Delightful restaurant! Beautiful decor with a tasteful menu. We are so happy to hear there was a new chef with a fresh take on classic favorites that came highly recommend by four separate wine makers. Starters for our group included bread with corn and scallions baked into it, calamari with a light panko breading and a small amount of jalapeño heat and the cheese platter consisting of four well balanced cheeses. After experiencing such delightful offerings we ordered dinner. Scallops where perfect, bacon wrapped meatloaf was fun and flavorful, and the lamb shank was tender and wonderfully refreshing with the herbs atop. Absolutely delightful! Overall good food, nice selection of cocktails, and great selection of wine and beer. The food is fresh and I have never had a bad meal here. It has an upscale bistro-bar atmosphere along with both outdoor/patio, bar, and indoor table seating. I have been dining at Alchemy for close to 10 years, while the menu (and ownership of the restaurant) has changed over the years, the menu does not seem to change very often, which is both good and bad. If you are local, and eat out in Murphys a couple times a week, the menu here can seem like the same old-thing. As a longtime diner here, I am glad that they kept some of the core menu items, such as the Gold Nugget bread - I do not typically eat bread, but I will make an exception for the Alchemy Gold Nugget bread. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant for a nice and relaxing lunch or dinner with good food and atmosphere. read more

Enjoyed calamari and Mac and cheese for the appetizer. For the entrees; meatloaf, and two orders of the American Wagyu steaks. Meatloaf was very good. Both orders of the steak were cooked well but severely under seasoned along with the sides. Service was average, but was charged an automatic 20% gratuity for having a party of 7; 3 of which were under 5 years old. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Was very surprised to walk in with a party of 7 at 6pm on a Saturday evening. Was my first time dining at this restaurant but will be my last. Overall, the food and service was very average with above average prices. Best complimentary bread I have EVER had. This is freshly baked bread topped with plenty of butter and garlic and herbs as well as a sprinkling of corn kernels. Yes, you read right, corn kernels. And all of it was buttery and crisp and delicious. I could make a meal out of a loaf of this stuff alone. The only regret I have is not asking for more to go with my bowl of clam chowder. :) Service was absolutely fantastic. The server promptly brought us menus for lunch, drinks on tap, as well their extensive drinks. She also listed off the specials without prompting. She brought us out water (including several without ice) and refilled our drinks without prompting several times. I quite enjoyed my clam chowder and side of garlic basil french fries. The clam chowder was obviously freshly made and had the unusual ingredients of artichokes and corn in addition to the usual potatoes, bacon, and clam. Prices were very reasonable as well, especially given the generous portion sizes. I'm definitely bookmarking Alchemy for future visits. Alchemy used to be our favorite place to eat in Murphy's, sadly it's lacking in recent times. A group of 6 stoped in the Saturday after Thanksgiving while camping in Angels Camp. The service was spot on, we enjoyed our server who was very accommodating and witty. The food was very subpar, I had the Banh mi which is a vegetarian sandwich that comes with toasted tofu, I asked if I could get meat on it and our waitress said yes and recommended a rotisserie chicken meat they had, so I went with that. When the sandwich came the first thing I noticed was that the bread was toasted the second thing was that the pickled vegetables that were on it didn't appear to be pickled together. There was pickled red onion, and pickled jalapeños that obviously came out of separate jars as you would buy at the store, and the carrot slivers weren't even pickled, just fresh out of the bag. The chicken was very dry and tasteless. Another in our party got the Mahi Mahi club, and he said the Mahi was very dry and overcooked. Another person in our party got the chicken Caesar's salad and her chicken was dry and tasteless. My wife ordered her favorite item there which is the wedge salad, they had piled on sun dried tomatoes instead of the fresh diced they used to put on and it was missing the croutons they used to put on it. Everyone of us that had a sandwich that came with fries (4 of the 6) the fries were cold when our plates were brought to the table. Another observation we made, this place used to be packed with customers, even at lunch time. There were so many open tables