This is the best Italian restaurant I've been to in a long time. It's five stars for their service, atmosphere, and their food. Not just service with a smile, we were entertained. It was fun watching them fix drinks and mix pasta in the cheese wheel. Sparkling water House salad: candied walnuts and raisins make it next level. House pasta: corkscrew pasta with homemade vodka sauce is delicious. Filet mignon Diane: tender, juicy, lots of flavor here. Birthday dessert - raspberry tiramisu Complimentary small strawberry filled cannoli was the best cannoli I've ever eaten. There are three levels of dining rooms. We were up on the second floor. Spoiler: it's not the name. Clean, clear, smells like any other bourbon until that first sip reveals just how perfectly blended it is. The kind of drink you savor while watching the sun set on the horizon. Crème Brûlée Espresso Martini - As my heart rate settled from the first drink I needed something to kick it back up. One sip and I could've read the dictionary cover to cover without blinking. Close your eyes and the aroma takes you straight to that first cup of coffee fresh out of the pot. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Martini - Beautiful presentation but flatter in flavor than the previous two. However for a final cocktail that was exactly the point -- the perfect calm down after a rich and spicy meal. - Food: 4.25 / 5 Bread, Oil & Dip: A great palate cleanser that quickly taught me the chef loves his spices. The dip was described as "Italian Hummus" and if this is the standard I completely understand the hype. Appetizer - Ceviche Peruviano: Think of that forgotten appetizer thrown together last minute for a dinner party, a hodgepodge of raw fish and vegetables. But every bite delivers an explosion of complementary flavors, and that sneaky hint of spice hiding in the raw fish bites will wake you up immediately. Pre-pasta - Tuscan Kale Salad: Needed something to cleanse my palate after the spicy ceviche and frankly I am tired of Caesar salad. Not a kale fan normally because it tastes like dirt, but the lemon vinaigrette adds just enough flavor to make that dirt genuinely enjoyable. Pasta - Cacio E Pepe: Easily the highlight. My buddy describes it perfectly as fancy fettuccine. I have never liked fettuccine until now. My server, who prepared it himself, recommended adding house chili oil for a slight kick. I went one click past recommended and even then it was still divine. I would order it again without hesitation. Entrée - Veal Chop, Lobster Tail & Vegetables (Chef's preference): After riding Cloud 9 all evening I felt like Icarus flying too close to the sun. One word: bland. The veal was overcooked with all the flavor locked into the fat, and the lobster tail tasted like a convenience store impulse buy. The best use of those bones would be soup stock. I had no desire to finish it. Dessert - Tuxedo Crème Brûlée: As much as I wanted the house raspberry tiramisu I left the choice to my server after some back and forth. He recommended this for its balance of sweetness and berry bitterness and he was right. The perfect final note to tap out on. Service: 10 / 5 Even now, I still don't think I tipped my server enough. Dining alone, he made the evening feel like I had a companion at the table. Great conversation, personalized attention, and a level of service that few will ever experience. I liked the vibe. I appreciate the history. It felt old school and authentic. The food was just OK though and the prices are high ...for just ok. We had the oysters, they were fine. I had the Caesar, nothing notable there. We split the Cacio E Pepe and the preparation was cool and it tasted good. I did appreciate that the server gave us a little backstory about the preparation, it's definitely a unique experience to watch them prepare it table-side. I had the veal, prepared as suggested, and it was fine. I was also extremely full at this point, which maybe took away from the flavor. I did bring it home and ate it the next day and I still thought it was just fine. I liked my experience. Have been fortunate to have eaten at AF a couple of times recently. Have had Anthony stop by and discuss wines and he was wonderful, really helped picking outstanding wines. The bread service to start is so good. On recent visit ordered a special Soft Shell Crabs and Chicken Piccata. The crabs were so good and the Chicken was excellent. The salad and cavitappi Alla vodka are always a wonderful compliment to the meal to start the meal. The servings are large and yes we had enough for lunch the next day. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for sometime and was excited to try it tonight for a friends birthday. I was disappointed. It took almost an 40 minutes for a server to come by. I felt like the quality of the food was just meh. I began my meal with a salad which was just okay. The noodles on both the vodka pasta and cacio e peppe were overdone. I felt like both sauces were lack luster but preferred the Cacio because at least it had some fan fare. I chose the chicken parmigiana for my entree and did not enjoy it. The sauce was so acidic and lacked seasoning. The chicken was pounded so thin that it became rubbery. I would equate it to wedding food. The whole dinner took around 3 hours (though we had a larger party). For the price tag, I don't think i'll be coming back based on the food. read more

