Came here on a Friday and it was dead. The front area looks like a pizzeria while the back is collection of misshaped pillow and benches for hookah. First off food, we didn't touch the pizza because we came for the kebabs. We got a chicken and lamb kebab wrap. Nothing amazing. Just your typical meat lettuce and tomato. The wrapped was toasted to the point where the lettuce was limp and didn't have a crunch while the meat was decent there was no sauce to bring it all together. Got Syrian tea which was pretty much any black tea out there. Great job for marketing something boring to get a couple dollars out of me. Next to the hookah. Not a lot of flavors that typically are found elsewhere. Average set up, got you ready and practically left you to your own devices. No tongs to turn the coals or anything. They have a TV in the back that kept us there while we smoked an orange and mint blend while sitting on couches and benches with burn marks straight out of a college apartment. I will have to say that the back rooms leading up the bathroom was straight out of a horror movie. They explained that they were doing construction back there but if someone was waiting to grab me back there no one would hear me scream. I love it here, it's a great place to come and chill after a long day, and the food is awesome. Pizza is great, garlic knots are amazing, but the falafel wrap is by far my favorite! They have a nice selection of sheesha flavors (watermelon and mint is a great combination) and the staff has always been very friendly. Mediterranea serves the best falafel in New Haven. Of this I have no doubt. For one thing, I watched them prepare my falafel pita ($3.50); the guy did it with such care and precision that I felt almost guilty---he was working way too hard for an item that costs less than $4. The ingredients are high quality. They use a wholewheat pita wrap (a massive improvement over white flour anything) which adds a robust taste to the consumed whole; the falafel pieces themselves were crisp, full of herbs and just plain delicious. The tahini sauce is thick and rich and actually tastes like sesames, not like watery sesame residue (which is the case at other places in town, like Mamoun's and Kasbah). Tomatoes and a variety of lettuce (maybe even some spinach) added to the taste. This is the type of place that would do well to cater more to vegans, like me. If they had some mock chicken wraps, or maybe Daiya vegan cheese to go with their pizzas, I'd be back every day. Similarly, if Mediterranea were open later (it's only open till midnight Monday-Thursday, and it's closed on Sundays) I'd be there all the time. As it stands, I am excited to have found decent falafel in New Haven; Mamoun's, Kasbah and Aladdin are all decent, but mediocre compared to the taste, value and quality offered by Mediterranea. read more

I used to go to Mediterranea all the time when they were still on Whitney, but after they moved, it was too far out of my way. I finally took the time to get down there for a late lunch. I picked up a falafel combo, which is basically two pita, some falafel, some tihini, baba ghanoush, hummus and a salad. The place was empty when I went in, but this was at 2:30 on a Saturday, so take that into account. It only took 5-10 minutes for them to make my food, so a totally reasonable wait time, considering it's pretty much made fresh. I took the order to go, but while I waited I was at least looking around a bit. They have several tables and booths in the front of the store, and another area in the back, but I didn't see how much. The food was all good, peppery salad with some mint thrown in. The baba ghanoush was a little smokey, but the falafel were cooked just as I remembered them, crispy shell and chewy inside. Let me say, I've been coming here for years mostly for the hookah. Last month, I purchased a Yelp deal and went to use it on a weeknight. I ordered both food and hookah (for a guest and I) and the total was close to $40. I showed the lady working the Yelp deal on an iPad. She shook her head and said no. I said "Excuse me?". She said she didn't know what it was and that the owner would have to be there. Regardless, I paid the total and stayed because I do like this place. The lady seemed to be the only customer service/cook working. She brought out our food and we had to ask for water several times. Later she came over and gave me cash, because apparently she had also overcharged me. She seemed very frazzled and confused. I was extremely disappointed that I wasted my money on this Yelp deal if I can't even redeem it. Also on this particular night, the hookah attendants were not on their game. Nice place to enjoy a hookah that happens to have surprisingly good Mediterranean food as well. Obviously I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's sensitive to being around smoke, but otherwise, it's worth checking out. They have a decent selection of shisha flavors and the prices are reasonable. Their back room, where much of the hookah smoking takes place, is an experience unto itself, with tons of cushions piled haphazardly, minimal lighting, blaring pop music in what I presume is Arabic, and (if you're lucky!) a belly dancer. I have been going here religiously for some time not because of the quality of the place, just mainly because it is conveniently located! The hookah is very expensive $21.19 usually and if you are there Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights they charge $25 per hookah, one hookah per 3 people. I guess they do this because they know they are the only hookah spot in the area. If you go during the weekdays the staff is polite and courteous however after it gets busy the staff gets a major attitude. The front of this place has restaurant seating while the back is a wall cushion seating with low tables. Food is realllllly great but again very expensive. The drinks are a total rip off so I suggest bringing your own cans of soda. Try the lamb wrap, my favorite. Also, parking is not easy as it is street parking. read more

