It's not trendiest ramen shop, or the fanciest, but Ajisen just seems to hit this nostalgic sweetspot in my soul. I will always default to the Pork Ramen, which features thinly sliced pieces of lean pork. The crispy edges on the meat give it a great texture, and it is the perfect size to take with a mouthful of noodles. Ajisen features a thin noodle, which I've found to be perfectly cooked with a new balance of chewy but still has a bite. The thin noodles are perfect for maximizing the amount of broth each noodle picks up. Ajisen broths tend to be more oily and salty than other places. I personally like this, but if you think it will be an issue, feel free to ask for less oil or salt. read more

My usual Ajisen Ramen location is at Warden and Steeles. Every time I visit CoCo at this plaza, I have looked longingly at Ajisen Ramen, saying quietly to myself that I need to eat here. I have ordered takeout twice from this location, both times through Skip the Dishes. My first experience was excellent. The second time was bumpy, but all okay in the end. Ajisen Ramen has promotions going on. If you get ramen or rice, you get an appetizer for free. You can choose an item from the following: - Spring roll - Edamame - Deep-fried potato cake - BBQ pork rice ball The first time, I got miso BBQ ramen. I added corn and an egg as extras. For my free appetizer, I got edamame. It is my favourite starter at any Japanese eatery. My pickup the first time was great. I waited behind a couple of folks who were looking at the menu and deciding what they wanted. The female staff member saw me and had my order ready at the table. I fetched it, thanked her, and left. I got home and chowed down. Everything was packed carefully. I had miso broth and it didn't leak out. I loved the edamame. It was done perfectly. I love a bit of salt with the perfectly steamed, protein-packed edamame. The miso BBQ ramen was delicious. I poured the miso broth into the deep recyclable noodle bowl and gingerly mixed everything. There were four small slices of BBQ ramen. If I just had the ramen as a meal, I would have been disappointed with the number of BBQ slices and would have needed to order more. However, I had edamame, so I was happy protein-wise. The ramen was perfect. It was chewy and yummy. The miso broth wasn't overly salty and was flavourful. It had the right softness and delicateness for ramen. My second order was for dinner last night. I ordered Japanese fried rice with chicken. I have been craving fried rice for a while. I got edamame again as my free appetizer. I also ordered a side of gyoza. After placing my order, I received a phone call practically immediately on my cell phone. I was on the road driving when I picked up hands-free. The woman said that she didn't have any gyoza and asked if I wanted something else, like spring rolls or takoyaki. I said that I wasn't in the mood for either. I asked what else she had. She didn't bother listing them. She then went into this weird conditional questioning path. She asked whether she should go ahead with my order minus the gyoza or if I could cancel my order. I had to explain to her that she caught me while driving. I literally pulled over on Kipling Avenue into a residential apartment parking lot to look at my Skip the Dishes app. I could not cancel the order. She had confirmed it. I let her know. I asked whether it was a best practice for her to confirm the order before checking that she actually had gyoza. She gave me an answer that I wasn't pleased with. I said that she needed to sort that out. I then said that I'd have to keep the order because I had paid and couldn't back out of it. I looked at the other apps and asked if she had the corn salad. She did. Yay! She felt bad for inconveniencing me and said that she'd throw in another app for free. She had listed edamame again. Although I love it, I wanted something different. I went with the fried potato cake. She apologized. I thanked her for her generosity and carefully pulled out of the apartment parking lot after spending a good five minutes getting this order fixed. I made it to the restaurant at 3:40 pm. I had specified my order to be ready at 3:30 pm and gave a bit of time just to be on the safe side. In total, the place had 45 minutes to get everything ready. I walked in and the woman that I had spoke to was cheerful. I said thanks, picked up my goodies, and headed home. Again, everything was carefully packed. I got a handwritten apology on my receipt. This place is good about making things right and I like that a ton. I got miso soup with my Japanese fried rice with chicken. I didn't take a photo of it. It was so good that I consumed it immediately. You get a LOT of Japanese fried rice. The chicken was tender. The green onions, onions, garlic, pork, and fried egg were so good. The fried rice hit the spot and was so flavourful. I highly recommend it. I got the deep-fried potato cake for the first time. It's small, but delicious. It came with mayo. The outside of the potato cake was crispy. The inside part was creamy mashed potatoes seasoned with green onions. It was surprisingly good. The corn salad blew me away. It's such a simple concept to have corn kernels, imitation crab, masago, and a generous amount of mayo as a starter. There were a couple of iceberg lettuce leaves at the bottom. This is a consistent ramen chain with a bigger menu variety than some other places. I ordered the kimchi pork ramen and asked for the kimchi on the side because I love kimchi but don't like it hot. The ramen was noticeably more flavourful, which can be a plus, but that meant that it was also more salty.. I was constantly thirsty the rest of the night. The kimchi was a little weird.. it had a thick paste with it that got overwhelming... I was def glad I asked for it on the side or it would have killed the broth. For a ramen place, the l was super surprised.. they probably have like 30+ ramens on the menu. Gordon Ramsey would never approve.. haha but I was all about it. I like having my choices. I remember getting to steak teppanyaki ramen, which is pretty much plain spicy ramen with a side of sizzling teppan steak. Delicious! Each bowl is probably $12-14 so pretty average. Now this is not the best ramen I've ever had, but really I can't complain. The texture of the ramen is pretty good and chewy - I