Afghan Choopan is one of the few/limited restaurants in the greater Seattle area serving Afghan food. I am not an expert, so I would take this review from a casual diner's perspective. Located off the busy Bothell Way near Yakima's fruit stand, Afghan Choopan is tucked further inwards with outdoor seating and indoor seating. The inside is richly decorated with posters, outfits, and more. They have jewelry for sale. We left the movie theater and decided to go try them. I called them from the car to check if I need a reservation and/or if they are busy. The man who answered asked how many people. I said four, and we can be there in 10 to 15 minutes. He replied with some irritation saying I should have called earlier for reservations. I asked again if they are busy. He replied again that I should have called sooner. We hung up, and I have no idea if I made a reservation or rather they are busy. Anyway, we arrived to find a mostly empty parking lot. Inside, 3 tables were occupied with many empty tables. We surmised they must have wanted to close early as the other tables were wrapping up their meals. This was about 7:15 to 7:30. They close at 9. We did not wander in at 8:30 or even 8 for a restaurant closing at 9. The strange service continues. We were seated and given menus. Two female servers were soon cleaning the vacated tables. Our menus were down, and we were chatting. They continued to clear, clean, and set two vacated tables. We looked at each other wondering if they are not waitstaff and only buses tables. If they want us gone sooner, then they need to take our orders sooner. A bit later, a scruffy-looking man wearing flannels who looks like he woke up from a nap (the hair on the back of his head is literally standing up like he just got out of bed) appears at our table to take our order. He was plenty polite and cordial. Then he walks away, and we never saw him again for the rest of the night. It is clear he is the person who answered the phone. The two female servers delivered the food, well, more like tossed the food at one corner of the table. We obediently passed plates and food around to each other. For three rounds (soup, appetizer, and main courses), they stood at the same corner putting the food down at the same spot, then we are expected to pass it along. Then we are asked to repeat the process returning empty soup bowls, empty plates back to that same corner to be collected. Mind you, the aisles are not narrow; walking around the table is not an issue. We looked at each other and just laughed. We told our friend seated at that corner, "They must like you." The Food: Boolani ("Stuffed Bread"), $13.00 - 3 Stars Menu: Afghan flat bread stuffed with mashed potatoes, green onion and chives, served with yogurt sauce made of mint, garlic, and salt and a side of spicy chutney sauce. (Online menu says $11.) This was very good -- for the middle only. The two ends had little to no filling. I have had another version of this where it was much better stuffed. Lamb Qabuli Pallaw, $24.00 - 3 Stars Menu: The most famous dish in Afghanistan comes with perfectly steamed rice grains that shine like little pearls and a lamb leg or shank meat. Served with brown basmati rice topped with fried raisins and carrots. (Online menu says $18 only.) The lamb meat was tender and flavorful, but a touch dry on the outside as though it should have been served with in its own meat sauce. The "rice grains that shine like little pearls" were not on the plate at all. Meanwhile, a heaping pile of basmati rice buried the lamb shank. It was a bit odd but ok. Meat Combo, $19.00 - 3.5 Stars Menu: A meat and veggies combo that includes Chicken Korma with Qabuli Pallaw rice, Bandnjan (eggplant) and Naan (fresh bread). (Online menu says $17.) They offer to switch rice or eggplant with any of their other veggies. I chose cauliflower. The combination of both eggplant and cauliflower on the plate was oily, so I kept the plate tilted. The chicken was fairly dry. I mashed it with my fork and ate it with the saucy eggplant/cauliflower mix. It was tasty that way. The naan was a good size piece. Their version is dryer than Indian naan without butter/ghee applied. Lentil soup, free - included with entrees. This simple soup was quite tasty.

It's an hidden gem very near ti Bothell Downtown. A very cute and cozy place to be in. Food is very good. We went to for lunch their and first we were offered with a complimentary soup and it was delicious . Then we ordered sabji , naan , Baloni , lamb kebab and all were delicious . Lamb was tender and looked like it was cooked for hours . They have books for kids and some toys for kids to enjoy as surprise .

