You can choose sourdough, coffee cake, or scone, definitely get the coffee cake. They have outdoor seating that's what makes this place perfectly dog-friendly (they always bring my pup water). The staff has been the same for years, consistently kind and welcoming. Parking tip: easy metered parking in the mornings on weekdays, or you can find street parking in the nearby residential area if you don't mind a short walk. We had brunch here on Sunday and luckily didn't have to wait for a table since we chose to sit at the counter. A great view because we were able to see the open kitchen right in front of us. Ambiance: 4/5 Small and causal diner that's pretty loud inside but it gives a homey feel lol. Outside seating is available too. Service: 5/5 Wonderful! Everyone was incredibly nice, friendly, and efficient. Definitely worth giving a tip just because of their service. Food: 4/5 Mediterranean scramble - Scrambled eggs with a variety of veggies tasted great. We chose a blueberry scone with this one and thought that was tasty too. Alana's combo - I wished my scrambled eggs had more seasoning because it was pretty bland. Potatoes were a bit burnt but not bitter so that was acceptable. Also prefer coffee cake to bread. As for the company's coming, I think the order needed to be slightly larger to justify the price, even a few more potatoes would have made it better. A popular brunch spot on the weekends! My friend and I came around 10:30 AM and we were lucky to be seated immediately. Tables are crowded together, giving the space a cute neighborhood feel. The staff are super friendly and warm, making all customers feel at home. I was very surprised that coffee cake and scones were offered as options for bread on the menu -- you could really have a decadent breakfast here! I got the California Scramble and an orange juice. Juice was good, no pulp. The scramble was good too, lots of veggies and very filling. They gave me lots of toast and plenty of crispy breakfast potatoes, so I left very full and content. Pretty popular brunch spot in Burlingame. Do expect some type of wait on the weekends. The shop is quite narrow, so be ready to be elbow to elbow with your neighbors. They do have some tables out on the sidewalk. Not the greatest spot if you have a huge group, 4 would be your comfortable max. Prices are a bit high for what you get. You do get full, just don't expect much leftovers. Their weekend menu is limited on the savory stuff like soups and some of the sandwiches. I've tried their omelettes, quiche, and salads before. Their quiches are amazing. You get a side of fruits or salad on weekends, there is a soup option on weekdays. The flavors do change from time to time, I had a pear and bleu cheese one, can't say no to one of my favorite pairings. If you're very desperate, they do sell the whole pie to bake at home. My friend took my sister and I on a Sunday morning for brunch- we'd heard great things about the pancakes, and they did not disappoint! We got a stack of the swedish oatmeal pancakes with lingonberries to share- the texture was really interesting with the oatmeal and they were perfectly not too sweet. I got the farmer's garden with the famous coffee cake, which was a huge chunk that I ended up taking home but it was delicious- it tasted more like a banana bread. I get that it's in Burlingame, but it's still a casual breakfast spot--nothing fancy, and the food doesn't exactly wow. Kiddo ordered a $21 chicken sandwich. The chicken was unseasoned and came on focaccia that seemed like it gave up halfway through baking. The best part? The cucumber, tomato, and onion on the side with watery tzatziki. That says a lot. I went with the quiche I used to like, but for $18.20, the portion was tiny--more like a side than a main. My husband had a scramble that didn't impress, and he kept saying Jack's does it way better (and for less than $22). The total? Over $77 before tip. My fiancée and I were looking up brunch spots and have passed by Alana's in the past. We were in Burlingame again so we decided to try it out. Short wait on a Sunday afternoon, maybe about 10 minutes for a counter seat. This place is packed with what seems like plenty of regulars and a mom & pop staff/vibe. The small charm of that wore off with the food though because, nothing really blew us away. What Alana's is known for is the Swedish Oatmeal Pancake. Great looking in pictures, but flavor wasn't there. We got it, tasted it, and were just "eh." Consistency is literally like you're eating some solid firm oatmeal. Oats and grains in each bite. Healthy feeling, I guess, but heavily needed the syrup and fruit sides with each bite. I got the Denver scramble ($21.00 btw) and it literally looked like something I could've thrown together at home. The scramble was runny with that egg liquid pooling at the bottom. Way more green onion than ham because halfway through the scramble I was just eating veggies at that point. Cheddar cheese just looked like was tossed on top, not melted or anything (could've mixed it in during cooking at least). Homefries which are served with every breakfast entrée it seems, was the only redeeming quality of our meal. Overall, we wouldn't come back. Service is fine, they treat you like family and I think a lot of people growing up with Alana's appreciate the nostalgia and comfort. From an outsider's perspective though, either prices have to come down a bit or you have to have something more enticing than the oatmeal pancakes and some potatoes. read more

I was looking for another breakfast spot to go to during my work break's and Alana's Cafe has been on my radar for a long time. Alana's Cafe has been part of downtown Burlingame since 1993 so the interior is old fashioned, but it's comfortable enough for my standards. The biggest standout is how friendly staff is and the service is great. The food to me is decent, but very pricy for what it is in my opinion. Which I can understand because of rising costs and running a business in downtown Burlingame for sure has to be pricey. In my most recent visit I ordered the Denver Scramble with Coffee Cake ($22.45 total). They have a sign stating that there is a surchage of any item that has eggs. $0.50 per egg and $0.25 per item that has egg incredients such as the coffee cake I ordered. I get it....but still the price is definitely a bit tough to justify for a Denver Scramble. The flavor and the ingredients are pretty standard. Ham, egg, pre shredded cheese, and bell peppers. The potatoes were quite overseasoned and salty to me while also being a bit too over cooked. There is an extra charge for the coffee cake, but that was the best part for me personally. The cake was soft and not too sweet. It was moist and had a lot of spices which was nice. My dad ordered the Slice of Quiche and Cup of Soup ($18.20) and he felt that was too expensive and not filling enough. The soup looked good though. Personally I liked the service here, but the value wasn't there for me especially with all the options in Burlingame. It is still worth the try for a first time though. read more

I've been here twice and each time the food and service were excellent I love a good soft egg scramble and most breakfast places mess up the order with overcooked eggs. Here, a wet scramble is wet scramble. My guests and I had the following and liked them all: Mediterranean egg scramble, Jalisco egg scramble, Swedish pancakes with real maple syrup, and quiche. My husband had a Caprese sandwich with a side of pasta salad, and he loved it. I wanted to try the coffee cake, which came with a pat of butter and a not-quite-ripe strawberry. I thought it was okay. I would like fruit and nut pancakes but they dont offer that here (or anywhere for that matter). I also had orange juice that wasnt made fresh and tasted that way. We ordered two Alana's combos, which is a pretty traditional sampler consisting of eggs, potatoes, toast, and choice of side. But they nailed all aspects of it, and the portion size was just right. But the true highlight of our order was the Swedish oatmeal pancakes. If you come here, you owe it to yourself to give these a shot. The menu itself calls them "famous" and "worth the wait" - and honestly, it's not wrong. They're large and fluffy, it's got a sweet, slightly nutty flavor, and a wonderful oaty texture. We ordered ours with the lingonberry compote, and it was truly the perfect complement to the delicious pancake. Top 3 pancake for sure... and that includes the chocolate chip pancakes my mom made for me growing up. Despite the crowded restaurant, my water and coffee cups were never empty once. It's pretty wild that I had never been here before because I grew up around here but I had my regular brunch places that I was loyal to. But I can totally understand why people love coming here. It's located in a nice area sitting in the park let was a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food tasted very home cooked for sure!
