The pizza was phenomenal! They import their flour from Italy so for gluten sensitive people, this may be a great option! We didn't have a reservation, but they squeezed us in and we were so grateful! A large group of 9 of us had a reservation here recently to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were seated as soon as we arrived. The restaurant is small and so is the dining area. It's a large open space with several tables and some booth/bench style seating along the wall. I wasn't super impressed with the ambiance, but the food and service were pleasant! Every one enjoyed their meals and some had leftovers to go home with. I had the special of the night which was a fettuccini pasta in a vodka sauce with chicken and some extra cheese. The sauce was delicious and flavorful. We all brought wine knowing there was a cork fee. The fee was high ($12 per bottle) in our opinion, but they did provide plenty of glasses and dispose of our empty bottles. The food prices were a little high too. My boyfriend and I had two entrees and brought 1 bottle of wine and still spent almost $100 after tip. Parking is along the street outside or on a nearby side street. read more

We came with recommendations for the sausage/alfredo, pizza, & eggplant. The owner educated us on how each sauce has a particular handmade noodle associated with it. We started with the non-focaccia bread and oil. It was warm, fluffy, and light. It was a nice start and we didn't fill up with on bread. The build the pizza came out with lots of gooey cheese, sausage, & pepperoni. The sausage pasta used an unusual twisty noodle that just held the white sauce delightfully. The eggplant slices were tender and lightly seasoned with a tomato sauce. Five dessert options. Each sounded better than the previous. Made reservations for a Sunday evening- thankfully, because the place was PACKED. The waitress/service in general was awesome! We ordered the arancini napoli as a starter, and it was the first time having it and WOW. Sooo delicious! I also ordered the stracciatella (soup)- I really enjoyed it being a soup lover! The food was okay. Our server was rushing us as soon as we got there and it wasn't even that busy which really bothered me. She also asked if we wanted bread for the table and then didn't let us know it was $14... which seems a little steep considering it's just bread with olive oil. It was good but for $14??? The owner (?) or manager (?) did ask us if everything was good and the food was fine. He was kind. Our server then rushed to pack up our food when we weren't even done, rudely asked if we were finished and then when I asked for a cappuccino after dinner did not even ask the other guest if she wanted anything and quickly scurried away... as if she was late for something. A great spot in Sewickley with some pretty great dishes. Being BYOB, it's a perfect choice for a gals night out. We enjoyed some apps, several pasta dishes were enjoyed, and a couple salads and pizzas. The Gnocchi alla Sorrentina was delightfully pillowy, and my friends loved their Pasta alla Norcina and pizzas! The dinner was great, but we ended up rushing out when finished. We had a reservation at 6:30, the restaurant closes at 9. At 8:30 they must have shut off the wood burning oven for pizza and the entire place was full of smoke. Have heard from a friend about the pizza and pasta and met them for a nice dinner. The menu has some other items too. It is BYOB and they do charge $12 per bottle, a little high compared to other places. Nice place with a garage door that opens onto the sidewalk. Our waitress was so good. Very patient and good with descriptions and recommendations. We started with the Polpette al Sago, traditional meatball, and the Pane tritato, focaccia with some roasted tomatoes and other toppings. Both were a nice start and went well with the Insulate Caprese, a really good mozzarella with a tasty oil glaze. We had a variety of pasta and one person raved about the Chicken Parmigiano. We had a reservation for a Friday night to go out with friends and enjoy pizza to find out the restaurant ran out of pizza. I rarely write a review, but this restaurant has so many amazing ones that I thought I would leave mine. We dined just as the doors open. Party of 6. The ambiance is very comfortable and is entirely what we were expecting for a small but highly rated Italian restaurant. The tables and chairs are sufficient and comfortable. The staff is pleasant and inviting. