. always love coming here, amazing service . quite a few tables but fill up quickly . spice level 2 has a good balance for taste and heat for someone with a good spice tolerance . big portions! definitely sharable if you wanted . will be coming back :)
It was overpriced fo the portion size but everything else was okay. The food took a bit of time to come out though
Came here for lunch and if u like fried cutlets type food then you should give them a try. Service was amazing as they kept checking on if the food was good and also if we had enough food and water. The decor wasn't great or bad. Only down side is lack of parking by restaurant and seating is tight at the restaurant. Free parking is available one street north. Will come back again and try different things on the menu.
My favourite tonkotsu spot. Their batter is excellent. I can't choose between the chicken and pork - they are both so good and well flavoured. Service is good. Seating area is a bit cramped - tables are a bit too close together, it's not really spacious in the restaurant. Street Parking is also a bit hard to find unless you park across the street where the Tim Hortons is.
Went to their North York location and ordered the Carbo Curry Chicken Katsu Tteokkochi set. Like always, their portion size is HUGE. I ordered the tteokkochi set thinking it was smaller, oh boy was I wrong. It was super filling but very tasty. The batter was super crispy and the cabbage and pickled radish really helped with balancing out the greasiness. Definitely coming back to try their other menu items!
Brown Donkatsu 5/5. Great food, amazing portions, consistent quality. Food- I've been twice and I've tried two different katsu flavors. The first time I ordered the curry carbonara, I thought it would be an odd concept, but it tasted quite good! For those who like curry, curry carbonara is a creamy-rich curry sauce base. I recommend to try as it is something different! Combo Katsu is katsu with half katsu sauce and half carbonara. A little mix of both worlds if you can't make up your mind, exactly why I got it! Would recommend to get the sauce on the side if you don't want the katsu getting soggy, and you can dip the katsu in whichever sauce you want! Ps. Portion sizes are huge!!!! The chicken katsu comes w 3 pieces, and pork comes with 2 large pieces!! This is what keeps us coming back for sure. I recommend both, and looking to try more!! Service- the only downfall of the north York location is limited seating, and evening I find it to be quite busy, so sometimes you would have to wait. They're quite busy but they try their very best to be attentive. Walk-in seating only, no reservations available. Unfortunately, we came with a group of 5 and they brought out food all at different times, so one of our friends were waiting quite a while while some of us started eating. Ambience- cozy, small, table booths. Approx 7 tables total sitting about 2-4 people each.
I had the shrimp and fish katsu set. It came with 5 shrimps and 2 large pieces of fish. The shrimp and fish was delicious, battered with a light and delicate coating that was crispy and flaky. The set meal comes with a cabbage mayo salad, corn and rice. Which are great pairings to the fried items. The brown sauce and tartar sauce is served on the side so that the katsu doesn't become soggy. I sneaked a couple pieces of pork katsu and it was great also. Amazing value for money. We all ordered one dish and ended up packing half of each dish home because we were so full. Pro tip would be to ask for your sauces on the side so that when you inevitably pack away some of the katsu, they will not be soggy when warmed up at home. New gold standard for katsu!
This is THE spot for a massive Katsu meal. I got the original katsu for 20.28 CAD (including tax); while it's not the cheapest for a one-meal setting, the portion is huge and good for 2 people.
Worth it! For appetizer, my brother and I tried their fried shrimp which was extra crispy tempura complimented by their tartar sauce. Their tartar sauce was the nicest balance between the rich creaminess of the mayonnaise and sourness of the lime/lemon. I loved this combination! Based on other reviews regarding the large portion sizes of their katsu, I decided to share the teri pork katsu with my brother. It came with two generous pieces of katsu, their original brown katsu sauce (which was warm and delicious!), drizzled with mayonnaise and sprinkled with dried bonito flakes. This katsu set also came with rice and refillable corn and cabbage (with a mayo based sauce). I ordered an extra rice on the side. The katsu was hot, crispy, and delicious and it was so good with their katsu sauce. The corn wasn't anything special and the cabbage was a bit too heavy with the mayo based dressing (compared to a vinaigrette dressing like at Katsuya). However, once in a while, this dish is a treat. One katsu order could definitely fill up two people as it did for us. I also brought some leftovers home! They have 5 tables and one of their tables is squished in between a corner and another table. We were initially seated there but I asked to move to another seat which they accommodated fine. I feel that table should be removed or the seating arrangement be modified so that patrons sitting in that seat won't feel too awkward and confined sitting so closely to another table. Katsuya (Japanese) and Brown Donkatsu (Korean) are a 2 minute walk from each other. I find it hard to compare them because although they are very similar, their food and the overall experience is different. I wouldn't know which one to pick over the other!
After trying Brown's for the first time up at First Markham Place this place has quickly become one of my favorite spots. So happy they finally opened up a location here in North York as well. Every time I passed by it was super busy and I'm glad I finally was able to order it for take out. I ordered the combo katsu with pork loin, this comes with a side of shredded cabbage/dressing, corn salad, rice, two katsu loins and a white sauce (carbonara - like) and a red sauce (tomato based - like) I had it regular spice which was like a shin ramen level of spice (that's what the lady on the phone discribed it like). I absolutely love their coating on the loin, super crispy and crunch, nice and golden texture and best of all it was not dry. It does taste a bit bland on it's own but that's why the sauces are there! The sauces are amazing, creamy white sauce paired with a nice amount of heat in the red sauce which also had a hint of sweetness to it. Definitely one of the highly recommended items to order, they also serve ramen as well but they are known for their katsus!
It's been a while since I visited Brown Donkatsu and it's like the quality never changed since I enjoyed my first katsu dish at their Markham location. Newly arrived in North York, Brown Donkatsu continues to offer classic and unique takes on pork/chicken katsu. Whether it's on a sizzling plated with melted cheese on top or with their Japanese curry, nothing beats biting into their crunchy katsu with the right amount of coating and seasoning. If you're looking for an East Meets West combination, you should try the Carbo Curry Katsu, which is a combination of carbonara sauce and Japanese curry! Spicy and creamy, I highly recommend ordering this with a minimum Level 2 spice to get the full enjoyment of this katsu dish! I cannot wait to come back again soon to try the other classics at Brown Donkatsu!
All the deep-fried are so crispy, and the cheese is super heavy in ingredients. Recommended for anyone who loves cheesy pork chop. Personal favourite snow cheese (shredded cheese) cheese bomb katsu (pork cutlet with melted mozzarella cheese) We also try everything set (fried shrimp, fish & chicken combo) original katsu sauce tartar sauce The service is also very good and they do provide ruffle now. Make sure you join and I am sure that you can get a prize.
Delicious spot for Japanese style Katsu. It's fried great and very flaky when biting in. One of the better places for Katsu I have been. The everything set was decent price for about $20. Came with shrimp, fish and choice of chicken or pork with all the sides. Get ready to be really full after eating that The cheese stick appetizers was great for the cheese lovers. We tried the hot and spicy cheese Katsu on the sizzling plate too. It was tasty but only downside was since it's covered in a sauce it gets a little soggy and you don't enjoy the full crispy experience. They also have ramen and the portion looked big but definitely not their main seller. I recommend to get the Katsu here and if you not sure get the everything platter
I love Katus and this is my favourite place to get it! This cozy spot has amazing food and super kind staff. My favourite item to get is the cheese stick katsu, which has a good ratio of cheese and pork. Fried to be perfectly crispy and somehow not too oily, each bite is amazing. The brown sauce and cranberry sauce compliments it perfectly, and I personally enjoy the cranberry sauce as a pallet cleanser. Each katsu comes with a side of rice, corn and salad, which complement the katsu greatly. The Brown Katsu is also very good, extremely crispy and not oily at all. This one comes with 2 bug pieces of katsu and could be easily shared if you're light eaters. The brown sauce and sides (rice, corn, salad), also complement this katsu. I went on a weekday evening and it was still packed, so make sure to go early to get a spot, as they fill up quickly. But the staff were super friendly and served us quickly. I highly recommend this spot, which its big portions and delicious good! read more

