    Golden Pompano
    Kathirazhagan A.

A place discovered during a recent search for African cuisine near Everett, this restaurant was a surprising find despite its good reviews and noticeable presence. My friend and I visited around 6 PM on a Friday evening and were the sole diners at the time in the spacious establishment. Parking is street-only, so plan accordingly. Inside, the restaurant is large with ample seating. We started with appetizers: the Fried Plantains were delicious, and the Beef Samosas were also enjoyable. For our main dishes, we tried the Golden Pompano from the Grill, which was good overall but a touch too salty for our preference, and the Dibi Afra/Suya (Grilled Lamb), which was tasty, though some pieces had a fair amount of fat. The house-made drinks were highlights: the Bouye (Baobab Juice) was very good, as was the Ginger Pineapple Juice. Portion sizes here are enormous. One person with a large appetite might finish a plate solo, but sharing is highly recommended. We took our leftovers home and still had enough food for another full meal the next day. Service was efficient and generally "Ok." If you're in the area and looking for flavorful African food with hearty portions, this place definitely falls under the "should go" list.

Restaurant right across street from Angel Winds Arena. Spacious area with separate bar location. Two items weren't available so we decided on a lamb dish and steak sandwich. The beverage selection drink, can't recall the name, was a delicious add with the meal. We order in house to take to go. Plantains were very sweet delicious the lamb was cooked perfectly with the onions and the sauce really enjoyed that meal. It wasn't too many people in the restaurant when we came as it was just getting started for dinner time rush, but we were greeted. Our order was taken and received with great customer service.

A little disappointed. From reviews, I was very excited to try Heritage. Unfortunately, a few dishes missed the mark. Chicken Yassa was flavorful although oily and over salted. Jollof rice was good. They only had seafood fataya pies- tasted good (imitation crab and shrimp seasoned with black pepper). Plantains-simple and tasty. The biggest let down was the okra stew. I found it very unpleasant, filled with lots of tiny bones and flavor wasn't there for me as well as the texture was off putting. I am very familiar with okra, but this slimy level was not good. Restaurant was very clean. Women's Bathroom has a changing pad.

In short Yes, you will get to try stuff you've never had before. But this place is more about the kitchen knocking everything out of the park while you're doing that--it's not the place that has that rare thing, it's the place that does it really well. In long This hasn't been the luckiest location for previous tenants, but if they start serving alcohol, there will be a line out the door for the next 20 years. They're so close to the arena! It's pretty outside, covered in color, and cool and dark inside even on a hot day. A few highboys by the front window, a few stools at the bar (where everything is NA), and then lots of tables farther back. Super friendly staff who are all used to showing people through a menu of new-to-them foods. We chatted with the server for a while, and she was so friendly and sweet. Unusually for us, we already knew exactly what we wanted. There are lots of grilled and stewed meats and fishes here, and it's pretty easy to figure out what you want. Fataya pies (beef) These will be pretty familiar to many of us, 'cause they're pretty similar to handpies that are popular in many cultures. The crust on these is crackery on top, and a bit chewier under. The seasonings are not dialed up to mind-blowing levels, but they're very delicious. They were the first thing I tried, and I didn't even stop to think until about my third bite that they're served with, essentially, a creamy aioli. I'm not saying this is an Americanized dish--I wouldn't know--but it's a super tasty and very easy way to dip your toe in the water here. Akara Bean fritters. Unbelievably light and airy, perfect golden-brown crust. Whatever the "red stew" that comes with them is, I could eat that every day. They serve it an an entree with lamb or chicken, too! Chicken yasa Lots of green olives and big seasonings in this. Served chopped rustically on the bone. Onions underneath, white rice on the side. Gone in nothing flat. Oxtails Buttery rich pot roast on the bone, in my opinion. At least that's the flavor and texture. The seasonings in this reminded me somewhat of really good, really complex birria. It's over 80F here today, and this will probably be the best meal I eat all winter. Absolute comfort food. Senegambia iced tea Much more like pineapple juice than iced tea, but delicious. I might make this at home with rum in it.

I didn't get to dine in, but did order to go. Clean and friendly place. I didn't like how it's setting is around the corner of a 4 way street. With that being said, it makes the parking just a little hard to find. I have to say, one of the best African food I've had and I've been to many. The portion was a a lot bigger than most places. Instead of little cubes of overly cooked dry meat, they had big chunks in it. With the bone on and everything. I ordered the Egusi with fufu and okra stew with fufu. Each protein had goat and fish and boy it was delicious! Did I mention a generous amount to go too? The service was exceptional. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone! Two entrees to go = $56 after tax and tip.

We decided to visit this African restaurant after passing it for several months. Friendly staff We started with beef Fataya pies omgosh these were so delicious they came with a sauce that was bomb!! Steak Shawarma - I ordered the steak shawarma it wasn't flavored very bland tasting and over powered by cucumber. For someone who loves cucumbers you would enjoy this. Oxtail soup - my bf ordered this and loved it. Lots of flavors throughout, he did state there was lot of fat around the meat he wished they had cut off.

Great all the way around! Service was fast, with a smile knowledgeable about the food!!! Food was great! Enjoyed ourselves with Oxtail soup, empanadas, and a grilled chicken sandwich

This place is amazing, best plantains I've ever had. African chicken was sooo flavorful. I came 2 days in a row so I can taste the FuFu and Egusi, which was also great. I may be back this weekend to try the Oxtail. Highly recommend!!!

