Chicken with japchae (it is a soup dish).
    Calvin L.

Among the other options at Pacific Mall's food court, Japanese Express is not bad. I can also see the owners are also very hard working and fighting in a very competitive space. When I ordered the chicken w japchae dish, I did not realize it would be a soup dish. Likely my fault for assuming it would not be a soup dish.

This place has been here since the beginning of time and I remember the good ol' days of my youth when I'd practically beg my parents to eat here whenever we shopped at Pmall. Now that there are SO many options and Pmall is no longer the "place to hang out", I don't find myself frequenting here anymore. However, I tried it out again the other day and hey, it's still pretty decent! This place goes for the "budget, foodcourt-style sushi" and it's good at mediocrity. Catch them on their weekday specials and you'll come out with a decent meal for a decent price. I personally like the Friday "sushi, sashimi, maki combo" for $11.50. Just remember, you get what you pay for!

Wanna to grab something quick and my kids wanted Jap Chae so we picked this place. Great customer services. They were nice to accommodate our request for hot (warm) Jap Chae. We also ordered a Donburi (#48). It was made nice and crispy. She made it right in front of us. Food was very tasty. No complaints.

Salmon Sushi, Eel Sushi, and California Roll Combo - $11.50

[LOCATION] - 5/5 This place is located on the 2nd floor of Pacific Mall on Steeles Ave E and Kennedy Rd. There were ample parking spaces in the lot now that Market Village and a bunch of restaurants in the area closed down. [SERVICE] - 5/5 The gentleman at the cash register is super friendly, sweet, and is great with noticing the details. [DÉCOR] - 5/5 The decor resembles a food stand in Japan with a few stools on the side of the counter, and there are many more seats at the food court. [QUALITY] - 5/5 Very high quality and fresh! Tastes so much better when the chefs make the sushi fresh, and isn't stale like pre-packaged sushi in supermarkets. [ORDER] - 5/5 Salmon Sushi, Eel Sushi, and California Roll Combo - $11.50: sashimi was so fresh and melted in my mouth! Eel was perfectly flavoured and avocado was perfectly ripe. [OVERALL] - 5/5 I would definitely recommend Japanese Express for a fresh, healthy, and light meal. I love everything about this place and the sushi is comparable with ones from an a la carte restaurant.

    #7 combo. Costs 12 bucks.

Nice Japanese food option at the Pacific Mall food court. Ordered the #7 combo, salmon sashimi with rice, miso soup, hot tea, japchae, salad. $12 taxes in. Pretty good value. Food quality was alright. Over-all pretty OK deal. They do have a raffle going on til September, make sure you add your entry! They have a lot of meal options to choose from so would definitely try other items next time. Review 89 of 100

Been here a few times, always one of the tip choices in the food court. Didn't know when they started having daily specials but definitely a big bonus, can't say no to a good deal. Only complaint about this visit was the service. Waited at the counter for a while before anyone noticed and came over. Presentation of the food is always nice, just like something served at a restaurant except on styrofoam containers. Noticed the wasabi they serve is very mild, had to use a lot to get a little spice. The amount of seafood served was good for the price, not thin pieces of fish. There was a good variety on the plate as well. Top notch Japanese food from a food court. Overall, can't go wrong with good food and decent price. Only downside is finding a seat maybe a little difficult.

    Kalbi Jap-Chai
    Ben Z.

Japanese Express is found in the busy food court of Pacific Mall's second floor. Featuring a large selection of Japanese and Korean dishes, it's pretty amazing how they can maintain consistent quality of food across so much variety. Today, I ordered the Kalbi Jap-Chai, which is rice noodles soup with beef short ribs. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the short ribs: juicy, tender, and large. The broth of the noodles was light but flavored just right, not too much that it overpowers the noodles. I really enjoyed the eggs mixed with the noodle, because the flavor pairs perfectly with the soup. However, the picture of the meal promised a bap-style egg, which the meal itself did not contain. Their sushi selection is also very good. It's hard to trust sashimi at fast food sushi, but this venue seems to do it right. Try a plate of Salmon sashimi and tell me that you aren't impressed. The prices are reasonable, mostly all under $12. Their rice dishes are very good for value, such as the bulgogi on rice. The service was medium, food arrived fast, but they never mentioned that the plate of food was mine. Overall, a great food venue in a food court filled with asian options, you can't go wrong with JE.

Sunday special, sushi mix set #6.
    Julia C.