Superb food excellent staff. We have eaten here several times. The restaraunt is near our daughter and son-in-law's house so we have gone here after dropping off our grandchildren. We tend to be foodies (my husband is from a spice family) so we ask a lot of questions. The waitstaff either know the answers or gladly go to the kitchen and get complete answers. Their gazpacho was a nice treat wth good spicing and a the unusual addition of crab meat. The Tuscan kale salad combined a variety of flavors and textures. I am a huge kale fan but my husband is not so he got another appetizer. The veal masala was tender and flavorful. We tried the house salad, which was incredibly fresh and the vodka pasta. Pasta was to die for, sweet, creamy and adding in their chili olive oil made it the perfect dish. We tried the veal margherita and chicken Parmesan, each consisted of 3-4 pieces of meat and cooked perfectly. Service was prompt, came by at all the right times. We were sat an hour before closing and still had enough time to enjoy a drink and have all three courses with a few minutes to spare. Words almost fail to capture just how great the night was! from the incredible food to the warm, attentive service that made us feel genuinely celebrated from start to finish. Absolutely incredible dinner at Alla Famiglia. Started the night off with their smoked provolone, escargot, mussels, and giant meatballs. All the appetizers were delicious, my favorite was the smoked provolone. So good. After a round of some very tasty espresso martinis, some bottles of wine, and a round of tequila shots, we ordered our entrees. I went with the Veal Milanese per our waitress' recommendation. No joke, this was amazing. Absolutely worth the price in my opinion. Tender veal perfectly fried and resting in a pool of butter. Topped with crab and other tasty things. Highly impressed. Also got to try the Cacio E Pepe and the Cavatelli Alla Vodka. Both were great, I think I enjoyed the Cavatelli slightly more. Overall, one of the most amazing dinners ever. Food was incredible. Nice dinner out with family, but be prepared to be there for a while. Our reservation was at 5 PM, but we didn't receive our check and leave until after 8 PM. We weren't in a rush and enjoyed spending the time with family. However if you're not, I would keep that in mind. When we came up to the valet, no one was there so we ended up seeing a lot that said Alla Famiglia Only and parking there. When we walked up to the restaurant, valet was there now and we asked if it was okay that we parked. They said it was fine with a smile. (Spoilers: their attitude changed later!) Dinner was fine! We enjoyed the multiple courses, particularly the cacio e Pepe tableside. And the dressing on the casa salad was so delightful. The course pacing was incredibly relaxed, which I was fine with but some of my table mates were a little frustrated by the long waits. I had the tagliatelle with seafood and boy did they pack it with seafood! My husband enjoyed the veal cutlet but others found their steaks and veal chop to be mediocre for the price. We also tried the tiramisu and pumpkin creme brûlée for dessert, all delicious. When we went to our car, the valet yelled at us, saying next time we parked in this lot we'd get towed. We explained what happened and he essentially said we were lying. That definitely soured the experience for us! We had a private event at Alla Famiglia yesterday evening at 6pm. They have valet parking for $8 or you can do street parking like we did that's $1 an hour. A friend and I got there early so we asked to see if we can grab a glass of wine upstairs at the bar. They don't have any happy hour specials and got a glass of wine each. The inside is on the dim side and upscale. Once it came time for our event the hostess got us and led us back downstairs to the private event room. The room bright and gorgeous with the chandeliers. There were about 30 of us or so and they set it up so that there were long tables (last time we had an event there they had round tables). They then had staff walk down the line for each table and serve us our food. I really liked the red wine vinaigrette for our salad and the bread in the bruschetta was delicious. Everyone really enjoyed our pasta options as well as the fish and the chicken options. I thought their greens and beans with sausage was just fine. The nice thing was that there were plenty of leftovers packed up in leftover containers for us to take home. The cannoli desert was self serve. I was a bit surprised that such a nice place like Alla Familigia would have those small white styrofoam containers that aren't necessarily the most sturdy. read more

