    Curry with Pork.
    David N.

I've recently discovered just how much I loved Japanese-style curry, so I was obviously quite excited to check out Cafe Green Tea in J-Town. It's a small place attached to a market, and you order your food and then wait for your number to be called. I decided to go with the Curry w/Pork option. After about a ten minute wait, our food was handed to us. This is one excellent curry. It's super flavorful and works really well with the plentiful white rice provided. The breaded and fried piece of pork takes the whole thing over the top. It's just a really good dish. And well priced, too, at around 12 bucks.

I was a little disappointed on our recent visit as the portions gotten smaller and the prices increased to $14/$15 and the 3 items that we ordered totalled $49.66 which is a bit pricey. I probably won't be visiting this place too often.

My favourite udon dish is from here because of the mushroom - it oozes with flavour! My go to order here is the tempura udon - the tempura usually comes inside the bowl but you can ask for it on the side which is my preference because I like it crispy. This is like a food court style restaurant - you order at the front, take a seat, and they call your number when it is ready. It is beside Bakery Nakamura in the last unit of the building - however a bunch of stores are connected. WIll come here again to try their other dishes!

This is the place to be for a quick lunch. Their food court style is perfect to order, eat and head off. I love their Japanese curry, it's the perfect portion for somebody like me who cannot eat too much and can not tolerate spice. I went for their curry chicken katsu and absolutely love their flavour and the piece of chicken was just right for me. Not too much batter and the right thickness. The seating situation is first come first serve, the only thing is the price point is a little higher compared to other places around the area considering the size of the portion. But then again, you're not getting the same type of food. I will come again as it is great curry :)

    Curry egg on rice

The Japanese curry is really good. It hearty, flavourful and not spicy. We tried the Curry egg on rice and curry pork chop. I would say the pork chop was a bit over done. For quick eat, don't mind a cafeteria kind of feel and looking for great Japanese curry I would come here. The service is self serve and self-seating.

This small little cafe can be found inside J Town with a huge selection if yummy japanese favourites to choose from! I love coming here because afterwards I can shop around the market and also check out their bakery and sashimi selection for the day. I always order the curry pork cutlet every time I come here. Ever since visiting Japan I was on the hunt to find so authentic Japanese curry rice here in Markham and this is the closest yet. Their curry is not too spicy and it honestly just keeps you coming back for more! Another of my favourites here is their udon bowls and their miso cutlet rice combo. The price range is super reasonable too! The only thing to keep in mind however, is their closing hours, it differs every day. Also the parking is limited so you gotta circle a few times sometimes or you might get lucky! Definitely recommend you to visit this hidden gem for your fIx of japanese cuisine.

Japanese meals with reasonable prices. Great place for a quick lunch or dinner. Service is fast and staff is friendly. Located on the right side of bakery nakamura.

This is a small cafe inside the JTown supermarket offering food court style meals. They have a number of udon, soba, and curry rice options, as well as oyako don and katsu don. My favourite item is the egg omelet rice which has small chicken bits inside tomato flavoured rice, wrapped in a thick egg omelet with a tomato sauce on top. The other items I find are pricey given the small portions, but the quality is good and consistent. It's a good place to grab a quick bite after shopping there.

Omurice - looks good but not good imo. Order the curry dishes instead! thank me later!

LUNCH Stay away from #15 aka the Omurice (Japanese omelette rice) it looked amazing but had no flavour or depth to it. To be bold, it sucked. Lol. I should have stuck with my original idea of curry but at the last second switched it up like a babo-seki! :( Will return to get the curry again next time.

I wish that there are more little Japanese places like Cafe Green Tea. The Shrimp Tempura Soba noodle I ate here is a Foodie dream noodle. There are so many complex taste in every bite and each different items in the noodles give one different senses of adventure for your tastebuds. BTW, this is the only place where I been to the actual orders are bigger and more appetitizing than the photos... I could not stop smiling when the 2 older ladies at the back was so excited when they saw their XXL shrimp tempura set they ordered. Yes I will be back... Yes I will see more noodles Yes I think the Japanese girl server has a nice and friendly smile! They accepts Visa and Interac!

Skip the donburi; I ordered Katsudon and it was disgusting.

I used to really like this place when it first opened. You could get home style Japanese food for a reasonable price in a cafeteria style setting. I went this past weekend after a year long hiatus; it was unfortunately a disappointing experience. Firstly, the service could use an improvement. I was standing by the counter ready to order and the employee just stood there staring blankly at me. The food came out pretty quickly after we ordered, which was nice because I was hungry. When the food came out though was a huge disappointment. I've had katsudon here before and it was really good, which is the reason why I ordered it. Look at my photo; I was disgusted by what came out.Anyway, I've definitely experience better. Good for: cheap eats

Location: 5/5 Conveniently inside the forever cute and countryside Japanese market in J-Town, this place is Toronto's best in anything Japanese (for now). Decor/Ambience: 3.5/5 Old school, industrial warehouse layout with classical music for that extra .5 point. Clean but very low budget or upkeep. Food quality: 4/5 Cafe style, family-friendly, simple comfort food. Service: 3/5 They make the food pretty quickly and serve it to you. No extra service. Value: 3.5/5 Pretty authentic with Japanese small portions, but at Canadian prices... sure makes one want to just learn how to make it yourself at home for half the price. They take cash, debit and visa, so that is convenient. Would only come here for the novelty.

