Upping my rating to 5 stars. Stopped by on a rainy day no one was there. the server was Florence and she was delightful and seemed glad to have the company. It was a fantastic tasting we tasted a lot of different wines and bought several. The quality is good here better than most Murphys wineries and we have tasted quite a few however you will pay a premium they are bit pricey as well. I was tempted to join the wine club but we belong to so many already and I didn't want to commit to quarterly pickups if they had a semi annual option I probably would have joined. We always enjoy stopping by Val Du Vino when we are in Murphy's. The atmosphere is so relaxing & the wine is phenomenal. They have a beautiful tasting room, it's so cozy & intimate, and they have a great outdoor patio with lots of seating, & awesome views. We usually come with a good size group & all the kids. It's right at the end of Main Street, away from some of the crazy hustle and bustle of downtown Murphy's, but still easily walkable, which is great! We stopped at the art and wine boutique to do tasting flights. It was closer than the winery if you're walking downtown. The service was great, very friendly and helpful staff. Don't let the exterior fool you. It totally belies what you'll find inside. The only fully operating winery in Murphys. Right at the end of the "strip." Once inside, you can see the facility where the magic happens through glass floor to ceiling windows. Even when the equipment was not operating, it was still kind of dazzling. The glassware is Titanium. Very nice touch. The space is a balanced mix of rustic & contemporary. Check out the ceiling. Check out the bar. Beautifully made. Take a seat on a leather chair, or a stool at the hi-top. I could easily sink in a chair w a glass of one of their good reds, Netflix on my iPad, & forget I'm not at home. The wine. The reds are strong. I didn't make a purchase, because this was the first stop on the way to several tastings, & I knew I would be back another day. The wine hostess was thoroughly knowledgeable, easy to talk with, & infectiously enthusiastic. No hovering, & no pressure. An impressive operation, along w a great space. 4 stars. read more

Happened to come by here with friends that are members, after visiting another friend up the hill. In the beginning, it was awkward, the lady working -- did not believe they weren't members. She looked up the incorrect name. However, Jeanine (I believe that's her name) was working and she's the owner. What a sweet lady. She was very friendly. Tasted her wine, and they have good selections. My favorite was the Zin and Dragon (which we drank back at the ranch). Also both the only white wine they had on the list, which I forgot the name of it. But I really enjoyed it. This is located at the end of the street. If you were to google "boutique winery" and "Calaveras County," chances are extremely good that Val du Vino would pop up. Housed in a hundred-year old Gold Country farmhouse that has been lavishly, if understatedly, refurbished by the current owners, the tasting room and wine-making facilities are ever-so slightly located off the beaten path of Main Street Murphys - close enough for one to walk or drive, but far enough away to be discreet. Beautifully labeled bottles rest in the middle of a stunning stained concrete tasting bar, which projects solidity and purpose, while weathered ceiling beams and an intricately carved wooden entrance door evoke rusticity without sacrificing elegance in the process. Close your eyes, hum a French tune, and you are in Burgundy or Provence or some other location amidst the foothills of distant, snow-covered peaks and dark, dense forests. Winemaking is overseen by the owners, who divide tasting room duties with several dedicated friendly staff. They pay premium prices to acquire fruit from some of Calaveras County's most dependable and respected vineyards, and they use traditional techniques and barrel aging for most of their wines, which are released in limited quantities on a seasonal basis, so you never know what will be available when you visit. Club members also have the option of purchasing futures to secure rights to new vintages when they are released, and on our visit in late December, the majority of the tasters in the room were members, not out-of-town visitors. Because VdV isn't on Main Street in a prominent visual location, like Newsome-Harlow, Hovey, or Milliaire, you have to seek it out. Outside, there are red Adirondack chairs and a gravel parking lot with room for about half a dozen vehicles. Inside, the bar easily can accommodate 10-15 tasters or more, who can expect 5 samples (for $5, waived with bottle purchase) of the wines on offer at the moment. On our visit, we were impressed by a 2014 Calaveras County Viognier ($20 range), done in stainless steel rather than oak barrel, with crisper, lighter notes than some of the other wineries in Murphys who tend to make their Viognier in a heavier, richer style that mimics Calfornian Chardonnay. The other favorite was a surprise, and a rare treat: a 2014 Calaveras County Pinot Noir, (upper $30 range) very limited production, that was aromatic and delicious, and definitely a wine of considerable distinction. Other 2014 vintage reds, Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and a Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc blend, were quite good but tasted young and might need additional cellaring to reach their full potential. Because the wines here are popular and produced at an artisinal scale, there isn't a lot to go around, so you are less likely to find reserve or library wines here than at places like Hatcher, where 2011 and 2012 wines were still being poured. With many Calaveras County reds in particular, 3-5 years rather than 2 often is better in terms of overall fruit-acid-tannin balance, but this isn't always easy to do given limited storage capacity at smaller wineries like VdV. Overall, the impression made here is remarkable: it looks like a boutique winery, and it feels like one, too. And most important of all, it smells and tastes in the glass like one. Highly recommended when you are in town for a wine tasting! Ask if they have complimentary tasting cards for Allegorie, an art-and-wine gallery in town next to Murphys Hotel whose wine are made here, at VdV. read more

