I went there to get a fill and pedicure yesterday. The only reason I come to this place is because of convenience; it is located a few steps away from my condo and they always have walk ins... no surprise there. Would give zero stars if I could due to horrible customer service, rudeness, the confrontational nail tech, sub par skill set and limited colors. I have been going here for about a year 6 months because they always have walk ins available (surprise surprise). During my visit yesterday, the nail tech gave me the most rushed, half ass pedicure. My toenails weren't even the same shape but I let it be. She wasn't friendly, and never spoke and so I was ok with getting it over with as well. She then told me to follow her to the nail station where she used a drill that was visually worn and raggedy. It was rough on my nail beds and so raggedy it was hard for her to use do she eventually changed it out. She proceeded to be rough never really asking about how I was feeling as the customer. She then asked me if I would like to change the set of acrylic nails completely instead of just getting a fill since they were old. I agreed. What took place after was completely unbelievable and UNACCEPTABLE. Instead of bringing a bowl of warm acetone and soaking the acrylic off, she took a spare nail and began prying and chipping the acrylic away from my real nails! When she got to my ring finger on the left hand I told her she was hurting me but she continued prying! I snatched my hand away and told her it feels like my ACTUAL NAIL IS RIPPING OFF THE NAIL BED and she attempted again while arguing with me. I couldn't understand the arguing. There was nothing to argue about. If I'm telling you that it hurts, just soak them off the correct way. I ended up telling her to just soak them off and to cancel any other service because I do not pay you to argue with me. Why would I pay to argue and to be abused? An older gentleman came to soak off my acrylic and I told him what happened. There was no response and he actually walked away while I was talking mid sentence. When I asked for the manager they all spoke to each other (obviously talking about me) then someone responded "that lady is the manager." I then went to pay with a woman that had done my nails many times. No apology, "just pay. " I don't understand how this place is in business with such piss poor customer service. Needless to say, I will not be returning. No one should waste their time or money at this sorry excuse for a nail salon. read more

I've had a few manicures here which have all been good enough to return, so today I went in for a pedicure. Not an ounce of exaggeration, I was in the chair for 10 minutes. It was insanely rush, no massage, maybe one or two swipes of the pumice stone on my heel. 10 minutes. For $33. She slapped the base coat, 2 coats of polish, and top coat on before one layer of polish could even dry. I was honestly in shock when she let me over to the dryer. I was willing to check this place out even after the screaming negative reviews (several people have bled during nail and cuticle cutting according to reviews!) because they allegedly were offering a coupon. The website had a link to print one. I thought it was a little weird that it printed blank with just Allure's web URL, but figured my browser was the problem. When I got to the salon the nail tech said they weren't doing coupons anymore-- I was very confused because of the misleading website and suggested they take the coupon promotion link off then. Of note, she didn't offer to use the promotion anyway (since that's a reason I was there). Interesting customer service. I should also mention that the place is sort of run down and slightly dirty. The smell of polish remover and chemicals is also stronger than any place I've ever been to. It was really noticeable. The result of my manicure was fine-- nails look good-- but the process was... aggressive. Nail tech aggressively jabbed at my cuticles and although it didn't hurt, it could've been cleaner. Additionally, I had dark nail polish on previously that she had removed, but she didn't remove it completely and was about to polish (with a very light color) over dark splotches left on my nails. When I asked about this she said it wouldn't come off. I actually had to teach her about using the nail brush dipped in polish remover to get at the remaining dark polish under my nails. Totally bizarre! To me a manicure is a treat and if I'm going to pay for a service, I expected to be treated properly. This definitely didn't happen today. NOT WORTH THE $15! My little manicure bubble's been burst here. (sob) Granted, 5pm on a warm-ish Friday in May is NOT ideal for a speedy service check-up for the digits. HOWEVER, when I sign in, and ASK politely how long the wait is, and the manager tells me "short, maybe 5 minutes," I really do not expect to