Located inside J-town, you have to walk all the way to the end to get to this restaurant. When you walk inside, it looks like a cafeteria. Walk right up to the front and you will get a host of japanese food that you can pick. The prices are reasonable. I ordered the katsu-don but you can order other stuff like their curry cutlet on rice or tempura on noodle. Once you order and pay, you will be given a number which they will call out and you have to go and pickup. The food taste was ok. I wouldn't say that I was blown away but it was reasonable for the price. This place gets extremely busy during the weekends. Mainly cantonese customers coming in to eat. If I am looking for a quick japanese food for about $10, then i'd come again.

Taki is a fine dining Japanese restaurant located in the busy commerical areas of Richmond Hill…read more We recently had lunch here for a special occasion. The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

Was worried it wouldn't be filling, but it's just the right amount of food. Whether you're celebrating something special or just want a traditional Japanese meal, this would be my spot. The sushi chef was very friendly and approachable, but he wouldn't make you feel like you need to yap with him like other omakase I've been to in Toronto where they would talk to the customers a lot. The wait staff was attentive and polite. Overall really good quality sushi, service and value. Would come again! I also appreciate that they don't require a deposit for reservations and don't require to pick the set you want beforehand. Very clean and warm design. Felt like I was in Japan!

Enter either you own info if paying separately or the same info if one person pays all of it. Lots of new dishes as well as old favourites: Chochin: Tried it. Not a fan. Tastes exactly the way I thought it would. Which is internal organ like but in an unpleasant creamy way. Duck liver raspberry toast: Nice but could be bigger. The raspberry brought an expected nice sweetness to the nice liver taste. A little more raspberry would be nice. Tuskune and egg yolk dip: It's ok but not that big a deal. Cheese momo: Fantastic. The swiss cheese is an excellent pairing to the chicken. Skin-Kawa - Delciious. Crispy. Must have, Hiza (knee cartidlidge): nice and crunchy Beef short rubs boneless: Was enticed due to the tendon part. It was nice but not incredible. Beef tenderloin + Chimichurri: Wife's favourite. We always order several of these. P-toro: Another must repeat. Great pork belly taste. Cherry tomato bacon maki: New and delightful. Bacon wrapped cherry tomatoes provide a delightful burst of tomatoey sweetness wrapped with the unctuousness of bacon. Lamb rib chop: Excellent and tasty. Once again everything was cooked perfectly and the amazing binchotan smoke made everything delicious. Fun fact, they put charcoal in the free water carafes as well.

Good food that hurts your wallet…read more Japanese izakayas are few and few between in Markham - that's why I got excited to see Sumoki pop up! It's not on the main street of Unionville, but its presence on a side road matches the quaint nature of the restaurant. It's not the biggest inside, but it gives off a Japanese aesthetic with the wood trim throughout. We made reservations in advance to avoid long lines, if any (thankfully it wasn't packed the night we went). Orders are made via QR code, which seems to be the norm now. I like it since you don't have to waive down waiters in a low-dimmed izakaya. Their main offering seemed to be skewers. We ordered a bunch of them to try - notably, all of them had a nice smoky fragrance to them (maybe that's why it's called Sumoki). We especially enjoyed the Grilled Chicken Skin. Perfect crunch from the initial bite leading to a slight chew throughout. The seasoning was spot on as well. Other honourable mentions include extremely succulent Chicken Thigh meat, Gizzards and Beef Tongue. You could really taste the meat juices from each skewer since the chefs don't overpower it with seasoning. Other local skewer places tend to have the same seasoning across different cuts of meat, so Sumoki felt like a breath of fresh air amongst the growing market. Coincidentally, it's also the first place I've been to offer Giant Rooster Testicles. Now...don't be alarmed. It sounds exotic and might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this dish is extremely creamy. Give it a try if you have the courage! We came to celebrate my brother's birthday, but quickly realized our bill was racking up really quickly despite a small number of orders. Sumoki is definitely a place where you don't want to come on an empty stomach, since each order is 1 skewer (unlike other local restaurants). Other menu items, from what we saw of neighbouring tables, didn't fare much better in terms of portion sizes. We left quickly to avoid some serious financial damage for the 6 of us, but also quickly drove to another impromptu restaurant to get settle our hunger down. Sumoki definitely isn't cheap. I wouldn't recommend this to be a formal dinner - moreso if you wanted a light snack after dinner. But then again, with these prices, Sumoki tries to make itself bougie without delivering 100% satisfaction so maybe try at your own risk.
