I FINALLY tried AJ's on Main! I have been seeing this place for a long time and finally we able to get there for lunch today. The patio has always looked so inviting this place has been on my list! As inviting as the patio is thought it was hot and I welcomed the opportunity to find some inside seating. Walking in the place has a great ambiance. It has an authentic roadhouse meets barbecue kind of feel to it. There are no fancy pretenses here, this place is down home real. My server, Victoria was fantastic! Once I told her it was my first visit she helped me pick a meal that would give me a good sampling of what they have going on here. I picked a two meet combo and chose Ribs and Brisket with Fried Okra. The meat was amazingly tender and moist. It was like the kind of tender everyone smoking a brisket strives to achieve. That being said, the flavoring was not my favorite brisket I have had, though I fully recognize this I strictly a matter of taste on my part and many do and are going to love it! Food is not what I consider good. Several people in our group got the 2 meat plate with pork and brisket. I honestly couldn't tell which was which from looking at it. Looked like mush. I am a Texas boy and real brisket BBQ doesn't look like that. I ordered the shrimp and it was the frozen stuff like you get from a Walmart freezer. We had a very disturbing experience here at this bar about 5 days ago. 2 men walked in and asked to switch the game over to the Aggie baseball since it was on ESPN. The owner AJ was extremely rude and told the guy that "his team was getting his ass kicked." When he called the owner out and told him he was being rude, AJ became belligerent and told him to leave the bar. The customer proceeded to flick him off and the owner AJ physically assaulted him by literally kicking him in his rear. About 12 cops showed up to this dive bar and did a full investigation. They made the determination that AJ was clearly at fault and was guilty of assault. The customer declined to press assault charges and gracefully left the bar. Rumor got around that night and most people were avoiding it like the plague. Do yourself a huge favor and spend your money elsewhere. read more

The owner is very aggressive and has no business having his own bar. We witnessed a very disturbing event on Friday night that was a complete embarrassment to the community. 2 guys walked in to watch the Aggie baseball game and sat down at one of the tables. AJ told the guy that his team was getting his ass kicked and it escalated from there. When the group left the bar the owner AJ literally assaulted the man by kicking him in his rear. 12 cops showed up and asked if he would like to press assault charges. I REALLY wanted to like this place, but it pains me to say I didn't. The environment is great, staff were friendly, but the food....was below my expectations. I ordered a 3 meat plate with a side of beans as well as an extra side of potato salad. The pulled pork was every inch short of flavorful, the sausage was okay, the beef brisket was the best thing on the plate but I still desired more from it. The sides and the BBQ sauce were by far the worst of the meal. I love small business's and I WILL be giving this place a second try to try to change my opinion of it. The food was below expectations for the price. The bbq is priced similar to a Pecan Lodge, but without the flavor, quality, and freshness. I could have sworn I was being served Lloyds packaged bbq. The fried catfish had a very odd and soggy batter, and premixed cornmeal would have been better. The wings had great seasoning, but I could tell they were frozen as the bone was chilled among with bites near the bone. At $22, for a two meat platter and one side, I honestly felt like I was being ripped off as the main plate was a $10 meal at best because of inflation. The service was excellent, and I have no complaints there. The server was attentive, friendly, and checked on us to refill drinks as necessary. They have good beers, so that's a plus! The decor and mood was fine. There were dollar bills draped on the ceiling, so that was different. The Restaraunt was clean and neat. This is a really interesting place in downtown Grapevine right next to the vintage railroad. The owner and servers are amazing and the nightlife vibe is old school bar cool. I was there midday, so it was a bit odd. We sent one drink back (iced tea). It was clearly yesterday's brew. The fried okra is probably the best I have ever had. Potato salad was quite good. I did not enjoy the catfish, but that's my fault for ordering fried food from a bbq joint. The brisket was solid but not outstanding. A "hog wing" is a fried pork rib and it was tasty. I don't think the BBQ sauce is a signature sauce, but a commercial blend. The whole thing screamed for a piece of bread or Texas Toast. I might have been happier if I had ordered a sandwich. Finally, I wasn't there at bar-thirty. The patio and front porch make for a really excellent experience. The bar appeared well stocked, but all drinks seem to be served in plastic ware . We did notice an interesting jug of pickles on the bar and were told they are vodka infused. I'm not hip enough to try that! I really can't imagine anyone making a bad review for this place. I'm not a huge fan of bbq but my boyfriend is so I told him that maybe we could try it out. I was actually so blown away because I liked EVERYTHING we had. The Cole slaw was literally the best I've ever had and had a nice spice to it. The Catfish is literally the only good place in all of Texas that I've had. I'm a big seafood person so trust me when I say this place is this best place. I was puzzled by the mixed reviews, however decided to give it a shot! Inside is small with a (dive) bar like atmosphere. BUT there's outdoor/ patio dining (on Grapevine Main Street) with a water dish for dogs (apparently dog friendly). Clean, with friendly staff. Service was very good! We shared the 4 meat plate ($20) which came with one side (we got baked beans/ loved them). More than enough for two! The sausage was spice, as I like it, the brisket was very moist (didn't need BBQ sauce) however the BBQ sauce was good! The pulled pork was also great! After we were done, AJ (the owner) stopped by to make sure all was well... and it was! He is an Air Force veteran and by the way, gives Vets a discount... additionally, he's a former Grapevine Police Officer. And a great conversationalist! All great reasons to go there! read more