Tonight I went to Alla Famiglia for a business dinner and it was FABULOUS! Our server (sadly I am blanking on her name) was impressive and knew the menu - both food and wine - in and out! Very thorough with her explanations! We also had another chef (?) served (?) .. his name was Chewy and he was a ray of sunshine! That man deserves a raise! Such great twist on classics. The veal chop was perfectly cooked, rich with the flavor of the butter in which it was seared. I had the Duck Ragu on my pasta and it was delightful. Another wonderful night at Alla Famiglia! Love their holiday decor- very classy and homey. I love to come this time of year. We started with a cocktail in their cigar lounge where Caitlin took great care of us. Once it was time for our reservation, the host team guided us to our table. Autumn introduced herself and guided my 2 out of town friends through the menu flawlessly. We ordered a round of espresso martinis, and they are truly one of my favorite in the city. Lexy assisted with our courses and helped out with anything we needed. We started with the meatball and the greens and beans as starters are both were phenomenal shareable starters. After the starters, we got our salad course where we all got the casa salad, one of my favorites! During the pasta course, we got one of the classic vodka and then upgraded to the cacio e Pepe pasta. We absolutely love their spicy oil that the team brought over. For entrees, we got the Veal Chop, Del Mare (Pasta) and the Filet Mignon in the tartufo prep. Everything was wonderful and blew my out of town friends (Italians from Jersey iykyk) minds that Italian can be this good in Pittsburgh. Chewy checked in on us as well. 4.5 stars. Alla Famiglia is an upscale Italian restaurant that opened in 1997 and was purchased by the current owner in 2005. Its menu lists foods such as oysters, salads, pastas, chicken, lamb, veal, steak, and branzino. Please see my attached photos for the menu in December 2024. Alla Famiglia also has a full bar and a cigar room. My husband and I ate one dinner here. The seating hostess and two servers promptly and politely served us. We greatly enjoyed everything that we ate. Here are descriptions for our foods and beverage: Free bread - The bread came with a very tasty white-bean dip and spicy-pepper olive oil. Casa Salad - This salad contained mixed greens, roasted peppers, spiced walnuts, olives, gorgonzola, and a red-wine vinaigrette. Hail Caesar Salad - This salad consisted of romaine lettuce, crostini, parmesan, and Caesar dressing. Cavatappi Alla Vodka - This pasta contained marinara, cream, vodka, olive oil, and basil. Cacio e Pepe - Linguini was mixed inside a Locatelli Romano cheese wheel at the tableside. It was fun to watch, and it tasted very cheesy. Seafood Diavola - My entree contained tender lobster tail, scallops, mussels, and clams in a flavorful tomato sauce. Ripieno Veal - This veal was a very large size. It was stuffed with prosciutto, sage, and provolone and topped with mushrooms and a red-wine demi-glacé. It looked like a masterpiece! Raspberry Tiramisu - This tiramisu contained mascarpone, liquor, vodka, and raspberry preserves. White-chocolate martini - This beverage had flavors of white chocolate and bourbon. For the two of us, we spent a couple hundred dollars plus a tip. The serving sizes were large, so we walked out of the restaurant with bagged leftovers. Please note that this restaurant is in a neighborhood that has a high crime rate. As we were departing the restaurant, a vehicle with two people tried to stop my husband and me. Alla Famiglia is the best of two words - classic old school Pittsburgh Italian and modern Italian cuisine. Your meal comes with bread and dipping oil, house salad, & pasta a la vodka and that's all before your main entree arrives! The food is classic and comforting but also fresh and incredibly delicious. I got the seafood Diavolo as my main - the sauce was incredible, spicy but not too spicy and the seafood was cooked perfectly - no rubbery lobster here. Also don't skimp on the appetizers or dessert (although it helps if you have people to share with because it's a lot of food) our table ordered the Giant Meatball and Smoked Provolone which were both incredible as well as the Raspberry Tiramisu for dessert which was a refreshing change up from the classic (and I love the classic!) Wow, super expensive. Like Jesus Christ this is Pittsburgh. The food was delicious but damn, I am shocked that this city even has a restaurant that has an $80+ plate. For this reason, I saved this restaurant to go to for my birthday. The food was great as well as the service but as someone that was born and raised in NYC, I just knew that there was no reason to be paying $80 for reveal in Pittsburgh. Wine bottles were also expensive but there were some mid range prices as well. Cheapest bottle was $59. The ambience was definitely giving old school high end Italian restaurant. An incredible Italian experience! Could not recommend Alla Famiglia enough. The way the meal works and the way they structure the menu is a little different than most places. First off you're set with a sort of fixed menu, you're going to get a bread basket, their house salad, a vodka pasta and then you pick your main. Depending on your main you've chosen you will pay a certain price. Now you can also choose any of their appetizers which is an additional charge and also upgrade your salad or pasta to a different option as outlined in their respective section. And that's it! Clear as mud. We got the meatball as a group of 4 to share which was great with the bread. The pasta bowl they gave us was quite a lot and we all were able to get seconds/thirds as a group of 30 something men. Several of us got their specials so I cannot comment on their menu but the specials were fantastic. One of my friends got a lamb shank with lobster that was on the pricier side but looked incredible. This place may be on the more expensive side in Pittsburgh but it's well worth the money and not backbreaking respectively. I would make it a point to come back every time I'm in the area! We met a group of friends the