This was my first time trying Afghan food and I'm so glad I tried it here! I ordered take out and got the chicken kabob plate and the bolani. I wasn't sure if I would like the rice based off the description (I've never had raisins in rice before) but honestly found myself wanting more when I ate the last one, haha! It complimented the rice and chicken spices really well. Loved the entree. The bolani was SO good, highly recommend! It's a yummy bread filled with spices and comes with 2 dipping sauces (the white one was my fav).

My friends and I wanted to try something different than what were used to AND also meet halfway as we lived relatively far from one another. This restaurant was one of the few places that caught our eyes, and we decided to it out! It's located next to the Yakima Fruit Market & Nursery on NE Bothell Way in Bothell. The restaurant could be easily missed as my group went straight to the market after missing the turn into the restaurant's parking lot LOL. There are signs but very discreet. There's two parking areas: one on the bottom and another on top. Lots of parking spaces! The restaurant looks look a house both exteriorly and interiorly, which can be very misleading if not for the tables set up. We had a choice to sit indoors or outdoors, and my group chose to dine outside as it was a beautiful day. The menu was kind of overwhelming to us as we didn't know what to really order LOL. My group and I settled for the Small Group Kebob Combo as it seemed like it came with basically everything we were looking at. Go big or go home! We had an option to pick what appetizers and vegetable we wanted. We chose the Mantu as our appetizer and the Dal-Subzi (lentil spinach) as our vegetable. The first thing that came out was the lentil soup. Mmm! It was very flavorful that the first bite was different from all the lentil soups I've had. Lots of "neutral" spices added in with the lentils. Next, the Mantu came out and was delicious! The yogurt was a great addition with its acidity to the savory. And there was more yogurt drizzled on to the meat dishes! Everything came all at once and there was soooo much food (peep at last pic). There was salad, lamb, beef patties, chicken skewers, rice, and naan bread. Everything was delicious! The rice was super unique to me as it had raisins and more of a broken rice unlike Asian cuisine. The naan was HUUUGE. Everyone enjoyed it with the meat dishes and basically had little rice with the amount of naan served. Each meat dish was unique in their own way with different spices and flavors mixed into each one. My favorite was the ground beef skewer (in the middle of the chicken and lamb plate) as it had a ton of spices that worked so nicely together. My boyfriend's and another friend's favorite was the chicken skewer as it closely resembled curry flavor. The lamb dishes didn't have a terrible gamey flavor and cooked perfectly! Everything was delicious! I loved how there was a great balance between vegetables and proteins and carbs! None of us had ever had Afghan cuisine. Trying this was very eye opening to exploring a new cuisine. If I had to describe it, the presentation of the foods were similarly to Mediterranean cuisine but the flavor was a mixture of that and somewhat Indian cuisine (not as heavily spiced tho). It was super unique! Definitely a hidden gem hidden in Bothell! Great place for huge groups as there was tables that can seat up to 15 people. AND they have combos that can serve up to that many people on the menu.

I just ordered a dumpling (mantu) and it's all onion with no meat inside. Not sure what kind of restaurant is this cheap with food but that's not okay as I was craving it like no other. Please add more meat and stop ripping people off. I called to let them know and they spoke in Farsi and thought I couldn't understand! The woman had the audacity to tell me, the cook said " I'm the first to complain that there's no meat" well thank god for photos bc I don't see any meat and the cook didn't state anything, the rude old lady in the front did. Horrible customer service.

The reviews don't lie - the food here is excellent! I ordered through DoorDash and got an estimate of about 45 mins - my food was ready in under 15! This was okay for me since it was nearby but something to keep in mind if you're planning around an order. There was nobody dining inside when I picked up my food (it was 7:30pm on a Wednesday). We got the okra (bamya) entree and the veggie combo with lentils & spinach (Daal Sabzi). The veggie combo is the way at to go in my opinion, if you're ordering veg. You get to try a variety and it already comes with naan and rice - otherwise for entrees you pay extra for either. As mentioned, the food was GREAT! I am 100% returning for more :)

