    Pork Loin Katsu Demi-Glace
    Nimeth R.

The order took wayyy to long to arrive. My friends and I were very hungry after Halloween and wanted a grub to eat but had to wait more than 25 minutes for the food. The curry was meh as it just tasted like a thick marinara sauce drowned in cream (prolly not what it was but it was what it tasted like) and the pork was dry and not juicy at all. Ambience and staff were nice though. Overall not worth the $20+ spent on this dish.

their happy hour is a fantastic deal, $16 for pork tonkatsu with unlimited soup rice and cabbage. easy 2 meals worth of food

*Posted this on the wrong location earlier. This is the right one now. First dine-in outing since the recent lockdown and we were craving for a hearty meal of meat, veggies and perhaps some hot broth in an ambient setting. Katsu came to mind immediately, and we were met with two nearby choices: Katsuya, or Mr. Tonkatsu.  Takeout would have been good too, but one perk of dining-in at either restaurant was the unlimited refills of rice, cabbage salad, and miso soup, and that sounded really good on a cold day for two hungry people. I prefer the flaky katsu and miso soup at Katsuya but Mr.Tonkatsu seemed healthier, won by distance, and also held a nostalgic spot in my undergrad memories. We started with two cups of Japanese green tea($2 each). I like that they provided the tea bags so we had the option of refills with more hot water. For mains we got the Pork Loin Katsu with Cheese + Soba(~$19) and the Pork Tenderloin Katsu with Curry($18). The soba is a small appetizer portion and was a tad bit overcooked. The broth tasted like msg due to the seaweed and spices. I would have preferred a lighter tasting app since the mains are fried and oily meats lol. The pork and cheese katsu was less packed with meat than the pork tenderloin katsu; there was a lot of space from where the cheese was. I guess its half meat and half cheese rather than full meat stuffed with cheese? Either way it was still very meaty, albeit a bit rich. Then I tried the tenderloin..and it was oh so tender! And more flavourful than the pork loin too..which I found strange because loin is supposed to be fattier which means tastier..? Also the fact that it was drenched in curry provided more moisture and cut down on the greasiness that I would have otherwise gotten from the crust. The rice and salad portions were smaller than I had remembered. It was half the portion that I would get in a takeout container. But we weren't worried since there were free refills. My bf has a big appetite, as he scarfed down the soup, curry katsu, rice and the salad within minutes. It took me three chopsticks full to finish one portion of salad, but just one chopsticks full for him lol. Thank goodness for free refills. We checked with the server beforehand that the free refills policy was still valid, and she confirmed it. I wasn't close to finishing my meal yet so we ordered two refills of salad/soup first for him. Half of the katsu was already very filling for me and I couldn't eat any more, so he took it over. I did finish the soup and salad though, and wanted more to cleanse my palate. He also finished the two refills we had gotten earlier, so we discussed how many more to get. We didn't want to get banned or anything..just wanted to get our worth of dining in, and plus, the citrusy cabbage salad is so refreshing. So we decided to order 4 more refills. Two for me, and two more for him. We thought it would be okay since it was small portions, and the server did confirm the perk at the beginning.. but when she took our order once again and went into the back kitchen, the kitchen staff laughed at the order. Soon after, she came back with an apologetic look on her face. Apparently the policy had changed and now its limited to 1 free refill per person. I guess I don't have a poker face because I felt my face drop immediately lol. The website says 'free to refill', and not '1 free refill' (see attached). Not that we are being nitpicky about the number, but if the policy did change then it should be clearly stated. And I feel the server should have told us beforehand of this change. Also my bad for not confirming at the door. Oh well. Personally I'm pretty disappointed, especially since I don't dine out as often anymore, so restaurant dine in visits need to be worth the go. As a major foodie with stored favourites across Toronto, the service, attitude, and misinformation on this visit has left a bad taste in my mouth. This kind of bad moment is the deciding factor that I will be resorting to Katsuya for katsu cravings from now on. Before the pandemic I used to come here all the time with friends after a long exam, and it was the nostalgia that led me here this time. Feels bad that one bad moment can override a memorable place just like that. I don't appreciate the reactions of the back kitchen staff after hearing our refill order, and the rain on our parade towards the end when the server had to eat her words on the former policy. I can't help but wonder what would have happened if we had ordered two more refills the second time instead of four...would they have agreed? Did the policy really change?

Got the: - Pork Tenderloin Katsu ($17.80) - Loin Katsu Curry ($17.80) - Soba ($3) The sets each come with a miso soup, cabbage, and rice. Overall, really good! There is a difference between the loin and the tenderloin (more tender), although it is not too noticeable. The curry sauce is good as well (not too salty), although personally I preferred the original sauce that comes with the set. The soba I got as an add on for $3 - it comes hot (not cold). You also order via a QR code directly on the app.

A good place to visit and fried pork is a good choice when you miss Japanese vibe and food. Always welcoming people with Japanese tradition, ice water. It's a bit pity that they can't refill miso soup.