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. She offered the favorites on the menu and her timing was perfect when we ordered or asked for anything. I wanted to give this review a 4, but the food disappointed. Reviews rave about the pasta with vodka. (We give it a 5) Although it was fresh and pleasing to the eye, it just wasn't creamy or buttery enough like Aviva or even il pizzaiola. We ordered another pasta, the Norwich maybe? That was a 7. It was creamy but just a bit too salty. The main problem for us with the pastas was that the pasta was super al dente. We definitely would've like it cooked a bit more because it was so chewy. The pizzas seam to be the star here for us. We ordered margherita and pepperoni. The cheese and fluffy crust were really good. The focaccia bread appetizer was the best (a 10) on the menu and the calamari was a solid 8. The spinach salad with bacon was very weird and I couldn't really tell what I was supposed to be eating. It was eggs, bacon within a dressing (a ton of it) and spinach. I give it a 4. The chicken Milanese was not good at all. The chicken itself was very bland and the salad on top was extremely salty. You wouldn't want to eat one of them by themselves, which my daughter often did if the salad fell off the chicken. The potatoes were overly seasoned. We gave the meal a 3. Our waitress, on the other hand, acted as if she was doing us a favor every time she neared our table, which was infrequent at best. I loved this place when I first started going about a year ago. It has changed and not for the better! I told everyone they had to try it because the service was amazing. You felt welcome and comfortable. That kind of service where you walked away thinking about how much you loved your waitress. The quality of the food stood out, and there were little extras like the owner stopping by to tell you about how they made a certain dish. My last two experiences were NOT like this. My dining experience was mediocre at best (with a waitress that was pushing me out the door), and food was so-so. The ambiance was not what it used to be. The special is gone, and what is there instead, are extra expenses... a higher corking fee ($12 a bottle) and a $7.50 "caking fee" (on a birthday party of 9 people - nine entres and a 75 year old mother's birthday, it was insulating to see a caking fee! I came here with co-workers last summer while working in the area around lunchtime and learned they're only open for dinner service. So, many months later, even though I live in VA, but travel to the PGH area often for work, I was finally able to brave the crazy traffic to get across the bridge from Coraopolis into Sewickley and try them for dinner. Arriving solo and without a reservation, I felt kind of bad asking for a table for one, as they were really busy, but the manager moved a table and made it work for me and for that I'm grateful, because I was able to enjoy one of the BEST Italian meals in the area! I started with a cup of Stracciatella - Delicious! The broth was very flavorful and you could tell it's housemade and fresh. The egg that's dropped in lumps up nicely and takes on the flavor of the soup. Definitely warm and enjoyable, especially on a cool evening! Next up was their Pane Tritato, which is sort of a thicker focaccia with olives and cheese on top. This was outrageously good and I had to be careful to leave room for dinner or I would have eaten the entire thing, and there's quite a bit in a serving! The olive oil "dip" that comes with it is perfectly seasoned with herbs, parsley and green onions, but the olive oil by itself would have been just as great, as it's incredible and imported from Italy. It reminds me of the incredible olive oil they have at Bar Pitti in NYC. For my entrée, I stuck with the olive oil theme and ordered their Spaghetti allo Scarpariello, which was excellent! The cherry tomatoes add a very nice sweetness to the olive oil and wine sauce. The pasta, freshly made in-house really does an excellent job absorbing much of the flavor and it's texture is spot on, al dente. The garlic in this dish was perfectly portioned, as to not be over-powering, but be present and flavorful! After all this food, I was stuffed and couldn't indulge in their beautiful dessert menu... I'm hoping on my next trip to save room for dessert. I highly suggest making reservations and visiting them, they're doing wonderful things here and clearly the town knows it, as they were packed and do many turns for diner service! read more

Mambo Italia is truly a hidden gem in the Pittsburgh Italian food scene. I have been there about a dozen times since the new owners took over and each time is better than the last. The food, service, atmosphere and cleanliness of the restaurant are all top notch. My favorite thing about Mambo is the uniqueness of the dishes. They have homemade pasta dishes from different regions in Italy that you just don't see on other menus. It makes you want to come back and try them all. Regardless of which one you go with, you HAVE to try the Arancini appetizer. Best Arancini in Pittsburgh and it's not even close. AMAZING! Perfect location in the cutest part of Sewickley. Made reservations because DUH and it is BYOB, so of course I brought my own bottle of wine. There is a uncorking fee just FYI. I didn't care though because everything from the food to the service, and the environment was just QUALITY all around. We tried a few different things from the menu. Nothing disappointed. Situated in the cool town of Sewickley, you can