For a very casual spot to sit on a patio overlooking Main Street on a nice day while eating ok food and drinking beer, you can't really go wrong. Note that the prices printed on the menu are "cash only" prices. If you pay by credit card you'll be charged more. The owner claims it's a thing now and others are doing the same. I eat out a lot in DFW and so far I've not seen anyone else do that. At a minimum it should be noted on the menu. Or better yet since I'd venture to guess the majority pay with cards, post the credit card prices and offer a nice surprise for those few that still carry cash around. read more

I do not recall the last time I ate a brisket and was disappointed. I had been lucky to have good quality barbecue in recent years. Unfortunately, that luck ended today. I chose brisket and sausage when I ordered the two-meat plate. For my side, I got the fried okra. I must have misread the menu because I had not realized the brisket was chopped. Since moving to Texas, I do not add sauce to my barbecue because it hides the flavor. Well, I came close to drowning the brisket in barbecue sauce. Because it was chopped, it made the brisket very dry. I barely ate more than several bites. Eating the brisket felt like a reluctant chore. It has a bar/restaurant vibe to it, very casual, seems like a spot for locals to swing by and grab a beer and watch the game. We ordered the Fried Okra as our appetizer and a sampler platter of different meats. You got to choose two sides and we got cole slaw and potato salad. The okra was okay, simple, very fried. None of us were fans of the cole slaw, and the potato salad was okay. The BBQ wasn't that extraordinary, the people I was with who are from Texas also agreed it wasn't great. However, the ribs were pretty good and fell off the bone. Food isn't phenomenal, but if you're in the area and want to grab a quick beer, this seems like a good local spot to do so. read more

This is a small place on Main Street. We were there on a Saturday. The bar was full but we got a table right away. Our server was exceptional. The poppers were very good with chunks of chicken wrapped in pepper and bacon. The chopped brisket on Texas Toast and fried okra were good. What we thought were going to be baked pinto beans turned out to be heated Pork N Beans that were a huge disappointment. Drinks were a bit overpriced other than the house wines. Such a big party in such a small venue! We happened in during one of the Grapevine street festivals and stayed much longer than expected due to the fun atmosphere and tasty food. The chicken poppers were super yummy (even though they didn't have much jalepeno kick) and plentiful. The chopped brisket with fries were well worth the price. Terrific BBQ, friendly staff and supports veterans! My husband and I stopped at AJ's on Main for the first time tonight. Having never been we asked questions of the staff and got great advice about how much food we were getting, which items suited our preferences, and beer selections when our first choice was tapped out. Toward the end of our meal a regular came in who is a veteran and the staff welcomed him warmly and by name. As a veteran myself it warmed my heart. Later, I asked if they offered a military discount...when the check was returned, I was surprised to see the largest discount I've ever received. As I walked over to speak to my brother in arms and his wife, we were also greeted by the owner, staff members and other Veteran friendly staffers.
