Came in the other day during their COVID-19 transition. They had everyone sit in different tables outside as they came by to pour wines. The space was relaxing and the weather was perfect that day to be outside despite being in the middle of June (78 degrees). Our host Craig was very nice and welcoming. We didn't care for any of the white wines because we're more about reds but we tasted them anyway. They have a great Malbec here, which we purchased a bottle of after the tasting. read more

Love this place! It was built in the mid 1800s and still has original windows and floor in the tasting room. It was a nice and cozy place to taste some good wine. It's actually the home of Albert Michelson, who became the first person to accurately measure the speed of light and won a Nobel Prize for Science! I'd recommend stopping by this place and I'll be going back. read more

Hovey Winery should be one of your top destinations when visiting Murphy's. Their upscale country tasting room is built in an old house with a great indoor and outdoor experience. They are located along Main Street in the middle of downtown Murphys. Parking is available on the street, but busier times may require using a public lot. The tasting menu includes some unique and higher end wines showcasing the region. My palette has never really taken to Calaveras wines, but I was intrigued by both the variety and styles offered in this stylish place. Service is phenomenal with fun and lively staff who enjoy showing off the wine. You can linger in the large grassy yard with picnic tables or on the small porch. They also share the building with the Pour House for beer, but you cannot cross the line between the two. The wine is on the higher end for most Murphys wineries, but they offer a nice experience for the area. Hovey is in the top tier of the area and worth a visit or three. read more

Hovey winery is among the best that Calaveras County has to offer: not only because the winemaker, Chuck H., is an experienced and knowledgeable hand at locating top vineyards and picking great fruit, but also because the tasting room and its loyal staff make visiting such a fun and rewarding experience. The tasting room shares a historic house with Murphys Pour House and includes a public garden area with picnic tables, persimmon trees, and a fluffy grass lawn where kids, dogs, and just about everyone else on Main Street feels welcome. Inside the tasting room, a modest $5 fee gets you 5 pours of Hovey wine, including on occasion a sparkling wine sourced from Rack & Riddle in Sonoma County. Hovey is best known for two things: one of the best Chardonnays in all of the Sierra Foothills, and a beautiful Calaveras County Tempranillo that wins you over to this appealing Iberian varietal by showcasing its potential for producing great California wines on par with Zinfandel, Cabernet, Sangiovese, or Barbera. This is not to say that Hovey's other wines, like his top-notch Viognier, are not equally good. They are. This has a lot to do with long-standing relationships that Chuck H. forged with area vineyards over the course of 20+ years of making wine for other wineries, and then for himself. While a recent health scare slowed him down and made him more reliant on his support staff to oversee the wine tasting duties, Hovey remains a vibrant and exciting place. The festive holiday decor during the Christmas season only adds to the overall friendly vibe here, which invitess you to taste, to judge, to evaluate, and if you like, to buy. I have been a club member for several years now. After the founder, Chuck passed away, I wondered if the wines would be any different. However they were not, the wines are still as good. My favorite reds are Hovey's tempranillo and barbera along with the petite sirah! Every time I visit, the staff are always courteous and outgoing. My wife and I used Hovey for our rehearsal dinner and it was amazing. Susan and Magan really went above and beyond for us, helping create runners for the tables and center pieces. The lawn is great and plenty of room for all 40 of us that were there for it. They helped set everything up and were amazing hosts and great hospitality. When in Murphys, CA make sure to check out this stellar tasting room housed in a historic cottage right on the main drag. Kelly treated us like kings and queens on our Saturday evening at Hovey... she even stayed open a little later than normal I do believe!! The wine was spectacular... all locally produced and grown, all very limited quanity... our faves were the Barbara, Zin and the dessert wine... but all were stellar! We joined the wine club because of Kelly and those tasty wines. We can't wait to go back!! Murphys gets a lot of love from the Bay Area, but I don't think that many Southern Californian peeps visit this town ... do yourselves a favor and go!! The area is AWESOME!! Stopped by Hovey after another wine tasting room recommended them for their Tempranillo. Went in and there were only 2 other parties so we were greeted and served right away. Both pourers were friendly and talkative with the guests. This place is right up my alley in terms of my wine palette. Complicated whites and some bold reds. I wasn't disappointed by the Tempranillo - one of the best I've found in years! I only wish I'd come here when it was a bit warmer. Visited here for the first time between Christmas and New Years. It was very busy here and all the wineries we visited that day. I have to agree with Rob G's review below. The grounds are very nice for picnicking but the wines were not very good. Also it was very hot in the tasting room and the reds they poured were even a little warm. Its rare that I dont find one wine that I like and buy a bottle but in this case none were to my taste. Oh well there are many other choices in the area. read more

