Took my daughter & her husband there for her birthday celebration. Service was great, the staff was efficient but best of all, the food. We all agreed after many pizza's from many different different restaurants, this pizza simply blew us all away. Fresh toppings & fresh herbs just made for a indescribably delicious difference. Loved the pizza and the pasta, wasn't a huge fan of the chicken parm, wished that the chicken was breaded. I will say, it's 100% worth the wait. However, our wait wasn't that long since we got there right at 5pm. If you show up late, you'll probably wait since it's very popular and a small place. The food was excellent. I took my wife to the Tomato Pie Cafe for a spur-of-the-moment dinner on a Tuesday. It was a last minute thing because the place has very limited hours and you kind of have to drive by and look at the parking lot before deciding to go in. It's very cozy, with a patio out front and a screened in deck out back, and the staff were very friendly and reasonably efficient. This was our first time so we went with a basic pizza - half plain for her, and half pepperoni for me. It was a really good pie...probably one of the best in the area. However, in addition to the very limited hours (that change with the season), they don't have an alcohol permit and there is a very limited drink selection. They also only accept cash, which was about $3 away from causing an embarrassing situation. There is apparently an ATM inside, but I just made it. We'll probably do another pop-in when the lot looks good, but I think we will try a take-out pie next time. The place is a bit restricive and quirky, but the pizza was a solid 5. read more

I grew up going to Tomato Pie Cafe in North Park and anxiously await for it to open every year since (seasonal). In all of the years going, I've always had pleasant service and the food is typically a 4/5! It's a BYOB spot and only open a few days a week for a few hours so you have to get there right when it opens to snag a spot, or hope you're lucky. They do not take reservations. Recently, I called to place a to-go order at around 5:30pm on a Friday night. I was told the wait would be 1 hour & 45 minutes - While I do think that is quite a long time for a pizza & a pasta dish, I understood it was a busy Friday night and was willing to wait. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was 15 minutes earlier that the anticipated 1hr. & 45 min. wait time but wanted to go in to pay. When I was greeted by the hostess, I said "I am here early for my take out order but wanted to come in and pay." When the hostess went back to the kitchen, all I could hear was the staff in the back complaining about me - "Liz is early, why did she come early, we told her 7:15pm and it's only 7pm, she's not getting her food early" etc. I was appalled that they were speaking that loudly/poorly about a customer, especially when I didn't ask for my food early or anything of that matter. I ignored the comments because the hostess was friendly. I paid and she told me it would be 15 more minutes - totally fine, as I KNEW what the expected order time was. So I went back in after that time to get my food. When the hostess went back to the kitchen this time, I could hear the staff again - "Is she really here for her food 1 minute after the scheduled pick up time?" etc. At this point, I'm like...."what am I doing wrong??" I came in to pay early and then picked up my food at the time YOU told me to? Again, I never said anything about the time/wait/anything!! Finally, I get my food and take it home to eat. The food was truly not good which is the first time I've experienced less than good food at TPC. My usual favorite dish, Penne Pink Leek, was like sludge in the container. The sauce had barely any flavor and was so thin. The ratio of sauce/pasta was not good, there was so much sauce that the pasta was swimming in it. I'm so confused because there was hardly any pasta in the container. I had never ordered the flat bread before but wanted to try it - it is literally just baked dough with a side of marinara sauce to dip. The only "saving grace" of this order was the Tomato Pie Pizza. It was pretty good. I am truly saddened by this experience. I have no idea what I did that was causing the staff to be so angry but I can honestly say, I won't be returning any time soon because of that treatment. read more

We love Tomato Pie Cafe! 2 generations of our family have been going there for 30 years. Our favorites are the penne with pink leek sauce and the chicken Marsala and the grilled chicken salad with outstanding balsamic dressing. Everywhere we go we compare the chicken Marsala to Tomato Pie's and so far nobody can beat Rico's chicken Marsala. I'm not exaggerating at all. I've been here a few times now. While the hours are few and the menu is a bit sparse, everything there is quality. It's a small family owned business that has been around for many years and you can see why when you go. Since they're only open for a few hours, the restaurant is usually pretty full. The food is fresh and there are healthy options, like a beet salad and their healthy version of beans and greens with kale and chickpeas. The pizza, pasta, and salads are all good. I haven't gotten anything I didn't like yet. As I said, the food is very good, but don't expect extras. Like parmesan cheese on your pasta? Nope, not gonna get it. They don't accept credit cards, but have an ATM inside. They don't have alcohol, but allow you to bring your own and don't charge a corking fee. If you're drinking wine, you may want to bring your own wine glasses, too, unless you don't mind possibly drinking out of a regular glass. read more

