff to be quite friendly and helpful. We liked the atmosphere of the restaurant at lunch because it was not quite as formal as a dinner time experience. The entire experience lasted for about two and a half hours with many surprises at the beginning of the meal. The Turbot and Scarlet Shrimp were some of the highlights of the meal. All the fish was extremely fresh and nicely prepared. In comparison to Bel Canto, I found Alma to be much better and would definitely visit again next time I am in Lisbon. Update: While writing my review, I noticed that the staff forgot to give us one of the courses on the menu. I emailed the restaurant to confirm this was the case, and it took a week for a response. I am extremely disappointed that the staff forgot a course, and I find the situation extremely unprofessional. read more

In the vein of a skeleton prompt yelp wants you to write, when you walk past this place, you probably can't pop in, even if you're dying of hunger. But, hopefully you've made a reservation, because I don't think you'll be disappointed. 2 Stars, maybe the ability to flirt with a third. The indoor is expanse with really what I can only describe as beautiful and sturdy dining tables and chairs. The cocktails and mocktails were fantastic, the small plates that arrived with the bread service (and the bread itself) are things I still think about, 3 months later. The Scarlett shrimp and carrots were a great escalation in food quantity and taste. The suckling pig and cobblestreet salted were presented beautifully and tasted delicious. Lastly, I'm not a chocolate person (but my dining partner is) and I think I understand why people love chocolate after eating chocolate bomb. The presentation, different flavors and textures of chocolate--I'd come again just for this. The service was fantastic. What was nice (at least at the time of dining), the lunch and dinner menu was the same and you can order similar things off the tasting menu, a la carte read more

We overall had a great meal here. The location is excellent and the service was amazing. Extensive wine list with a great pairing with everything when we asked for wine recommendations. All the appertizers were delicious and the pork in particular was amazing. The dessert was amazing too. However I found the tuna a bit on the heavier side, and a bit bland in my opinion. That being said we thoroughly enjoyed our meal from start to finish. Definitely worth a visit if your'e looking for a great meal out in Lisbon. read more

First off, this is probably the best meal I have ever had. Hands down. Everything here was perfect from start to end! We had a reservation at 10 PM on a Thursday but they called me earlier and said they have a 9 PM opening and that we can have it if we want. Of course we said yes. We arrived around 8:30 and were seated right away. The sommelier came up to us right away and presented the wine list. We do not drink wine, so we asked for the drinks instead. They asked about what kind of drinks we liked and they created us some custom drinks based on our tastes! I thought that was a great touch. We chose the Alma tasting menu. The tasting menu was preceded by 3 amuse bouche rounds. After that, we got some bread and butter. Following that was the entree courses and dessert. We tired a lot of different dishes, all representing Portugal in some way. My favorite was the foie gras. It was AMAZING. Best dish I have ever had in my life. I was speechless after I took the first bite! I wanted to order another one but didn't want to go too overboard lol. After dessert, they surprised me with a chocolate cake with a candle on top since we came here for my birthday celebration. It was super rich and had some crunch to it. After dessert, they had some petit fours to finish it off. By this time, we were both so full that we couldn't move. For the value, you get a lot. A 2 Michelin star restaurant in the states, you are looking at $200-300 per personal, easily. Here, it was 110 euro each, so I thought it was a steal. Overall, amazing experience. Thanks to our waiter for being awesome and making it a memorable experience. The foie gras I had will forever hold a place in my heart. read more

This was my family's first Michelin experience and it turned out to be the highlight of our time in Lisbon. My dad was skeptical at first, even going so far as to say we should just skip our reservations, but now he can't stop talking about it. As other reviews suggested, we got both the Alma and Costa a Costa menus. Alma - Many reviews stated that this was more creamy, but we found it to be the opposite. The best dish was the suckling pig confit which was melt-in-your-mouth tender but also very crispy. I also really enjoyed the basil sorbet and blackberry textures. Costa a Costa - With a seafood focus, I was hoping this would be a lighter fare, but they were more heavy handed with the cream than I was expecting, from the hollandaise to the fennel puree and prawn rice. Everything was cooked to perfection, however, and it was still a great experience. Both the desserts here are super tart (passionfruit and yuzu) to help cut the lingering seafood taste. Service was impeccable and like a well-coordinated dance. Nothing came too early and we were never left waiting for another dish. My mom especially adored the plating with each dish on a different plate that complimented the food. As good as the tasting courses were, we all agreed that our favorite bites were actually the "surprises" (amuse bouche) of which there were FIVE before the meal, bread service, and a trio of dessert. We were already well on our way to being full before the meal even started! There was such a variety of flavors that the tasting menu didn't quite follow through on. Overall, there were a few shortcomings, but all are easily overlooked by the experience as a whole and I'd still highly recommend it. read more

