This deserves a bonus star (or I need to quit giving so many other 5 star ratings). A true diamond in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood on the South Side. First tip: come hungry. They will give you more than you can eat (starts with bread, then a salad, then pasta, and then the entree). There is lot parking nearby that you can pay at a kiosk (if you can find parking) or pay a valet. The meal is structured with bread served along side "holy oil" (olive oil dipping sauce infused with herbs and peppers) and fagioli spread for the bread. Incredible so far and gets better. We skipped appetizers and went to the salad. You get a lot of salad. I got the Tuscan kale salad - delicious, with the heavy bitter taste of the kale balanced with apples, candied walnut, and lemon vinaigrette dressing. The star of the evening was the cacio e pepe pasta which they mix in front of you at your table. The taste of the rich Romano cheese, salty with pepper and silky smooth (yet binding) is almost transcendental. You have to just taste this. I can't do it justice in a written review. The main course was the pollo forno. Chicken with a sauce that was almost like chimmichurri, fingerling potatoes. I was still bedazzled from the pasta, but the main course was still scrumptious. This is our second time visiting this restaurant and we loved it just as much. We started our meal with the smoked provolone. It was very over the top and indulgent. I went with the casa salad, it had so many toppings including a lot of blue cheese. I feel it would have been enough for my meal. For my pasta, we did the cacio e Pepe, which what they are famous for. They don't do it table side for GF pasta since it would be cross contaminated. For our main my husband and I shared the margarita veal medallions and the sea bass. Both were very good and large servings. For dessert, they gave us a complimentary champagne glasses and a little dessert. We also got the crème brûlée. It had cherries on top and a chocolate ganache at the bottom. Once again, very indulgent. I had a lemon drop martini that was very good during my meal and a glass of wine. They have a very good wine list but not very affordable. The 2 of us had a reservation at the bar (I think this is where they place many couples), and it was a lovely evening. The meatball appetizer was superb! Our salads were good and the right size. My chicken parm was excellent, but my wife was uninspired by the cavatelli and chicken. She was disappointed that there was no ravioli option. She loved the Aperol Spritz. Service was good, but it's too easy for the bartender to get distracted with drink orders and the other guests. They gave us a cannoli and a champagne toast for our anniversary which was a nice touch. It was a nice night out in a part of town that we rarely venture to. This is the best Italian restaurant I've been to in a long time. It's five stars for their service, atmosphere, and their food. Not just service with a smile, we were entertained. It was fun watching them fix drinks and mix pasta in the cheese wheel. Sparkling water House salad: candied walnuts and raisins make it next level. House pasta: corkscrew pasta with homemade vodka sauce is delicious. Filet mignon Diane: tender, juicy, lots of flavor here. We tried the house salad, which was incredibly fresh and the vodka pasta. Pasta was to die for, sweet, creamy and adding in their chili olive oil made it the perfect dish. We tried the veal margherita and chicken Parmesan, each consisted of 3-4 pieces of meat and cooked perfectly. Service was prompt, came by at all the right times. We were sat an hour before closing and still had enough time to enjoy a drink and have all three courses with a few minutes to spare. Let's start with this: this is not an Italian restaurant. It is a restaurant that has an Italian name but nothing about it is Italian. I've never been served so much slop on a plate in my life. It's an outrageously expensive Bucco de Beppo in a crappy neighborhood. How it has received so many five star reviews as a mystery to me. The wine list has to be the biggest ripoff I've ever seen in a restaurant. I happen to know quite a bit about Italian wine and some of the labels that they were selling for $125 to $150 per bottle are literally $22 bottles of wine. Terlaner for $125 a bottle: what an insulting joke. The Cacio E Pepe was served absolutely cold. I don't even know how they got the cheese to melt on the pasta. Our entrees were absolute slop. And a $400 bill. I guess some people like this kind of restaurant. Judging by some of the clientele I saw; the portion size (enormous) is more important than the quality. read more

Located in the heart of Allentown, it has this old-school, upscale vibe that completely makes the night feel important. The way the menu works is a whole experience in itself: You pick an entree, but it automatically comes with a family-style salad and a giant course of homemade pasta (the cacio e pepe mixed table-side in a massive cheese wheel is insane). You will easily walk out of there with enough leftovers for days. The food is traditional, high-end Italian cooking inspired by Old World scratch recipes, and it tastes completely authentic. They don't cut corners on anything, from the house-rendered sauces to the quality of the meats. It is pricey, so you want to save it for a big celebration or an anniversary. All the appetizers were delicious, my favorite was the smoked provolone. So good. After a round of some very tasty espresso martinis, some bottles of wine, and a round of tequila shots, we ordered our entrees. I went with the Veal Milanese per our waitress' recommendation. No joke, this was amazing. Absolutely worth the price in my opinion. Tender veal perfectly fried and resting in a pool of butter. Topped with crab and other tasty things. Highly impressed. Also got to try the Cacio E Pepe and the Cavatelli Alla Vodka. Both were great, I think I enjoyed the Cavatelli slightly more. Overall, one of the most amazing dinners ever. Food was incredible. Nice dinner out with family, but be prepared to be there for a while. Our reservation was at 5 PM, but we didn't receive our check and leave until after 8 PM. We weren't in a rush and enjoyed spending the time with family. However if you're not, I would keep that in mind. When we came up to the valet, no one was there so we ended up seeing a lot that said Alla Famiglia Only and parking there. When we walked up to the restaurant, valet was there now and we asked if it was okay that we parked. They said it was fine with a smile. (Spoilers: their attitude