Penne Pink Leek swimming in sauce with hardly any noodles
    Liz G.

I grew up going to Tomato Pie Cafe in North Park and anxiously await for it to open every year since (seasonal). In all of the years going, I've always had pleasant service and the food is typically a 4/5! It's a BYOB spot and only open a few days a week for a few hours so you have to get there right when it opens to snag a spot, or hope you're lucky. They do not take reservations. Recently, I called to place a to-go order at around 5:30pm on a Friday night. I was told the wait would be 1 hour & 45 minutes - While I do think that is quite a long time for a pizza & a pasta dish, I understood it was a busy Friday night and was willing to wait. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was 15 minutes earlier that the anticipated 1hr. & 45 min. wait time but wanted to go in to pay. When I was greeted by the hostess, I said "I am here early for my take out order but wanted to come in and pay." When the hostess went back to the kitchen, all I could hear was the staff in the back complaining about me - "Liz is early, why did she come early, we told her 7:15pm and it's only 7pm, she's not getting her food early" etc. I was appalled that they were speaking that loudly/poorly about a customer, especially when I didn't ask for my food early or anything of that matter. I ignored the comments because the hostess was friendly. I paid and she told me it would be 15 more minutes - totally fine, as I KNEW what the expected order time was. So I went back in after that time to get my food. When the hostess went back to the kitchen this time, I could hear the staff again - "Is she really here for her food 1 minute after the scheduled pick up time?" etc. At this point, I'm like...."what am I doing wrong??" I came in to pay early and then picked up my food at the time YOU told me to? Again, I never said anything about the time/wait/anything!! Finally, I get my food and take it home to eat. The food was truly not good which is the first time I've experienced less than good food at TPC. My usual favorite dish, Penne Pink Leek, was like sludge in the container. The sauce had barely any flavor and was so thin. The ratio of sauce/pasta was not good, there was so much sauce that the pasta was swimming in it. I'm so confused because there was hardly any pasta in the container. I had never ordered the flat bread before but wanted to try it - it is literally just baked dough with a side of marinara sauce to dip. The only "saving grace" of this order was the Tomato Pie Pizza. It was pretty good. I am truly saddened by this experience. I have no idea what I did that was causing the staff to be so angry but I can honestly say, I won't be returning any time soon because of that treatment.

The star of the show here (in my opinion) is the outdoor patio in North Park, the BYOB option, and of course the pizza. We got the pepperoni and was pleasantly surprised. They were severely understaffed on the day we were there, but our waitress did the best she could (which was great) to accommodate a full table. **IMPORTANT NOTE: CASH ONLY!!!!!***

I've been here a few times now. While the hours are few and the menu is a bit sparse, everything there is quality. It's a small family owned business that has been around for many years and you can see why when you go. Since they're only open for a few hours, the restaurant is usually pretty full. The food is fresh and there are healthy options, like a beet salad and their healthy version of beans and greens with kale and chickpeas. The pizza, pasta, and salads are all good. I haven't gotten anything I didn't like yet. As I said, the food is very good, but don't expect extras. Like parmesan cheese on your pasta? Nope, not gonna get it. They don't accept credit cards, but have an ATM inside. They don't have alcohol, but allow you to bring your own and don't charge a corking fee. If you're drinking wine, you may want to bring your own wine glasses, too, unless you don't mind possibly drinking out of a regular glass.

I have been coming here since 2012 and it has always had the same freshness and quality of food through the years. Rico is the most incredible restaurant owner I've ever met. A great man through and through. Combine the excellent food with the excellent culture he's created and you have Tomato Pie Cafe. Everything that a restaurant should be.

Pizza was absolutely amazing, best around Pittsburgh. A bit expensive, but can be a nice treat once in a while. Heads up it's cash only, but they have an ATM inside

We ordered takeout. Customer Service was great. They did remind us this is cash only, which is a bummer but understandable. Pizza - even after we got the pie home, it was hot and crispy. The flavors were really good The only slight knock was the sauce. There was sauce but not much and flavorless. I understand why many folks love this place. If I lived in the neighborhood, I would certainly put it in my rotation of places to get pizza.

Easily the best pizza in Pittsburgh. Crust is delicious. The big name pizza joints in the area should take a lesson from these guys.

Even though it was late we were greeted with exceptional customer service and were seated at a table. Our waiter, Remi with an I and not a Y was absolutely fabulous. He made great suggestions and the food did not disappoint. I ordered the 16 inch pepperoni with bacon. My daughter ordered the pepperoni roll and my wife ordered the meatballs and 2 Bianca slices. My wife's name is also Bianca so a double bonus. Our food came out about 15 minutes later and everything was piping hot. To my surprise the pepperoni came with the real bacon strips on top and not your average bacon bits. The sourdough is top notch as well. I ate 6 of the 8 slices while my daughter ate two along with her pepperoni roll. My daughter enjoyed her roll but did wish it had more cheese. My wife enjoyed her meatballs. They give you 4 and are a decent size. She was only able to eat 3. The Bianca slice is a healthy thick slice. Overall, we enjoyed our time at Driftwood. The service was OUTSTANDING (Remi). The food was good. We ended up staying 20 minutes past closing and didn't notice any change in customer service. This place is definitely worth a shot.

I cannot say it is the best pizza I have had because different styles are all amazing. This is a unique style and I love it. The sauce was amazing, the ricotta cheese was so delicious and their meatballs were tremendous. What I loved was the crust - it had some chew and some tug; there was a little bit of char on the outside and the bottom. The meatballs were delicious and that sauce! The vodka sauce was perfect. I would have thought I would have missed the standard cheese on a pizza but the ricotta was super good. I placed my order on their website and it was easy; I was able to pay using my Apple Pay, which was a plus. We arrived and it was ready but we stood talking to the men in the shop and they were so kind. They asked us questions about us when they learned we had, recently, moved here. It's on a dilapidated brick road that you essentially have to drive up at a crawl speed to prevent your car from rattling a part, and there's rarely parking. HOWEVER, somehow, this adds to the charm. The journey makes the reward that much better, I suppose. When you enter the pizzeria, it feels like how a pizzeria should. It's small and noisy, and the smells are overpowering. The staff is too busy for small talk. They're making dough (see what I did there?). I love it. The sauce is sweet, which isn't how I typically want a pizza sauce to taste, but it's also what makes their pizza so unique. You won't find another pizza that tastes like this. We were told there would be a wait, but our pizza was ready right when they said it would be. The staff was also extremely friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Parking was a little tricky because of the location, but it was definitely worth it! The standout feature of this pizza for me was the flavor of the cheese (especially when paired with onions) that combination was easily my favorite part. They use a very generous, thick layer of cheese, which creates a rich and indulgent pizza. The cheese is quite oily and can slide off the crust, so personally the amount of cheese and oil was a little heavier than my usual preference. However, the chewy crust holds up well to the toppings, and there was still something really addictive about the overall flavor and texture of that cheese. One thing that surprised me was how good it was the next day when eaten cold. I actually prefer this pizza cold. The cheese and onions complemented each other even more, and the pizza felt a little less oily while allowing the flavors to shine even more. Overall, this is definitely a top-tier pizza place in the area. If you enjoy a flavorful, cheesy pizza with a great chewy crust, I would absolutely recommend giving it a try!