be there for closer to 60 minutes waiting. But, ok. I get it. Out of their control, and a metric ton of ladies up in here getting spiffy for the weekend. I can be patient. Sometimes. Not really, but I fake it well. What I can NOT excuse is a rushed, hasty, half-assed manicure after waiting for 60 minutes. Total time: 10 minutes. ANNOYED. I am ANNOYED. For $15 = tip (cash only tips, another annoyance), I can go get my nails done, massaged, dried, have them put my shoes on AND not have to sit in a cramped chair. Let me preface this review by stating that I am writing this hesitantly as I am selfish and don't want to make my most favorite Chicago nail salon busier than it already is, because I hate to wait. Alright, on to the review. I get a no-chip every two weeks and Tony is AMAZING. He is the absolute best nail tech I've ever had, and I've gone through a number in my day. Not a single one of my Tony no-chips has EVER chipped. He also did me some super cute nail art around Christmastime so I would have festive, cute nails! Tony is thorough and gentle and FAST. I'm always amazed how quickly my three coats go by! He's talented. And a super nice guy to boot. Allure carries all your typical brands of polish - Essie, OPI, China Glaze, and a few other brands I'm not familiar with. For No-Chip, you can choose from OPI GelColor, Shellac, Gelish, IBD, and drumroll please, the brand new ESSIE GEL!! (Which I am currently wearing and loving.) If you're into matching hands and feet, OPI makes it easy because their colors are the same. Essie has "similar" colors because they couldn't exactly replicate their regular polish colors into their gel line. But they are supposed to be close enough that you won't be able to tell since your fingers and toes are far enough apart! The fifth star is reserved on account of a couple of things. First, the waiting. Oh, the agony. I get that this is a busy salon, especially on weekends, which is why I try my best to only go on weekdays. However, sometimes this just isn't possible for me. This past Saturday, I had a 2:30 appointment and arrived at 2:25 to see that Tony had literally just begun another client's manicure. I waited around for 35 minutes. What the hell is the point of an appointment if you're going to neglect to keep it? This isn't the first time this has happened, either. I never received an apology or even a "thanks for waiting." Disappointing, since I'm a regular and have referred A LOT of people here (I even have a few of their business cards in my purse in case people ask where I get my nails done). Another little complaint is that my pedicures never seem to last more than 10 days without chipping because they use cheap base coat and top coat. I'm going to start bringing my own Essie stuff so that they will last longer. So, the fifth star will most likely go unearned. But this is a great place for a very affordable mani-pedi ($30 special) or no-chip ($30 special). Cash is king here, so if you want the special, pay cash. Otherwise it's $3 extra. I have been going to Allure Nail Spa pretty consistently for about a year. I've done everything no chips, regular mani/pedi, tips, dip... everything. I've never been 100% happy with the results of what I was getting, but I just kept going back because it is convenient and there's never a wait (maybe a sign to stop going). Anyways, recently my no chips have been chipping within a week and even my pedicures chipping within a week. I wouldn't say I'm overly hard on my nails either. I went in the other day to get it fixed before a vacation and the people working there remembered that I had just been in. Instead of soaking off my no chip, it was RIPPED off my nails, completely destroying the top layer of my nails. As I sat in the pedicure chair, I was holding back tears because I was planning to have an engagement photo shoot and with these nails!!! **see picture** With all that being said, that was my last straw, $60 later to fix what should have lasted at least 2 weeks from my prior visit, I will not be going back. When it come to Allure Nail Spa I say two words: BE CAREFUL. Yesterday I walked in to Allure, and was told I could have a manicure pedicure right away. Score, right? Wrong. I sat in the chair and first noticed the bowl she was running water in looked dirty - a soap scum on the edges. The nail person quickly poured in more of the soap when she noticed me looking. Well, I settled in to a magazine and the pedicure began. Well color me surprised when on the FIRST TOE she touched, she clipped at the nail and I literally shouted "OUCH!" She had clipped the nail deep into the nail bed and my toe started bleeding. What make this worse than the mistake of a novice clipping toes? Instead of saying, "Oh sorry! Did I hurt you?" or "I apologize!" she stares at me and says, "You don't want me to cut your nails?" I said, "Well I don't want