This business is totally trustworthy, honest and reasonable. I heard a grinding noise coming from my brakes and thought I needed new brakes. My family just moved here from SF and I am figuring out silicon valley life. Car troubles are stressful enough but adding to it is being carless in SV is not an option. I put out a estimate request on yelp and was contacted by this business. I brought my car in and they couldn't get to it for an hour or two. They offered a loaner to me so I could not have my day crippled by waiting or getting an Uber,etc. A couple of hours later, I got a call from the gentleman that runs the place telling me that they had inspected the car and there was NOTHING wrong with my brakes! They are just a little squeaking because my back rotors were a little rusty (our home in SF was near the Ocean) and that they were practically brand new. I have been so busy with our move, two kids (4&5), new school, new house, etc I couldn't remember the last time I got them done. I came back and gave them their loaner car and they gave me the report from the FREE inspection and I was out of there! We've been coming to Dave's Auto for 14 years, and always had a great experience with major and minor repairs. Recently, a piece of body trim on my new-ish car came off. I went to an auto body shop to get a quote, and they wanted to charge $375, which seemed exorbitant considering we still had the trim piece and there was nothing wrong with it, it just needed to be clipped back on to the car. I asked the folks at Dave's Auto if they had a body shop the recommended, and they said they could actually put it back on for me. They didn't even charge me anything. As I recently switched my job from downtown SJ to Palo Alto and needed to get my trusted 2007 Lexus with 250K miles serviced during the day when I am at work, I found Dave's on Yelp close to my new workplace. My experience with KT made me wish I had found Dave's sooner. I dropped my car off at 9 and before noon I got a call from KT regarding what needs to be done for my car. After a quick call, KT also sent me a detailed quote via emails with photos and videos of the oil leak on the engine. KT was super transparent with the condition of the car and what needs to be done to keep her going for years to come. This is a follow-up review from my previous bad bad experience. I would have never come back to here to give a review again if I wasn't sent an email from this place reminding me about a "150,000" miles services needed for my sold car. It is certainly not surprising to see Taylor's recent one star review and others who gives this place a one star review. Well, just to update, at that time he suggested a $800-$900 timing belt replacement while doing mechanical check. Guess what? When I sold the car I just found on the service record from my previous owner that the car already had a timing-belt replacement just right before I became the owner. Just to give people a better idea, my car was a 99 Volvo. I purchased the vehicle when it had around 100,000 miles on it. Do some research and find how long a new timing belt lasts for this type of vehicle: 105,000 miles. That means I had only used less than 30,000 miles for that time belt from the time I bought and till the time I sold the car. Replacement definitely NOT! Anyway, I use "YELP" a lot to look up good places to dine, to have good mechanics, etc. It really upsets me when the reviews I read is opposite of the truth in reality. To keep "YELP" a better place, I am obliged to give this review. Also, I highly suggest people to not look at the overall review. But to look on the buttom left side and click on the "filtered" reviews. It definitely gives you a better idea! read more

Dave's Auto repair is indeed conveniently located and the staff is friendly. The price I paid for a minor repair was also not terrible and that's why they get 2 stars. The reason they don't get the other 3 stars is that Dave pressured me to do a major repair for over $1000, a job that the dealership ended up doing for $600. To be fair, he was planning on replacing more parts, but if the car manufacturer specifies that these parts need not be replaced I don't see why a mechanic should pressure me to replace them. You should definitely get a second opinion on the price of any major repair. read more