Ate at the restaurant and takeout with Uber Eats. Restaurant: we have been to Preservation Kitchen hundreds of times, so decor was as expected. The place was empty and seating only in the previous bar area but they don't serve alcohol. Sitting at the same place I used to grab beers, made me want a beer. We ordered the meatballs, dumplings, lamb dish, and eggplant. All were really well seasoned and yummy! The eggplant was not heavy with oils or butter, fantastic! Sometimes eggplant dishes can be a bit heavy but they hit it out of the park. The dumplings were amazing, wish we would have done two orders. The meatballs were also really yummy, would order all three in a heartbeat. Our only complaint is the food was served luke warm, I keep thinking how fantastic it could have been if it was hot. Server was a nice guy, did his job well. Overall, 3/5 stars for the cold food and no alcohol. UBER eats : no issues, tasted like restaurant and they come in containers that are easily heated in the oven. Plus I can enjoy a glass of red wine with your amazing food. 5/5 stars. They deliver to Cairn brewing. Primary flaw: no alcohol, we traveled in a lot of countries that have alcohol against their primary religion (and Utah ), they still serve alcohol to western folks (against their religion and country law). I highly, highly, highly recommend the owners select two or three local beers to serve and two local wines (white and red). Costco has a number of good ones you can buy for 6 to 10 dollars a bottle, sell them for $6 to $7 a glass. Keep it to local WA wine, don't serve Sutterhome, Barefoot, etc. Recommendations: serve a few options of wine and beer (the margins are so good and will increase traffic to the restaurant). Lastly, warm up the food a bit more, maybe prewarm plates. I wish this business great success, we are local and within walking distance. We will come back when you serve alcohol.

Outstanding food, great value. We have had several Afghan meals over our life, and this one might have been the best. Other times I have have gone out for afghan quite frankly it has been so spicy that it's difficult for me to eat it. Not here. Packed with flavor, allowing you to add heat if you want it. We got the small family platter ($100). It was perfect for our family of five. The vegetarian appetizers were fantastic. The pallow rice moist and fluffy. The naan warm, moist, and crispy on the outside. The meats all roasted to perfection. The salad light and refreshing. Overall an A+. Will return again. read more

This is such a charming place! Clearly run by a family who is working hard to serve their customers. They are generous with their delicious food...Complimentary soup at the start of the meal, and home-made in their tandoor na'an included in the cost of many of their meals. I would have gladly paid more. The eggplant was AMAZING, the rice was more fluffy than any I've ever tasted, my husband loved the lamb. Truly a gem. I'm so glad we tried this place, and excited to return soon. read more

Two summers ago, I purchased food from ACC food truck at the Lake City Farmers' Market. They informed me that they would be moving into the Bothell area. I had been meaning to purchase from them for a long time but Sunday is our "order out" day-- and they're not open Sundays! Tonight was the night. My only complaint is that in "special instructions" I requested "no yogurt sauce, please" on both dishes i ordered... but both had it. I wonder if this is more a problem with Grub Hub than with the restaurant itself. Otherwise, food was delicious! read more

Very traditional Afghan apparently. It was good, smaller portions but the prices are very reasonable. Very young and casual staff. Ask what something is and they will say "I don't know" Our waiter, young kid said "it's just some white stuff"....pretty hilarious. It's interesting, let's put it that way. No wine, beer or spirits. Good food, annoying cameras. The cameras point at you while you are eating and shine a light on and off to remind you. Food was warm, not hot. TVs aren't my thing while dining, but they turn them off if you ask. A bit expensive for what you get, but good as takeaway. read more

One of a kind ethnic food on the east side. We ordered the chapli kebab, bolani, naan and the dumplings. Good amount of food for two to share. Service was awesome. I would definitely go back considering that the food was super duper flavorful. read more

Food was good but everyone felt the portions were very small for the price. It feels kind of bad spending $20+ per person and leaving hungry. I should also note that the menu prices on their website are not the same as the actual menu prices (everything was roughly 10% higher than what was listed online). Actually looking at the menu again the chicken korma I ordered should've come with naan which I didn't get. Also while I'm sure it's not normally like this there was a blowtorch left unattended both next to the fireplace (which seems like a hazard putting a canister of fuel next to a fireplace) and it was also next to some kids toys. read more

