Il pizzaiolo is one of the best TRUE Italian restaurants I have ever eaten at especially in the Pittsburgh area. I am a big pasta person and extremely picky. I am a little bias because I already love it here that being said I have eaten at just about every Italian restaurant in Pittsburgh and everywhere I have traveled in my life. No one will top their ravioli nor their gnocchi which is house made from scratch. I personally recommend gnocchi alfredo with grilled chicken or the ravioli. If you want a basic dish try one of my favorite vodka sauce pastas the Rosa I like it as penne or rigatoni personally. I also love the parmesan risotto with chicken. There is also a long list of options for everyone unfortunately no gluten free guarantee however there are gluten free friendly options it's just a worry of the restaurant that if you have celiacs you are at risk because of the house made pastas being in the air. Just ask your hostess (if you call) or server (if you eat in) about restrictions. The restaurant holds private events which you can call to schedule. There is a banquet area, main dining area, a full bar with first come first serve and a patio available to be seated at. Reservations are STRONGLY recommended as the restaurant can either have a night where it's just a little busy or a night there is an hour wait with no reservation and it's always recommended to call as soon as possible. We made reservations for dinner for our Anniversary we started with Arancini and Beef Carpaccio both Antipasto's were delicious for dinner we had Cavatelli Rapini and IL Ragu both dinners were excellent for dessert we had Italian Lemon Cream Cake and New York Cheesecake Brulee so very good everything was delicious. It is pricey for just pasta. I ordered the Tuscan chicken. The sauce was overly reduced and extremely salty over the risotto. The risotto was mushy. It cost about $32. I had gotten the Tuscan chicken at Ozone, the week before and it was better. It also cost $6. less. My husband's chicken Marsala was over $30 and there were no sides. My friends and I had a girl's night and tried Il Pizzaiolo. I hadn't been for years and they had never been. We really enjoyed it. We started out with the autumn mule which was really good. It's a bit pricey at $16 each. We only had one. My other friend had a beer. My friend enjoyed her ravioli with Marinara and ate the whole thing. My other friend enjoyed her pasta too but I can't remember what it was. I really enjoyed the tagliatelle with Alfredo and prosciutto. I wanted the raghu with red sauce but there was a misunderstanding. The prosciutto was delicious and the pasta and sauce was amazing. The waiter was very nice and patient. I would definitely recommend making a reservation for dinner, even during the week. It was so busy for a Thursday night, every table was filled! We were seated outside on the patio which was really nice. We had a great server too! The food came out in a reasonable time & our drinks were never empty. They give you bread with dipping oil and it was amazing! We started with the meatballs as an appetizer because I saw on Yelp that they were a must have. They definitely were, some of the best meatballs I've had in a long time! I had the Penne Rosa for dinner and it was pretty good. My friends really enjoyed their pasta dishes too. I had the chocolate gelato for dessert and oh my gosh, it was incredible! I'm still thinking about it. The only reason I'm taking a star off is because of the ambiance. It's a super nice restaurant, a little more upscale and no offense to the high schoolers working (food runners, server assistants) but their attitude/service doesn't really match the ambiance the restaurant is trying to go for. Panna pizza - $24 - 5 stars - This pizza consisted of a thin crust that was topped with cream, mozzarella, parmigiano, prosciutto, mushrooms, and olive oil. It was probably the fanciest pizza that I have ever eaten. We particularly enjoyed the large, fresh mushrooms. Chicken marsala - $29 - 5 stars - This entree contained two large juicy pieces of chicken that were covered in fontina, marsala sauce, and many large wild mushrooms. Veal parmigiano - $36 - 4 stars - My husband ate this entree, and I tried one bite. Three pieces of veal were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. On the side was spaghetti with a tasty sauce. As we were leaving the restaurant, the employees told us "thank you," "Happy Valentine's day," and "good night." My overall rating is 4.5 stars, which averages my rating of 5 stars and my husband's rating of 4 stars. My husband lived in Italy for part of his childhood, and he probably ate cheap Italian food there, because he prefers cheap Italian food! All the food we tried was wonderful. We shared an order of mussels and a Caesar salad. Both were delicious! My dad had a draft beer, which he said was great. Drinks, imo, were too pricey. Wine bottles were $60+. A martini was $16. The food was very, very good. The alcohol prices, however, would make me think twice. Alcohol brings a high profit margin.. this place is too high on alcohol. Drop the prices a few bucks on drinks and offer a few $40 bottles of wine.. that would still be pricey but would elevate them to 5 stars. Server was nice. Saw a lot of food mistakes from other diners. Overall, I'll go back, but with hubby alone... and after hitting my local pub for a wine or two before our seating time. This place has been on our list for awhile now. With our second child due any day, we decided we better get to Il Pizzaiolo sooner rather than later. My husband and I enjoy sharing our meals and got a side house salad (which was enormous and full of flavor), rigatoni with sausage and meatballs, and the calzone. After traveling to Italy a few months ago, we learned to appreciate true al dente pasta and our rigatoni was cooked perfectly! The meatballs and sausage were really tasty too! We made a reservation a couple weeks in advance and we're promptly seated on arrival in a nice booth. Complimentary bread and EVOO followed while we reviewed the menu. For our meal we shared a house salad, a rigatoni with meatball & sausage, and a calzone. The salad was a very generous portion and full of fresh ingredients. We got it topped with peppers too. The rigatoni was al dente and the meatball was Heaven! The calzone was a little on the small side and didn't have near as many fixings as I would've expected, but was well cooked in the pizza oven and had nice flavor too. My husband and I chose Il Pizzaiolo to celebrate our first wedding anniversary! I made reservations online, which is always very convenient. Our waitress greeted us right away and we ordered drinks. I ordered the Paloma. Not only was it beautiful looking, it was very delicious and refreshing too! The complimentary bread and oil was delicious. I ordered the penne Rosa (of course I did!) and my husband has the chicken parmigiana. Both meals were delicious! We had to wait a little bit longer for our food to come out because of the amount of take-out orders they had, but we weren't in any rush that night. We enjoy our meals and had a great night.