My fiancé and I recently visited Portugal for the first time and booked Alma a month in advance for dinner during our first night - and we were completely blown away. The food, service, and overall experience matches and surpasses those of NYC's finest two- and three-starred Michelins that we have visited prior. I honestly can't rave enough about Alma. Upon being seated, we were welcomed by the somm and our two friendly servers for the night. We ordered the 5-course tasting menus and got both the Alma and Costa a Costa to try a variety. Before the 5-courses even begun, we were presented with 5 small courses of snacks and amuse-bouches. These snacks were just as good as the main courses, if not some of the highlights of the dinner! My favorites of the starters were the perfectly cooked octopus, the extremely flavorful fish soup, and the delightfully refreshing gazpacho (deconstructed as a tomato sorbet). Each of the following courses, including the bread service, were all just as amazing. I had favorites in both the Alma and the Costa a Costa menus so I definitely recommend getting both. For Alma, the seared foie gras was one of the best renditions of the dish I had ever had and the suckling pig confit was incredible. The skin was so crispy that it would split apart from a poke of the fork, and the pepper jus it came with was so incredibly rich and complementary to the pork. For the Costa, the scarlett prawn rice was the most expertly cooked prawn ever - it was so tender and was topped off by a sauce made of its own shell and was just so incredibly flavorful. The dessert also blew me away. The crystallized algae (yes! seaweed in dessert!) was contrasted with a tart and sweet yuzu sorbet and creamy citrus custard dots along the beautifully crafted plate. At this point, we had already had so many courses and amazing dishes that I joked I wouldn't be mad if dessert (which had already included a "pre-dessert" and a main dessert) also included a "post-dessert." Just as I had said it - a tray of treats was presented, including macarons and the chef's interpretation of pasteis de nata. Overall, this was one of the best restaurants I've ever dined at! Every single course was beyond my expectations and felt like a culinary adventure laid out on an artistic plate. I can't wait to return to Portugal to make a trip back to Alma. Highly, highly recommended for anyone passing through Lisbon. read more

Ahhhhhmazing!!!! Literally had the best meal of my life here in Lisbon when we visited the fall of 2018. In the heart of Chiado neighborhood, Alma is a Michelin star establishment by Executive-chef, Henrique Sá Pessoa. It was difficult to get a dinner reservation about a month before our trip but we were fortunate to score a lunch reservation. For a fine dining Michelin star establishment, I thought it was reasonably priced. It's a steal compare to if you were to have the same meal in the U.S. Food was very tasty, well presented, and high quality. We opted for the tasting menu in which we had 11 or 12 courses (I can't remember). For those that know me, I am a very picky eater. At Alma, I ate every single item including oyster mayonnaise and the octopus which I never had before in my life because I am squeamish. I was blown away by each course! Some of the innovative courses had ingredients that I never imagined could go well infused together. So much flavor and different textures intertwined. My tastebuds were tickled. Service was top notched which is what is expected in a Michelin star restaurant. Everything was fantastic! Definitely worth it. When we dined at Alma, it was a single Michelin star back in 2018. I was so happy for them when I found out they earned an extra star the following year. They definitely earned it. I highly recommend you plan on having a meal here if you visit Lisbon. We were staying Lisbon last February and found this one Michelin star restaurant not too far away from us. We booked a weekday lunch and walked - glad we got there a bit early, as there was construction in the front and understated signage. The door opened at the exact time of our reservation to let us in and show us to our table. My brother ordered the five-course Costa a Costa menu, with inspired by the sea. I ordered the Alma tasting menu, with five of the Chef's favourite dishes. We both decided to get the wine pairing afterall. To start: - Puffed tapioca, oyster mayo, tomato, and basil gel - Red pepper tempura and cod with olive oil caviar - Shrimp crudo and raspberry powder - Scallop ceviche, crispy quinoa, and avocado Alma tasting menu: - Glazed baby carrots, goat cheese, dried fruit bulgur, and cumin oil - Seared foie gras, apple, granola, almond, and coffee foam - Roasted octopus, salsa, potato skins, capers, and smoked paprika - Suckling pig confit, sweet potato purée, bok choy, and orange glaze - Apple confit and basil sorbet - Caramelized Granny Smith apple tart with grapefruit and vanilla sorbet + Green tea and lemon with petit fours Had a great time and everything was delicious! The flavor of the roasted octopus was so so good, the orange glaze on the pork was perfect, and the dessert wasn't too sweet, which is more my preference. As a warning, the wine pairings are heavy pours, so you don't need to finish the glasses if you have a low tolerance :) Well worth the extra euros, and overall a more affordable Michelin restaurant meal. It seems more intimate here with good service and busy but not noisy. There were a few dates, special occasions, and splurgy business lunches. You could easily spend three hours here, socializing and savouring the food. Fun fact: Their toilet paper is black and scented! read more

