    A5. Chicken Karaage
    Aurore L.

Brothless ramen. Let that sink in. As someone who believes the broth is the very soul of ramen--I've been known to leave a shop with a to-go container of just the liquid gold, this concept was a bit of a head-scratcher. I couldn't quite bring myself to make the leap on this first visit. So, while my dining companion (a regular) dove headfirst into her order, I played it safe with the chicken karaage and pork gyoza. Both were delicious, for the record. My friend got her usual vegetarian ramen with tofu, medium spicy, and the resulting happy sniffling from across the table was a powerful endorsement. She loved it. I'll need to mentally prepare myself for the main event next time. Until then, I can vouch for the appetizers and the very cute little teapot my tea came in.

My partner and I ordered the: - aburi salmon mazesoba: I got this with the thin ramen and it was very good. The torched miso marinated salmon was very flavourful. I couldn't really taste the spicy mayo but I liked how the onsen egg added another layer of creaminess to the dish. The broth at the bottom made it very tasty! - megumi mazesoba noodle: My partner got this with soba and it came with some pretty dry pork chashu. It also had some minced pork and braised pork belly. For the eggs there was an onsen egg and half an ajitama egg. We both liked the aburi salmon mazesoba more than this one. - For the appetizer, we got purple yam tempura served with this sesame mayo dressing and enjoyed it very much. It tasted like purple yam fries. I gave it a 3/5 because I felt it was okay overall, the megumi mazesoba was not as good as we were expecting. Service was nice and fast!

Toronto's first dedicated mazesoba restaurant. I learned from their site that Mazesoba is brothless ramen. I ordered the set menu at 22$ which comes with a choice of mazesoba, choice of drink and choice of dessert. The mazesoba is better if you stir it, given the very little amount of intense flavorful broth at the bottom. I see table beside me ordered rice when they got to the bottom, my guess is they didn't mix in the flavors. Regardless, the noodles are tasty. Service is ok, with limited waitress attention due to being a very busy day, I see the waitress constantly on a run. Ambiance is not special, it's a cozy space with lots of small tables.

We had a nice warm bowl of udon today at Megumi. The restaurant was empty due to the snow but luckily it was open. I ordered the pork Katsu udon and found the bowl a decent combination of flavour however, not particularly the best broth. The restaurant is located next to the subway and a large Green P parking lot. This makes the location convenient for drivers and transit users. The restaurant had ample 2 person seats and warmly decorated with cherry blossoms. Our server was pleasant but there was a mix up with our orders and my niece ended up getting a very spicy bowl of udon when she got no spice. It was a little disappointing since we were the only patrons in the restaurant at the time. I wouldn't come back

It's a small but cute place. I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't been intentionally brought here. So "Mazesoba" means brothless ramen. That was interesting to know. I tried the Chicken Mazesoba with udon noodles. It was different from the traditional light soba I had expected as it was a little bit on the oily side. Overall, the dish had a great flavor profile, and the noodles were easy to chew. Service was great. Be careful if you want to try their house chili - a small portion they served contained a huge level of spiciness. Food (quality, creativity, consistency) - 4/5 Drinks (quality, variety) - NA/5 Ambience (interior design, cleanliness) - 4/5 Service (courtesy, knowledge, timeliness) - 4.5/5 Value (quality vs. price) - 5/5 OVERALL - 4.3

Seeing as how this place has a 4.8 rating on google reviews and 4.6 on yelp, I had expectations of ramen I had eaten in Japan. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed. The broth severely lacked depth of flavour, noodle texture was a bit too chewy (no bounce). I don't know how this place has such high ratings. Either these are bots inflating ratings or if actual humans are giving this place high reviews, they have no clue of what good ramen is outside of what packaged ramen from the grocery store.

Service deserves 5/5 as very polite and hospitable. Prices are reasonable. Portions are good, not too much but can satisfy your stomach. Had the Mentaiko Takoyaki which was a summer special. The mentaiko mayo was ok, and the batter was nice, however there was really no filling inside and the tako was almost nonexistent which was disappointing :(. The Mazesoba was ok but average. There is a good amount of toppings but I felt like the flavours were a bit lacking. I got the Zenbu Mazesoba that comes with a portion of chashu on top of their original. The chasiu had a nice charred to it but overall was quite bland when mixed with everything else. I do recommend the ramen over the udon as I think the ramen will soak up and be coated with the sauce better, although I knew that wouldn't be the case with udon. Overall good to have once in a while but not overtly excited to go back.

