I got the cheese pork katsu that came with shredded cabbage, rice, miso soup and katsu sauce. The katsu was fresh and crispy exactly like I hoped! It went so well with the steamed rice. The side sauce was not as creamy like a curry sauce which I would have preferred. The shredded cabbage had a bland taste but it came with a little sauce. The miso soup was good. Overall I loved the amount of food for the price! The service was quick and friendly and the place had lots of tables to sit at. But since this daily deal was cash n carry I had to eat elsewhere. Some high tables in the front seat 4 each and some standard tables (6-7) along the side probably handle 12-14 people. But they are on order platforms (delivery was busy while we were there). The katsu and shrimp were all very crispy and crunchy, and a bit on the oily side (which could be both good and bad). The Pork Tenderloin Katsu was especially tender. The rice however was kind of hard so we weren't able to finish it. I will never underestimate the simplicity of katsu. After my experience at Mr. Tonkatsu, I will never turn my eye away from a perfectly cooked pork katsu. I came to Mr. Tonkatsu a few weeks looking for a nice quick meal before my hockey game. It was relatively quiet for a Wednesday evening (probably due to the snow) and it was nice to be seated and served immediately. There were plenty of options on the menu from the traditional katsu setup, donburi, curry, many delicious options to select. I decided to go with the Pork Katsu with Curry on Rice. My goodness was the one of the best hearty dishes I had in a long time. The pork was fried to a great crisp, while maintaining nice moisture in the meat. The curry was full of flavour, with a nice combination of aroma and spiciness to compliment the rice. The shredded cabbage on the side serve as a nice palate cleanser and cool down if you have a low tolerance on spice. Overall, Mr. Tonkatsu has lived up to its billing for a great place for nice date night, pre or post game meal, or even just an awesome takeout option if you don't feel like cooking! I don't consider myself a huge rice snob but I do have expectations. It should be soft, warm with a ribbon of steam coming from it, and it should have that rice aroma. Overall 4/5 Visited on a Wednesday evening and it wasn't too busy - there was a lot of takeout pickups at this location. We were seated promptly and given water/menus. Menu had a good selection of appetizers, donburi, katsu, and curry katsu. I ordered the pork loin curry katsu with cheese and wait time wasn't long. You could see them freshly frying up katsus for each customer and prepping your plate before they bring it to you. We were given miso soups while we waited for you food, pretty standard miso with seaweed in it. Didn't have any tofu pieces though. The katsu was soooo cheesy - you get maximum cheese pull when you take the pieces apart. I loved wrapping the cheese around the piece of katsu and dipping it in the curry. There's a side of cabbage salad which is a nice tough and the dressing they have on the table pairs really well with it - a little salty and vinegary. I also appreciated the pieces of pickled daikon radish they have for your to cleanse your palette from the fried food. Me and a friend came back here on Tuesday for an early birthday dinner. The quality of their dishes haven't changed and the reception of the staff is just as warm as when I came here awhile back. I had the Chicken Cheese Tonkatsu dinner meal and my friend had a Chicken Tonkatsu Curry platel. The panko coating on both pieces of chicken was fried to a light crispness and each piece of the chicken breast was satisfyingly crunchy to the bite. My friend's curry plate was impressive in size because the rice and chicken with the curry sauce pooled out almost towards the edge of the plate. I added a poached egg for a bit of added protein with my rice and the flavors blended well. I took turns dipping my chicken portions in the Tonkatsu sauce and the yolk of the egg. Oh my god this place is amazing. It's a tiny shop decorated very nicely. Staff was very friendly when we walked in. We ordered the pork loin tonkatsu and the pork loin curry and they were so good!! The breading was amazing on both and the curry didn't make the outside soggy or anything. The curry came with cabbage and miso soup. The tonkatsu comes with a bowl of sesame seeds that you crush with a mortar and pestle to put into the tonkatsu sauce. It definitely adds a bit of flavor. The sauce goes really well the the tonkatsu. Tonight, I was craving a shrimp curry, but I didn't want anything too heavy and looking online I discovered a Japanese fast food place located just north of us on Bloor Street. Mr.Tonkatsu is one of those places that we have walked by for years but never really tried (because of its focus on pork), but after searching for shrimp curry in Yelp it came up as an option and we decided to try it for the first time. Located on the north side of Bathurst Street, just east of Bathurst and beside the Dollarama, the place offers a selection of tonkatsu, panko breaded dishes. While it mostly focuses on pork and chicken, they had a couple of shrimp and fish options. I opted for their shrimp curry (which included panko breaded shrimp, rice, salad, Japanese pickles and a separate container of curry sauce), while my friend had their fish tonkatsu (whitefish breaded in panko, also with rise, salad, pickles and miso soup). Both dishes were really good and worth the price (everything in Toronto has become more expensive) and is the perfect option when I am craving a simple Japanese inspired curry. The one thing I missed was some potatoes and carrots in the curry sauce, something I came to love from when I lived in Japan, but it was still a really good, quick meal. read more

Yumyumyum I love katsu. Any type of katsu. Actually, anything deep fried. Unfortunately I wasn't able to stomach a whole meal when I visited so I opted for a pound of Karage chicken wings with sweet sauce which I barely finished. If you want Japanese food that's not sushi, ramen, udon, or anything that's hot soup-related, this is your place. The decorations here are typical Japanese style, especially how the walls and chairs were designed. We were greeted immediately and were seated right after, as the place wasn't that busy when we arrived. The menu has a large focus on, well, tonkatsu, meaning deep fried pork cutlet. My dad decided to try the pork tenderloin katsu, while my mom had the beef katsu set, and I had the honey butter chicken, which was one of their newer items in the menu. We had the crisp squid as an appetizer as well. Overall, both my mom and dad really enjoyed their katsu sets. The meat was extremely juicy and it was not overly fried, but just crispy enough. My honey butter chicken was also very good, however it has a bit of a spicy punch if you're not spice tolerant like me. Finally, the crisp squid was an okay appetizer, but if I knew beforehand the portions would be as massive as they were, I would've probably skipped the appetizer. Service was excellent and we were attended to the whole way, including when we needed our waters refilled (some of the food was quite spicy). The food was simple, which matched the simple service we got (instead of the overly dramatic experience you get in the Guu establishments). If you like tonkatsu, I definitely recommend this place. During my brother's recent trip to Japan, he sent me a picture of a katsu with curry meal he had and it looked absolutely incredible. So when I found out I could get a similar dish right here in the city, I didn't waste too much time getting my butt over to Mr. Tonkatsu. Though the menu's got a lot of tasty looking options, I obviously zeroed in on the Pork Loin Katsu Curry ("homemade curry, pickled daikon"). It arrived a short time later and it's good. Actually, it's really good. The homemade curry is rich and flavorful, and the breading on the katsu is just about perfect. (The accompanying rice and salad are quite good, too.) My only real complaint is the meat itself, as it was a little on the dry and tough side. Still, I'll definitely be returning to sample some of Mr. Tonkatsu's other wares. read more