you to hurt me. And now my toe is bleeding." She tried to blame an ingrown toe nail, which I don't have. THEN, she pours alcohol on the toe - obviously I jerked my foot back in pain." And she snickered, saying something in vietnamese to her co-worker, who looked away sheepishly. She continued the pedicure, but seemed to only be half paying attention. And it was obvious she was resentful of her position as a nail person, when she sighed then argued with me about choosing a polish. And she used the cheese grater thing for calluses and left me with a jagged skinned foot. I cancelled the expected manicure that was too follow, as I just wanted to cut my losses and get out of this place. By the way - this was now 50 minutes later - no manicure. So now I am left with a mediocre pedicure, rough sole of my foot, unpainted hands, and a sore big toe for my weekend of walking around town. It is the next day and my toe is so sore I can't wear a closed toe shoe. Just keep walking down the street people - there are five more salons within two blocks. read more

But after the gracious and overwhelmingly warm welcome I received here, I fear not because I feel like George and Tina are old friends after my first visit, so share it is.... Immaculate, clean, cute, comfy shop with warm colors and state of the art pedi thrones. Plasma is a nice touch and nice diversion as I forgot my reading glasses. High quality OPI and esse products in current colors and of course the added bonus of your own toolbox. Yes, they are expecting you back, and they are right, if not for the immaculate salon, wonderful prices, spectacular skills you'll be back for the exceptional hospitality and gregarious customer service. I can go to any salon in the city but even though N Y isn't in my hood this is worth the drive. I wish them the best and hope they are ready for onslaught! I came in after reading the good reviews on yelp, and left with uneven polish, a bloody cuticle, and a sore impression. To be fair, I didn't have an appointment, and waited about 20 minutes before sitting. Like a few reviewers have pointed out, the service felt very rushed. She took clippers to my cuticle like she was clipping hedges. No wonder it made me bleed, which was something she was not concerned about. The gel manicure removing processing was interesting. They wrapped my fingers in tinfoil which contained a reservoir of acetone in it for about 10 minutes. I don't know if that's standard, but the gel peeled off after the chemical soaking, and the remnants she scraped off pretty roughly. Another thing that really turned me off was how they don't understand their own yelp check-in deal. They insisted that I print out the Yelp Check-in 10% off deal. I kept telling them that I can't print out the check-in deal and got pushed back with "Okay just this once you can show us your phone...next time print it out". How frustrating. read more

I made it all the way over here from Bucktown, and it just wasn't worth it. I see the $35 deal, but the bottom line is about quality, how long the polish lasts, and not feeling rushed. My aesthetician wasn't as friendly, but it's not what I really go to get my nails done for. They have a different nail dryer that are timed, and I don't really like that because you have to move to push the buttons if you need to add additional time for them to dry longer and increasing your chances of messing them up! A friend and I were in the area and last minute decided to get mani/pedis. We called and made reservations, but when making the reservations, they didn't ask for our names. Apparently, you can just walk in and say I called for reservations. When we arrived, we were sat right away. Put our feet in the lava, I mean water. Told the technician it was too hot and he quickly adjusted the temperature. I was serviced immediately, but my friend waited at least 40 minutes before being helped. On to the mani - when pushing my cuticles, the technician pushed so hard the stick jammed into my nail bed. They cut me, man! And let me tell you, it sucks. So there I was bleeding, no response from the technician, except pulling out the green bleed be gone glue. I get up to wait for my friend who was just starting her mani. When she's finally done, she comes to the drying area and guess what? They cut her too! I've never been cut from a nail service, but I guess there is a first time for everything. NAIL POLISHES SELECTIONS -- plenty of Essie, some OPI, and plenty of China Glaze and an unknown brand. VENUE -- cramp and cluttered Argyle style. TECHS -- mature with outdated methods of doing things. Hand Massage with manicure was flimsy and useless. The steps of doing nails is something I would do at home. NAIL SHAPING -- not thorough. Hang Nails still there. I mentioned, "round and short please." Tech asked, "straight and square?" Oi! The cuticle cutter needed to be