Out of all the interesting & new choices my son had the Dibi Afra Lamb & I had the Golden Pompano. The lamb was fabulous...don't even try to eat with knife & fork...just pick up & enjoy! I had never had Pompano before. Altho delicious it is quit bony. Served with an outstanding side dish of perfectly seasoned onions. The lamb was served with cold onion strips which were also a great accompaniment. There are no alcoholic drinks. I had the Bisap & my son had the Senegambia Iced tea. Both were refreshing & delicious. Both are huge portions so no room left for dessert...which look awesome. .

The most unique offering and delicious food in the area. Most food is likely cooked previously in large portions and then reheated. None of the food didn't seem to be old, everything tasted fresh. Oxtail and jollof rice! Service was impeccable. Ambiance was a bit cluttered and discombobulated for a large space, but clean and welcoming.

    Tilapia with rice and plantain!

The food is delicious and everyone is very welcoming. I highly recommend trying Heritage African Restaurant!

I haven't had much West African food in the past so when we were looking for some new food to try…read moreout over the weekend, we came across Bantaba. As other reviews state, this is kind of a strange restaurant that seems more like it's for regulars rather than new customers. There's no actual printed menu other than hints of a menu on the signboard above the register (and we confirmed this with the cashier). I guess this is to save on cost, which coincidentally also allows them to adjust pricing on the fly? There are photos posted of the menu from 2024, but my guess is those are of an old pre-COVID menu, given that the prices increased over 50% at this point. Per other reviews, dine-in orders are also packaged in takeout boxes and can take a variable amount of time to cook. We don't usually get takeout much, but decided to call in an order for this visit. This was at around 5PM on Saturday and we were promised a 30 minute wait. We arrived 30 minutes later, paid for the order, and it ended up taking about another 10 minutes. Not too bad. Benechin Beef ($18.99) - As I learned, benechin is essentially a different term for the more commonly known (at least in the US) jollof rice. In this case, the rice has a deep tomato and spiced umami that combines a pleasant saltiness with a heat level that builds and builds. It's topped with a small side of cabbage that seems to be stewed in the same spices as the rice. There's then a piece of yucca root, stewed but still rather toothsome with fiber strands all in one direction like muscle grains. For the beef, they include four pieces of thinly sliced barbecued meat. The meat is extremely flavorful with what seems to be a black pepper and allium based spice mixture. In terms of texture, it's quite tough and chewy, almost to the level of beef jerky. (4/5) Afra Lamb ($20.99) - This dish comes with a choice of rice or salad, not both as the older menu states. We went with the rice which comes in a smaller container and is a long grain rice cooked until perfectly fluffy. It's cooked with salt, which is something that I'm not used to. The larger container includes a mound of bone-in lamb meat doused in a savory and tangy mustard based sauce. The meat is a very interesting mixture of off-cuts, a combination of cross-cut ribs, shanks, lamb chops, and some random other cuts. The lamb is mostly bone in and there are tons of small bone shards all over the meat, making it a bit of a pain to eat. The meat isn't very gamey and all and is much more tender as compared to the beef jerky in the benechin. On top of the lamb, they include mustard infused softened onions and whole quick-charred onion rings, resulting in a still crunchy texture. They include some powdered dried chilis is a small pile hidden under the onions. Be careful - it's starts out smoky like paprika to start and the heat only starts to build after a couple of seconds. (4/5) Bantaba is a great place to try some new food. While it's not the most beginner friendly restaurant, it offers some flavors and dishes that are hard to find around Seattle. By now, we are minor 'pros' and know to bring some patience to West African restaurants. Entrees generally take about 30 minutes. To fill the gap, we order an appetizer. Service was "shy". The server approached cautiously always with a big smile. English was good enough but don't expect deep detail replies. Luckily, we are familiar with the food. The restaurant is modest in décor and narrow in shape. A cluster of tables in the back can sit a large group. The Food: Shrimp Pies, $8.99 - 5 Stars This is the only restaurant out of four that offers a shrimp version of the meat pie. Perfectly fried, these were really good! The server said this is his favorite amongst the pies. Lamb Dibi, $21.99 - 4.5 Stars Well-seasoned lamb pieces are well grilled. It comes with a choice of starch; the plantain was great. A surprising delight is the dressing on the onions. Yummy. Grilled Branzino, $25 - 4.5 Stars Not for the faint of heart, this is a whole fish grilled. Honestly, I think the rest of world eats whole fish while US and Canada eat filets only. They made sure to give us the two inches of tail that had broken off. I have to admit I was amused. Perfectly cooked, hubby picked this fish clean. The sweet potato fries are also very good. Jollof Rice with Chicken, $18 - 5 Stars Ever since I learned jollof rice is every family's own recipe from our first W. African restaurant, I have ordered it from all others to try each variant. The Dijah version has a good chewy rice that is superbly well seasoned. The chicken is also very well prepared and flavored. Theirs might be my new favorite. I ordered it to go and sampled a bit at the restaurant. The 5 Stars overall rating is focused on the food. Don't expect fine dining 'ambiance'.

Don't get me wrong, the food tasted amazing, the portion sizes are great, and the price was justified. However, the negatives outweigh the positives for this restaurant. Me and 3 other people came in, and the store was empty. We ordered 3 okra soups, 1 with chicken, 2 with lamb, and 1 jollof rice chicken plate. The first plate took about 40 minutes to come out, which was an egusi soup to which we had not ordered. We still had to wait longer for all of our food to come out. Upon my food arriving, I noticed there was a hair in the Saran Wrap of the fufu, making contact with my food. Because we had already waited so long for our food to come out, I didn't bother to mention it to the worker. Comparing Jollof Hub to Pass D Jollof, this place has better portion sizes and better pricing. It was $26 for okra soup that includes protein and 2 portions of fufu whilst PDJ charges $34 for okra soup, you have to pay extra for protein, and 1 portion of fufu. That said, I don't think I'd come back here due to the food safety issue.