I finally made it here to check it out. There were very few diners when we walked in however more people arrived once we got there. The food was absolutely amazing, however I wish the temperature on everything with a little hotter. The lentils soup they bring out first was so good. I ordered the vegetarian platter and by far my favorite was the baked eggplant. I will probably order this as a stand-alone dish next time. My husband ordered chicken and my son ordered the lamb. My son was especially pleased with his dish. read more

The Food was ok. The issue was the service or lack thereof. We waited half hour before we were even given water. When we walked in we did order appetizers, which took about an hour to come to our table. We ordered the food about 7 and it took another hour the actually entrees to arrive. Then about cups, plates, or anything else you needed they didn't have them for us. So literally we were eating our food on tea cup saucers. The mango lassi was $7 and was not even that good. If you are having food delivered maybe you might get it within 2 hours, but not worth sitting in the restaurant for 2.5 hours to get food. read more

Pretty pricey for location and quantity but the quality is good. The kofta and beef chapli were mouth watering, the lamb qabli pallaw, while good, isn't as great as some of the other Afghan places around town. I didn't care much for the chicken kabab but others in our party thought it's great, esp. for a chicken kabab...since they can get dry and chewey, but not a problem here. The boolani was a great appetizer option for the table. I sure hope they address review concerns and the price to quantity ration, because would love to see this place flourish. read more

Food was ok but the fries where not fresh and the pita bread was not warm. We ate at the restaurant and there was not eating utensils I had to use a to go plastic fork :( I try very hard to not use plastic and having to use plastic on a restaurant does not make sense. Also my girlfriend is not familiar with Greek food so I grabbed a menu for her, but there was no description of the food! Prices reasonable Food okay read more

A very nice meal and super attentive staff. Environment was warm and comfortable and we were paid a visit by a gentleman who was either the owner or manager and he seemed sincerely appreciative of our feedback and our decision to have a meal there. There hasn't been a more intimate setting to share a meal with friends. We had Lentil soup, Boolani, Mantu, and Lamb Qabuli Pallaw. To say we feasted is an understatement. I'm not very familiar with Afghan cuisine but the food was a taste of home I never knew. Lets start with the Boolani it was hot right out of the oven, you could taste the chives just by the aroma it gave off. The Mantu.. these stuffed dumplings are heaven on earth. Trust when I say just order these for your next potluck. It's a game changer. And Finally the Lamb. Wow i've never tasted lamb so soft and tender over a rice and carrot plate. I will return, with friends and family. This place is amazing. read more

I've ordered from these guys a couple times before, everything was typically alright, and the food was good. I ordered lunch today at ~3:00PM (based on Yelp, it is supposed to be open up until 8:00PM): got a confirmation they received my order, and it should be ready "within 20-40 minutes". I came there in 30 minutes to find the restaurant door locked. I knocked the door - no result. I called their line, the operator confirmed the restaurant is supposed to work, tried calling the manager, but couldn't locate him/her. I don't know what happened, but my today's experience is frustrating. read more

Appears to be a family-owned restaurant. Food is good, but the no frills establishment could benefit from an interior design consult that better complements the cuisine. Matching light bulbs and perhaps some Afghan music would be a good start. Serving staff are attentive and friendly but have non-standard protocols. Recommend giving them a try, just not near closing time, as they close on time. read more

This overpriced restaurant has some of the worst food I've ever had. I tried 3 things, the chicken korma, the lamb kabob wrap, and the halal burger. The korma was WATERY! The lamb was FLAVORLESS and OVERPRICED! The burger was SOUR! DO NOT EAT HERE! I spent 45$ and it ruined my day. read more