when we were there at 12:30 and not crowded at all. We spent a lot of our hard earned money on very sub par food. One of the couples in our group were first timers here and we had all talked it up, we all had to apologize afterwards to them. First stop for refreshments after a day of snowboarding up in Bear Valley. Love this town and the little shops and restaurants. Alchemy was just as I expected, a nice place for a meal and drinks. We ordered the calamarie and regular fries to fill in the gap between hunger and dinner. It was betted than the average fried calamarie and the ketchup taste like homemade. This place is always one of our go to places to eat after spending some time in Murphy's. Each time we come we always get Bobbi. She's so cute and fun to chit chat with! I was eager to try this place after reading reviews on Yelp. We came in at 5:45 for an early dinner since me and my boyfriend were starving. It wasn't busy, but we had made a reservation regardless. We sat on the patio where we had live music which was great! The singer Matt sung classic country songs with a few other types mixed in. We really enjoyed him! We ordered two appetizers; the wedge salad and the nachos. The wedge salad was unreal. They have a unique dressing they make in house which has wine in it. I could drink it with a spoon! Also the lettuce was crunchy and fresh and the bacon was thick and crumbly. Everything you want out of a wedge salad. The nachos were massive! I mean you could easily eat that for dinner and be content. Lots of cheese and toppings on these nachos. The salsa tasted homemade and fire roasted. I enjoyed them, but would probably not order them again since they weren't really "special" For dinner we got the ribs and the meatloaf. The ribs had a delicious sticky sweet sauce with a shredded broccoli or cabbage (not sure) salad on the side. I really enjoyed the ribs but found the fries that also came with them to be a bit too salty. The meatloaf was hearty and thick. It was even wrapped in bacon! We enjoyed the meatloaf, but personally I like a bit of a greaser, more crumbly meatloaf. Last, we somehow had room for dessert and ordered the brownie sundae. It lasted all of two seconds at the table! The double rainbow ice cream was perfect, the brownie was ooey and gooey with chunks of chocolate chips and the whipped cream was even homemade! Let me start by saying I can not remember a meal In my 50 years of life that i have ever said... "this is the best meal from start to finish in my life". Well.... Today I have said it. It all started with a Whiskey drink on the menu that sounded so odd I had to ask the waitress "what is this"? It's a drink created here with some of the most amazing combinations in a whiskey drink.... Rye whiskey, Pinot noir, chocolate bitters and citrus.... The first Sip was odd but then the notes came through so clear it raised my curiosity for another drink.... Wow. Cool drink that I have never tasted and I loved it. We then ordered calamari with Jalapeños! With a sauce that was so perfect.... Looking at the menu for the main course I was torn.... Then the waitress helped with my Decision of fried chicken with an Asian glaze!! Wow!!! Not fried chicken exactly but it was .... You have to come and try for yourself..... so, so amazing. Looking at the desert menu it was no contest that I went for the butter pecan sundae. My wife had salmon and she said, "I want to lick the plate." All in all.... Honestly the best meal from drinks to desert I have ever had. Pair that with a friendly bartender and amazing waitress that made you smile it was a great night!!!!! We tried to get earlier reservations for this place once we got into town but due to being short on staff and there being a huge concert in the area that night, we ended up claiming one of their last dining times for the evening. However, if definitely did not disappoint one bit. The mushroom risotto and burrata that my husband and I split were absolute perfections. Our waitress was phenomenal throughout the meal and took good care of everyone in their slightly inebriated states after a few hours of tastings. Its sad that the lowest rate is one star. This racist place shouldn't be allowed to exist. We were a big group of 15. Came from the parking behind and immediately from the al fresco dining side i saw 2 vacant tables that can seat 6 each. Inside, were some tables which was good for 4 and a maybe 2 and 6. We arrived at 2pm, the racist place closes at 3. We asked if we can just sit at different tables, they gave an unbelievable alibi that if we do that, we'd have different waiters (why not?), we told them if we just wait, they said no since they will close at 3. I can go on and write an anti Michelin review about this place. My family was able to eat