This is the best Mexican food that I've had so far in Dublin. It's a surprisingly big, colorful space with hand-painted decorations. It was a busy night and we didn't make a reservation, but the team quickly found room for the two of us at a clean table. I ordered the beef nachos and my partner had the chicken chimichanga. Both were winning dishes-- filling and exactly what we were craving. The avocado crema is a €2 extra charge but it's so worth it. I'll definitely be back! read more

It's difficult to find much authentic Mexican or Tex-Mex in Dublin. There are several good burrito places, but most of the spots in City Centre that claim to be Mexican really offer some variation on street taco fusion cuisine. So, we were excited to find a restaurant like Acapulco that feels more like the traditional Mexican/Tex-Mex places we've enjoyed in the US. The places looks great, with a nice Mexican vibe. And the food is good, but I can't say it's great. My wife enjoyed her enchilada plate. I was less enthusiastic about my burrito. That may be my fault--I ordered the chili beef burrito, and it really tasted like chili dumped into a tortilla. It was pretty greasy and didn't really agree with me, and I wished I'd gone with the chicken or pulled pork. (In Ireland, which is rich with excellent Irish beef, I don't know why a Mexican restaurant would opt for a beef chili over a pulled or cubed steak.) The tortilla chips that came with the plate were a bit stale. The other thing we found odd is that we felt a bit rushed, even though the place was less than one-third full. Upon entering shortly after opening in the mid-afternoon, we were told we could only have the table for one hour and fifteen minutes. That isn't really a problem, but it's not a very welcoming way to get started and also differed from the info we received when we made the reservations, which was that we had an hour and forty-five minutes. Then, the food arrived around eight minutes after we ordered. And the end, a server stopped by to take our payment after we'd already paid. It felt like we were being hurried out even though the restaurant was still mostly empty. It's not a bad place for some Mexican or Tex-Mex comfort food, but it's a long way from the best of this kind of food that I've had. read more

Really enjoyed their food!! Staff was very accommodating and attentive (brought out several different hot sauces for us to try). The space was tight for Sat night but nonetheless we had a nice meal here. I had the veggie chili burrito which was quite large! The veggie enchilada was yummy as well. For apps we had the jalapeno poppers and nachos -- both pretty good. I would certainly recommend this spot to anyone visiting Dublin read more

I dont know why Acapulco gets flak. It was GOOD. I guess that goes to show Dubliners really might not know their Mexican! So the rice tastes like Zataran's Spanish Rice from a box and the corn salad was a little uninspired (I suggest dressing of some sort--at the very least a squeeze of lime juice) but we are talking about mediocre sides here. The mains were delish! Hubs & I shared the nachos which had incredible chips, good salsa and real cheese on top as well as guacamole. We also shared a chimichanga filled with vegetarian chilli. The filling was far from authentic but frankly it was very good; mostly beans, courgettes, corn, and tomatoes. I'd also like to say they had KILLER GUACAMOLE on top of everything so kudos for playing up your absolutely best food item. Guacamole is often done very wrong so Acapulco scored points there. I also asked for extra hot sauce and they furnished me a bottle of hot red sauce made from scotch bonnets (very hot peppers) that was perfect in its hot hot goodness. I had a great night here recently. We were a group of six so we prebooked a table, just in case and indeed the queue was already out the door when we arrived. We got seated about 15mins after the reserved time but got menues straight away. I found the menues simple and uncluttered with options for gluten free demands (corn tortillas). We ordered margaritas by the glass (not pitcher) as this actually works out a bit cheaper. The place was absolutely packed but the service was quick. We got a several fajita dishes, a burrito and a goats cheese tostada. Everything was delicious, especially the guacamole which was served with the fajitas. And there was plenty of it. We struggled a bit towards the end to get the bill and the water bottle was never refilled even though we asked for it (quite bad when you consider there's 6 girls drinking lots of margaritas). Sigh! I like Mexican food and had really high hopes for Acapulco and I left pretty disappointed. The lunch menu didn't offer too much choice and the Chicken quesadilla I eventually ordered was bland and tasteless so I ended up eating most of my friends potato- or spud- skins, which were a bit better. He'd also ordered the wings and seemed pretty happy with those. The service was ok, the waitress wasn't too friendly but we got our food pretty quickly. With all of our dishes being around 6 Euro each, lunch was pretty cheap but not particularly cheerful. read more