wish they were thicker, just a bit. The soup is pretty rich but it does get salty. The meat they use is pretty good quality, no lie. I had the special which was filet mignon black garlic ramen - oh, you fancy huh? The filet mignon was definitely a lot tougher than I thought, probably cooked itself to well done in the soup. The black garlic soup was super good though. Perfect noodles for a cold winter's day. The soothing broth coats the mouth as you slurp up every last noodle. I added extra noodles just so that I can enjoy more of the flavour. The spicy beef ramen was good, but the chili flakes were a tad bit overpowering. The pork tan tan was delicious and broth was nice and creamy. Nothing special with presentation. Prices are pretty standard. The menu also offers quite a few appetizers and rice dishes; however, we only tried the ramen. Interior of restaurant was clean. This is our family usual go to place for ramen noodles. Our family last dine-in visit was Dec 29, 2022. In the past and our last visit, we were able to collect stamps on every bowl purchased and get a free bowl when the card was full. This bonus system had been revised at least once, you had to eat more bowls before you could get a full card of stamps. They had now get rid of this bonus system completely when I picked up takeout on Feb 13, 2023. We noticed that the portion size is very small now. Meat portion and noodles all shrink in size. I ordered extra noodle on the side which is $1.99 for my husband but found out that it was just two bites because they lined the bottom with bean sprouts in a small soup container. I love tomato soup which I always ordered my noodle with but the takeout soup tasted bland. I ended up paying $73 for 4 small bowls of noodles and a teeny tiny bit of extra noodle. Tips: next time you want to order extra noodle at any place, ask your waiter to serve separately so you know if it's worth or not. There are definitely other ramen or noodle places in Markham that have better quality and worth better value. There is other noodle place where you can get free extra noodle. Ajisen was close to work and remembered it was good, so of course I had to go there for lunch with a couple co-workers! Service was good; quick, friendly and super polite. Ajisen Ramen is sort of the McDonald's of ramen joints....it's a huge franchise started a long time ago with locations around the world and follows a given formula. But like what McDonald's is to Burger's Priest, Ajisen is to Kinton or Santosei, not in competition. Ajisen was probably one of the first ramen joints in the GTA before the ramen explosion. I remember going to the original GTA location at Warden and Steeles when it first open many years ago and now I remember why we haven't gone back. The ramen here is okay, cheap and does the job. Its definitely not authentic as the spicy broth has Sichuan peppercorns, the batter on the fried chicken was almost like sweet and sour chicken and the egg was hard boil instead of soft and runny, so can't really say it was memorable. The teppanyaki ramen was on the salty side and the ramen itself was okay but didn't stand out either. Staff was polite and efficient but they definitely wanted to close early as people were turned away 25-30 mins before closing. [Good] Consistency - I've only ever had ramen at Ajisen and it's remarkably consistent in terms of flavour even across locations. The broth flavours are rich and enjoyable. Steak - Teppanyaki steak is done nicely. The steaks come out rare on a sizzling hot plate and cook to just the right temperature. Meat is fatty enough and tender. I'd say pretty good quality and I would get again and again. Stamps - Added bonus to get free ramen. [Bad] Price - All items on the menu are jacked up now, presumably due to minimum wage increase. $11.50 for a basic tenderous pork ramen. I'm pretty sure it used to be $8.50 or something. At this price point, you might as well pay $2 more to get steak ramens. Prices are starting to close in on higher end paces like Sansotei. Cucumbers used to be $1 and now it's $3.50! [Worth it?] Borderline. I would say the higher end ramens are still worth it as the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive bowls close in on each other. After having ramens at a variety of other newly opened ramen restaurants in GTA, I decided to revisit this place again to see if there is any changes on the menu as well as the quality of the food. I came with the other two friends, so we ordered 3 different types of ramen soup base. The one I ordered is the beef plank. The taste of the soup base is very light and plain. I meant it is nothing wrong with it, and some people favouring a bit heavier taste can add some spices on the table to enhance the flavour. The taste and the quality of the beef and the noodles are at average. My friends also gave me the similar comments based on their choice. We also ordered the Japanese Deep Fried Tofu as well as the Black Pepper Beef Tenderloin. The tofu was so-so, but the beef was fairly tendering and juicy. Thus, I gave an above-average rating for the food. The customer service was pretty good. Wanted to try this place for a while based on recommendations from friends. I had higher expectations, and I have definitely eaten better ramen in Markham for the same price. We went around 11:30am and the restaurant was almost empty. We were seated quickly, and our food came very fast. I ordered the Spicy Beef Ramen (~$11). The portion size was satisfactory for the price, and the bowl was tasty. However, the broth was very, very oily and contained a lot of MSG. I've been hearing about this chain a lot and a quick search on Google revealed to me that there aren't any truly special ramen spots in Markham, so I decided to try this place out on a whim. Walking in I was greeted by a large mannequin of Ajisen's mascot, an interesting addition to the decor of this compact yet spacious restaurant. I ordered the spicy beef ramen, which was a pretty good portion for the $10 that I was paying. I found the beef to be a bit too lean but the soup and noodles were the write consistency and taste to make a good dish overall. I also tried the gyoza, which was nothing special, but as a whole I was still impressed with the experience that I had and would recommend it to those who haven't tried Ajisen yet. read more