other night for our first time at Alla Famiglia. We grabbed some street parking before seeing that there was an open spot in their small parking lot beside the restaurant. Some of those spots are reserved for valet parking. But - no matter. Despite some warnings from some older Burghers about the neighborhood, we felt perfectly safe. The ambiance of the place draws you in -- an old theater that's been nicely refurbished/repurposed. I was a bit alarmed at the large staircase we had to climb, because one of our party has mobility issues (but she was fine - there's a railing and she could go slowly pulling herself along). We had a nice corner table in the front windows - though they had the thick, velvet theater-style curtains mostly covering them. Dark walls, dark curtains - it's a vibe! Our server was excellent - and she had a team helping her which always makes for the best experience. The menu is pretty large - with pasta and salad accompanying most meals. You can "upgrade" to Cacio e Pepe from the vodka pasta ----- do it. The pasta prepared table side in a giant block of parm cheese is excellent. We chose the salad upgrade to a Caesar - which was disappointing. The dressing was weak and the anchovies not flavorful. The house salad looked better. For apps - the 7 of us shared the giant meatball (tender, flavorful) and the smoked provolone (our fave - served on a hot, skillet w/ a smoky, truffle yumminess topped w/ spicy arugula -- def don't miss this dish!). That doesn't sound like much for 7 adults, but there was so much food by the end of the meal - it was enough! Our entrees were good. I thought my halibut (lightly breaded) in a tomato cream - on the specials list - was really good. The pork chop some had received mixed reviews. My husband's was overcooked. The spiced apple/onion dish on the plate was interesting and went well with the pork. The accompanying roasted 1/2 sweet potato was simple and fine. The Fred Flintstone-style "paddled" veal chop received pretty good reviews (veal is a specialty here). One friend apparently always gets chicken parm and - as usual - liked her dish. We all had giant to-go containers. Our friends ordered 3 desserts for sharing: dulce de leche cheese cake w/ an apply-spicy topping (FAVE), the raspberry tiramisu (really good; our server said this is a house specialty & never leaves the menu no matter how much it changes), & the gigantic olive oil chocolate cake (pretty good). We had a few bottles of nebiolo - all good (at $99, this one of the lesser $$ bottles of wine). All in all - it was a nice evening, but it came with quite a price tag. My husband and I paid for 1 bottle of wine and an app - along with our entrees - and our total was $350 with tip. That's pretty steep - even with our leftovers. Absolutely the best meal ever! It has taken me SO long to get here and my husband making this my birthday dinner was definitely worth the wait. We started with the meatball appetizer - 12oz filled with mozzarella, swimming in their delicious signature sauce. We both upgraded our salads to the Caesar. The crouton was delicious and the salads were dressed perfectly. Also, weird to note but the salad was SO cold, in a good way, and it tasted so fresh and crisp. I got the vodka pasta and my husband upgraded to the cacio e pepe & we split them both. They make the cacio e pepe table side which was fun to watch. The vodka sauce was simple and amazing. Both pastas were so good, I couldn't choose which one I liked more. Lastly, I had the most tender filet of my life. It was cooked perfectly and practically melted in my mouth. I chose the Gorgonzola preparation and would definitely get it again, although the filet was so good on its own. My husband had the best chicken parmesan of his life. Three huge pieces that were light, airy, and fried to perfection. Our server surprised me with a complimentary dessert which was such a nice touch. She was very attentive, personable, and explained the menu very well. Every course was timed perfectly. The meal was so filling & we had tons of leftovers which I was really happy about. This is old school Italian at its finest. It's a beautiful, dimly lit restaurant, very welcoming when you walk in. Every course was delicious from start to finish. The bread with two different spreads was such a nice touch. I really appreciated them being able to accommodate my dairy allergy as well. The fresh cavatappi with marinara was to die for. I had the tartufo filet for my entree and it was perfectly cooked and tender. The wine list is carefully curated with many Italian varietals and non-Italian as well. My family and I rarely go out to eat. But for my parents' 30th wedding anniversary, we decided to splurge on what we ultimately concluded was the "best meal we've ever had". The valet chauffeur was efficient (he jogged to get our car and opened every door for us). The restaurant itself was clean and obtained a unique interior architecture that isn't common to most Pittsburgh restaurants. Our server, Natalie, offered a quick wit and fresh experience to our service. Alyssa was the servers assistant and couldn't have been more polite. The service was exceptional, as well as the food. We recommend Alla Famiglia to any Pittsburgh native that hasn't experienced this restaurant; as well as any visitors who are looking for a "good spot" to try in Pittsburgh. read more