    Tenderloin tonkatsu

Was excited for Japanese style tonkatsu. The store is comfortable and has nice wood Japanese style interior. Although they still use QR code menu and ordering system, the staff were attentive and will also be able to take orders. I got the tenderloin tonkatsu (pork tenderloin) and takoyaki. Overall a good meal. At a decent price ratio. But some points of disappointment for me. The meat was nicely tenderized, good portion and presentation. Comes with miso soup, cabbage salad, rice and tonkatsu sauce. Was looking forward to freshly grinding my own seasame, but the sesame came sprinkled in the sauce. Miso soup was nice to have, but sadly the wakame seaweed was boiled in the soup too long, resulting in mushy strands. The katsu itself unfortunately had a soggy bottom. Maybe not quite the right frying temp or not enough resting period? There's more improvements to be made to the frying technique here. I recommend eating them upside down for better crunch experience or to order katsu curry instead. Since it will sit in sauce anyways the soggy bottom is no longer an issue. The takoyaki is the deep fried not authentic variety. Can be skipped next time.

This place is one of my new tonkatsu favourites in downtown. I normally bring out of towners to Katsuya but was exploring the Wellesley area with a friend who was adamant we get something fried for dinner. It's a Korean owned establishment with super friendly staff. The waitress came by to explain their menu and even showed us how to grind the sesame seeds to sprinkle onto our dish. The food arrived pretty quickly and was quite delicious. It's slightly cheaper or similar in pricing to Katsuya but portions are a tad smaller and the food is not quite on the same level. I would still hit this place up when I'm in the area though.

Delicious and reasonably priced! My friend and I ordered the Pork Tenderloin Katsu set which came with rice, miso soup and salad. Sesame seeds are provided in a bowl where you can grind (if you choose) and add to the Katsu sauce. Personally I couldn't tell the difference between his grinded sesame and my plain ones (or maybe we weren't doing it right haha). The service was quick and the food was hot and delicious. The tender pork was wrapped in a thin layer of batter, with just enough crisp. Would definitely recommend and return to try other items on the menu!

tldr: A solid Korean-style Tonkatsu shop. Full katsu sets (salad, soup, rice, and katsu) for good prices $15. Ample seating. Punctual service. This shop serves Korean-style katsu dishes. Korean katsu is flakier than traditional Japanese katsu. This shop is similar to Wako Donkasu in LA (for you LA yelpers). The meal sets are the go-to. Sets include cabbage salad, rice, miso soup, and katsu of your choosing. You can add curry on the side among other extras. It's not fancy, but it's good value and a solid dinner or lunch option.

Having tried other Katsu restaurants, this would probably be one of our favourites. The pork loin with cheese was very light in terms of the batter which, overall making the meal not too overwhelming to eat (considering there was also cheese inside). Plus, look how cute the tonkatsu set is?! The spicy sauces chicken thighs were also v yummy!! On another note, the service was kinda iffy - they were accommodating but not at the same time ‍ ... let's just say we had to go up to get their attention a few times (and they weren't even busy?) Would we come back? Probably, one of the better Katsu restaurants in Toronto! We ordered: Pork Loin with Cheese Katsu - Original Tonkatsu set ($14.50) & Spicy Sauced Chicken thigh ($16.50) Follow us @cindysfood (IG) for more reviews!

Pork Tenderloin Curry with white rice and miso soup.

I got the Pork Tenderloin Katsu and it was probably the crunchiest katsu I've ever had. I am usually used to having semi-soggy katsu from restaurants, so that was a plus. However, it was pretty average in taste though. There was a slightly sour taste in it - it sort of threw off the whole flavor. I like that the miso soup had free refills, it was comforting on a chilly day.

    Katsu, missing the rice

I was quite disappointed with my experience at Mr.Tonkatsu. It's unfortunate, because I actually thought the service was good and the food could have been excellent. What happened was that after ordering our food, the kitchen decided it was a good idea to send out our tonkatsu without the rice - as they had run out and said it would have to come later. At that point, I wasn't too bothered because I understand things like this can happen and I am fine with a short wait. But it took another 15 minutes for the rice to come and by then, the katsu they served me previously had already gone cold. I honestly rather they had me wait longer, and serve me a complete meal all together. Unless they really expect me to eat plain rice on its own, after I had finish the rest of the meal separately. It really didn't seem to make sense and we were not the only table that had this mishap. For a restaurant that has been here for so long and with multiple locations, you would think they have their kitchen together. It still baffles me how they can run out of rice when practically every item on their menu is served with rice. Hopefully this was just an odd case.

    Pork Cheese Katsu (around $16)

LOVE THIS PLACE! Will absolutely come again. We were a group of four and ordered 4 sobas ($5.00) and one "Pork Cheese Katsu" (approx $16). Th sobas were GOOD. Simple and tasty. The "Pork Cheese Katsu" came with miso soup, cabbage salad, sesame seeds and other stuff like rice and pickled vegetables. Filling and tasty. Not only that, but we also got a discount for paying with cash! The staff were super patient and kind! 10/10!