Fun, bright and spicy - and that's just the chairs in Acapulco Restaurant! As for the food, it's colourful, tasty and plentiful. Yes, the spiciness has been toned down and some of the 'bite' that you get with authentic Mexican is missing, but the meals are far from bland. The classic enchiladas are a winner and like all good burritos, Acapulco's are packed to capacity. There is a veggie option for almost every dish which is refreshing (I never thought of Mexico as a country of vegetarians!) Tempting as it is, take Laura's advise and refrain from ordering a Margarita. They are very expensive at €8.50 and alas they don't stretch all that far. The house red wasn't great either (and believe me I'm no connoisseur) so best stick with beer or tequila. Oh, what a trial! read more

'Probably the best Mexican I've ever tasted' - that was my friend's opinion of the Acapulco burrito. However, having sampled the real deal, I'm afraid I couldn't say the same. Acapulco is great fun. It's not great Mexican food, but if you're up for a good night out with friends and a couple of bevvies (yes take everyone's advice and stick with coronas!) this is a grand old place to start your evening. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, and there are some cute little booths at the back, if you're lucky enough. I always wanted to sit upstairs though... This is a really fun 'mexican' restaurant. It's quite kitsch and some people might think a little naff, with its brightly coloured walls etc, but I think it's a bit of good fun. I would call myself a bit of a Mexican food connoisseur, but to be honest, I'm not that picky. If there's some kind of pepper and a bitta salsa on it, I'm happy. I don't care if I'm eating elastic bands if there's a bit of spice on them. So bear that in mind as I write that Acapulco is only an okay Mexican restaurant. The carnitas are decent, as are the tacos, but nothing blew me away. The decor in the place is probably the best thing Acapulco has going for it. It looks very cool, and has a great upper level/balcony thing that kind of reminds me of an old western saloon bar. The first time I was there I ordered a coke after a few too many jalapenos, only to be served a warm flat glass of black which definitely came from a bottle. Please bear in mind that I am fully aware that the moniker 'Mexican' is pushing the boat out on this one, but it's the closest to Mexican food that we get here in Dublin, and it's damn good! The place itself is cool...funky light fitting, chairs that genuinely make you consider theft, and to top it all off...a winding staircase (just watch how many coronas you chug before venturing down; jungle gyms were fun when you were a carefree child, not so much for a tipsy...bigger child) The food is also pretty fab, less spicy than more authentic Mexican, but that's thanks mainly to the Irish palate not being able to handle proper spices. Try the nachos with beef for sure...delicious! The prices are right, and pop along for lunch when they have decent deals on. Only one minor criticism...don't get the pitcher of margarita: it's a bit small and not as much fun as straight tequila. read more

