Everything arrived fresh and hot! * The Fried Tilapia: Absolutely incredible. It was fresh, cooked perfectly, and super flavorful. I completely fell in love with it and will 100% order it again. * The Sides & Drinks: The French fries were just okay... I probably could have passed on them. I also tried the Bisap/Wonjo (Hibiscus Juice); I honestly didn't really know what it was, but it just wasn't for me or my taste buds. Food was good, a little too oily & thin for my liking but the flavor was good & meat was nice and tender. I had gotten the goat egusi with fufu. My husband got the oxtail soup with rice and he said the oxtail did have a lot more fat than meat on them but they were cooked perfectly. I had the oxtail entrée served with fufu, and it was absolutely incredibly tender, perfectly seasoned, and don't forget to pair it with the fufu. The plantains were sweet, caramelized, and super addictive. Every bite was a celebration of authentic African flavors. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff treats you politely. Stopped in for lunch with my sister. We had wanting to try this place. It was a midday. It's nice a clean with plenty of floor space. Our initial server was nice but we were passed off to someone else. She came by once when our waters were around 3/4 full and asked if we wanted a refill. We both passed on the refill at that time, then never came back until asking if we needed boxes. I normally wouldn't be annoyed too much by this, but I think one other booth had one person seating in the whole restaurant and I think one person stopped in to pick up food. We sat and waited for her to bring the bill, but instead she later came by to pick up our plates. She then directed us that you pay at the front(which would have been good to know for the 10 minutes we just sat there). Food was great. I had the fish(Golden Pompano) along with the vegetables which were sited onions and veggies that gave it a little spice. The food here is great and my sister and I are considering a second time since there were many things that sounded good on the menu. But the service really crippled this place. A place discovered during a recent search for African cuisine near Everett, this restaurant was a surprising find despite its good reviews and noticeable presence. My friend and I visited around 6 PM on a Friday evening and were the sole diners at the time in the spacious establishment. Parking is street-only, so plan accordingly. Inside, the restaurant is large with ample seating. We started with appetizers: the Fried Plantains were delicious, and the Beef Samosas were also enjoyable. For our main dishes, we tried the Golden Pompano from the Grill, which was good overall but a touch too salty for our preference, and the Dibi Afra/Suya (Grilled Lamb), which was tasty, though some pieces had a fair amount of fat. The house-made drinks were highlights: the Bouye (Baobab Juice) was very good, as was the Ginger Pineapple Juice. Portion sizes here are enormous. One person with a large appetite might finish a plate solo, but sharing is highly recommended. We took our leftovers home and still had enough food for another full meal the next day. The beverage selection drink, can't recall the name, was a delicious add with the meal. We order in house to take to go. A little disappointed. From reviews, I was very excited to try Heritage. Unfortunately, a few dishes missed the mark. Chicken Yassa was flavorful although oily and over salted. Jollof rice was good. They only had seafood fataya pies- tasted good (imitation crab and shrimp seasoned with black pepper). Plantains-simple and tasty. The biggest let down was the okra stew. I found it very unpleasant, filled with lots of tiny bones and flavor wasn't there for me as well as the texture was off putting. I am very familiar with okra, but this slimy level was not good. Unusually for us, we already knew exactly what we wanted. There are lots of grilled and stewed meats and fishes here, and it's pretty easy to figure out what you want. Fataya pies (beef) These will be pretty familiar to many of us, 'cause they're pretty similar to handpies that are popular in many cultures. The crust on these is crackery on top, and a bit chewier under. The seasonings are not dialed up to mind-blowing levels, but they're very delicious. They were the first thing I tried, and I didn't even stop to think until about my third bite that they're served with, essentially, a creamy aioli. I'm not saying this is an Americanized dish--I wouldn't know--but it's a super tasty and very easy way to dip your toe in the water here. Akara Bean fritters. Unbelievably light and airy, perfect golden-brown crust. Whatever the "red stew" that comes with them is, I could eat that every day. They serve it an an entree with lamb or chicken, too! Chicken yasa Lots of green olives and big seasonings in this. Served chopped rustically on the bone. Onions underneath, white rice on the side. Gone in nothing flat. Oxtails Buttery rich pot roast on the bone, in my opinion. At least that's the flavor and texture. The seasonings in this reminded me somewhat of really good, really complex birria. With that being said, it makes the parking just a little hard to find. I have to say, one of the best African food I've had and I've been to many. The portion was a a lot bigger than most places. I've wanted to try this restaurant for a long time since I enjoy international cuisine and new foods, and I must say I was unexpectedly disappointed. First impression walking in: I was a bit underwhelmed! With ALL the rich, vibrant colors and textiles that I associate with African culture, the space was rather bland, industrial, with only a sampling of some paintings of African women but mostly bare, white walls. No authentic music; it was contemporary. I was definitely not transported