2* Michelin restaurant in Lisbon. You can tell that they are proud of their accomplishment given the plaques and a few Michelin Giants you'll see in the restaurant. At first glance, the restaurant seems closed and you'll need to ring the bell for someone to open the door. Once inside, you'll be greeted by a beautiful wall of wines that help set the ambience of the atmosphere. The service was fantastic and the staff was very attentive. We tried both tasting meals, the Alma and Costa Costa, expecting to prefer the former given that they were the Chef's classics. However, although both were seafood forward, the Costa Costa had the slight edge. Both come with a few surprise dishes and amuse bouche as well as bread service. I feel that it's unnecessary to go through the entire menu as it is seasonal, but highlights were the glazed baby carrots (one of the best I've had), Portuguese Sole (the chorizo and hollandaise sauce gave it a hearty taste) and the Scarlett Prawn Rice (very intense prawn flavors). The only real miss of the night was the Suckling Pig confit. The pepper jus and jelly were too thick and sweet that overpowered the meat. Our favorite desserts of the night was the Sea flavors and citrus (the yuzu sorbet paired really well with the seaweed) and their take on a Portuguese Egg Tart (the shell is super crunchy and there's a flavor explosion on the inside). The only poor experience of the night was that the sommelier poured me a different wine that I had ordered. I didn't realize that until the bill came and was surprised to see that that the glass they poured was €25 instead of the €15 that I ordered. They did apologize, but did not offer to compensate for their mistake. Overall, I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fine dining, seafood forward experience in Lisbon. read more

Alma deserves all its Michelin stars. We were undecided between Belcanto and Alma and I believe we made the right decision coming here. Absolutely delicious food executed to the highest level. Service was attentive, warm and friendly. Prices are extremely reasonable for a 2-star Michelin restaurant. For perspective, my friends and I went to Quince, a 3-star Michelin restaurant a year ago and our meal for 3 was $2000. Our meal at Alma for 3 people was $800 and the food at Alma was more creative and delicious than Quince. read more

Here with family while traveling. Fantastic ambiance (loved the doorbell at the entrance) and excellent service. This place has excellent value compared to other Michelin 2 stars (at least in San Francisco). Before your tasting courses, you are given 2 snacks and 3 amuse la bouche. Unfortunately, some of those were way too salty for us but all the main courses were fine. We shared between the Alma menu and the Costa a Costa menu. Even though I'm not a seafood lover, I would recommended the Costa a costa (seafood) menu. The Alma menu is great but too heavy for my taste with loads of cream and high fat elements in big portions. TLDR: great restaurant for tasting, pick the seafood menu! read more

This was my first time dining at a two Michelin star restaurant, but we've eaten at quite a few one stars. What a difference between a one star - this was by far the best fine dining experience we've ever had. The experience starts by ringing a doorbell on a side street in downtown Lisbon. The hostess brings you into the entrance, and then into the gorgeous and warm restaurant. You're served by multiple people throughout the evening, and wow - the service was flawless. The servers didn't miss a beat, but weren't too overbearing, like at some fine dining restaurants. My husband and I chose the Alma tasting menu, rather than the Costa one - it just spoke to us more. The tasting menu includes five courses, but we received an additional five courses to start as "surprises" from the chef as well as bread service. I won't go through every single course, but one of our favourites were the red bell peppers in black tempura batter with this dreamy dipping sauce that goes beyond description. The octopus was also phenomenal. I also really appreciated the bread service, which is unusual at a fine dining restaurant like Alma. In terms of the actual tasting menu, the descriptions on the menu are sparse and don't do the food justice at all. I was surprised at my two favourite dishes - baby glazed carrots and the blackberry dessert. The carrots were just so bright and flavourful and everything on the plate worked. I can't even describe the blackberry dessert because there were so many different components, but there were so many textural and flavourful surprises. We didn't do the wine pairing - we started with a glass of sparkling wine, a bottle of red and then port with dessert. While this meal is certainly a splurge, I think you get absolutely fantastic value. If we're ever in Lisbon again, we would definitely go to Alma. read more

