Parmesan Crusted Fish
Amy K.

One of my favorite lunch spots during the work week. I work in the area, and there are not many food options within walking distance. So I am so grateful that this little cafe exists. The food is always delicious, decent portions, and the price is very reasonable. In addition to their standard menu, they have different specials each week, so there's always a variety to choose from. My favorites are the ginger scallion fish and the veggie stir fry w/ tofu and noodles. The staff are also very nice!

A tiny café in the lobby of a non-descript business building that serves the best food at value prices of any to-go café (and many restaurants). Owned by a husband and wife, the food is consistently of high quality, is served quickly and the cooked items are piping hot. They serve equally great breakfast items. The bonus is they are friendly, remember repeat customers name's and serve the food with a warm smile.

Perhaps, I should Yelp my generous friends who have given me opportunities to try foods that I'd normally not try. This one was totally unexpected as I was meeting a friend at his workplace to exchange some items. When I pulled into the parking lot, he was waiting in front of his building which is next to this location. As we exchanged bags, he handed me an extra bag, telling me that, due to our 1 pm meeting time, I didn't have lunch. Having run a morning errand in Chinatown, I actually had my meal in my office waiting; I know, what a considerate friend. When I returned to work about twenty minutes later, I took a picture of the meal and placed it in the refrigerator, knowing I'd enjoy this later in the week. He got me a patty melt with french fries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=xBKgHRzzYBs2tXc6B5FCNQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), something I haven't eaten since the Lucky Penny on Masonic closed since that's where I ate my last one. With my new education in restoring leftovers, I reheated the patty melt (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=_ptNwOBcmHV8zCRK9hoRgQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) and fries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=8pdx8l_b7kkmAe83tGeW6w&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). They were still delicious two days later and my meal was filling. I especially loved that they gave several packets of Hunt's ketchup (my childhood favorite) which paired perfectly with the fries. Thanks to my thoughtful and generous friend, I had the pleasure of enjoying this throwback meal. He mentioned their prices being reasonable and that their spaghetti was pretty good. Guess I better keep my eyes open for their weekly menu.

This place is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall. Everything here is soooo good and such a hidden gem! I always come here during lunch and it's located conveniently in a corporate building. The meals are super affordable, filling, and delicious. They come up with new lunch specials weekly and upload their menu on Facebook. I recommend using their online website where you can pre-pay to pick up.

I miss working right next door to Yay Café. I'd walk there every single day for breakfast and coffee or lunch. I did this for 3 years and you're probably thinking, what a loser why didn't she pack a lunch? Well tbh I'd rather eat their food everyday than whatever lame lunch I would've packed for myself. Marlo and Christine are such a dynamic duo husband and wife team. They work so well together, I swear Christine knows everyone's name -- she really does. She's so sharp, friendly, moves fast. Their food is restaurant grade type of food. Delicious spaghetti, garlic noodles, fish plates, rice plates, a spin on California rolls in a salad bowl form, burgers, sandwiches. It doesn't really have a genre per say, but if I had to pick one, I'd say it's Asian inspired/fusion? It's in a food category of its own :) They make theeee best freaking mango coconut tapioca pudding ever, but it makes a seasonal appearance. They have a Facebook page where they post their menu for the week. You can pre order it and then pick it up! Pre-pandemic, the menu would be posted in the cafe and the lunch line would go out the building to Airport Blvd. They kept track of the plates they sold and knew when they'd run out, so they'd tell you and you'd just have to get a sandwich or a salad, but those were good too! Now it's more like a pick up and go type of place with limited seating outside in the lobby area of the building. I should've honestly written this review 6 years ago, but even tho I don't go there daily, I still get food from there when on my days off and it's still delicious!

Creamy mushroom pasta. There is always one vegetarian option on their list of specials

Not sure why they are marked as closed. I have eaten there twice in the last two weeks and confirmed they are open for breakfast

The best place to grab lunch on the peninsula. The service and the food are the best and affordable. My favorite is their banh mi sandwich.

I came in around 9am and they were already sold out of some items, but I did manage to get my hands on one of their famous croissants! I ended up getting the Pistachio Raspberry Croissant and Chocolate Chip Cookie. Both pastries are PHENOMENAL. The Bay Area truly does have a fantastic pastry (especially croissant) scene, but Backhaus is definitely up there. I loved how well the flavors came through in both, and the textures were great. They were also baked perfectly. I definitely want to try more of their offerings in the future! In general, this place well deserves the hype.

