Wow. This place is good. Also just a warning portions are huge here. I went here in a Friday night. Wait time was about an hour and the time was around 8 pm. It's a Japanese-style restaurant. We had passed by it many times but never entered it. We finally stepped inside this restaurant tonight. We ordered the Brown Donkatsu and Donkatsu Ramen. The size of the Brown Donkatsu is super BIG! It's because the pork chop is pounded until very thin and then fried. Its breadcrumb coat is very crispy and taste good! So we are satisfied with the Brown Donkatsu. On the other hand, I'm pretty disappointed with the ramen. However, I have to say that I'm very picky at ramen because I've had so many different ramen restaurants around the world. I don't think their ramen can be called ramen...If they're called something like soup noodles, it would be more appropriate...although I still finished the whole bowl. I just had a feeling of imbalance and confusion: Is it really ramen? The portions just continue to blow me away. One serving is definitely enough for 2 people with a side of appetizer or another smaller dish. Our favourite is the carbonara, so creamy and pairs well with the deep fried crispyness of the katsu. This location also has other Japanese items so we tried the Ebi don. The rice is flavourful and very umami. I won't be ordering from them again. I ordered the pork and chicken cutlet with cabbage salad and rice from Brown Donkatsu and Ramen, and honestly, it was pretty disappointing. First, I received the pork and chicken cutlets in the same container, both sliced into pieces. That made it hard for me to distinguish which one was the pork and which one was the chicken. I ordered the combo specifically so I could compare them and figure out what I should order next time, whether the chicken only or the pork only. But because both cutlets were sliced and mixed together, I could not tell which was which, and it did not allow me to taste the difference and decide which one was better. Also, in the photo, the pork and chicken cutlets did not look sliced, but when I received them, they were sliced. So, in a way, it is deceptive advertising. The second issue is the cabbage salad. In the photo, it looked like it came with dressing. However, in my order, it was just plain cabbage with some black sesame seeds on top, which did not seem special at all. Also, the pork and chicken cutlets I received, which again I could not identify, did not taste anything special either. I noticed they have high star rating reviews, so I ordered from Brown Donkatsu expecting something really good, but honestly it was nothing special. They have a similar dish at Cyan Cafe Lounge in Richmond Hill called chicken schnitzel and beef schnitzel, which in my opinion tastes much better. I really enjoyed the beef schnitzel at Cyan Cafe Lounge. It is just that they use panko-type breadcrumbs on their katsus, which makes it crispy. Another trendy looking place that doesn't live up to expectations. The tonkatsu LOOKS really tasty because they use fresh milk bread(?) for their breading but they should have stuck with panko. Also need to salt their tonkatsu after frying. If you do end up coming here I'd advise you to get any sauce on the side if you can. Because it's milk bread it soaks up the sauce so quickly and becomes soggy and pasty immediately. Pretty unappetizing imo. As for what we got.. I got the combo sauce (cream sauce and brown sauce) pork cutlet, wife got the Nagasaki ramen and Gyoza for appetizers. Overall the portions were huge so you get some good value there. Gyozas are pretty decent flavour-wise but the skin was soggy and crispy part wasn't crispy. Decent price though. 3/5 Combo tonkatsu was ok. Only addition to the above is the cream sauce needed salt or flavour, it was generic cream sauce. Brown sauce was spicy and kind of reminds me of chalet sauce but not sour. 2/5 would have been 1/5 but they get a point for creativity I guess. Ramen I only tried the broth but it was pretty interesting. A white broth but it was spicy. Toppings were all from frozen (mussel, shrimp, squid). Wife was pretty happy with it but nothing special 3.5/5 Overall it's pretty decent value, we spent $50 with a cash discount. Went to their other location on Yonge so I also had high expectations for this location! My brother and I shared their special set A which came with fried shrimp, chicken, and fish. It also came with a side of their curry sauce and their tartar sauce which beautifully complimented the fried meat. I especially loved their tartar sauce. We got it with an extra side of rice and it was very filling - we even brought some home. I also loved their version of coleslaw. The corn was a nice addition as well but it didn't taste too fresh.