There's something a bit depressing about a restaurant with so many empty seats and too many staff, yet no one actually able to serve the table properly. And then there's the food. It's odd to me how Mexican food can be pricey, like here. So that in itself messes with my senses. I used to work in a Mexican restaurant and the I was the only English speaking person, I saw how they made the food, staff also ate traditional food before we opened everyday... The food is inexpensive to make. I got the vegetarian chili, it was laden with spices that I could not taste whatever the heck I was supposed to taste. it was completely over bearing taste wise, I couldn't finish it. The service was great but the tables are too close together, when there were lulls in our conversation I got to hear the intimate bedroom details of the couple to my left and all about the man's hernia to my right. I should preface this by saying that I am American, and seeing as that my country is pressed right up next to Mexico, land of deliciousness, I know my way around a Mexican menu. I have a relationship with Mexican food that goes beyond what I can really express with words. It's a big part of my life. I need it. I even worked in a Mexican restaurant to get closer to the stuff. Needless to say, moving to Dublin was essentially putting myself through Mexican food-detox. I was at my breaking point when we rolled up to Acapulco and despite being pricey, we decided to give it a go so that I wouldn't start convulsing and clawing at my skin and whimpering senselessly for mas guacamole, por favor. We decided to share a plate of beef fajitas, because usually this dish entails plentiful mounds of meat and goodies to satisfy more than one. The food came out in a flash, which I appreciated, but the pluses stop there. It was downright teeny. There were 7 small pieces of steak (we had to count, we were so incredulous), which obviously was not a prime cut. The meat was cooked with onions and peppers in a spicy sauce, which was tasty but inauthentic. We ordered fajitas, not veggie and beef stir-fry. Accompaniments included some seriously uninspired homemade salsa (If this is true, fire the chef), guacamole that was, as far as I could tell, just pureed avocado, and sour cream. We got 4 tortillas, which was absolutely sufficient for the measly meal. We ate it all in a matter of minutes. Like I said, it tasted ok, but it was still a poor comparison to the real thing and at 16.95, a huge rip off. Terribly disappointing! This place does get points for atmosphere, which is also fake-Mexican but kinda fun. I can stand inauthenticity when it comes to decor, I guess. The staff is lovely, and they bring you glasses of water when you sit down. This saved us from awkwardly asking for tap water to avoid paying 5 bones for a Corona (highway robbery!!!). read more

Cute restaurant/decor. The staff were really nice and attentive. However the Mexican food was very lackluster. Granted, I am from California so I'm accustomed to nothing but the best, therefore I usually set my expectations low. And this restaurant did not meet them. We started off with chips, salsa, and guacamole (which were rather pricey). The chips were awful - no where near true Mexican chips- and the guacamole looked like gunk squeezed out of a tube. It didn't taste awful, but it wasn't good guacamole. Meals were fine. Not good, not bad. I myself got the chicken fajitas, which didn't taste like any fajita I had ever had before. They were ok, but the plate was definitely mostly veggies and a little bit of chicken. We didn't order any margaritas, mojitos, etc. since they were kind of pricey, but it would definitely be a cute/fun place to go for drinks. All in all, not awful, but not good. I used to eat here quite regularly and while it wasn't exactly perfect, authentic Mexican food it was pretty tasty and one of a very small handful of Mexican eateries in Dublin. I went yesterday for the first time in a couple of years and was left rather disappointed. The chicken wings no longer have a lovely sticky BBQ sauce coating but are dry and come with some sort of aioli that mostly tasted of salt. My chimichanga was ok but not as good as I remembered. My dinner companion had pork enchiladas which had a very odd and rather unpleasant taste. They were accompanied by plain white rice and a small side salad. We ate from the early bird menu which did seem good value at €16 for two courses. Although this is perhaps why the quality suffered. Either way, I won't return to find out unfortunately. read more

This restaurant is a colourful addition to the selection of eateries of Dublin city centre :) I have eaten there at least 5 times and I return for the same dish each time :)...their food is good enough for me to return. I am giving them 3 stars because I found the last two times I went the quality of their chicken had altered, and not for the good! Food here is nice and simple, feels quite home-made instead of super elaborate. I suppose that's why this place is popular. I had the chicken quesadilla with avocado as a main, it was v nice and good portion for a main... They were washed down with Margaritas which were pretty good (love Margaritas), a bit too strong when you start but as the crushed ice melts they get nicer; for dessert we had another pitcher of Margaritas... oops! Tip: The pitchers are quite good value for 4 ppl so go get them! Food: I like the food here, simple yet tasty and some of my friends are fans already. Really takes you away - love the colors of Mexico from the lighting to the serving plates and margarita glasses! * Margaritas: Not too bad at 8.50. But, a wee bit too much ice watered down my margie and I'd prefer rocky salt on the rim of the glass as opposed to table salt (?) * Combo Platter: Nice attempt with the delicious quesadillas! However, the chips were slightly stale / bland and the remaining items were simply mediocre bar food. * Chipotle Enchiladas: Very tasty. But slightly dry. Sides of rice and corn salad were a nice touch. * Salsa & Guacamole: Mixed. Salsa made the bland chips much more palatable. The Guacamole tasted instant (I make my own guacamole so I have a good idea this was 'off') * Overall Menu: Great! Lots of choices to make and something for everyone. Note: A bit of candlelight at each table would make them easier to read :) * Service: Mixed. Two guys - one very cool and friendly and the other a bit disengaged and somewhat aloof (was it an 'off' night for him or does he dislike his job ?) * Value: Overpriced. For what we ordered, consumed, and paid for - something's gotta give here. I'd return to give it another shot possibly for lunch. There's a lot that can be done to make this a four-star spot! From my experience comes five stars. It's not easy to judge, because you won't find too many Mexican restaurants around here in Ireland. Regardless, food is very delicious. I'm a fan of fajitas and they were mama-mia delicious. Deserts were fantastic as well! You must try (can't remember the name) ice cream ball coated with sugar and heated in fryer. Tables aren't the same. The best to get is no. 7, but it is on the corner and meant for at least four people, I'd say. read more