Got the daily special today, sushi mix set #6 (salmon, eel, octopus, imitation crab meat, shrimp, and yellowtail I believe). Price comes to exactly $10 with tax. Definitely not worth the price IMO. There's also miso soup, a cup of tea on the side as well as salad and some japchae (korean glass noodles). Fish slices are super thin and the eel was fishy. Salmon was pretty good and I had no issues with the rice. Wasabi was good. Didn't eat the pickled ginger since I normally don't lol (personally hate it). Might be worth trying something else here though.

Sushi Lunch, which is their Sunday deal. It was $10 after tax.
    Angela C.

Located on the second level of Pacific Mall, near the back of the food court, this is your typical Japanese joint run by Chinese people. I came here on a Sunday afternoon as I needed to buy something from Pacific Mall. I wouldn't come to this place purposely for the sushi but it is a good option if you need a sushi fix. This place has daily deals. The Sunday deal is the Sushi Lunch, which added up to $10 with tax. The Sushi Lunch came with miso soup, japchae, salad, and tea.

Taki is a fine dining Japanese restaurant located in the busy commerical areas of Richmond Hill…read more We recently had lunch here for a special occasion. The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

Was worried it wouldn't be filling, but it's just the right amount of food. Whether you're celebrating something special or just want a traditional Japanese meal, this would be my spot. The sushi chef was very friendly and approachable, but he wouldn't make you feel like you need to yap with him like other omakase I've been to in Toronto where they would talk to the customers a lot. The wait staff was attentive and polite. Overall really good quality sushi, service and value. Would come again! I also appreciate that they don't require a deposit for reservations and don't require to pick the set you want beforehand. Very clean and warm design. Felt like I was in Japan!

Enter either you own info if paying separately or the same info if one person pays all of it. Lots of new dishes as well as old favourites: Chochin: Tried it. Not a fan. Tastes exactly the way I thought it would. Which is internal organ like but in an unpleasant creamy way. Duck liver raspberry toast: Nice but could be bigger. The raspberry brought an expected nice sweetness to the nice liver taste. A little more raspberry would be nice. Tuskune and egg yolk dip: It's ok but not that big a deal. Cheese momo: Fantastic. The swiss cheese is an excellent pairing to the chicken. Skin-Kawa - Delciious. Crispy. Must have, Hiza (knee cartidlidge): nice and crunchy Beef short rubs boneless: Was enticed due to the tendon part. It was nice but not incredible. Beef tenderloin + Chimichurri: Wife's favourite. We always order several of these. P-toro: Another must repeat. Great pork belly taste. Cherry tomato bacon maki: New and delightful. Bacon wrapped cherry tomatoes provide a delightful burst of tomatoey sweetness wrapped with the unctuousness of bacon. Lamb rib chop: Excellent and tasty. Once again everything was cooked perfectly and the amazing binchotan smoke made everything delicious. Fun fact, they put charcoal in the free water carafes as well.

Good food that hurts your wallet…read more Japanese izakayas are few and few between in Markham - that's why I got excited to see Sumoki pop up! It's not on the main street of Unionville, but its presence on a side road matches the quaint nature of the restaurant. It's not the biggest inside, but it gives off a Japanese aesthetic with the wood trim throughout. We made reservations in advance to avoid long lines, if any (thankfully it wasn't packed the night we went). Orders are made via QR code, which seems to be the norm now. I like it since you don't have to waive down waiters in a low-dimmed izakaya. Their main offering seemed to be skewers. We ordered a bunch of them to try - notably, all of them had a nice smoky fragrance to them (maybe that's why it's called Sumoki). We especially enjoyed the Grilled Chicken Skin. Perfect crunch from the initial bite leading to a slight chew throughout. The seasoning was spot on as well. Other honourable mentions include extremely succulent Chicken Thigh meat, Gizzards and Beef Tongue. You could really taste the meat juices from each skewer since the chefs don't overpower it with seasoning. Other local skewer places tend to have the same seasoning across different cuts of meat, so Sumoki felt like a breath of fresh air amongst the growing market. Coincidentally, it's also the first place I've been to offer Giant Rooster Testicles. Now...don't be alarmed. It sounds exotic and might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this dish is extremely creamy. Give it a try if you have the courage! We came to celebrate my brother's birthday, but quickly realized our bill was racking up really quickly despite a small number of orders. Sumoki is definitely a place where you don't want to come on an empty stomach, since each order is 1 skewer (unlike other local restaurants). Other menu items, from what we saw of neighbouring tables, didn't fare much better in terms of portion sizes. We left quickly to avoid some serious financial damage for the 6 of us, but also quickly drove to another impromptu restaurant to get settle our hunger down. Sumoki definitely isn't cheap. I wouldn't recommend this to be a formal dinner - moreso if you wanted a light snack after dinner. But then again, with these prices, Sumoki tries to make itself bougie without delivering 100% satisfaction so maybe try at your own risk.
