I ordered for pick up on the phone, it was a bit tricky. I picked up my order so I saw the interior of the place. It was clean, open, and straightforward. The staff isn't too pleasant, but I don't mean that in a bad way. The food itself was good, I got a lemon chicken. It was expensive, but good. I found it interesting that they don't out their white sauce on the side (esp for a take out order) and on top of that, they charge for white sauce itself. I don't see myself wanting to stop by because I'm in the area.

Ali Baba's Kitchen is a Middle Eastern restaurant that opened in Hamden, Connecticut in 2014. It was founded by husband and wife Pakistani immigrants Jamshed and Sobia Khalid. Jamshed worked in the fishing industry as a young man, but dreamed of working in the restaurant business. He came to the United States in 1989 and worked for a vending machine business. He finally entered the food industry in 2000 when he started "Mughali Foods": a food cart that prepared Indian and Pakistani food. In 2003, Jamshed became the owner of Noor Mahal, an Indian restaurant in Orange, but continued to run the food cart. He sold the restaurant three years later to focus exclusively on the food cart operation. He later dubbed it "Ali Baba's Fusion" and shifted the menu to halal Middle Eastern cuisine. At one point, Jamshed even had six Ali Baba food carts operating around New Haven. The Kalids opened a brick & mortar location in Hamden in 2014. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the couple cut down their food cart division to a single cart and put most of the focus on the brick & mortar location which was rebranded as "Ali Baba's Kitchen". The menu was also augmented to focus on healthier food options. A second location opened in North Haven in 2025. My wife and I recently sampled Ali Baba's delicious cuisine for the first time. Although I had heard several great things about them for a few years, I never got around to stopping in. While my wife was recovering from a minor surgical procedure at Yale-New Haven Hospital, I ventured to nearby Cedar Street in search of a cheap lunch. Located adjacent to the hospital, the street features a menagerie of food carts that are often visited by hospital visitors and staff. When I saw (and smelled) Ali Baba's food cart, my decision had been made. I ordered the "Mixed Combo" (grilled beef gyro and lemon chicken strips, sautéed onions, rice) and it was phenomenal. A week later, once my wife was home, I decided to head to the brick & mortar location to get takeout. Once again I ordered the "Mixed Combo", my wife ordered the "Side Dishers Bowl" (chicken biryani with ginger chicken and falafel topped with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, black olives, pickled onions, tamarind sauce, ABK sauce), and we shared sides of "Samosas" (with tamarind sauce and chana masala) and "Hummus" (with pita bread pieces). We think that the food at Ali Baba's is sensational and we plan to order from them again and again! We look forward to trying out the new location in North Haven because it's just a five minute drive from home!

I was lucky enough to attend an event to honor the beautiful makeover and rebrand of their restaurant. The inside is absolutely stunning. I can't get over how good it looks! The workers and owners are so sweet. The family is wonderful and kind. This is most definitely a family business you would want to support! The hummus is one of the few I will get out because it is done so well! The pita just adds to the beauty of the hummus. The falafel is perfection. Flavorful and perfectly crispy. The rice bowls are delicious from the base to the toppings. I love the lemon chicken is one of my favorite things! I always try to grab a roti roll too! They are so unique and have 860 Kombucha served right in tap! It's so freaking good. I couldn't decide between the chai and and butterfly pea. They were all incredible. This is definitely an easy pick up spot or a place to go and have lunch.

A hidden gem in Connecticut! Ali Baba's Kitchen is serving some of the most delicious Middle Eastern food and I have seriously been craving it since my last visit. 10/10 recommend the hummus with fresh pita bread chips and lemon chicken in a build your own bowl or gyro - just incredible! The interior was just recently renovated as well, and it is beautiful. The ambiance in the room is very bright and welcoming, and the staff is some of the most kind people I have ever met. They also serve Kombucha on tap from 860 Kombucha - locally brewed in Connecticut. It was my first time trying and it is so tasty. It does not taste as vinegar-y as the ones you find in the store. Very refreshing and clean.

