    Chicken Soup
    Ashbel S.

I came in on a Tuesday night, it wasn't too busy. I ordered the soup thinking it was a little bowl and next thing I know it's a huge bowl full of chicken and rice and fresh tomato and warmly brothy - perfect for a cold evening. Service was great and prices are fantastic for the quality and quantity of food you get!

I'm madly in love with this sweet cafe. It overflows with heart and soul, beckoning you in from your rush toward Dame Street. The owner is the kindest person I've met in a long time, and he really takes the time to get to know every person who walks in his door. More than an owner, he's a friend to everyone. Azteca deals in sandwiches by day (you gotta make a living in Dublin somehow) but once the punters' eyes leave the first page of the menu, that's when the real fun begins. Hugo and his devoted crew of three make fresh, tasty Mexican food with love. The plates may look small, but they are so filling. Everything there overflows with freshness. This ain't the Tex-Mex of sloppy sauces, but pure Mexican, distilled into flavours. Grease-free and gorgeous. Of what I've tasted, my faves are the chicken tamales and the burritos. Pablo and Boojum it ain't, friends; these are single-meal size parcels filled with Mexican rice, refried beans and gooey cheese then grilled till all the flavours meld. Hugo also always has a changing weekend special, which is 150% worth trying. As a fun time out for my adult ESL students, I requested a cooking class for 12 on a Monday evening. Though Hugo usually accepts no more than four in these private classes, he accommodated the group without hesitation. Closing the whole location for the lot of us, he brought bowls and portable hobs into the dining area to show us what we'd be dealing with and how to do it. He walked us through a variety of chillies, then showed us how to turn fresh veg into two sauces (pico de gallo and guacamole), and followed that up with the process of making and filling a tortilla three ways (plain tortillas, sopes and quesadillas). For those not in the know: sopes are tortillas with a rim around the edge. Hugo compares them to ash trays in shape. The fillings (chicken, cheese, salsas, sour cream) sit inside that rim. Quesadillas Azteca-style are half-moon tortilla pockets folded and sealed around shredded chicken and cheese, and fried. The cooking classes are great for novices to cooking and Mexican food alike, as half of the essentials are done for you by the Azteca staff. The chicken is pre-cooked and shredded, the sopes are filled by staff once the students cook and mold the tortillas, and the quesadillas, after being assembled and folded by the students, are fried by the staff. Perhaps at a later date I'll be able to make it to an advanced cooking class... Hugo also sells Mexican ingredients including masa to make the tortillas for yourself and several kinds of chillies. As a final point, he showed the Mexico World Cup matches and now seems to favour Germany. I've also never tried his desserts, which he's recently started crowing about on Facebook. Just one more reason to go back soon.

Ok so just moved to Dublin from Minneapolis (formerly living in San Diego). All I knew as I was moving here was that Irish people dont know Mexican food and that I would surely starve. I have lived off burritos and tacos my whole life. Thanks to yesterday's visit to Cafe Azteca I am feeling much better about this move. I had a Hugo Jig Burrito which was egg and beans and everything else. I talked with Hugo and he is going to teach me how to make mole next month so I can cook Mexican food at home. He wrote "Enjoy" in sour cream on top of my burrito. I am pleased to say I DID enjoy it. Hubs was in love with his tacos al pastor served with fresh handmade corn tortillas and pineapple slivers. It reminded me of the giant pastor rotisseries topped with fresh pineapple in the Mercado Central where I used to work. I am so glad there is at least one decent place to get Mexican food. Gracias Hugo!

Have you ever tried a tamale? Do you know what a tamale is? Am I insulting the vast majority of you that do know? Apologies if that is the case but my dinner company yesterday had no clue what a tamale was and with a lot of trepidation ate some of mine when I threatened them with my butter knife. Watching their scared faces turn to surprise and then pleasure was great! Get down there and try a tamale. They come in chicken, ham and veggie and dear Lord I could eat them till the cows come home.