A new place with a a potential to be good place in future, but honestly TOO MUCH work needs to be done. 1- i LOVE the idea that the restaurant is nothing but a house, so with proper furniture they can give it the cozy style ( currently its not) 2- they need a better sign to tell that we are here because if you are only driving by you will never come to know that there is a restaurant here so their only customers will be people who are intentionally going there. 3- they need to heat the place, it is super cold. 4- the host welcome you with a big smile, but then disappears, we waited for 10 mins to have the menus 5- the place is tooooo quiet, no music in the background which make it awkward that everyone can hear us. 6-after getting the menu we literally were looking for the guy for more than 10 mins to place the order, basically one guy was serving more than 10 tables and probably helping with the food, i dont know because he wasn't there at all. Bottom line they are so understaffed. 7- they need to be more knowledgeable about the menu, for example they have to know if this dish comes with salad or rice or both, it appeared to us that this wasn't clear for them. 8- after placing the order, the food came in a decent time ( good thing). 9- we had lamb kabab, chicken kabab and bolani. The bolani is good. Chicken is good, the lamb is tasty but a bit overcooked. The rice is just ok, needs more spices for sure. 10- portions are too small for the prices, since their prices are more than other similar restaurant. 11- restrooms are on the 2nd floors which is fine for young people but how about seniors ? Not all can go 10-15 upstairs steps. 12- the way to the restroom is messy, even there was a slipper under one of the tables!! Really nice and larger place. Service was excellent and friendly. My first time eating afghan food and I was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the chicken kabob wrap. It was very large. And full of trendier seasoned chicken and vegetables. I also enjoyed the lentils soap. Fair price for all the food we were served. read more

You guys, this place is delicious!! I stopped in on a whim and am so glad I did. I'm in love with their dough (a salty mint yogurt drink), the lentil soup was lovely, and the boolani was like a magical fluffier version of stuffed naan! Yum! The service was very warm and welcoming (maybe a father and son?), the space is beautiful, all its missing is more people (and maybe beer ;). Go check it out!! read more

Delicious food. Quietly elegant furniture. A fire in the winter makes it a little cozier. There is a patio I hope they open in the summer. The meat pallow (a bit like Biryani) was excellent and filling. The dumplings were yummy but not filling. It all comes with lentil soup my dad declared the best soup ever. read more

I have avoided Zeitoon all these years because they are higher cost, not necessarily justifiable since there are lower cost Persian foods or similar Mediterranean restaurants in the area. I finally decided to try them. Our server answered my questions, including his favorites. Two questionable/sketchy things happened: 1. Our server recommended the Mirza Ghasemi, which he said is great with the optional soft-boiled egg. Sounds good. We ordered it. The optional egg is $2, which is not identified on the menu. (See photo) 2. When he recommended the Mirza Ghasemi, we asked him to remove the Mast O Khiar which we initially chose. I said we only want one appetizer. He nodded and said OK. When the Mirza Ghasemi arrived, so did the Mast O Khiar. They put both on the table and immediately left. I flagged the original server to remind him we said to remove it, but a different person showed up instead. He: "You want to cancel this? No problem." and took the yogurt away. I did not order this; it is not me canceling. Minus 0.5 stars from overall rating. The Food: Mirza Ghasemi + egg, $14 +$2 - 2.5 Stars This eggplant dish is the one recommended by our server. Other than the bland and dry rice, my only other nitpick would be that the jjajangmyeon came out a lot later than the other dishes. Otherwise we paid around $117 (without tip), for five dishes and two appetizers, which I think is pretty good for this area.

I also appreciate the warm and the cold belt separately. The cheese wontons and puffs were certainly the highlight of the place. As well as the tutti fruttti (or something) roll - its the roll filled with fruit and topped with a mango sauce. The fish varied in freshness and most folks at the table agreed that the seaweed had an odd taste to it that we don't normally see at sushi places. The mango cake on the dessert menu was the worst - so fake tasting and not even as cold as I thought it should be for a cake with cream. I may come back here but wasn't impressed.

the chicken kabob plate is SO GOOD. the best restaurant in the entire seattle area. the food is authentic and fresh, and even their mango lassi and fries taste totally fresh. their chicken palow was the only bad dish. everything else was absolutely fantastic. read more
