    Lamb Dish. It was amazing.
    Mo Y.

I had dinner at this place for the first time . It is hard to tell that there used to be an African restaurant there. They need time do something about the sign or add another sign on the front window mentioning African Food. The lamb dish was beyond amazing and the service was the best. The lady that Owns the place was extremely friendly. It was such a beautiful experience having such a delicious dish with African music too. I love this place and I will be back.

Food: Okra Soup / Soup Kanja palm oil, fresh okra pods, seafood, beef and vegetables and served with a choice of rice or fufu. Service: Food is freshly made to order so don't come here if you're in a hurry. Friendly. Ambiance: seating is mainly for 2-4 people from what I could tell. Finally found a Nigerian spot out in this way! Soup was delicious! My friend got Lamb Dibi (sorry didn't get a pic) but it was flavorful and tender! Jollof rice was delicious as well. I'll be back!

This place specializes in African food, specifically West African, more on Gambia and Senegal to be precise. I went here with a friend on a Monday dinner and there was ample seating - just pick and choose where you want. There are a few issues which is why I leave a 3 stars, as opposed to a 5 stars with regards to how delicious the food is: 1. Wait times for food are painstakingly long. If I waited for the server to take our order, we would have waited 25 minutes to put the order in. So we placed and paid the order online and was quoted 30 minutes for the food to be ready. In the end, it was close to 1 hour wait. 2. Prices online are way higher than the menu I saw in person. Lamb didi in the menu was $16.99 while I paid $22 before tax and tip online. I felt a bit ripped off, seeing the discrepancy, so I was not as inclined to tip more as the prices online felt like they were inclusive of gratuity, and even accounting for any surcharges to operate transactions online We got the lamb didi with fried plantains and the domoda with findi. The lamb is nicely chopped and grilled, with the fried plantains extra flavorful with some added crispiness. The price was high given we only got 5 tiny lamb pieces. This same goes for domoda, which is a Gambian peanut stew - only a few tiny pieces of beef. However, the peanut stew is amazing and the findi (a smaller version of couscous) is a good pairing for the dish. Prices are high for what you get, though the food is delicious. Again, online ordering felt like a huge rip off compared to placing an order in person, if you manage to be patient and have lots of time. That is my biggest complaint, but I would not rule against trying this place out as the food is something you won't really be able to get that commonly elsewhere, and knowing to order 1+ hr before your intended meal time would be a good idea.

A friend invited to try this place out. I've never had West African food before, so this is a first for me. I'm surprised to find this place so close to me. And I have to say that I got to give this place some love because the food is pretty solid. So first off, the place is pretty small. I remember this place use to be a teriyaki shop, but I guess COVID got them and now it's become this West African restaurant that I would like to go to more often. So I ordered the Benachin because I saw the pictures online and it immediately got my attention. Rice is nice! My friend got the Lamb Dibi which he split with me which is a funny story actually. His order didn't get submitted for some reason and we were waiting forever for it. We asked the service about it and they told us what happened, so he got his dish pretty late. We ended up sharing both of our dishes which was kind of nice cause I got to try the Lamb. Both dishes were really good. Fries could be better, but you're really not here for the fries. A very unique cuisine with unique flavors. I enjoyed this place a lot. I highly recommend checking it out. The food is delicious and it's nice to try an unfamiliar cuisine. Also, it's good to support your local hole-in-the-wall restaurants, especially if they be hitting you with that flavor.

I wanted to love this place, but just couldn't. Service was incredibly slow, it took forever for them to take our order and about 45 minutes until we received our food. We had to remind them several times - the restaurant was not even busy. The soups were incredibly oily, to the point that you couldn't taste the actual flavors of the dish

Lamb Dibi: grilled well-marinated bone in lamb ($16.99).