Rose garlic katsu. Truly mouth watering. Garlic chips, two giant face katsus, and a delicious creamy rose sauce. Enough for 2-3 meals... read more
Fried so well! Got the shrimp (comes in 6 pieces) and it's crispy! Comes with 2 scoops of rice, sides of corn and salad. The curry was delicious too. My only wish is that they have more sauce / flavour options for the shrimp. The pork was also fried well, not dried or overly lean which is usually my fear. Comes in 2 big pieces, which makes up for coming with only 1 scoop of rice. Overall would recommend! Go early as it does get busy! The servers are all super friendly and accommodating. Good casual spot for a quick meal or to catch up with friends. Lots of take out orders too. read more

I came here with such a surprise! The food portions are enormous, enough to feed 2 stomach for each order. The donkatsu here is really crispy, but the meat is nice and moist. Definitely not a healthy for your cholesterol, but food was very tasty. Not a lot of parking spots for this restaurant, small dining area, but nice and cosy. They serve up some nice authentic Korean style soup noodles here too. Service was quick and staff seemed friendly. I would come back here if I lived closer, but probably a dangerous situation for me, I'd be here often which wouldn't be good for my health. read more
Crispy batter with thick, tender cutlets, Brown Donkatsu nails it in the "katsu specialty" category and is definitely one of the better katsu chains in Toronto! I ordered the Cheese Bomb Katsu and my boyfriend got the Brown Teishoku for takeout. All three (cheese, pork, and chicken) were delicious and the cheese was still hot and "pull-able" even after I got home. I do prefer this place over Katsuya. read more