Growing up in Michigan, many moons before fusion cuisine was cool and salsa was America's most popular condiment, I enjoyed eating at the Carlos Murphy's restaurant in Kalamazoo. (Proust had his madeleines, I had my Mexican-Irish.) Dublin's Acapulco is the delicious (but not spicy) obverse - an Irish twist on Mexican: Bring on the corn! Take out the chile peppers! The restaurant has recently undergone a redesign - perhaps to compete with the hip, new 777 across the street - and the decor is a little more ciudad, a little less fiesta than it used to be. My amiga and I enjoyed a very reasonably priced taco lunch here (5.75 euros), but you can only pick 1 type of filling (beef, chicken, feta, or pork). A combination is not offered, nor available upon request - even though they're all the same price! - I believe the Mexican word for this policy is - LOCO! Luckily, my lunch companion was willing to share. All of the tacos were tasty and freshly made. She had the shredded pork tacos. The salsa was extra mild and the pork was extra peppered. I had the feta ones, which were yummy, although feta and corn are definitely not traditional Texican ingredients. But, fish is... And for a place called Acapulco, and which is located on an island (I think La Isla Verde is what I'll call my Irish Mexican restaurant), there is a shocking lack of fish on the menu. Service was amiable but a bit slow. They WERE able to substitute flour tortillas for corn as I asked - although it seemed to flummox the server, who had to confirm it twice (but, to their credit, they did get it right. I have to say, I'm a fan of this place. I like the atmosphere, I like the food....but I don't like the prices. I'd probably dock it 1.5 stars from a 5 for that. I've always really enjoyed the food here, bar the one time I went and the enchiladas were a little too spicey for my liking but I hadn't specified spiciness and I'm not really big into spiciness. We'd usually go for the platter to share to start and there's a nice mix of food on it that I always like. The only time I was disappointed with that is when 4 of us got the bigger platter and there seemed to be more salad than proper food. But I've never had that complaint before or since. I do like the chimichanga as well. My eyes are considerably larger than my belly and I have thought I wouldn't be sufficiently sated afterwards but I only had a dessert every second or third time I'm there and usually end up sharing it. The staff are generally pretty laid back...not to be confused with being too casual about their job but they don't put you under pressure and they're generally affable, as busy restaurant staff go. Put me down for a 3.5 / 5 for here but I'm only docking on price. read more

Worst restaurant experience yet in Dublin. Got a Tex Mex burger with salsa and chilli fries. It was absolutely disgusting. There was nothing Tex Mex about it, it was simply a burger with a thick slice of cheap cheese and some lettuce. I usually don't complain, but asked the waitress what part of the cheesburger was the Tex Mex part.... to which I got a huff in reply. She then said it was suppose to come with chilli sauce, which when it arrived was just tomatoes in a little bowl. The fries had no chilli sauce, they were just fries. I might as well, and really should have, gone to Burger King. The desert my partner got, instead of a main, was deep fried ice cream... but it was'nt. It was not even hot. It may have been deep fried, but about a week before. Weird place with horrible service and food. First time in my life I have asked for my meal to be taken away, and I didn't want a replacement. P.S. This was over 6 months ago now, but was'nt on Yelp back then. read more