Michelin star-recognized restaurant with an air of exclusivity. Despite being in a frequently traveled neighborhood, Alma was a little difficult to find as it was hidden behind double doors and required you to ring a doorbell to enter. The dress code was "casual chic", which may mean different things to different people. While we were seated in shorts and a button up, we were told that we did not meet the dress code requirement and that the restaurant would allow us to dine anyways. I'd recommend wearing khakis or dressier pants (others were seated in t-shirts, but we were jeans so I was not sure if they had the same dress code issue). Once seated, the staff was very friendly and attentive. They provided an overview of each dish, had a sommelier provide excellent pairing recommendations, and answered any questions that we had about the dishes or wine. The food was very tasty and reasonably priced for the quality. The "chocolate bomb" dessert was fantastic. Dinner reservations seemed more difficult to come by and the restaurant is a bit small so try to book in advance or you may have more luck with a lunch reservation a few days before. The tasting menu takes time to prepare so if you are interested in the tasting menu, you should notify the restaurant in advance or arrive on the earlier side. read more

Being a first time visitor to Lisbon, I was impressed by the culinary ingenuity of Henrique Sá Pessoa and his team. It takes tremendous amount of experience and special skills to prepare and serve food that is as pleasing to the eye as to the taste buds. I had a memorable and enthralling time while dining at Alma. The positive experience has been seared in my mind and I can't wait to try other restaurants by the Chef. I chose the Coast to Coast, which is a 5-course, exclusively sea-inspired. The meal started out with the chef's five dishes in taking the most basic ingredients from the sea and bringing out the unique texture and flavors of each in the most elevated method. The restaurant appears historic and timeless situated in an unassuming, quiet street. The service was refined, yet the atmosphere relaxing. Alma may very well be on its way to getting their 3rd Michelin star. read more

Honestly incredible experience- staff was superb and everything about the experience was amazing. Heck, even the toilet paper was designer black and scented. The quality food you get for the price tag is insane. Highlights- beef was fantastic, perfectly salted and the artichoke/potato with purée sides were intricately flavored and balanced the texture of the beef well. The sourdough with the smoked butter was insane. It almost tasted like smoked salmon with a coastal hint but it was just butter- idk how they make it work but it's perfection. The egg tart reimagination dessert was also superb- great flavor and texture to end the meal. I'd say bread service is definitely worth it. I have been blessed being able to dine in multiple Michelin star establishments. My original thought was each has its own story, but to be honest they are starting to take on the same mechanics. Don't get me wrong most of the food is inventive, cutting edge and wonderful but there lacks a certain personal touch, or ambiance to make you want to return. Alma means "Soul", and I have some comments on that moniker. The dining area is modern and slick, but lacks warmth and welcoming. George V in Paris has an amazing dining area that draws you into a fairly tale setting. Alma had nothing on the dining table. No flowers, or other decorative items. The staff is well trained and very professional. They are knowledgeable about every angle of the dining experience, and took on a team approach to handling our service. Overall A. We ordered the tasting menu which overall was quite good, with wonderful extra tastings prepared by the chef. This is nice but not novel, and seemed mechanical like most Michelin star restaurants. Classic playbook. Do not get me wrong. The chef prepared a gazpacho sorbet that was to die for. The Foie Gras was heavenly, and there were many other amazing additional items. In the movie "The 100 step Journey" the protagonist after getting a second star for his local Michelin restaurant went to Paris to work for a third star. Innovation, Innovation was the beasts restaurant mantra. Hassan returned to his small village 2 star home because he found no soul in his cooking. Alma could use a little reflection and my bet is they find a different level of inspiration that has greater warmth and emotion. read more

The food was amazing and the service was attentive. We came during our stay in Lisbon and we ordered with the a la carte menu. We ordered 5 items between the two of us and we were very full at the end of our meal. Tasted: 1) bread service 2) seared foie gras 3) Portuguese sole 4) 'Cobblestreet' salted cod 5) John Dory 6) Portuguese beef fillet The items that stood out to me were the sole and the cobblestreeet salted cod. I absolutely loved the noisette hollandaise that was served with the sole, it was so creamy and delicious. The salted cod was also a memorable dish because the presentation was amazing and it was fun to mix the salted cod together with the egg yolk. Overall I thought this 2 star michelin restaurant had a great value. The price is not that much more than other 1 star michelin restaurants in Lisbon. I had an enjoyable meal here and I would recommend this restaurant. read more