We went in on Tuesday evening. The dining area was on the smaller side but we were seated immediately. Service was amazing. Both the waiter and owner checked in on us. The food was amazing. Portions pretty big! The combo chicken katsu and cheese stick katsu were both very good. We got level 2 spicy - but found that it was not as spicy as we expected. Their radish kimchi was the best we've ever tried. Got 2 refills. Speaking of refills, we were asked if we wanted more rice or salad throughout our meal (free of charge). Overall an awesome place and can't wait to try more things on the menu read more
Was lucky enough to try out their dishes on the first opening days & be able to take advantage of their grand opening offers! We ordered 4 dishes (chicken katsu, fish katsu, pork katsu and cheese sticks). All the dishes were with different spice levels (a side container of the dip) and came with corn and coleslaw. Service was great and can't wait to dine in here soon! read more

Brown Katsu has a NEW location in North York! Their katsu is my all-time fave in town - always generous portions, flavourful, juicy, and crispy. I always order their Combo Katsu with chicken meat as it's made with chicken breast and it comes with two sauces, cream and spicy. The cream sauce is super cheesy and rich while the spicy one you can pick from 4 spice levels. Two flavours in one! If you want to try a bit of everything, I recommend their Everything Set. It comes with fish, shrimp, and pork/chicken. For cheese lovers like me, you've gotta try their Cheese Stick Katsu! It's a pork katsu with cheese filled in the middle of each stick. Available for as appetizer and main dish. read more

If you're looking for some delicious katsu, then you need to check out Brown Donkatsu newest location in North york. Got to try the cheese katsu (appetizer), fried shrimp, hot & spicy cheese katsu and everything katsu set with chicken. The meats are very crispy and deep battered to get that crunch. The brown sauce is their signature and you can choose your spicy level - it is spicy! Would recommend the hot & spicy cheese Katsu and fried shrimp! A friend told me to visit this restaurant for a nice Katsu meal with a Korean twist. Parking was a bit tough but then noticed plenty of parking across the street. The place was small and packed. Servers were very pleasant, polite and courteous. It reminded me of a small eatery in downtown Osaka, close to my hometown. No frills, just good food! My friend ordered the Katsu curry and I ordered the Shrimp & Chicken Katsu. Honestly, the portions were so generous, we could have ordered and shared a meal as we both left with doggy bags. The food was fresh, seasoned well and extremely tasty. Unlike other katsu resuatrants we have frequented, especially one within close proximilty of this restaurant, the food was not greasy. While speaking with the owner, we were advised that the secret for the crunchy non-greasy katsu was their coating which they make by baking their bread inhouse. We were impressed! Prices were very reasonable, servers were polite and the place was very clean albeit devoid of any frills or fancy setting. The owner, I was told is focused on the quality and portion of the food instead of fancy settings. Only downside is the place is small so it could be a bit of a wait to get your table. This is a "must try" restaurant for Katsu lovers. For the owner, please increase the number of tables and have easier accessible parking. read more

My impression of Donkatsu is deep fried pork in a Japanese way. Brown Donkatsu offer chicken instead of pork and charge $2 more than pork. It's my first time and would like to try the combo which contain both chicken and pork which is Brown Teishoku. I also pick spicy level 2 (0-3) in the Japanese curry. You saw I gave 5 stars. The chicken is so good and tender, almost melt in my mouth. Pork is so juicy. Last thing is the curry with that #2 spicy kick which keep me digging into it, that is pretty addictive . Definitely will come again and try the cheese stick katsu next time. read more

We normally go to Katsuya down the street but wanted to try a new place. We went on a Thursday night and got seated right away. My wife wanted to inquire about catering and the manager came out and explained everything, she was very nice. Service was good and fast. Food plating was amazing, everything looked so pretty. This is a better Katsu place than Katsuya, would reccomend. Bathrooms were very clean. And they were playing the best Kpop music! We were so full after leaving, we spent $50 for 2 people and were very satisfied read more

The place was really busy for dine in and take out whole time. The servers were very kind and quick, owner was very friendly. The food came quick. Donkatsu and all the other fried foods were very light, crispy and fresh. Portion was huge. The sauce was super flavourful. Noodle soup was boiling hot and it was amazingly great. My criticism is that the meat was paper thin so some of the piece I bite, it was only deep fried shredded bread. And the corn, I think it was frozen corn.. I couldn't have second bite of it. All in all, It was good experience. read more

Came here for a weekday dinner. I got the katsudon while my friend opted for the Netsu ramen. We also got some appetizers. The food portion was huge. Really good value for money. Flavor was definitely there. The cheese corn appetizer was tasty. Chasu appertizer was porky and soft. My friend opted for a mild spicy level for her ramen and it was decently spicy, so watch out!! Would definitely come back and try other things on the menu. Service was a bit slow. But overall, great experience. read more

I ordered the chicken and pork chop brown teishoku. The chops are thin and tasty. Portions is pretty big though and I'lol have to take a pork chop to go. Highly recommended. This restaurant for me is not just the best katsu restaurant but also the best restaurant in the city. Despite being a bit pricey, the portion is so generous that you can have your food for three separate meals. I always get the Teishoku one. The only problem is that the restaurant does not have many tables for dining in, so you may have to wait during busy times. There is only space for 3-4 people to wait in the restaurant. However, there is always a takeout option available. read more
