Katana is one of our favorite higher end sushi spots and always has a great date night vibe. It was super busy for the holiday, but the staff handled it really well and everything came out quickly. We ordered the shishito peppers, calamari, and spicy tuna roll from the HH menu, plus the 12th Man roll and shrimp tempura roll. Definitely recommend coming during happy hour because the prices are great and the portions are still full size. We tried Katana for Valentine's Day and we were so excited to try a new sushi place. We did make a reservation, but it wasn't too busy at 7:00 on a Saturday night. Our server was warm and walked us through the menu, helping us decide on the cracked out bluefin for an appetizer and a variety of rolls. The bluefin was the best part of our meal. Spicy, flavorful, and the wonton chips were a fun addition. The other rolls, however, didn't feel of the highest quality. We were super excited about the crispy firecracker, but the roll lacked salmon and wasn't a bit spicy. Overall, I probably wouldn't return here. The shiso leaf was rotten, they served poke grade tuna and called it sashimi, then the ikira (salmon roe) was so dried and old it was like a gummy. The service was ok, but she got out order wrong and then charged us for the roll we did not order. We know fish, watch out people! read more

Now onto the food we started with Gyoza and Chicken Karaage, which came with spicy mayo...so good! My mom and I both ordered the bento box I got chicken teriyaki, and she had chicken katsu. We took our son out to celebrate his 20th birthday, and Katana Sushi made it a night to remember! We walked in without much of a plan (because that's how birthdays are supposed to go, right?) and somehow scored a reservation within half an hour -- fate was already on our side. The vibe inside is super cute and cozy -- way bigger than it looks from the outside. It's like walking into a hidden treasure chest full of sushi dreams. Our waitress and server were both amazing -- patient, friendly, and ready to answer my million questions about the menu without even flinching. (Seriously, I should've tipped extra just for my menu interrogation.) I went a little wild and ordered takoyaki (because how could I not??), a board special, and tuna sashimi, plus a cocktail to toast the birthday boy. The food? Absolutely fresh, flavorful, and worth every single bite. I was so excited for the takoyaki that I bit into it without thinking... immediate mouth burn. Zero regrets. Totally worth it. I'm now on a mission to convince all my friends that takoyaki is life. Katana is so good! It always holds a special place in my heart as it was the first meal I got to have in the hospital after giving birth (thanks to my sister!). Came here on a Friday evening before going to a graduation. I made a reservation for 6:15pm through Open Table, but arrived about a half hour early. The hostess was super friendly and checked us in, and we were seated right away. Lucky for us, we caught the tail end of Happy Hour. We ordered things from both the HH menu and regular menu. From the HH menu, we ordered yam fries and fried calamari. The yam fries were crispy on the outside and soft inside, with a slightly sweet taste - they were really good! The fried calamari had both rings and tentacles. My wife hates the tentacles, but it all tastes the same to me...so more for me :-). It comes with two different sauces, both of which were really good. I forget what was in them, but I wanna say one was creamy with a wasabi taste (my favorite of the two), and the other was like a sweet/sour taste. I give these a 4/5. I think the oil was a bit too fresh. You know, kinda like how when McDonald's decided to change their oil more often? The fries were still good...but they're not as good as they were in the 80's and 90's. Somehow using the oil for longer periods of time made it taste better. I know...gross :-) From the regular menu, we ordered bulgogi sliders, chicken katsu, and udon with tempura. The bulgogi sliders were delicious! The meat was both sweet and savory, and the added slaw mix gave it a great balance of taste. It also came with some zucchini tempura. Similar to the calamari, the tempura on the zucchini could have either been fried a bit longer, or used older oil. Haha. But I give these sliders a 5/5. The katsu was nice and crispy on the outside, but the meat was a bit tough. I give that a 3/5. The udon didn't seem like anything special, but it was a big bowl. The soup base a miso soup I believe...and that tasted really good IMO. Combining that with some tempura was a good mix. I give that combo a solid 4/5. What really made this a great experience though were the great staff. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. The ambiance was an added bonus. From the outside, you wouldn't think much of this place. In short Everything about this place makes it my favorite sushi joint for 20 miles in any direction. Quality, creativity, drinks, service, and value all make it the new #1 for me, after one visit. Nice mix of new stuff (rolls with amusing names, etc.) and plenty of classic standbys with nice traditional touches. In long Word of mouth has been stellar for this place, and there's been a little turnover on the local sushi scene recently. New spots, old favorites changing in some ways. We've loudly told everyone who'd listen that we were definitely trying Katana soon, and, well, that started like a year ago. Finally made it. There are 3 really cool spots shoulder to shoulder right here on