Amazing African cuisine is served here but be prepared for a long wait after placing orders at the front counter. Inside had ample seating but only a couple of tables were occupied on a Saturday mid-afternoon. It took at least forty minutes before our food was served. A party that was already seated when we arrived had been waiting for over an hour, and another had not received their take-out order past the estimated pickup time. Upset tables cancelled their orders and left. We chose from the Signature Dishes which includes a choice of small salad, side of rice, Vermicelli, sweet potato fries, regular fries, or fried plantains. Both were flavorful, well-portioned, and had tender meat. ----- Lamb Dibi: grilled well-marinated bone in lamb ($16.99). ----- Benachin: Jollof rice choice of fish or lamb ($16). ----- Although the food took a while to come, the staff was apologetic for the slowness. Outside has a parking lot with enough spaces.

I love my African cuisine. Customer service was awesome. Thank you for being patient and explaining all the food variations. Will be back.

This was my first time trying and so glad it was a great experience. The selection was good I looked at their menu online to see photos of what I was ordering and the food came out looking exactly like what was pictured. The flavor was rich and I liked how each dish came with a small salad. I got the lamb Dibi with plantain and a side of jollof rice (not pictured) and my friend and I split the meat and shrimp pies. Everything was seasoned well and just delicious. The service was friendly and prompt. The ambiance is nice it's quaint with beautiful artwork placed about. The restaurant was not very crowded, but there were tons of to go orders going out. My friend really enjoyed her food as well. We will be back for sure. Happy to support!

My first time at an authentic African restaurant. This is a full service restaurant. I ordered take out as I was on my way to the airport to go home to NJ. I could kick myself for not finding this place earlier in my stay. It smelled so good in the restaurant and there were so many tasty sounding items on the menu. I ordered the okra stew w/fufu and jollof rice. The smells coming from the bag were too tempting. I actually stopped so I could get a taste of the stew. If I would have had the time I would have eaten it all right there on the side of the road. So delicious. I did not like the fufu. Never had it before, so I don't think it was the restaurant's fault. I am going to Africa in January, I will come back and update if the fufu is better. Once I got to the airport, I tore into the jollof rice. Tasty, but better once I mixed it with the okra stew. Overall, delicious and I will definitely go back when I am in the Seattle area again.

I haven't had much West African food in the past so when we were looking for some new food to try…read moreout over the weekend, we came across Bantaba. As other reviews state, this is kind of a strange restaurant that seems more like it's for regulars rather than new customers. There's no actual printed menu other than hints of a menu on the signboard above the register (and we confirmed this with the cashier). I guess this is to save on cost, which coincidentally also allows them to adjust pricing on the fly? There are photos posted of the menu from 2024, but my guess is those are of an old pre-COVID menu, given that the prices increased over 50% at this point. Per other reviews, dine-in orders are also packaged in takeout boxes and can take a variable amount of time to cook. We don't usually get takeout much, but decided to call in an order for this visit. This was at around 5PM on Saturday and we were promised a 30 minute wait. We arrived 30 minutes later, paid for the order, and it ended up taking about another 10 minutes. Not too bad. Benechin Beef ($18.99) - As I learned, benechin is essentially a different term for the more commonly known (at least in the US) jollof rice. In this case, the rice has a deep tomato and spiced umami that combines a pleasant saltiness with a heat level that builds and builds. It's topped with a small side of cabbage that seems to be stewed in the same spices as the rice. There's then a piece of yucca root, stewed but still rather toothsome with fiber strands all in one direction like muscle grains. For the beef, they include four pieces of thinly sliced barbecued meat. The meat is extremely flavorful with what seems to be a black pepper and allium based spice mixture. In terms of texture, it's quite tough and chewy, almost to the level of beef jerky. (4/5) Afra Lamb ($20.99) - This dish comes with a choice of rice or salad, not both as the older menu states. We went with the rice which comes in a smaller container and is a long grain rice cooked until perfectly fluffy. It's cooked with salt, which is something that I'm not used to. The larger container includes a mound of bone-in lamb meat doused in a savory and tangy mustard based sauce. The meat is a very interesting mixture of off-cuts, a combination of cross-cut ribs, shanks, lamb chops, and some random other cuts. The lamb is mostly bone in and there are tons of small bone shards all over the meat, making it a bit of a pain to eat. The meat isn't very gamey and all and is much more tender as compared to the beef jerky in the benechin. On top of the lamb, they include mustard infused softened onions and whole quick-charred onion rings, resulting in a still crunchy texture. They include some powdered dried chilis is a small pile hidden under the onions. Be careful - it's starts out smoky like paprika to start and the heat only starts to build after a couple of seconds. (4/5) Bantaba is a great place to try some new food. While it's not the most beginner friendly restaurant, it offers some flavors and dishes that are hard to find around Seattle. Plenty of parking in the plaza. Plates can feel pricey, but quality and large portions makes it worth it. Gyro and pitas for the smaller appetites. While not dry, taking bits of the tzatziki sauce with the rice and meat helps add a juicy flavor and texture. On the side is a hearty Greek salad that has a similar effect, the vegetables are super fresh and help the rest of the plate taste juicier plus adds a nice crunch on the lettuce. They don't bake any in house, but the have a small section of various Lebanese pitas, some Persian barbari, even lavash and taftoon, all from local bakeries. All that to say, expect to wait a long time to order and to get your food order, depending on how busy they are. Their service, well rather how long you wait to order and get your food, is really the biggest downside. Since we came 2 hours before closing, they were out of the shawarma which we really wanted to try. We ordered fries and Ali's special, and waiting 50 minutes to get our order. The cashier was really nice and apologetic about it but wow 50 minutes is a long time to wait for food. However, the food did not disappoint! We'll be back to try the shawarma another time but I hope service gets better.

