Dave's Auto repair is indeed conveniently located and the staff is friendly. The price I paid for a minor repair was also not terrible and that's why they get 2 stars. The reason they don't get the other 3 stars is that Dave pressured me to do a major repair for over $1000, a job that the dealership ended up doing for $600. To be fair, he was planning on replacing more parts, but if the car manufacturer specifies that these parts need not be replaced I don't see why a mechanic should pressure me to replace them. You should definitely get a second opinion on the price of any major repair. read more

I read a lot of good reviews from this shop and decided to give them a try. Having them located right down the street with in walking distance to my work was helpful too. I took my truck in for a brake inspection and for a quote for any repairs needed. I knew my rear drum brakes were pretty bad so those were the specific reason I took it in. After their "Courtesy Inspection" they notified me that my front disc brakes were good but that my rear drum brakes were gone. So bad that they couldn't even get the drums off without braking or cutting them off. They said they spent a lot of time just trying to get them off. All in all the estimate to Remove the old drums, replace with new ones, new shoes, new cylinders and hardware kit w/ installation would be $975.17. Remember, this is only for the rear. $502.91 in parts and $472.26 in labor. OUCH! So, I took their itemized estimate and ordered the exact same parts (Centric Parts) from www.partsgeek.com for $188.15 (includes shipping) for a parts savings of $314.76. They have some mark up. And they won't install owner supplied parts because they say they can't warranty the parts. The manufacturer warranties the parts not the shop. I just wanted them to warranty their work. They wouldn't do it. So, I just took my truck to Midas on White Oaks Rd. in Campbell, CA and they removed the drums, shoes, hardware and cylinders and installed all my owner supplied parts with out any problems. They did great work. Oh, and it only took them about 15 minutes total to remove both rear drums without breaking or cutting anything. I know, cause I was there when they did the work. Makes me wonder just how honest Dave's Shop is. All in all with a brake fluid flush and new fluid and install, it came to $322.00. For a install labor savings of $150.26. Over all I saved $465.42. I can't believe the mark up that shops charge on parts. I know they need to make their money, but geeez. All in all, not sure I totally trust the shop and I don't really care for the owner. Kinda rude and not very friendly. read more

I just come from there. I have a problem with my lights and he guess it could be the dimmer switch. As he come back to check how to get one he told me a new one would cost 340$. I just lough because I cant afford such a amount at this moment, and I expected something about 100$ for this problem (I am from germany). So I said it to him that I cant even afford to buy this thing and bye bye. Now 10 min later I check the internet for this particularly device and I found it directly on http://autozune.com for 150$: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsShelf.jsp?displayName=Dimmer+Switch&currentPage=1&categoryDisplayName=Electrical+%26+Lighting&navValue=15700133&itemId=133-0&parentId=57-0 so, whatever... additional to his comment: the prize was for the device only! so he is also lying now. Dont be afraid and ask me to change my review. If the next will be better, without complains you dont lose, you will get better. thats it. read more

We took our SUV here for several repairs in 2011 and early 2012, and were pleased with their ability to handle our repairs such as a replacing window motor, seat belt replacement, power steering system replacement. Great service and work. Then things got strange. We brought our car in for the heater not working. The shop said we had low coolant and then they diagnosed a cracked head and/or blown head gasket based on compression tests. Then they also said our drive shaft is ready to fail. At this point we asked about the costs to repair and it seemed more than the book value on the car. It was several thousand $4000+ We decided not to have these repairs done. Then the shop asked us a few times if we wanted to sell the car to them. It was awkward and felt uncomfortable. We took car to get a 2nd opinion at another Shop and they only found a lose radiator hose. They compression checked and found no problems. They also checked the drive shaft and found no problems. Cost to repair about $50. ( this other shop is great, DJ Performance in San Jose) The car is running fine nearly 2 years later after Dave's shop said the car had all theses false expensive repairs. Add this to the scam of the false expensive repairs and the multiple requests to buy the SUV illustrate Dave's Auto Repair is not honest, period. Be careful if you come here. read more

Dave continues the tradition of Ole's Car Shop, which is to say, exceptional and honest service. Like Ole, Dave will tell you what your best options are without trying to sell you on one option or another, and actively works to help you save money. I stopped shopping around after finding Ole's and I feel no need to shop around now. read more

Dave's auto repair is the best shop I've been to in the Bay Area if not ever. That's saying a lot given the shop I used to go to before moving to California was a family friend. They are extremely open and honest about what needs to be done and what doesn't. I got an inspection at a different shop and was told I needed a bunch of work done. The first time I went to Dave's they told me a few things needed to be done while the rest either didn't need to be done at all or could wait as it wasn't critical. Another time I went to Dave's I had a similar experience where a tire shop told me I need a bunch of work done while changing my tires. Dave's told me that I didn't need any of that work done. I would recommend Dave's to any and everyone! They've made a committed repeat customer out of me. read more