Hewitt. We've heard that Katana gets insanely busy, and we see that they take reservations only for parties of 7 or more. It's holiday shopping season, and the little Google widget that shows how busy a place is at the moment seemed promising. Even at "half as busy as usual," though, we walked in to see just a few bar seats and tables here and there. The hostesses were awesome friendly and helpful--they had to call a party that was a bit late to see if we could take their spots at the bar. No answer. We got sat right away, which on a Saturday night at Katana seems like a lucky break. Service is kinda relaxed. At the bar, the chefs and helpers are super friendly when they're not busy (which is about 5% of the time, maybe), and your server will be by when he's not mixing drinks and helping other tables. Trust me, though, you need time with this menu. It's huge, and you can tell even from brief descriptions that a lot of things are more interesting than they are elsewhere. Drinks We had a cucumber melon smash, which was delicious and refreshing even in winter. Clearly a summer choice for cocktails, but still fantastic in 39F weather. Beautifully balanced. We had 3 sake flights, each $20 or under. The Haiku flight was solid but a bit overly sweet, the Warrior was nice enough, and the Emperor featured 3 of the best sakes I can remember trying. At $20 the Emperor might be my current favorite drinks value anywhere. Scallop Tower I almost wanted to raid the apps page and get full just on those things. We ended up getting just this one. Nice mix of thin cucumber with fresh bay scallop and monkfish liver, along with light seasoning. You can graze 2-3 bites out of this, so it's splittable, but easily delicious enough to have to yourself, too. King Salmon Wrap Not a wrap. It arrives as 4 pieces of sashimi topped with truffle. Absolutely fantastic. This was on the specials board, which is repeated with a printed page in the menu. They "almost always" have the salmon collar special, and frequently have the hamachi collar. I love these people so much. Omakase You can focus on sashimi, nigiri, or both, leaning more toward one or the other. They put together a big paddle for you based on how much you want to spend, starting at $50. Cucumber slices sit next to the sashimi; on its own the sockeye tasted like peach, with cucumber it tasted like watermelon. Why does no one else push the cukes like this? The nigiri were just phenomenal. Beautiful fish, different seasonings on top of each and every one, and just the right hints of vinegar and sweetness in the rice. It actually tastes like sushi rice here! Not clumps of plain calrose. Glen and Yugi were super friendly behind the cases, and they were absolutely on fire making us all kinds of fish. This place was pretty darn good. A bit expensive for sushi around the area but I enjoyed it. The heart attack appetizer, edamame, and tempura platter was a nice start. Followed by some Sake and 7 different rolls and nigiri. Service was great. Our waiter was on it and was consistent with service and checking in on us. Had a great bar considering most sushi spots don't. It was a large place and everything seemed really clean and orderly. I would definitely try this spot again. I started w the Hamachi Jalapeño (thin sliced hamachi and jalapeño w a dash of ponzu sauce, topped with a dash of jalapeño ginger salsa) and a Yuzu-Blood Orange Lemon-drop. Outside of the traditional rolls they have a fabulous selection of house made rolls. I tried the Thai Tiger (in: salmon, jalepeno, lemon, Thai basil. On top: hamachi, ginger miso mayo, eel sauce, green onions, blk sesame seeds). Very vibrant flavors and unlike any roll I've ever had. Ya'll there was like 12 pieces! Delicious! I ended the meal ordering a bowl of Beef Sukiyaki to go (I dipped a bit in the restaurant) and couldn't be happier. I cannot wait to bring the family here so I can order a larger selection to try! We didn't even need the spicy mayo that was forgotten. Not that it mattered bc between them being delivered and being eaten nobody stopped by to check on us. Our server was slammed, so I get it but service was also meh. Not warm or welcoming. All the sushi we had was just meh. Tbh I've had better tasting sushi from Fred's. If you're into a great sushi extravaganza ... do the omakase -- chef lets you request what to exclude (e.g., nothing with cream cheese). I have stopped by here a few times as it is close to Hewitt Reptile where I will house my beardy when on vacation. While it's not close to where I live, I always stop in when I can as I quite enjoy the food and atmosphere. Staff is friendly and the food is great. I live in Seattle where good sushi is easily available, and I will still make the choice to eat here when I can. Talking to friends in the area they say it's the best sushi in the downtown Everett area and I can see why. I have the bento box before which I enjoy but the nigiri is my favorite, fish was fresh and had good sized pieces. Its 4 stars for me as there are places I enjoy a little more due to some unique dishes they offer but they tend to be a bit more expensive, so this is great for the value. The sushi here is decent, but nothing out of this world. The service is somewhat slow, so make sure you get some appetizers/drinks to hold you over. The ambiance is pretty nice. Decent decorations and the tables are spaced out enough where you feel like you have your own space. Also, DONT GET THE SALMON or HAMACHI COLLARS. The taste is average and they're filled with bones.