to Africa. The menu looked extensive, and it took a while for my 2 dinner mates and I to decide on what to order. When the waitress arrived, we were told that nearly half of the main entrees were not available, there was no more chicken and beef available for ANY main dishes - including all of our 1st choices! This was at 5:30PM (early in the evening), and the kitchen should have been stocked up. All three of us had to re-order after hearing this. Total confusion and some frustration. I ordered the Mafe (peanut butter stew) but had to settle for lamb due to the protein shortages. I don't really care for lamb, and the meat in the stew was bony and tough. I picked a few chunks of meat off but hardly ate any of it. Pluses: The Baobab juice was delicious; the pataya rolls were very tasty. The entire experience was kind of a dud, to be honest. At the end of our meal, I asked my dining mates if they would want to return - and we all agreed that we would not- so sorry to say since I am rooting for restaurants SUCH AS THIS to thrive in Everett. So, I got the Fataya Pies Beef, Chicken and Seafood. The beef was dry no flavor, the chicken was very dry had ok flavor but filling was a small amount. The Seafood was the best in flavor had a good spice but was not anything special. This was my 4th time trying to come to come to this place but first time eating, the reason being they never open at the time they are supposed to. They have their hours for a 11am first 3 times I called to place my order at between 11:10 to 11:30 multiple times and know one picked up This time I decided to go there for there at 11:17am and doors were locked so I had a slice of pizza down the street and came back at 11:25 and they were opening the doors finally. Please change hours or open on time that alone almost made me not even want to come and honestly makes me not want to come back. The goat was so tender it fell off the bone! I wasn't to much of a fan of the juice, but it's only cause it had a slight banana flavor, and I'm not a huge fan of bananas. My mom really liked it. I have never tried African cuisine and decided on a whim to try this place with a friend and I'm already looking forward to trying more! What we ordered. Jollof rice with chicken- the rice is small grain, chicken was mixed with bones(doesn't bother me unless you're an all breast kind of person). It was served with a hot sauce that had a delicious slow burn that added flavor but wasn't just heat, but a flavorful sauce. Oxtail with fufu- the oxtail was fall off the bone, the stew was so good and rich. The fufu is a perfect blank canvas that allows the rich stew to be carried with a muted vessel that balances how rich it is alone. I'm a sucker for sucking the bone and the oxtail gave me all that. Egusi soup with goat and fufu- will look a lot like tofu or eggs super scrambled but to a nice surprise a type of melon/pumpkin seed grounded. It's a perfect nutty and savory dish that every bite gives you another note on the top of your tongue to dance with. Baobab juice - if I can have 10 of these I would. It's creamy but not heavy creamy. You think it'll taste like yogurt but does a slight curve to a light vanilla but fresh fruit esque and I'm obsessed. Definitely a place where there is no rush to get your food asap, relax, catch up with a friend and pace yourself. Our server was very sweet and helpful. The food tastes like it's made with love and soul. It is kind of like a steamed bun, a nice starchy compliment to the soup. My companion had the Dibi Afra and he said it was wonderful as well. This is a great place to try if you want to break out of traditional cuisine. Mama (that's what she said to call her) gave us some guidance and history on the place,sat us down and gave us menus. I ordered the Jollof Rice with Lamb, finally convinced Husbae to eat African food so he tried Oxtail Stew with Fufu. He's not big on eating with his hands but all bets were off when Mama showed him how to eat the Fufu. Slurping and a good time was had. Flavor profiles were amazing. Alright I've been waiting to try a meal from here since the grand opening a few weeks ago, there was a long wait the first time I tried to order tonight we tried to place our order earlier hoping to avoid a long wait. Unfortunately when my wife arrived they informed her that they were out of duck, my wife called and we changed our orders but it took awhile to make sure they had what we wanted guess they are still busy and/or are still figuring out how many people will dine a night. So guess there's a learning curve still happening and communication could be a little better. Ok now the food was delicious my son chose the Golden Pompano for his main I went with Grilled Stuffed Squid and an order of Curry Coconut Mussels, we both got a side Jollof Rice. The stuffed squid came with coleslaw and steamed veggies the filling is moist, nicely seasoned and you get a nice chew from the squid not rubbery. Now the mussels had no sides with them but it was a nice serving it looks huge but the shells add to that appearance, the curry sauce was a little spicy and I could taste lemon grass. Once I had removed the shells I was able to dip the bread in the curry sauce which helped me clean my plate. I was surprised that the Jollof rice was as spicy as it was the heat built up a bit but not too hot really nice flavor not able guess what it's seasoned with but it's something I'd order again for that matter all of what we ordered was very tasty. The location of the restaurant is across from the Everett event center there's been a few other restaurants that for whatever reason haven't been able to survive but I hope this one does if you check out the menu you'll see that theres a good selection to choose from it's nice to have a restaurant that offers this style of cuisine. read more