The chocolate croissant was just as good, featuring the perfect balance of sweet and slightly bitter chocolate wrapped in layers of buttery, flaky pastry. The café offers plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, with additional space upstairs and downstairs. The cream top is so good and has a super strong pistachio flavor. Would highly recommend the cheesecake too -- it's super light and creamy at the same time because it has multiple layers. COFFEE: 8/10 SERVICE: 8/10 AMBIANCE: 9/10 COFFEE/MATCHA: 8/10 I can definitely see why their Pistachio Einspanner is one of their signature drinks. The pistachio cream was rich and flavorful without being too sweet, and the presentation was beautiful. My only reason for giving it an 8/10 is that the drink leaned a little more toward the creamy side than the espresso, but it was still enjoyable and something I'd recommend trying. I've tried their matcha and honestly thought it was great quality!! I noticed they sell Rocky Matcha, so I wonder if this is the matcha they use as well? If you are not a fan of just matcha and milk, I recommend you ask for a sweetener to add. SERVICE: 8/10 Service is pretty straightforward, and my order came out in a reasonable amount of time. Interactions with staff were pretty quick, but everything ran smoothly. AMBIANCE: 9/10 This coffee shop is minimal, clean, and aesthetically pleasing. It has a cozy modern vibe with thoughtful decor that makes it feel like a great place to slow down, catch up with friends, or enjoy a quiet morning. They also have a nice outdoor patio if you prefer sitting outside. Seating inside is limited. Overall, I'd definitely come back. While the drinks are a bit on the pricier side, the unique menu and inviting atmosphere make it a fun spot to visit, especially if you're looking to try something different from your usual coffee order. On my next visit, I will definitely need to try more of the desserts that they also sell.

My friend ordered the Veggie Scramble and an iced Euro Latte. We both requested less sweet for our drinks. This turned out good for the Euro Latte but I had to go back and ask them to increase the sweetness for the Yema Latte. The drinks were good, nothing too mind-blowing. The Foreigner Favorite was yummy. I really liked the sausages and poached eggs. I love potatoes, and I wish these were a little bit crispier. Regardless, it was an enjoyable dish overall. It was also very filling, and I ended up taking leftovers home.

This is my first time ever going to this particular coffee shop and in all honesty I only came over…read morehere because the pastry shop I wanted to have one shot did not have any indoor seating! Nor do they have outdoor seating! Lol spatial problems?! Oh well! Anyways, this place had a number of tables inside as well as outside, and there was a younger gentleman as the cashier as a Lady barista with amazing tattoos, was assisting him!! Hee In all honesty, I was rather surprised when I was speaking to the young gentleman because he was quite honest about having not tried the pumpkin chocolate chip coffee cake. He turned to the Lady barista and she said she was quite honest and said she did not like pumpkin, but had tried it and it tasted too much like pumpkin for her. Lol I love pumpkin and don't like chocolate!! So she told me I would probably love the coffee cake!! She was right!!! It was around lunchtime, so I figured I would also get a chicken empanada, and I was so surprised when I placed my order for a regular cup of coffee, pumpkin, coffee cake, and a chicken empanada that the younger gentleman brought it right out to me at my table!! Most coffee houses I go to just yell my name or ticket number! Lol but the sincerity behind remembering who ordered which item specially, since I gave no name, gave me a feeling of special or personable gratitude feeling!! As if they were really trying to get to know each individual Customer!! As I sat and watched part of the soccer game, I noticed a number of patrons were also smiling and cheering on the game, but quietly amongst themselves at each individual table! Still polite and coffeehouse, appropriate, as I was able to do my own work at my table and enjoy my lunch! Overall, I sat here for about two hours, and I noticed how both barista and cashier were younger maybe college age people and they spoke to each individual customer!! I heard a customer greet the barista by name, Jonathan, and I missed the barista's name, but she had a number of beautiful tattoos!! I was rather surprised since they spoke to each customer with such sincerity!! There's definitely a different type of Customerservice at this adorable little shop!! This was my first time ever coming here, and I basically swung by because they said they had gluten-free items and I'm trying to be better in my own lifestyle!