Somehow, I managed to go almost 22 years without having proper falafel. I'd only had it in my college dining hall where, after spitting a dry beige lump of the stuff out into my napkin, I looked up at my friends and proclaimed, "That can't be it." So, on a trip to New Haven with three of my friends to see The Hold Steady at Toad's Place (I'll review Toad's Place shortly), we decided to grab some Middle Eastern food and a hookah. Mediterranea was located within reasonable walking distance of our parking spot in Yale, so off we went. Upon walking in, we were confused. Where's the lounge? Ohhh, it's down that creepy hallway. It does smell of delicious shisha, though. I ran to the bathroom before ordering, and used what has to be the worst bathroom in New Haven. Who punches a door in an establishment that doesn't even serve alcohol? The lounge was dim and smoky and coolly decorated, with benches and pillows conducive to serious lounging. First came the hookah (I think we got mango?), which had a nice full flavor and really got going full-force when someone came by to throw on a second coal. Then came a hummus plate with plenty of oil and tomato and cucumber, along with fresh pita. We couldn't get enough! Then came the meals. My falafel pita was PERFECTION. The falafel was tender and flavorful, crispy on the outside but smooth on the inside, surrounded by some kind of creamy dressing and fresh lettuce. Threw some hummus on that bad boy and OOF! I had trouble putting the thing down long enough to drag a lungful from that magical hookah that was lasting longer than expected. My friends got pizza slices after their meals, which they said were good. Everyone got baklava, which was unlike any I'd had before; much softer and richer. I think makers of baklava tend to focus so much on making it sickly sweet with honey that they forget there are other elements, too; Mediterranea works with all of these elements and makes a perfect pastry. My only real complaints are that a) the whole place does feel a little sketchy, what with the weird location of the bathroom next to where they apparently throw full trash bags, etc., and b) this place should REALLY have some kind of a liquor license. All that was missing from my meal was a pale, crisp beer. read more

Would not recommend Medirerranea on Saturday nights. It gets packed and feels super divey, but it is great on weekdays and Sundays. A much calmer vibe where you can kick back and study or talk and play cards with friends. More my style. I really enjoyed our fruit-top hookah (grapefruit head with blue mist and mint is my go-to!) and thought the service was friendly. When you walk in it looks like it's just going to be a little take out place, but you walk down a little hallway and that's where the lounge area is. It's just some cushioned seating with low tables, it served it's purpose well enough but I've definitely been in hookah lounges with more comfortable seating. We brought a few bottles of wine, and we split the foul mudammas and the chicken kebab combo. None of us have ever had foul mudammas before and we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was! It was so fresh and flavorful, without a doubt the best thing that we ate. The hummus and baba ghanoush were great as well, and the lemony dressing on the salad was amazing. Pita was fresh and warm, and they gave us a ton. As far as the Yelp deal goes, the woman that took our order had no idea what it was, but she called the owner and he just had her deduct $20 from the bill.