Once upon a time there was a winery located in a 100 year old+ barn. The decor could be described as rustic elegance. The wines were delicious, especially the late harvest syrah. The name of this winery was Vina Moda. Fast forward several years and a few months and you will find that Vina Moda is no more. The owners (comprised of two couples, one of which included the winemaker) parted ways amicably. The winemaker and his wife kept the "Vina Moda" name and may one day reopen a tasting room under that name. Fortunately for us, Jeannine and Johnathan continue to create some of the finest wine in the Calaveras wine country under the new label of Val du Vino. The wines may appear a little different on the outside (new labels), but the smooth flavor remains. And that is how Val du Vino came to be. The End :) read more

This review is not for the tasting room, which, by the way is great, but it's for the winery itself. This is the only working winery on main street. All the other places are just tasting rooms which either have a working winery somewhere else or their wines are made by some one else. The Val du Vino winemaker, Johnathon, is always happy to give people a tour of the winery. It's an awesome sight to see and many times he will even do a barrel sample. He explains the process of making wine so that we laymen will have a better understanding of how what we really enjoy drinking is made. This is a must do as you will not be disappointed with anything. The wines are great but the tasting room is a delight to the eye and comfortable. The pours were perfect and could revisit wines you liked and purchasing just one bottle to wave your tasting fee is easy. So many fine wines to taste and choose to take some home with you. Wow! My girlfriends and I visited this winery today. We were seated by a lovely hostess that was kind, friendly and welcoming. However, it all goes down hill from there. We had the displeasure of meeting theGerman server (pretty sure she was one of the owners) who was totally irritated that we made a reservation for 5 people and only did 2 tastings and 2 others had a glass of wine, the 5th was our designated driver. It didn't stop there. When she brought out the tastings in a very creative display one of our friends wanted to take a picture to post to social media and promote the small wineries of Murphys. The server scolded our friend and told her to put her phone away while she explained all the different wines. When she got to the Rose she mentioned that it's not just a colored white wine. Another friend questioned it and she told our friend that she doesn't understand Rose's and was totally condescending. All of the wines we tasted, we did not love so we decided to settle up and pay for our tastings/glasses. The server was absolutely offended and then told us that we don't know how to do math. Ummm...I'm sorry but if we didn't love your wine, why would we spend anymore money on it? On the positive side, they did have a great piece of property. read more

We were given a "5 free tastings" card for Val du Vino from another winery after buying several bottles, so my group of 5 headed here today. Unfortunately, the moment we arrived we were treated like we came in to rob the place. We informed the server who greeted us that we had this voucher for free tasting. An elder woman, the owner as she informed us, immediately swooped in and told us "no, we don't do more than 2 or 3 free tastings." Then she proceeded to ask us how many bottles we purchased at the first winery. I said "a few" (it was 2 and a piece of art) and the woman said "ok well that's not normal and I'm going to call to verify" and then walked out, dialing a phone. Wtf?? We have a voucher for free tastings and you are interrogating us and making sure we're not lying? For reasons I can't explain now that I'm in a more rational state of mind, we actually stayed here after this and did one tasting each for a total of 5. At the end, when the nice server (no problems with her, she was wonderful but the experience was so awk after the owner encounter) told us we owed her for the 3 tastings I asked how that could be when we had the voucher. She informed us that the voucher was only valid for tastings up to bottles of wine purchased at both properties. Nowhere on the voucher did it say that, and it's a know courtesy in this area to waive a tasting fee for a bottle purchased so basically this voucher was a sad waste of a tree's life. We paid, but I will absolutely never go back and support an establishment when the owner would treat customers so horribly and I will make sure to tell any friends or family to never frequent this establishment. By the way, the owner never came back to address us after calling the other winery. Appalling. Next time work your issues out with your partner business in your private time and do not use your customers as pawns. Wish I could get my time and money back. read more

Was recommended to go here by Allegorie. The owner was very rude. She thought we were trying to scam them because we had a voucher for free tastings, which we received from Allegorie. They did not fully honor the free tasting voucher, so that was awkward and killed our happy vibe. But the young woman serving us was very nice, so one star for that. read more