Everything is delicious. You will get higher quality food than you can get any of the other local Italian restaurants. Ten times the taste & value that can get at Severina's. I do not care about fancy amenities. Everything is delicious l, locally grown, fresh, & quick service. If I go out to eat, it's for the quality of food and fresh ingredients. BYOB is another plus. Waited 45 minutes for our Tomato Pie Pizza......2 people came in after us and got their Pizza 10-15 minutes before us. Meanwhile, a ton of takeouts were picked up while we waited.....Seems like the owner is giving priority to takeout orders at the expense of sit down diners. A couple sitting next to us was charged a $5.00 Corkage Fee. To say he was upset would be an understatement! There was no mention of a corkage fee on the menu & the servers did not say anything about it. He brought his own wine and cups. He went inside and came out 10 minutes later. They removed the corkage fee. My wife and I brought our own wine and we're not charged a corkage fee. Very inconsistent. In a nutshell...Pizza was great and that was all! Let me say one quick negative first; the parking lot is small and crowded and I just bought a new truck so I hate everyone else who drives. So, if you don't want door dings, park as far away as you can and cross your fingers! It's cash only, there is no soda, and the service is slow. These are things that other folks have complained about but which I think are positives. There's just one server (maybe two) but they are doing their very best and we are patient people. Paying with cash is only inconvenient to people who've become too used to modern convenience. As far as not having soda... please, you don't need it anyway. Well this is a tricky review because we ordered Togo from here twice. The staff was kind and efficient both time. The first time was a great experience. We got the greens and beans, the grilled chicken salad and the penne with pink sauce. Everything was flavorful and delicious. Definitely a five star experience. The second time we were super disappointed. We called at 6:30pm were told to arrive at 7:15pm. We paid ahead of time via Venmo. However, When we got there, waited another 10-15 minutes for the food to come out. (Not a big deal) We had ordered the cauliflower, kale and quinoa which was bland and flavorless. We also got the chicken piccata. This dish was full of flavor but had only one chicken breast and felt like it wasn't worth what we paid. Honestly, It felt like maybe our order was forgotten and they threw it together last minute? I don't know? But, it was an underwhelming experience. I know all restaurants are doing the best they can right now, and I think this restaurant needs to be more consistency. We've always gone to Tomato Pie because we love the Tomato Pie Pizza and salad with their signature dressing. But this year the quality has gone downhill. We have gotten 2 Tomato Pie Pizzas in a row that were burnt. On the next order, that was also burnt, I asked them to remake it. They did after some moans from the kids in the kitchen. This one came out soupy and sloppy after a 30 minute wait. But we ate it because we were hungry and it was late. We're going to give them one more chance to get it right and give us the pizza we ordered. If they don't, we'll be done with them unfortunately. Bring your own wine AND glasses too unless you appreciate drinking wine from a thick water glass along with corkage fee. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza for take out and good thing my wife had cash since this place is cash only. When I arrived for pick up it was fairly crowded and had some nice outdoor seating to enjoy the weather. The pizza itself was ok. The pepperoni was a little tastier than most and had a good portion of cheese. I thought the sauce was a little lacking and light but other than that it was a very good meal to eat outside at north park. There are so many great places to eat around here, why would you choose one which only takes cash, on a busy corner, with incredibly slow service? Cash only? In this century? Seriously? Even in Africa I can usually pay for dinner using a credit card. The two staffers working here seemed to be very dedicated, especially the young woman, but the business is clearly understaffed. There's even a large sign outside saying that they need staff, so this must be a permanent situation for them. Why not just pay the staff a little more, be nice to them, and don't have the turnover? This is the real thing-- friendly, welcoming people with genuine roots in Italy and a life remade in America in one generation . The menu is easy to look over quickly but read the description of each dish: this is a kitchen that cares about the quality of every single ingredient . Italian classics like penne primavera but also dishes with a more middle eastern accent: dates with chèvre and mint. Even the beet salad has toasted cashews sprouted watermelon seeds and fresh blueberries. Thank goodness for places like these for people who don't consider chain restaurants an option.