Apapulco is a very standard TEX MEX restaurant. Very bright inside and very close together. Apapulco is ok food wise and service wise. However it is quite expensive and for the cost I would expect a lot more. Even ordering off the early bird menu was about 40 euro for two starters and two mains and two drinks. That's just about reasonable but still a bit over priced I thought. If you order off the main menu then the cost is high. I did enjoy my meal though just wish it was quite a bit cheaper. Mind you compared to 777 across the road I guess it is quite cheap. However a short walk away is Cafe Asteca which is a lot more reasonable and a lot tastier, although asteca is traditional! read more

A sudden urge for Mexican brought me to this place. Been here before but quite a while ago. To be quite honest I'm a little surprised that they're still open. It was uncomfortably quite. Menu was a little confusing to start off with but I'm not sure, it may have just been me not seeing straight due to the hunger. (you'd swear I was dying of hunger, I was not) The prices is what surprised me the most. With so many new Mexican places that have opened up around Dublin lately, they really need to do something to match offers and meal deals. But I suppose you come in here and its more of a relaxed restaurant atmosphere. Portions sizes are not great I have to admit, when you associate it with the price that is. Little disappointed with that. We didn't have to wait long though and to be fair the staff were friendly and helpful all around and the guacamole was unreal!! Best I've had in a long time, best ever maybe.... Bottom line I guess, Expensive, quiet, slightly uncomfortable (chairs too were a nuisance), but worth a try, even just for the guacamole alone. read more

Situated in the heart of Dublin, Acapulco's interior is lavishly decorated in Mexican yellows and reds, indulging in all kinds of multi-coloured kitsch. Understandably empty on a Monday afternoon, my lunch-date and I were served quickly and were well attended to over the course of our lunch. Encouraged by the bright décor we decided to share a starter of Nachos Supreme (€5.95). swathed in guacamole and salsa with a drizzle of sour cream. These were really rather splendid and were thankfully free of the usual half-melted Easy Singles. The downside was the mildness of the salsa, which reminded me of something so humdrum as the Pringles Salsa dip. The vast amount of sauce also left half of the Nachos soggy, leaving us with no choice but to use a knife and fork to scrape them up - a rather unMexican way of enjoying Nachos for sure. For mains my lunch-date ordered Tostadas with Beef (€5.75) - a fairly flawless dish definitely filling her up for the rest of the day! I sampled the Acapulco Tortilla wraps with chicken (one of which came without the promised cheese) for €5.95. These were lukewarm and not very authentic. There was an air of the half-hearted about them certainly. The Tostadas came with guacamole and my wraps with the same insipid salsa as experienced with the Nachos. While my friend had to scoop hers off, I was lucky enough to get the cold salsa as a side dish. Being students on a budget, we declined to order desserts, but the chocolate fudge cake on our neighbour's table looked very appealing and the 'deep fried Ice-Cream' surely sounded more than worthy of note. With the tables crammed together and the lighting not particularly romantic, Acapulco is more suited to lunch than a date. The place offers great value for money - you are virtually guaranteed not to spend more than 8 euros - and we were well and truly stuffed for the rest of the day. read more

At one time Acapulco had a great thing going: warm atmosphere, a well-versed Mexican menu and some seriously cold cerveza. Ahora? Mas problemas. All that seems to be left of the original vibe here is the interior decoration. The menu, an optimistic blend of Irish and Mexican, doesn't made great culinary strides. Yes, there's burritos and fajitas and churros and piles of rice for every dish -but there's a lot missing. Flavour would be one thing; my burrito arrived to the table with no fanfare, a crusted white square only half-filled and molten hot (gracias, microonda). Service was slow as well, maybe the lack of inspiration in the kitchen affected the staff as well. Ordering a second Corona took ages, so long in fact that the rest of the table was finished before it arrived. Spirit is another. The lack of enthusiasm was infectious, by the time our server asked if we wanted dessert there was no spirit for it. I've heard great things about their fried ice cream, but honestly my heart just wasn't in it. So deep was my disappointment (maybe because my hopes for great Mexican food were so high) that I now recommend Taco Taco in the Epicurian Food Hall as the only place for real Mexican cooking in Dublin. read more