here once but the experience was forgettable. Anyway, i would strongly recommend that the owners (if they don't know and if they're not racist) that they do something about this. Id surely go back and check. Im from the Philippines and just in for a short vacation but i surely hope this review will go a long way. Ill see your place again soon. Hopefully with a different name, different staff (well trained), or perhaps different owners. Enjoy! If you go to Murphys, go to Grounds instead. The menu here changes with the season. Some of the drinks on the menu were already out of season and replaced. Main Street is a cute quaint street that is relatively hidden if you aren't looking for it. I came here after a morning at Big Trees. We were seated right away when we came for a late lunch at around 2pm. We ordered the Calamari, lamb chops and Ribs Calamari: delicious! My absolute favorite. The sauce was perfect and the jalapeños were a great kick, but not tooooo much of a deadly kick. I'd like the plate. Lamb chops: not my favorite. Small plate paired with green beans. The meat by the bone was rare not how I like it. Ribs: very traditional American ribs. Meat fell off the bone and sauce was finger-licking. It hit the spot. Overall, I might return since menu changes but would also like to try other restaurants in the area. read more

In this age of difficult service, it's hard to write some reviews. Three stars is not bad... The reason our meal was mediocre was because of the service. If the front can't execute a high-end kitchen's vision, the whole thing suffers. The salad we ordered never came to our table. You want to order appetizers, but they are NOT an option when you sit for 40 minutes waiting for your first drink to arrive. We WANT to like their food. We had the crab mac-n-cheese, scallops, flat iron steak, and calamari last night for dinner. With a waitress that was having many problems, the food just could not hit the right quality. The food that came to our table was too long under the warmer. You could tell it had sit at the kitchen as the med-rate steak came out past medium and with a hard finish. The five scallops was "warm-ish" at best and the crab cheese pasta with augratin top should have been served scalding hot. It was barely hot. After sitting and waiting for follow-up, we skipped coffee/dessert because, "why stay when the service can't keep up?" We would have probably had a great sweet item, but our group just could not chance after all the mis-steps. As the saying goes, why this good money after bad? The problem is that when you spend $$$ at a white cloth restaurant, you just want more from Alchemy. You expect more from the food when you spend that kind of money. But, in my opinion Alchemy had problems before the food even had a chance. A three star is not bad, and I am not ripping the place. I am just reviewing that when the front misses the mark to serve a meal, the best anything can be is a three star. And for an expensive restaurant like Alchemy, it's just not worth it. read more

I came here a few months ago for brunch and it was pretty good once I decided what I wanted from the menus. I returned with some friends recently and didn't have the same experience. There were only 3 tables seated for brunch and each table had to send food back for hair/fibers on food, toast that was painful to eat, and please don't get me started on the chilequiles. I stopped in here yesterday(Saturday) around 2:15 to grab a late lunch with a group of 7. We asked to be seated outside. They didn't have a table ready but after about a minute they had us setup. They mentioned that they closed at 3 so they were great to still seat us and squeeze in our lunch orders. I really struggled with the menu. There were several things that looked really good but ultimately I settled on the burger and it was delicious! I smacked on some calamari that someone else ordered which was also really good. Had zero complains from everyone at the table. They had a smaller beer selection but offered some stuff that I had never had before which was actually really good as well. I've been here several times over the years, and it's always been a really good experience, although they fell a bit short of expectations this past visit. Service is always really good, but the fried calamari was over cooked and really greasy. Definitely not up to their normal standards. The Risotto was absolutely fabulous. We found it really strange that they don't offer access to their WiFi network. We were told that it's only for employees. I have to say that I can't recall any restaurant not offering access to their WiFi network. I just have to say that the greeting, the service, the food and the general warm atmosphere with other diners were a really special event.