I read a lot of good reviews from this shop and decided to give them a try. Having them located right down the street with in walking distance to my work was helpful too. I took my truck in for a brake inspection and for a quote for any repairs needed. I knew my rear drum brakes were pretty bad so those were the specific reason I took it in. After their "Courtesy Inspection" they notified me that my front disc brakes were good but that my rear drum brakes were gone. So bad that they couldn't even get the drums off without braking or cutting them off. They said they spent a lot of time just trying to get them off. All in all the estimate to Remove the old drums, replace with new ones, new shoes, new cylinders and hardware kit w/ installation would be $975.17. Remember, this is only for the rear. $502.91 in parts and $472.26 in labor. OUCH! So, I took their itemized estimate and ordered the exact same parts (Centric Parts) from www.partsgeek.com for $188.15 (includes shipping) for a parts savings of $314.76. They have some mark up. And they won't install owner supplied parts because they say they can't warranty the parts. The manufacturer warranties the parts not the shop. I just wanted them to warranty their work. They wouldn't do it. So, I just took my truck to Midas on White Oaks Rd. in Campbell, CA and they removed the drums, shoes, hardware and cylinders and installed all my owner supplied parts with out any problems. They did great work. Oh, and it only took them about 15 minutes total to remove both rear drums without breaking or cutting anything. I know, cause I was there when they did the work. Makes me wonder just how honest Dave's Shop is. All in all with a brake fluid flush and new fluid and install, it came to $322.00. For a install labor savings of $150.26. Over all I saved $465.42. I can't believe the mark up that shops charge on parts. I know they need to make their money, but geeez. All in all, not sure I totally trust the shop and I don't really care for the owner. I just come from there. I have a problem with my lights and he guess it could be the dimmer switch. As he come back to check how to get one he told me a new one would cost 340$. I just lough because I cant afford such a amount at this moment, and I expected something about 100$ for this problem (I am from germany). We took our SUV here for several repairs in 2011 and early 2012, and were pleased with their ability to handle our repairs such as a replacing window motor, seat belt replacement, power steering system replacement. Great service and work. Then things got strange. We brought our car in for the heater not working. The shop said we had low coolant and then they diagnosed a cracked head and/or blown head gasket based on compression tests. Then they also said our drive shaft is ready to fail. At this point we asked about the costs to repair and it seemed more than the book value on the car. It was several thousand $4000+ We decided not to have these repairs done. Then the shop asked us a few times if we wanted to sell the car to them. It was awkward and felt uncomfortable. We took car to get a 2nd opinion at another Shop and they only found a lose radiator hose. They compression checked and found no problems. They also checked the drive shaft and found no problems. Cost to repair about $50. ( this other shop is great, DJ Performance in San Jose) The car is running fine nearly 2 years later after Dave's shop said the car had all theses false expensive repairs. Add this to the scam of the false expensive repairs and the multiple requests to buy the SUV illustrate Dave's Auto Repair is not honest, period. Be careful if you come here. read more

Dave is very thorough and has been always honest with our car repairs. When he says the car is going to be done, it's done. He makes necessary recommendations, and gives us also the optional recommendations. We brought one of our older cars into Dave because it was making an odd knocking noise. Of course, like going to a doctor's office, when we got there, our car wasn't making the noise. Dave took it for a diagnostic that afternoon and the sound couldn't be reproduced. Dave did not charge us for his time. --THAT IS HONEST. We have since brought the car back for a minor repair, and it being symptomatic of the knocking noise, Dave was able to fix it! UNLIKE OUR HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT MENLO MAZDA where we spent 45 minutes waiting with 5 guys staring at a part and charged us $75 for not doing a thing. THIS IS NOT DAVE'S STYLE. Fantastic, quick service. Dave's blends old-fashioned in-person customer service with technology that's user-friendly and efficient (online appointments, emailed/texted inspection results, etc.). There's a lot wrong with my 14-year-old Honda Accord, but I just need it to last a few more months. I shared this with the guys at Dave's and they were super helpful in getting me the service I needed to make my car safe to drive without making unnecessary repairs. My girlfriend had previously had work done at Dave's and we were both really happy with the work, so when my transmission stopped working on my way to the airport, I had my car towed to Dave's. I expected that the transmission was shot but thought i would get Dave to check it out. The next morning they worked on my car and told me it was just the transmission fluid filter and would be relatively inexpensive. They did the repairs and I had my car that evening. They did a great job and I will recommend them to anyone who asks. When interacting with Dave and his staff I do not feel like I am getting conned or fleeced. We started on time and I was able to walk around to pretty much anything I needed (Starbucks, Chipotle, Petsmart, OSH, etc.) while waiting. I returned a little early, and they were finishing up. He even let me know my tire had a nail in it, which I was hoping was that and not a faulty valve.