sharpened as it was snag and pull galore (thankfully, she didn't cut me). DRY STATION -- whenever one exist, it is always doubtful that pedicure will be flawless when you put your shoes on. I've been coming to this place for a year now and they always do a good job on my fillins. I came in last Thursday March 12th 2015 and got a fillin and by Friday the 13th, 8 of my finger nails all chipped off!! Now that's very normal here as I been loyal for over a year. So I just went in today at 7:30pm to get them "fixed". They told me my nails were "bad" and nobody would correct the mistakes "they" made. I said your a nail place how can you not fix them. Plus if they are soooo bad why didn't you tell me last week when I was here "hey you should do another set". After having Tony, Kim and the other guy all in my face about how bad they were, they made me sit there for 1 hour before I would be helped. Then I was called over to Kim's Chair and she was huffing and puffing. I said you know what, I've been nice enough. Just fix them. I'm not gonna pay another 30$ from last week. So she sent me over to Tony. He did my nails and At the end he said ok you ready to pay, I look at him and was like ummmmm I just told you guys I'm not paying. He literally got in my face and started screaming at me, throwing his arms all over the place. Then Kim got up and started yelling at me too. He said to be beautiful isn't free. Great experience! Walked in for a mani-pedi on a Friday afternoon and they were easily able to accommodate. They did a thorough job on the mani-pedi, but were still speedy enough to get me in-and-out without feeling rushed. My biggest pet peeve with nail places is when they go really fast and miss the edges of your nails when painting. At first I thought that was happening, but the guy doing my manicure did a very thorough second coat and was sure to carefully inspect for any issues. The manicure lasted longer than expected, as I was traveling for the holidays and on the beach for a while. This place is out of my way, but if I'm ever in the neighborhood again, I'd go back. Also - mention the Yelp special and the mani-pedi is only $29 instead of $35! read more

Sorry to be the one to break the five star trend, but while my experience at New York Nail Spa today was great, it wasn't five-star. The salon is much cleaner and well-decorated than I expected. I was greeted immediately and signed in. George introduced himself and shook my hand, asking how I had heard about them. I explained that I work about a block away and had been meaning to give them a try. I didn't mention Yelp as to avoid skewing my experience. I chose my color and sat down with my nail technician. She didn't say a word to me the entire time, which was okay because there was a great episode of 'Made' on TV. During my mani, another woman came by to say hello and ask me how I had heard about them (I presume that she was Tina) and I gave her the same story I'd given George a few minutes before. Anyway, the manicure is nice and the hand massage was extra long. The reason that I am deducting a star is because my nail technician answered her cell phone while she was doing my nails not once, but twice. Granted, the conversations were short but I still thought it was very unprofessional. If she had continued working on my nails while talking on the phone I couldn't have cared less about her doing it, but unfortunately she was not able to multi-task. No one offered to hang up my coat, though I noticed the other customers who left while I was there had all had their coats hung up for them in the little nook. I certainly don't need to be waited on hand and foot, but it's important to have consistency in the way you treat your customers. Maybe they just didn't like me? Ha. The personal toolkits are great, though it seems like it could be a bit wasteful when they have no idea if people will come back a second time. Either way I will be going back because it's cheap, clean and a block from work. Oh and the coupon for $5 off for new clients is only good for a mani/pedi. Ok, I've been here 2 times now, and I am super impressed. George and Tina, the owners, are very professional and actually act like they are happy you chose their salon. In a lot of nail salons around the city I feel like I'm inconveniencing the technicians by coming in. Not here. It's incredibly clean. I love the fact that they keep dedicated sets of nail implements for their clients. They store them in a little box and they are only used by YOU! No worries (well, less) of skanky infections or fungus a la Paula Abdul. The price is amazing, $35 for mani-pedi. Yesterday I had Linda, and she did a phenomenal job. I can't stop looking at my gorgeous, coral toes. Chairs: very comfortable (they recline!) and they play movies on a big plasma if the numerous copies of Us, People and Star don't keep you interested.