My car (Audi 2013) started shaking whenever I would stop at a red light or press on the brakes. I took my car to 9 minute oil the day of when my car was shaking and they said everything was fine ... they're lazy. I so happened to find DAVES auto repair and it only took a few minutes to see what was wrong and got it fixed the same day! I was most satisfied with how detail oriented they were with the problem of the car so that I am well aware of the issue. KT helped me, he's a great guy and very friendly! Gave my phone number to them so that they have it in their records and later they went out of their way and texted me to make sure the car is in good condition! I'd recommend coming here! I appreciate their integrity very much! (: read more

I've been coming here for years and this is a fantastic place to get your car fixed. After Dave figured out that I needed new tires on my car, he called into Costco to make sure they had the tires I needed. When we found out that Costco wouldn't take my out-of-state parents' membership over the phone, Dave actually came with me to Costco so I could use his membership. On top of all that, I wasn't charged for anything (including the test drive he took with my car to figure out I needed new tires)! read more

This business is totally trustworthy, honest and reasonable. I heard a grinding noise coming from my brakes and thought I needed new brakes. My family just moved here from SF and I am figuring out silicon valley life. Car troubles are stressful enough but adding to it is being carless in SV is not an option. I put out a estimate request on yelp and was contacted by this business. I brought my car in and they couldn't get to it for an hour or two. They offered a loaner to me so I could not have my day crippled by waiting or getting an Uber, etc. A couple of hours later, I got a call from the gentleman that runs the place telling me that they had inspected the car and there was NOTHING wrong with my brakes! They are just a little squeaking because my back rotors were a little rusty (our home in SF was near the Ocean) and that they were practically brand new. I have been so busy with our move, two kids (4&5), new school, new house, etc I couldn't remember the last time I got them done. I came back and gave them their loaner car and they gave me the report from the FREE inspection and I was out of there! I will not take my car anywhere else now that I know that these guys are as HONEST as this! Highly recommended!! read more

KT and the guys here are honest and straightforward. My truck was diagnosed accurately and efficiently and was priced fairly and completed with quality parts. Really can't say how much I appreciate an honest mechanic that is really looking out for your best interest. It was diagnosed at another shop and I was being told my engine was blown the valves were destroyed etc etc....long story short I brought my car here and after a proper check....I was told it was ok and the next afternoon it was ready. Great service, great people. read more

Dave's is probably the best mechanic I've been to. They diagnosed problems that other mechanics have missed. Down to the finest detail. The visit wasn't cheap, but now I have confidence that anything that could be wrong with my car has been addressed. read more

We've been coming to Dave's Auto for 14 years, and always had a great experience with major and minor repairs. Recently, a piece of body trim on my new-ish car came off. I went to an auto body shop to get a quote, and they wanted to charge $375, which seemed exorbitant considering we still had the trim piece and there was nothing wrong with it, it just needed to be clipped back on to the car. I asked the folks at Dave's Auto if they had a body shop the recommended, and they said they could actually put it back on for me. They didn't even charge me anything. Really fantastic shop. read more

Took my car in to diagnose a starting problem, turned out to be a bad starter. KT and his team took care of it quickly within a day at a very fair price, the car was ready to go when promised, they provided great guidance on maintenance tasks to look out for going forward, and they followed up afterwards to make sure there weren't any other issues. Honest and reliable work, thanks KT and team for the great service! read more

Super friendly, professional, AFFORDABLE, honest. I love them! They DO NOT make you pay for anything your car does not actually need. I love Chuck and assistant too :) read more

Dave is very thorough and has been always honest with our car repairs. When he says the car is going to be done, it's done. He makes necessary recommendations, and gives us also the optional recommendations. We brought one of our older cars into Dave because it was making an odd knocking noise. Of course, like going to a doctor's office, when we got there, our car wasn't making the noise. Dave took it for a diagnostic that afternoon and the sound couldn't be reproduced. Dave did not charge us for his time. --THAT IS HONEST. We have since brought the car back for a minor repair, and it being symptomatic of the knocking noise, Dave was able to fix it! UNLIKE OUR HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT MENLO MAZDA where we spent 45 minutes waiting with 5 guys staring at a part and charged us $75 for not doing a thing. THIS IS NOT DAVE'S STYLE. If he finds the problem, he'll make recommendations to fix it and it's up to you whether you can afford to do it, or to wait later. LOW PRESSURE. That's why my husband and I go to Dave. He only wants the life of our cars to last! --one of our cars is running on 24+ years! read more

As I recently switched my job from downtown SJ to Palo Alto and needed to get my trusted 2007 Lexus with 250K miles serviced during the day when I am at work, I found Dave's on Yelp close to my new workplace. My experience with KT made me wish I had found Dave's sooner. I dropped my car off at 9 and before noon I got a call from KT regarding what needs to be done for my car. After a quick call, KT also sent me a detailed quote via emails with photos and videos of the oil leak on the engine. KT was super transparent with the condition of the car and what needs to be done to keep her going for years to come. The photos and videos provided made it clear that KT's recommendations were spot on with a fair price. Even better, I was able to pick up the car by the end of day to get me back to south SJ. All in all, I had a great experience here and KT just got a new loyal customer for many years to come. I can't recommend KT enough as it is very hard to find a good trusted mechanic. read more