We just held my daughter's wedding here. The wine is great. Jessica and Owen who are normally in the tasting room were wonderful in helping with all the details and planning. The venue is beautiful and the villa on the property was a great place for the wedding party to get ready. However, if you are planning an event here, I would suggest getting EVERYTHING in writing, no matter how small. That way you can (hopefully) avoid any confusion regarding additional, undisclosed fees or how you expect the venue to look on the day of your event (broken pallets, a tractor, etc., that were to be removed from the wedding and reception areas were not). Unfortunately, these issues resulted in an upsetting end-of-event interaction with the owner which almost ruined (for me) an otherwise perfect day. read more

A nice little winery at the edge of Murphy's cute little downtown. We visited on a busy Saturday and found the staff to be welcoming and friendly. The wine maker even took a small group of us on a quick tour through the barrel room and talked us through the wine making process. Tastings are $5 per person but the fee is waived if you buy a bottle of wine. Another couple we met mentioned something about having a Groupon for tasting. Something worth checking out. This is one of the best wineries in Murphys. The wines are absolutely delicious! I have a hard time picking a favorite, but I'd have to say their Grenache is up there on the list. Coming into town via the Murphys Grade Rd, this is the first of many tasting rooms you'll encounter on "the strip". The building is a perfect example of Shabby Chic done right. There's plenty of space in the tasting room not only at the bar but also in the periphery where there are some smaller seating areas. Service is extremely friendly -- the winemaker loves to talk about his wines (and has been known to offer barrel tastings on occasion as well....we tried to scam a barrel tasting of their Pinot this weekend but he'd just done a top-off so no go). Speaking of Pinot, if you can get your hands on it, do. so And then go on a scavenger hunt to try and find another winery in Murphys that offers one. ;D BTW, VdV also runs the art-and-winery Allegorie a couple blocks further up Main St so if you're a club member of Allegorie, you'll also use those benefits at Val du Vino and vice-versa. read more

Sweet owners that helped us taste & educate us on their wine. Wine was nice. I bought a port & my parents bought their Petite Syrah, both were good. We visited this wonderful winery last Friday on a recommendation from our kids and thankful we went. The new owners could not have been more friendly and appreciative of us visiting. I think the owner Debbie may be my wife Victoria's long lost sister. We returned to the winery on Saturday with our kids and grandkids (20+ adults and kids) and again they were very accommodating for our group. This was the best winery of the three I tried in Murphys. Typically I avoid places that make port. It's best to leave that to the amigos in the Douro that limit barreling to two years. So this place was happy surprise when I enjoyed the tasting. I still didn't like their port, but found the wines were generally well balanced. It showed that grapes from Calaveras and Madera yield good wine in the right hands. For those who want a little more atmosphere, this location is also a functioning winery - unlike most of the places in Murphys that are strictly boxy tasting rooms. Some online maps incorrectly pinpoint the location. It is located where French Gulch and Main St. intersect on the western edge of town. read more

Over labor day they had a special deal where you could get a bottle of red wine called Artiste for $2 if you purchase 3 other bottles. Done! Everything about Val du Vino is authentic, unpretentious, and unbelievably good! My first visit was during a Murphys scouting trip for wedding venues. We had been to some nice wineries in the area, but our trip to Val du Vino knocked them all right out of the running. My husband and I have really enjoyed every aspect of our visits there and we are fans for life. The wine: REALLY good reds. Sophistication and variety to satisfy the snobbiest red wine snob, but friendly to neophytes too. The Three Cousins was the gateway for my previously-non-red-drinking parents to a whole new world. All the better that it's made right on the premises and you get a personal tour through the tasting experience from the winemaker himself (Jonathan) or one of the other super knowledgeable and friendly folks who work there. The wineclub: Love the wine, get a discount on it (and wedding venue expenses), why not join the wine club? What could be better? The winemaker's dinners. Jeannine is an incredible chef and knows exactly what to pair with her husband's wines. Adventurous, delicious foods and generous pours make for an amazing evening. The villa: Beautifully decorated house with a professional-grade kitchen tucked amongst the vines; a very short walk from Murphys main street and steps from the tasting room. Very spacious, comfortable, and well tended. We were married under the gorgeous oak just up the hill and it made a fantastic back-drop. The winery/tasting room: Great setting for wine tasting, and it turned out to be a great reception setting as well. We had ~100 guests seated on the crush pad with a Cajun band on the lawn. It was cozy, but not crowded, and everything flowed really well. Jonathan, Jeannine, and Owen were all very welcoming and celebrating with us. Overall, Val du Vino is great for a short visit or for a longer stay and the people there take care of you for your most important moments or just for a great wine tasting afternoon. read more

They have a cute vacation rental right next door (3 couples would fit nicely) and this is the only place that made wine on site. It's right at the end of Murphys so don't miss it!