I've been looking for good mazesoba options in Toronto for some time now since having tried it in Japan/Korea/Vancouver/LA. Megumi definitely fills the void and they have quite the selection. Our party of 3 (+1 one toddler) were seated promptly and our server was very accommodating especially with the toddler. The place seems a bit small at first, but there is ample space and seating, with beautiful Japanese inspired decor. Our server explained the menu well and showed us our possible options with the promotions they were currently running. 2 of us opted for the dinner set which came with tea, appetizer, mazesoba, and dessert. The gyoza and the banana spring rolls were fried nicely. The Megumi Mazesoba was the highlight of the meal for me. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the pork and the sauce blended well with the noodles to give it a nice creamy texture. The char siu was torched to the right doneness. The side sauces/condiments also gave each bite a different taste (vinegar, chili oil, bonito flakes). You also have the option of getting rice to finish off any of the remaining sauce which was definitely appreciated. Definitely recommended and will be back when craving mazesoba.

We came to this restaurant a second time on 2023-02-04. At soft opening, there were 5 entrees listed on their menu. The grand opening was on 2023-01-21, and they had 11 entrees. On our second visit, we ordered the following: 1. Chicken Karaage with Mayo ($9.50). 2. Steak Mazesoba ($21.00). 3. Unagi Mazesoba ($21.00). 4. Megumi Mazesoba ($22.00). 5. Banana Spring Rolls with Kuromitsu Kinako Ice Cream ($6.50). The Karaage was tender. My son loved it! The Steak was perfectly cooked. The Unagi was tasty. We ordered the Megumi Mazesoba again because they changed how they make the main ingredients. The Braised Pork Belly is simmered for 3-4 hours and then torched. The Banana Spring Rolls and Kuromitsu Kinako ice cream were delicious! Review 2023-024

I'm the outlier here so might have caught them on an off day, ordered the 'wrong' things or just have a weird palette... but thought Megumi Mazesoba was just ok. Got the: - Unagi and Steak Mazesobas: Unagi was tasty, steak was a bit too chewy. Was expecting the broth to be a lot tastier given the offer to get rice after to soak it up, and thought it was bland. Got thick noodles and they were nicely chewy. Would have liked more toppings. - Squid Tentacles: A bit too fried for me. - Takoyaki: Tasty but a bit too much coating and too little octopus. Again, outlier here so would suggest giving it a try.

Currently still in their soft opening phase so there is a 20% off mains and 10% off the unagi eel and Angus beef rib one. We came as a table of three around 6pm yesterday and it was not busy at all. The staff were busy with delivery orders but we were seated quickly and got our menus. For all the mains you can pick from thin ramen noodles or thick udon noodles. Our entire table went thick. I ended up getting the megumi mazesoba which has all three types of pork (cha siu, pork belly slice, and minced ground pork), onsen egg, egg, corn and a few other garnishes. Following the steps on the wall! 1. Mix well 2. Can add kombu vinegar and or chili oil locates on the table for added umami flavour or a kick of spice (the vinegar was not too strong so I ended up adding a lot) 3. Near the end, you can ask for a bowl of mini rice to add to the sauce Overall, the flavours were pretty good. The noodles were cooked well although I do prefer them to be a bit chewier. This was definitely a bit more soupy than the other mazesobas I have had (Vancouver and elsewhere). Excited to see what other flavours and toppings they come out with for their grand opening :)

This is a "dry" ramen place. You order via a QR code on the table which is pretty convenient. I got the special which was 45 dollars and comes with 2 mains (original or karragge), dessert, some appetizers, and 2 drinks. Pros: + Flavours are good, and you can customize the spice level and noodles to your liking (udon or ramen are free, other are extra). Mild was just the right amount of spice for me. + Service is good. Server was friendly and took time to explain the menu. + Lots of different options. + Egg is cooked nicely. + You can ask for a small bowl of rice at the end to mix with the leftover sauce. Cons: - Food is salty. - The appetizers are quite oily.

Iced hojicha latter and original mazesoba

Stumbled upon this place by chance and have been coming back ever since! They have decent portion and offers the friendliest service. My favorite is the original mazesoba with signature spice level and iced hojicha latte, can't go wrong with this combo! On the wall they do write the way to enjoy a meal there and I'd say do ask for the warm white rice to finish the rest of the sauce! It's so satisfying

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn.