find this gem. First impression upon entering - turn off my hearing aids! Friday evening and Every table was full and it was LOUD! But it was the sound of lively conversations and people trying to talk over each other. As it got a bit later and some tables opened up the noise level reduced accordingly. My wife and I met our friends who had been there 3x before and recommended it and invited us to join them. We arrived a few minutes late and found them already seated as per reservation, talking with one of the owners. We were introduced and welcomed. The restaurant is fairly small, with maybe 16 tables? And as I said in other reviews for small eateries, it enables the owners to be hands on (to the point of helping bus tables), but more importantly to control the quality. And quality it was. Ambience wise I would not say it's first date material only because it's not exactly romantic, but hey, you can always sit side by side. But eat now, romance later! I should also mention that it's BYOB. So don't forget to bring a bottle of red and a bottle of white ("it all depends on your mood tonight " - thanks Billy Joel) The service was first rate and friendly. The prices were very reasonable. But on to the food. Deliciouso! We started out with a Margarita pizza to share as an appetizer. Crushed it. The ladies shared a salad. Not me, I was saving myself for the main. And glad I did. Seafood over tagliatelle pasta was wonderful. I ate every last bite. My wife had the spaghetti with clams, one friend had pollo alla Milanese, the other I'm not sure. The new vibe and menu here DID NOT DISAPPOINT! We were really excited to go back and try this place after we heard it re-opened (and under new ownership). The restaurant was fun & loud, like a true Italian family dinner, portions were huge and the food was very fresh. Would highly suggest a reservation and BYOB! To start, we had the Arancini - not pictured because we ate it so quickly! It was made with pasta vs. rice which was delicious, and the sauce was deeply flavored. We tried both the Insalata Mista & Insalata di Spinaci e Pancetta - both very good. I could've drank a bottle of the homemade dressing on the spinach salad. For dinner, my husband had the Rigatoni alla Vodka and I had the Pasta alla Boscaiola - the flavors in both were perfect and we had enough in both dishes for leftovers! A great spot in Sewickley. There is plenty of street parking nearby. They are a BYOB, there is a liquor store a stone's throw from the restaurant so use that if needed. Restaurant space is nice with big windows but a little loud. Staff was very friendly and service was great. Everything we ate was fantastic, the pizza was especially a highlight. Prices are reasonable though the $12 corkage fee was a bit of a surprise, probably the highest corkage fee I've ever paid in Pittsburgh. Would definitely check them out. read more

terrible experience. i was told my wait would be 1 hour. i went inside to ask how much longer after waiting the hour. the guy in the front told me another 15 mins. i keep waiting. i waited another 30 mins before i went back inside to ask if i would even be able to get seated. the guy tells me that no i will not be sat because the kitchen got behind. this was terrible service. that guy could have told me from the beginning that he wasn't going to sit me down. i would never ever try to come back to this place. and i know they didnt want us to sit there because im spanish and this place was all white. if i could cuss i definitely would. this place was terrible and hateful. i have never experienced this in my life. i will make sure more people are aware of this hateful place. you guys suck read more

I still think it would be a good idea to keep maybe 2 tables open for walk-ins :) . We made a reservation this time and I'm really glad we gave this place a second chance. The food was excellent and the staff was so friendly and attentive. They interacted with my toddler all dinner long :) First of all, I love how the menu details which area in Italy the item is inspired by. We ordered the Pane Tritato appetizer and it was really good. I had never had anything like it before and I appreciated that! I ordered the gnocchi and we got a margarita pizza and that night's pizza special which had candied pancetta, mushrooms, and caramelized onions. The pizza was great, and authentic to the Neapolitan style. I don't eat pork so I didn't try the special but my husband said it was really good. Gnocchi was also very good. You could tell the ingredients they use are high quality which I think is so important. We were so full we didn't try dessert but maybe next time! We will definitely be back. And at least now we know a reservation is a must!! I understand why they have been so booked. I will say that I was hoping for more from the decor. Walls were mostly bare. I always loved the look and ambiance of the "old" Mambo. But they may be working on that since the place recently re-opened. Also, thank you to management for the reply.
