I had an absolutely lovely time at Hovey Winery and I have no doubt that you will two. For starters, the set up is fabulous. Outside surrounding the space you'll find picnic tables and other seating scattered about. The day I visited it was a bit chilly and they even had blankets placed around to help keep us warm. Such a nice touch that went a long way. I didn't spend much time inside except for when I went to the bathroom, but it was nice and cozy, too. This place is family owned and operated, and of course, everyone is extremely knowledgeable about their wine, where it comes from, and all that stuff. My friends and I got flights, so we could try a little bit of everything. Each new wine our waitress poured came with a back story and I loved it. All of the wine we tried was great and I can't remember exactly what they were, but my favorites were the white wines, I know that. While they don't have food, we were welcome to bring food from outside so we grabbed a few pizzas from down the street to munch on while we were there. I'm not from the area, but I do visit every so often and I can totally see myself returning whenever that day comes. read more

My daughter and I stopped here on a Monday afternoon and we were the only guests at that time. There were two (1 in training) and it was a great presentation. The trainer really knew the brand she was selling and gave us food pairing suggestions with the wines we chose. We ended buying 4 out of the 5 wines we tasted and both $15 tastings fees were waived. A friend used to organize wine trips for our group. One of those trips was to Murphys. My friend got tired of the organizational work so I took over. I decided our next trip would be to go back to Murphys but I needed to research which wineries would be good (such a hard task). To that end, I went to Murphys with a list of potential wineries to include in the trip. Hovey was last on my list due to logistics. We arrived at Hoveys around 4:10pm. When we entered the building we were told to take a seat outdoors and someone would be with us shortly. After waiting 20 minutes, I went back in to ask about the delay. At that point it was 4:30pm. We were told they were no longer serving anyone because it was close to closing. This is literally their explanation (two servers serving this one). "A tasting takes 45 minutes". We're closing at 6pm. We don't have time to serve you." According to my math, they were 1 1/2 hours from closing. Yeah right. Of note: There are apparently two businesses on the property. The other business is a brewery. While we were waiting outside, someone sat down with a beer at the table next to us. There were approximately 5 other people at the table who were drinking wine. The server came over and told the beer person she was not allowed to sit there with her beer. Bottom line: This winery is not customer service oriented. Not only did they lose our immediate business, they lost out on my group event. To be fair, one of the servers mentioned they were short handed. However, all they had to do was politely and immediately tell us that they weren't able to serve us. Making us wait 20 minutes and then receiving a BS explanation is ridiculous. BTW We had a very pleasant experience at the winery next door, Milliare. Despite our 4:40pm arrival and a 5pm closing they were extremely pleasant and very helpful with information about the group visit. The staff at all the other wineries were also very pleasant. read more

I love everything about this winery! First off, they have the outdoor tastings with social distancing seating, AMAZING wines, beer tasting area and they serve food (sandwiches, small plates, etc). Fortunately we were able to get in without a reservation on this busy Saturday, the friendly host cleaned off our table and got us situated. The grounds are really nice with picnic tables, umbrellas, lots of shade and even little wicker sofas. They've done a really great job adapting to these Covid times. Wine tasting is $15 per person which is kind of high from the last time I was here but they probably need to make up some deficit after lockdown. Anyway, the four of us did a wine tasting flight of 5 different wines plus a few tastes of their special ones. When I do wine tasting, it's very rare that I end up liking all of the wines but I seriously loved every single wine that Hovey had. My favorites were both end of the spectrum...a light criso viognier and their petite Syrah. Both were like summer and winter in my mouth! We ended up buying the viognier since it still feels like summer! Our hostess was great and explained the taste and background on each tasting, she was very knowledgeable and friendly. Murphy's is about an hour and a half from home but I might consider doing a membership here because I loved both their whites and reds which is rare. We all left feeling a little happier than when we got there! I will most definitely be back! read more

