If I had known about this place earlier, I might have held my Chinese wedding banquet here instead. Though, location-wise, this place, literally called "New World Banquet Restaurant" in Chinese, is seemingly located in the middle of nowhere on 65th street between 9th Avenue and Fort Hamilton Pkwy. The only highway nearby would be the BQE-278 three blocks away. Parking is definitely easy to get at night without even needing to park at the metered spots in front of the restaurant, unless it's after hours. The outside of this restaurant is unique in that the entire restaurant name is a neon, blinking sign, something I don't see at most restaurants. It could be a cheesy tactic, but it works really well here where in the middle of nowhere, the restaurant stands out. Inside, amazingly, the place is very beautiful with golden tablecloths, flat screen TVs on the sides that broadcast a Chinese cable channel, and a brightly lit room. As my Aunt reserved two large tables for 7:30pm, we were given the two "head" tables on the 1/2 step platform near the dragon/phoenix/double happiness decorations. Unfortunately, for such a beautiful place, the restaurant was mostly devoid of customers. If there were one or two customers, I wouldn't have noticed at all. They also have a private room on the side, but nobody was using it and the lights were turned off to save electricity. I did notice staff gather around to eat their group meal. It's a mystery why this restaurant isn't booming with business. The restaurant also has a take-out menu too. I don't know about pricing, but I'm thinking it's not bad (will check out the take-out menu later.)
My Aunt ordered a ten-course meal and with 11 and 12 people at each table, it was hard for servers to serve the dishes without someone having to either get up or give leeway. That can't be helped at most Chinese restaurants. The food was so delicious to me especially the fried crunchy lobster meat. I'm not good with Chinese menus, but that was delicious. We ordered a spinach dish, which I devoured.
When the birthday cake came, staff cued the music without warning and everybody sang happy birthday two times before the recording was done. I was disappointed they didn't play the Chinese version of Happy Birthday or even the congratulations song. Also, they could have waited until, the star of the show, my grandma, was off the phone before starting the music.
We did have longevity peach buns, which are smaller sized in my opinion, but they look pretty.
We didn't leave the restaurant until about 11pm. Overall, it was a nice experience and I would come here again.
PROS: delicious food, available street parking at night, brightly lit and regal atmosphere with TV