changed later!) Dinner was fine! We enjoyed the multiple courses, particularly the cacio e Pepe tableside. And the dressing on the casa salad was so delightful. The course pacing was incredibly relaxed, which I was fine with but some of my table mates were a little frustrated by the long waits. I had the tagliatelle with seafood and boy did they pack it with seafood! My husband enjoyed the veal cutlet but others found their steaks and veal chop to be mediocre for the price. We also tried the tiramisu and pumpkin creme brûlée for dessert, all delicious. When we went to our car, the valet yelled at us, saying next time we parked in this lot we'd get towed. We explained what happened and he essentially said we were lying. That definitely soured the experience for us! We celebrated a birthday with a multicourse American-Italian dinner on the second floor of Alla Famiglia while listening to Pavarotti and Sinatra and watching sports TV over the bar. We were also entertained by the map of airports that lights up with three visibility conditions (photo not included). We started with the giant meatball, then house salads. Hubby got the duck pasta, and our entrees were the seafood pasta (impressive seafood to noodle ratio) and a veal chop. The only dishes we finished completely were his salad (despite being drenched in dressing) and the complimentary birthday cannoli. There is definitely cognitive dissonance when leaving such a luxury restaurant with two bags full of leftovers (nothing wasted--it's like your (grand)mother sending you home with "extra") and being asked twice on the way to the car whether you have change for someone's bus fare. Unfortunately, I don't carry a wallet anymore and had nothing to give. We may come back in the future if we have something to celebrate, but we'll probably just share a couple of starters (they charge extra to share), and maybe the tiramisu, although the one the waiter took to another table looked like 4 servings. We had a private event at Alla Famiglia yesterday evening at 6pm. They have valet parking for $8 or you can do street parking like we did that's $1 an hour. A friend and I got there early so we asked to see if we can grab a glass of wine upstairs at the bar. They don't have any happy hour specials and got a glass of wine each. The inside is on the dim side and upscale. Once it came time for our event the hostess got us and led us back downstairs to the private event room. The room bright and gorgeous with the chandeliers. There were about 30 of us or so and they set it up so that there were long tables (last time we had an event there they had round tables). They then had staff walk down the line for each table and serve us our food. I really liked the red wine vinaigrette for our salad and the bread in the bruschetta was delicious. Everyone really enjoyed our pasta options as well as the fish and the chicken options. I thought their greens and beans with sausage was just fine. The nice thing was that there were plenty of leftovers packed up in leftover containers for us to take home. The cannoli desert was self serve. I was a bit surprised that such a nice place like Alla Familigia would have those small white styrofoam containers that aren't necessarily the most sturdy. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for sometime and was excited to try it tonight for a friends birthday. I was disappointed. It took almost an 40 minutes for a server to come by. I felt like the quality of the food was just meh. I began my meal with a salad which was just okay. The noodles on both the vodka pasta and cacio e peppe were overdone. I felt like both sauces were lack luster but preferred the Cacio because at least it had some fan fare. I chose the chicken parmigiana for my entree and did not enjoy it. The sauce was so acidic and lacked seasoning. The chicken was pounded so thin that it became rubbery. I would equate it to wedding food. The kind of drink you savor while watching the sun set on the horizon. Crème Brûlée Espresso Martini - As my heart rate settled from the first drink I needed something to kick it back up. Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Martini - Beautiful presentation but flatter in flavor than the previous two. The dip was described as "Italian Hummus" and if this is the standard I completely understand the hype. My buddy describes it perfectly as fancy fettuccine. I have never liked fettuccine until now. My server, who prepared it himself, recommended adding house chili oil for a slight kick. I went one click past recommended and even then it was still divine. I would order it again without hesitation. Entrée - Veal Chop, Lobster Tail & Vegetables (Chef's preference): After riding Cloud 9 all evening I felt like Icarus flying too close to the sun. One word: bland. The veal was overcooked with all the flavor locked into the fat, and the lobster tail tasted like a convenience store impulse buy. The best use of those bones would be soup stock. I had no desire to finish it. Dessert - Tuxedo Crème Brûlée: As much as I wanted the house raspberry tiramisu I left the choice to my server after some back and forth. He recommended this for its balance of sweetness and berry bitterness and he was right. The perfect final note to tap out on. Service: 10 / 5 Even now, I still don't think I tipped my server enough. A restaurant that can stand the test of time is all about the food and I promise you will crave it! But its staff and atmosphere is what makes it the place you can't wait to come back to enjoy. Yes it's all about the food and it is fabulous and the best Italian food in the city! It has keep an old school flavor and service and atmosphere and moved forward with the times. Tony led us to our pre dinner bar area. Cliff made the best drinks and Daniel was our outstanding server and professional who made our night the best. Veal is their specialty! Their pasta stirred in the cheese wheel is to die for. So amazing. House salad is fresh a little sweetness and delish, Branzini was excellent. Filet was perfection. Vodka sauce was yummy. It was a birthday celebration so the special dessert and our extra raspberry cake with almonds was out of this world. Wine recommendations from Daniel and expertise with the menu welcomed! Amazing with allergies! I sat next to the kitchen and overheard how cautious the chefs were being. Such a fun experience and everything is DELICIOUS!! Which is hard to do considering the portion sizes that everything is cooked so perfectly. Definitely way too much food, so expect to take home leftovers and pace yourself!!! read more