Now since moving to Seattle, I've been on the hunt for a similar market and Mmarket seemed to fit the bill. This is a small market that most importantly (for me at least) has a small kitchen pumping out classic Iraqi dishes, and also the typical Iraqi breads. Iraqi-Style Beef Kabob ($2.99) - They only had beef kabobs available when I stopped by. They grill the kabobs over a normal gas grill rather than the more traditional charcoal. The temperature and cook time seems to be a bit lacking as there isn't really any developed char or smoky flavors. The smell is almost gamey, but the texture is very tender, and the taste is mild with some allium notes. Charring would greatly improve the anemic appearance and taste of the meat. They serve the kabobs on a wheat pita and for some reason do not include any charred tomatoes, onions, etc that this would normally come with. This is probably the only place to get Iraqi-style kabobs in the area, so I can't complain too much. (3/5) Hummus ($4.99) - This is served in an 8 oz container and they add olive oil and sumac on top before handing it over. The hummus is a bit coarse and has a somewhat strong earthier flavor than a lot of other hummus. Still, this seems to be relatively fresh, without the taste of lemon or preservatives. That's a win in my book, for an area not known for Middle Eastern food. (3/5) Mmarket also sells bags filled with khubz and samoon, which according to the owner, isn't baked on site, but at a bakery nearby. Next time I visit I'll need to ask if that bakery is accessible to the public, just so I can get the freshest bread right from the tanoor, assuming they use one rather than a commercial oven. I gave Mmarket a 3/5 purely because the only comparison point I have is with the Iraqi markets in Dearborn. Let's be real, outside of a select few regions in the US, 90% of "Middle-Eastern" (aka "Mediterranean") food is some abomination of Americanized Greek food mixed with food from the Levant. Of the more authentic 10%, 90% of those restaurants focus on Lebanese cuisine. That last 1% includes places like Mmarket - places that serve authentic food from a specific country in the Middle East. While the execution of the food here is more grocery-store level than restaurant-level, for anyone who wants a taste of real Iraqi food, Mmarket is probably the best in the area. While I wouldn't get the prepared food again, I would come back for the khubz specifically since I don't think there's anywhere else near Seattle that has it for sale.