The cost was fair and reasonable after getting estimates from other shops. I am done shopping for Auto Mechanics. Thank heavens for Daves ,Chuck , and staff!!!! read more

KT and the crew at Dave's are super helpful and professional. I've been going here for 7-8 years now and I have 3 vehicles of varying ages from brand new to a '72. They are capable of doing all sorts of repairs from simple to custom. I never feel like I get taken advantage of on price and their work never fails. I was tired of searching for a shop that does shabby work that requires me to go back over and over. Dave's does the job right the FIRST time and they don't overcharge you at all. My girlfriend had previously had work done at Dave's and we were both really happy with the work, so when my transmission stopped working on my way to the airport, I had my car towed to Dave's. I expected that the transmission was shot but thought i would get Dave to check it out. The next morning they worked on my car and told me it was just the transmission fluid filter and would be relatively inexpensive. They did the repairs and I had my car that evening. They did a great job and I will recommend them to anyone who asks. When interacting with Dave and his staff I do not feel like I am getting conned or fleeced. My family and I were drive to Napa to visit family when I noticed smoke coming from under my truck. We pulled off the freeway, and parked. Fortunately the first auto shop review we came along was Dave's Auto. It was 3:30 on a Friday afternoon, so needless to say we were in bad shape! When we got to Dave's, KT immediately look at my truck and diagnosed the problem. He gave me a quote that would have been fare under any circumstance, but considering our predicament, was quite welcome. He was nice enough to begin work right away on the truck, and saved us from renting a car, so within an hour, we were on our way!! I only wish I could call Dave's Auto my local mechanic!! read more

I love Dave's Auto Repair! When my aging Corolla was towed here a few years ago, Dave gave me the sobering honest assessment that my car was suffering from "catastrophic engine failure" and that purchasing a new engine for my poor old car was not worthwhile. That decision undoubtedly saved me many dollars on unnecessary repairs and I really appreciated it. Fast forward to now...everytime my current car is in need of repairs or check-ups, I am sure to take it to Dave's Auto Repair for its needs because I can always be sure of the fair, reliable, quality, and affordable customer care. read more

These guys are incredible. I went to them 2-3 times back when I lived in Silicon Valley (working down the street in Los Altos), and once he checked an indicator light/fixed something for me for free (who does that anymore?), and other times they gave me quality advice on tires and other issues I was having. Prices are fair too, and they're pretty prompt. read more

Great experience. Honest service. Chuck was there to help me for my scheduled appointment. And juggled lots more clients while getting me set up for the first time. We started on time and I was able to walk around to pretty much anything I needed (Starbucks, Chipotle, Petsmart, OSH, etc.) while waiting. I returned a little early, and they were finishing up. He even let me know my tire had a nail in it, which I was hoping was that and not a faulty valve. Although they don't do tires, he helped me confirm I'm in need of a replacement on all tires (and front wipers). An oil change is all I needed (and paid for), but they go above and beyond. Honest, thorough and efficient service is priceless. A well deserved 5 star!!! read more

Fantastic, quick service. Dave's blends old-fashioned in-person customer service with technology that's user-friendly and efficient (online appointments, emailed/texted inspection results, etc.). There's a lot wrong with my 14-year-old Honda Accord, but I just need it to last a few more months. I shared this with the guys at Dave's and they were super helpful in getting me the service I needed to make my car safe to drive without making unnecessary repairs. They did a full inspection of my car, called me to talk about the results, then replaced my brake pads and rotors, all in the same morning. I was very pleased with Dave's quick, professional, and high-quality service, and highly recommend them. read more

Dave is going out of his to help me save money. And I trust the guy! Who can say that about their mechanic!? After a couple not so great interactions at the dealership, I am so glad I made the switch over to Dave. HIGHLY recommended. SO much so that I kind of want to hug the guy. read more

When it comes to my Inifinti G35 coupe, I am willing to spend money as I don't want to have any accidents or broken car in the middle of a freeway. I had been religiously going to my car dealership at Cupertino and the interaction with them is not so great as the people there are cold and unfriendly. After spending $3000+ for the past 3 year on regular maintainence (btw, my car only have total of 42000 miles on it), I decide to take a leap of faith to try out other mechanics when I have a hard time to start my car in the morning and need to jump my car with the cables. I can't believe I didn't seek out Dave's Auto Repair earlier!!! Here's my story: When I called 8:00am Friday to make a same day appointment, Patrick helped squeeze me into their fully booked schedule. I dropped off my car there at 9:00am explaining I have difficulty starting my car and also need my 3000 mile regular maintenence. I asked if my car need synthetic oil and Dave honestly explained that my car wouldn't need it as it doesn't have a big tank to hold it; it would be a waste of money. At noon, they told me my battery is the reason; in addition, they told me my airfilter is super dirty and my windshield wipers are on its last legs. At 5:00pm, they finished everything!!! Super fast! Now I'm happily starting my car in the morning easy and my windshield wipers stopped making squeaking noise. I wished I have found them earlier to have such superb honest service and save so much money! read more
