In short Small place, hugely ambitious kitchen turning out big flavors in a low-key, welcoming environment. In long Some places get 5 stars because they don't make mistakes and they're better than 80% of the competition in their area. Some places get 5 stars because they do something amazing that totally dazzles you. Rum certainly qualifies on the first point, but it's really getting 5 stars for dazzling us. There has been more and more good Thai all around here for the last 30 years--by now, it's just expected that most people have a favorite Thai spot or love the one that's in their neighborhood. For us, we love so many different Thai dishes that be now, we must have tried at least 20 just in Snohomish County. This is now the clear favorite. This part of downtown Everett is all angle-in parking, and can get busy. We were super lucky to score a spot across the street, given the multiple concerts and summer festivals in town last night. Getting outta the truck, I thought I heard huge boisterous crowds laughing it up in Rum. Turns out we had the place to ourselves! People were having drinks in the pub right next door. Rum doesn't have any kind of bar at all. In this case "Rum" means "delicious," which is a northern-Thai sense of that word. The more universal meaning of the word evidently applies to the traditional Thai dance with all the ornate hand gestures (they have many decorative figures of these dancers in the window, so they embrace both connotations). Service is mild-mannered but warm and friendly. Prices are insanely good--we got out with 2 apps, 2 entrées, and soup for $79. Having no bar does keep your tab down. Fresh rolls All veg, rolled so tightly you could probably pound nails with them. Huge portions--so generous. The peanut sauce is the usual peanut sauce, but augmenting it with the spice caddy here can really light you up. The dried peppers, sambal, and fish oil all really torched my face. Grilled pork Better than grilled pork most places, but a couple bites were a little dry, so this dish comes in 5th place for last night. And I'd still get it again. Sticky sweet dipping sauce, so damn good. Phad thai Chicken. Sticky noodles with lots of bright tamarind flavors clinging to them. Nice big soft fluffy fried egg over the top. Nobody's idea of an adventuous dish; this is like ordering a burger around here, but the textures are flavors here made it interesting. I'm thinking they've put Northern touches on this dish but I don't pretend to be an expert, I just love food. Northern larb Pork. Tons of fresh veg around it. Served hot--this is definitely a Norther style touch, which our waiter was pleased to explain to us. It's also spicy, which he also called out as northern-Thai style. It's fantastic. Bite after bite of plain pork with different condiments kept me going through a couple servings before I started messing with the veg. Tom yum goong I didn't ask if they'll go off-menu above 5 stars of spiciness, but our waiter seemed tickled to serve us our entrées and soup at 5 stars. As usual, soup broth hits you hardest. No sweetness, no funk, no tang, just beautiful creaminess and seasonings, plus heat and nice fresh shellfish. Full-size head-on shrimp! Such a treat. The people are so nice, the prices are like nothing we see around here anymore, and the food is created with such care and love. This is our #1 Thai spot now.

These were just the appetizers one of the many times I've stopped in. The street style foods offered in a traditional manner are flavorful and fresh. The atmosphere is clean and quiet with the owners boys lighting up the energy in the back. It truly feels like a home cooked meal from good people. The cuisine is to die for. Authentic tie - my favorite by far - the curry! But everything we have tried as a family is delicious! I can't get enough of this place. Excellent service, food, many menu options, great detail of product on menu and clean! Highly recommend.

(gotta climb in the Wayback Machine for that gem!) I loved that I saw at least six versions of my childhood dining room table, which felt so nostalgically comfortable that I wanted to crawl under one with my coloring books and my chocolate milk. But I digress -- you're supposed to be reading my review. I decided that I was in the mood for grilled cheese and tomato soup, so that's what I ordered. The tomato soup is really amazing -- so fresh tasting and delicious. But the sandwich was next level nom-ness. I opted to get it on sourdough because it's the best for dunking into the soup. It definitely worked on me - usually specials are relegated to a small corner of the menu, but here they are front and center. I couldn't resist and so I got the Pot Roast Dip. It's a sandwich that has a good amount of pot roast, some bacon jam that's glued together with provolone and Swiss cheese all on a Giuseppe roll (From Macrina Bakery? It's a crust roll). The bacon jam and sandwich dressing makes the sandwich really sweet, but the Angus sauce is very salty, and so when the sandwich is dipped it all balances out interestingly enough. It was good to try, but I think I'll order something else next time. I also got a Mocha latte- very smooth and delicious. I would get this again! Their bathrooms are shared with the rest of the building - the code is at the cashiers. The wifi password is right next to it too. You grab a menu, wait in line to order, and then they bring your food to you. Bus your own table when you're done. Solid spot.

We're both omnivores who eat a fair amount of plant-based fare for health reasons (I have allergies and intolerances, she's heeding doctor's advice). To be clear, this is a cafe, not a full blown restaurant. They serve luncheon fare, but it's a small operation so be either patient to don't bother - especially if there's a line. It's counter ordering with payment expected in advance. The tables closest to the window are a *little* harrowing because of the ADA ramp that leads to the door: the closest chairs can teeter down the ramp if the chairs are pushed back too far. Be careful. There are huge, regular, and small tables available. The biggest table is a little tricky to navigate for folks who want to sit in the booth side, but once seated it's quite lovely. I ordered the Pesto Pasta (involving zoodles: zucchini noodles) and a Sun Juice. My friend ordered the Grilled Cheese and Bisque. Please note: it's worth looking around this place while waiting for your food. You can conceivably get your own water, napkins and cutlery if you walk far enough along the counter towards the back of the restaurant. Back there, you may also notice a single-occupancy restroom and bins for bussing your own dishes. The Sun Juice arrived first, freshly blended, and was delicious. If that's what their juice is like, I look forward to exploring their smoothie offerings. My pasta arrived looking BEAUTIFUL on a bed of spinach, and smelled just as good. It tasted a teensy bit more of salt than I would've liked, but then I speared a sun dried tomato with my next bite and remembered that I'm not a food critic, just a happy customer. Although I'm not generally a fan of zoodles, they seemed to have the art of cooking them down pat: they didn't distract from the pesto at all. The bisque had an artful design of (coconut? cashew?) cream on top. My friend was delighted to note that it was a bit of spice to it: nothing challenging, but just enough for her to find comforting. Given the light and airy look of the inside and the rather rustic / flower-child look of the outside, she was not expecting that surprise. She was so impressed with the grilled cheese sandwich that she offered me a bite: we were both quite impressed with the "cheese" they used, as the item was listed as vegan on the menu. My friend kept whining that she's doomed, as they're close to where she lives *and* they deliver. Oh, yeah - poor her, indeed. Alas, alack, and so on.

Don't overlook the zucchini- it cooks into the dish so well. I usually get it in the hot stone dish because I like how it crisps up the rice, but then I have to take it to go because it's a HUGE serving. That amount of protein and veggies for $15 is so iconic.