We had a wonderful, safe tasting experience at Hovey! The wines here are excellent, and the service was great, too. My husband and I each did a tasting and really enjoyed all the wines. Our favorites were the Viognier, Chardonnay, Zin, and Cinsaut (a chilled red!). The outdoor picnic table tasting area was beautiful, pleasant, and felt safe during this time of Covid. We decided to stop here for some wine tasting on our way out of Murphys. We were drawn this this place mainly because it had a really cute outdoor set up with string lights and barrel tables. Because it was outside and of the large outdoor space that it was in, it was very easy to socially distance from other groups wine tasting. The ladies running the tasting were very friendly and sociable. Masks are required when going in. The person who comes around and pours is always wearing a mask. The pricing on the tasting is unclear, so make sure to clarify. It ended up being $30 for the both of us to taste, if you buy a bottle that fee is actually waived. read more

Nice place to sample. Cost is $15 but it is waived if you purchase two bottles of wine. They were out of some of the flight selections so I did not get the full experience. We love this little garden spot in the middle of downtown Murphys. The staff are friendly and helpful and the wine is delicious. So much so that we joined the club and have been having cases delivered ever since! I'd much rather go visit them for pickups because they're just that lovely! I recommend bringing a picnic lunch, getting there pretty early to get a seat in the shade and buying a bottle or two to enjoy while you're there. While the Hovey Winery tasting room has only recently opened, Chuck Hovey has been making wine for years. He began making wines over 20 years ago for Stevenot Winery. For those familiar with Murphys, the new Hovey tasting room is located on Main Street in the former Twisted Oak tasting room. The tasting room is quite spacious and features a long wine bar along with several tables and chairs for guests. There is a $5.00 tasting fee for the wines on the list. The fee is waived if you purchase wine or if you are a wine club member. My absolute favorite wine is the 2009 Tempranillo. This wine won the gold medal at the 2011 Tempranillos al Mundo international wine competition held in New York this past November. This was a huge honor and recognition for a winery from Calaveras County. There were only two gold medals awarded to wineries in the United States from more than 500 entries from around the world. The Hovey 2009 Barbera recently won a double gold and took the sweepstakes as Best Red at the Wine Vineyard & Winery Management's 2012 U.S. National Wine Competition. I think it is wonderful that wines from Calaveras County are being recognized and honored as there are some very good wineries and wines in the region. The tasting room staff was very friendly and eager to answer any questions about the wines and the winery. If you have a chance, I highly recommend that you visit the Hovey Winery tasting room on your next wine tasting excursion to Murphys. read more

A step back in time with tree lined streets filled with shops, antique stores & beautiful wines! Sorry Napa, I'll be going back to Murphy's & Hovey! Love their Chardonnay!!! Tempranillo is excellent as well! Went home with a case of each. Hovey has this huge lawn out front with picnic tables & shade trees. This place is so gorgeous! The grassy yard is perfect for enjoying a glass of wine. We bought a bottle and sat on the picnic tables and enjoyed ourselves. I know it says no outside food, but we brought some cheese and meat and was able to eat it on the picnic tables. The wine here is pretty tasty as well, we really enjoyed the red blend. Let's be honest here, and no, I am not a Napa wine snob: even though I appreciate the sprawl of wine tasting rooms in Murphys, I must say that their wines are on the young, rough, and "chewy" side. Hovey's wines are a perfect example of that trend. It almost feels like the tasting rooms are there just for the business opportunity of new tourists coming to town with nothing else to do but walk around the town's Main Street. Having said that, even though my group was not a fan of their wines, they do have one or two that would make for a fantastic, relaxing time on the lawn in front of their building. Hoveys probably has the best ambience of all the wineries in Murphys. Take note of their open spaces, especially if you have kids that need to be entertained or have space to play while you are getting your wine on. The staff was attentive and added great color commentary to every pour. My suggestion is to skip the taste, or have only one person in your group take it, and buy a bottle of cold white or rose wine that you can enjoy outside with your friends. They will give you your bottles in this cute little inflatable ice chest, and you will be all set to enjoy a great summer day outdoors. read more

We came in here after trying a yummy white at Murphys Pourhouse. I must say I was super surprised. I've been to Murphys a good couple of times and somehow never found my way to Hovey. And I am sad for the me of the past. She really missed out because Hovey is awesome. The whites were crisp and delicious, the rose will be the perfect "summertime evening by the grill" wine, the reds were sumptuous and unique.