Just a fantastic dining experience! The food was great. I had the Chicken Piccata. Salad and pasta are included and were really good. At our table, we got both the Cacio de Pepe and vodka sauce with our pastas so that we could share. (Great advice Victoria). The Cacio de Pepe was prepared in a cheese wheel (nice work Justin). We really liked the house salad and the Cacio e Pepe. Both were delicious and had wonderful flavor. I got the Gorgonzola filet mignon and my husband got the veal chop ripieno. I liked mine a lot, but my husband said he would not reorder the veal chop - not because it was bad, it wasn't just his taste. We split the raspberry Tiramisu for dessert. It was delicious! Highly recommend. My biggest qualm is that I had booked for Valentine's Day weekend, and though I had looked to see if they were serving from a special menu, I couldn't find that on their Instagram or Website. When we arrived, they WERE service from a smaller, special menu. I just wish we had known that in advance. Also, they sat us in a VERY dark and VERY quiet back room, so it was hard to have a conversation without disturbing the other two tables in the room. read more

Everyone raves about alla Famiglia. We're from Philadelphia but came with the in laws in Pittsburgh. The pasta was extremely underwhelming and not good. It wasn't the worse but .... Definitely not that good at all and don't have interest in having it ever again. We are spoiled being in the philly nyc areas often and have access to the best Italian restaurants; it's hard to impress us when it comes to Italian. So I'm sure some people think it's great and that's fair. We just didn't like it. If you have to choose I'd get the alla vodka pasta. The cacio e Pepe was bland and very oily from olive oil.... Not creamy at all and lacked authentic Locatelli flavor due to the way it's made. Chunks of cheese block in the pasta - this is not a true cacio e Pepe it was like eating buttered or oiled noodles with some cheese thrown on. The veal was to die for. And I thought the chicken parm was absolutely delicious too. Their meat dishes are top tier for sure. Pasta needs work especially for the "hype" .... Service was less than average. Our waitress disappeared for like 25 minutes after saying hello to us. Took ages to actually order our food; extremely frustrating to me. Then she got my father in laws pasta order wrong. And got my finances salad order wrong. Poor experience I guess but hey we got some good food and liked the restaurant itself. Def in a bad area so just be aware of your surroundings especially women or if you're alone. The restaurant itself was very nice. Overall it was underwhelming over priced and not the best service. I wouldn't return but Glad we tried it; my in laws love it and have gone 4 times so just depends what your taste is! read more

This was truly a five-star experience! What a gem tucked into an unassuming block of Allentown. After spending my last birthday at their sister restaurant Arlecchino in McMurray, we decided to celebrate another special occasion here. I made a reservation earlier that day, grabbing their one available time slot via OpenTable. It's beautiful inside, with an unexpectedly lush lobby and staircase to greet you and, though we were seated on the first floor, I understand there are more rooms of seating up there as well as a full bar. Our server invited us to take a peek before we left but we will leave it as something to discover on the next visit! We were seated on the first floor near the kitchen which had a rustic but still upscale Italian vibe, with big, bright windows facing the street. Just a great ambience. Dinner started with bread and the most delicious dipping oil. They also brought a small bowl of savory hummus for the bread. Your salad and pasta courses come family style if you order the same thing and I was all about wanting the Cacio E Pepe, which they make tableside in a Locatelli cheese wheel. It's the stuff of dreams. I never imagined the Cacio could be topped by my main course as this spot is largely about meat dishes. But, when I mentioned being a vegetarian, our server produced a separate vegan and vegetarian menu page with three apps and four entrées. I was stunned. As Arlecchino had done a delicious, off-menu eggplant Parmesan for me I almost defaulted to the eggplant here, but the vegan Bolognese caught my eye and I asked how it was. Our server was enthusiastic so I went for it and it was unforgettable. Five different types of chopped mushrooms, celery, carrots, onions, thyme, sage. Very few restaurants take this kind of time and care to make something so special for vegetarians. I was blown away. There is also an in-house sommelier who is happy to stop by your table to talk wine pairings for your dinner, whether you're looking for a bottle or just a glass. They offer a complimentary birthday treat of a blondie with raspberry compote; we also had their house speciality dessert, the raspberry tiramisu, which is a recipe passed down from the owner's grandmother. It was delicious, though a little on the too-sweet side; next time I would like to try the Italian love cake, which sounds like a decadent death by chocolate kind of thing. I can see why this restaurant is well-known as a standard bearer for Italian in the area. Prices might look a little high on the surface but you will be taking a lot of food home and eating for another meal or two. Worth the treat. read more