I really wanted to hype up all the 5 star reviews but my experience was not good. I read the reviews how this was the best fast Middle Eastern food in state and it's far from that accolade. I stood in front of rhe register with no line for 5 minutes before someone reluctantly came because it was starting to get awkward. I ordered the lemon chicken bowl and they charged me for extra feta cheese which I didn't order and wasn't on my bowl. The service, as I previously stated, was ineffective. I really wanted the food to make up for everything else. It didn't. The food was subpar at best. I'm trying to understand why they put Canned black olives in the food? Not a good overall experience. I would not drive out of my way to eat here. Maybe if you're local

If you enjoy the flavors of Indian food as well as one of those quick service, hot chicken restaurants you probably would enjoy Hot Murga. The chicken sandwich comes in five spice levels from no heat to super hot. I got the standard hot, and it has some kick, but it wasn't overpowering. Then again I enjoy spicy food. I also ordered their spiced mac & cheese. Again, not spicy at all, but flavorful. Also a good portion as I have leftovers for later. I had my food delivered, but this establishment is close to the Yale campus and street parking can be a bit tricky on Howe St. and around Broadway. I've been inside of the space once when it was a different restaurant some years ago, it's not a large space, but I'm pretty sure comfortable if you decided to dine in. If you ever find yourselves at a crossroad between wanting Chick-fil-A and Indian food, this would be a great alternative.

Honestly, I didn't think the Murga Sandwich itself had too much flavor - the fry was good and the chicken was juicy & crispy, it was just a lacking seasoning and even "hot" was not super spicy. The spice itself also tasted very one dimensional - just spicy, with no seasoning. Overall, I was a bit disappointed by the sandwich itself, but would be interested in trying some of their other sauces. The Badmaash Mac & Cheese was the redeeming item of the meal though - this is basically a Mac & Cheese, covered in tikka sauce & their spicy sauce, and topped with fried chicken. It's definitely a unique flavor, and I think the tikka masala sauce went really well with the cheesy mac texture. Definitely seems like the kind of late night out comfort craving, because it is super heavy. p.s. - pro tip, the sandwich itself is $12 but the sliders are $6 and definitely larger than half of a sandwich (probably closer to 2/3rds). So I'd get 2 sliders for $12 instead of a sandwich.

My only regret and disappointment is that it's been open for seven years and this is the first time I've discovered this wonderful find in the heart of New Haven. I have been looking to come to this place for sometime, but you do need to do reservations for a Saturday night. I didn't want two weeks earlier through Resy. Full disclosure, I get a credit from American Express as part of their partnership with Resy and this is one of the locations that you can obtain that benefit from. We arrived shortly before our reservation time and waited in line as two other groups were turned away as they were all booked up for dinner until much later in the evening. Once inside, I understood as it is not a large dining area. The motive is very Indian forward with images of transportation themes from India, including bicycles on the ceiling above the tables. To start with, the drinks were some of the most flavorful options I have had in some time all with a very traditional Indian twist. I am not big on coconut or tequila, but my wife loved her coconut tequila drink. I thought the Manhattan was a big hit as the date balanced out the flavors perfectly. Even the cold drink, my daughter got reminded me of getting the same back in India. I personally was not a big fan of the mango lassi. My son got but he loved it. It was a bit thick for my taste. With regards to the food options, this reminded me of being in Manak Chok in India. For those that don't know, that is an area in western India known for its street foods and late night dining. The smells and tastes of the food would fit right in there. We started with the Dahi puri. This was a big hit for the entire family. You get six items in the order and this is a great place to start, especially if you like the balance of the street food. The Chaat Dog was also a big hit. We got the option with Lamb covered in chaat. The role was toasted perfectly and the balance of the flavors really hit well. The entire family enjoyed the chicken stuffed naan with the side of the sauce. I will admit it had a bit of a kick, so be careful for those who are not looking for spice forward foods. I have always been a big fan of Chole Bhature (chick peas and puffed whole wheat fried bread). The one here was nearly perfect as served. I was saying to my wife, that it could only be made better with a little bit of raw onion on top. As luck would have it, the waitress overheard my comment and next thing you know, we had a side of chopped onions and lime, the perfect topping for this dish. With regards to the biryani, it was flavorful, though it has never been my favorite thing. It comes with a side of raita as well. Again, that is not something I really enjoy. However, all three of my family enjoyed this immensely, and the serving was so generous, we had a decent amount of leftovers after our meal. We finished the night with some mango kulfi. It was too large scoops as you can see by the picture. This was the perfect sharing dessert for the four of us to conclude our meal. As noted above, our waitress was super attentive and very quick to bring out the dishes and drinks throughout our dinner. I will note that the price point is also great for New Haven restaurants as the complete meal with drinks for all and a dessert came out to $120 before tax and tip. This is definitely a place I would strongly recommend for any in the area. If you're not close by, book a reservation before you come down so it's not to miss out on this amazing experience. It is definitely worth a try if you want a traditional Indian street food experience. They do also have options like more traditional Punjabi style restaurants on the menu, but we focused more so on the street food options during our first visit. I will update further as I experience this place again which I expect to happen in the very near future.