This winery is definitely my favorite in Murphys. Heather was working that day and she is a true pro. I told her that if she could sell me on the wine that I would get a membership. Of course, she did a great job and I bought a membership. The membership itself is great. My in-laws go up to Murphys every few weeks, so Hovey allows them to pick up the wine for me. The wine is very affordable and delicious. My favorite wine is the tempranillo. I have yet to find a tempranillo that up to par with Hovey. For a great overall experience with a great tasting wine, I suggest you stop by Hovey. read more

We visited Hovey for my Bachelorette Party. It was a small tasting room, but well decorated and modern. One of the party hostesses had called ahead to let them know we were coming in. There were two employees working, they were both very polite and also did not charge me for my tasting, as I was the Bride. The wine was okay, nothing amazing, but not bad either. I'm giving a 3 star because of a couple of things I noticed with the service- The woman pouring for us was sloppy, not only did she spill wine on me and not notice, but she was eating behind the counter! Straight eating a burrito right in front of customers! She did not seem like she was focused on anything, which lead me to believe she either tasted a little too much herself, or she just did not care about her job. Although I greatly enjoyed many wines during our recent visit to Murphys, Hovey made the top of my list. There were two winery that were available on the Friday evening Passport event that required three "tastes" and Hovey was one of them. To be sure that the wine was wonderful when I had a clean pallet, we returned to the tasting room the following day and the wine was just outstanding. We were also able to taste several other varieties that were not available at the Friday event and loved every one. We only purchased wine from 3 wineries during this visit and Hovey was one of them. For the most robust garlic oil I have ever tasted, and including the world famous Gilroy garlic festival, Hovey's garlic pepper infused oil is superb! If you believe business cannot be conducted with garlic breath, we cannot do business! I could vaporize vampires with a burp of this oil. SO good, and a must try for true garlic lovers! We had the Welcome party for our wedding at Hovey and it was magical. I'm from Calaveras County, now living in Southern California, and married a German so there were guests coming from all over the world. I knew Hovey would be the picturesque place to welcome our guests to my hometown and it didn't disappoint, the guests LOVED it. Susan and her crew did a fantastic job, everyone loved her wine choices. We had live music from Jill and Beacon that fit the evening perfectly. Hovey's tasting room in a historic home on Main Street in Murphys is a very friendly place to try great wine. The adjacent park and tree-shaded gardens offer numerous outdoor seating options, even in winter (if the afternoon sunshine has warmed the area sufficiently), and the interior space is small but well designed to accommodate about a dozen or more guests comfortably. Tastings are simple affairs: $5 fee waived with one bottle purchased; a straightforward tasting flight with 5 pours of wine, all but the sparkling wine sourced locally from a wide range of top quality Sierra Foothills vineyards. Hovey's wines are produced and barrel arged in Murphys in an off-site facility shared with another top notch Murphys winery, Newsome-Harlow. The nice thing here is that, unlike a number of other wine tasting rooms on Main Street, Hovey offers great white as well as red wines to choose from. On my visit, I sampled a very good sparkling Blanc de Noir wine (Sonoma County), a Viognier, and a Chardonnay, in addition to three interesting reds: a Cinsault, a Tempranillo, and a Zinfandel. All were nicely made and distinctive, with good barrel aging and refined winemaking technique. The Tempranillo was a real surprise, and worth the visit, but you also should take note of how well the whites are made, too. I got a bottle of Viognier, while my companion chose the Tempranillo, and we both were very satisfied with our mutual decisions. The staff we interacted with were generous, knowledgable, and genuinely kind, in that unaffected sort of way that suggests it is not an act, but a real and authentic human behavior. I like that. Not all tasting rooms are run with such fondness, dedication, and decency, and that - along with the excellent wine - makes a visit to Hovey something you might consider on your next visit to Murphys. Absolutely my favorite place to spend a day tasting wine!! Murphy's is great and I always loved walking the town and tasting wines at all 4 of our membership wineries. But hands down, Hovey is the best. I tend to prefer whites and my husband prefers reds, but we have found the perfect place to go that we both love tasting. The employees are always friendly and talk about the wines. Of all the places I miss, this is the place I miss the most about living in CA. We love the wines so much that we continue our club membership and even pay to ship this wine to FL. Hovey wines are some of my favorites, This guy has been making excelent wines for various other establishemnts for some time so when I found out that he had his own tasting room, I was stoked. I really enjoy the wines, atmosphere, and people. As far as the comment below, I'm a Mexican who always comes in wering a Radiers shirt and basball cap. I pretty much fit every stereo type you could think of and I have NEVER had a bad experience nor have I ever felt like I've ever been treated diffently there. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of places that have their snobbery issues, as for me, I've never experienced that at Hoveys. If your going to throw out the race card, please back it up with specific facts. When you make emotionaly driven racial assumptions simply because you didnt get treated the way you wanted, you tend to loose credability. Housed in an historic home of a Noble prize winning scientist from the late 1800's in the middle of Murphys Main Street, Hovey wines are complex and delicious. We especially enjoyed their Chardonnay while chatting with the knowledgeable server. The grounds and gardens are beautiful. Definitely make a stop and buy a bottle. read more