The first real/genuine Mexican restaurant (not just Tex Mex) I've ever seen and been to in Western Europe. You heard it. Tamales, sopes, chilaquiles, cochinita, carne al pastor, etc. Many classics made with quality ingredients, which brought back some memories. Worth every penny :D !

Café Azteca is a nice little Mexican restaurant that features an extensive breakfast offering with the morning dishes making up half of the menu. While lots of the items are what I would consider traditional breakfasts of bacon, eggs, sausage and nothing at all Mexican, the real delicious stuff is the actual Mexican food. AM offerings include huevos rancheros and tortilla soup, molletes and quesadillas. The tortilla soup was my favorite of all that we tried, it tasted really authentic and could either be loaded with chicken or veggies for those rabbit foodies out there. Lunch also features a good selection of Mexican yumminess such as chili chicken, fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, and chilaquiles accompanied by fresh guacamole, and pico de gallo (a Mexican salsa made of diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro and lime). Lunch also features some randoms - like BLTS and a sandwich called Feliz Navidad ("Merry Christmas") filled with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, bacon and coleslaw. This is in no way shape or form Mexican. One cool thing about Café Azteca is that they have cooking lessons! Lessons are free, but there is a charge of €15.00 for ingredients. As an avid cook and lover of Mexican food, I probably wouldn't join in, but it could be a fun activity for novices. Since Dublin has so few al fresco dining options, the restaurant is worth going to just to sit at one of their two outdoor tables and enjoy the weather when it's nice!

Straight up, here's what I like about Cafe Azteca: - The food - real, authentic, no bullsh*t Mexican food. Damn tasty, seriously good quality, and seeeeeriously filling. (Be prepared to roll out of there. Unless you have self control, unlike me...) - The setting - it's a small, un-fancy cafe, but this is all you need. There are no airs and graces, but it's cosy, comfortable and the floor to ceiling windows look out on Lord Edward St and offer great people watching - The star of the show - Hugo the owner. Many have spoken about Hugo in their reviews, but they are all correct. A legend of a man, he is friendly, interesting, and genuine. He will welcome you into his restaurant like it's his home, and if there is anything you need to know about Mexican culture or food - you're in the right place! All you need do is ask! Oh, Hugo also sells some great Mexican produce here too, if you want to try your hand at making some nosh yourself!

What can I say? My wife wanted to know if there was good Mexican food in Ireland. Guess what, there is! This place is legit. This isn't some gringos pumping out wannabe Mexican food; everyone here is from Mexico and has brought the recipes with them. The food is fresh and flavorful, and the people are really friendly. I didn't feel that the prices were outrageous, considering the fact that some of these ingredients probably have to be tough to acquire on this side of the Atlantic. I've paid more at froufrou places in Orange County. If you're looking to get some authentic Mexican cuisine in Dublin, THIS is the place to go.

    A chilled Modelo to start!

I have always wanted to come here. I missed the YELP event a while back and kept thinking about going. And I did. Hugo was very welcoming from the beginning and patient with my broken Spanish request for a Modelo. ANd then he kept going and I put up the white flag and reverted to English. So, I was with a group of hispanic/latin American Americans and had a lot of questions about what was what, what was good and ultimately what I should get in the end. I decided on the Sopes with chicken. They were delicious. Doesn't look like much on the plate, but I was very full (and that usually takes a lot) at the end and very happy. All in all, a great night. Great meal. Good value for what you get! Just something different from all the burritos in town. I'm looking forward to the cooking class, which I will do independently.

Al Pastor Burrito, regular size. Delicious!

While I always joke that I'm always on the hunt for a good Mexican restaurant wherever I travel in the UK, I wasn't actually headed here. Every time I walked by on previous visits to Dublin, it was always closed! So when I was making my way down the street and noticed they were open, I popped right on in! It was fairly busy, not enough that you couldn't get a table or would be waiting forever, but enough that you know the food is good. I really liked a lot of the things on the menu, but was interested by the Al Pastor Burrito, but was a bit skeptical of the pineapple. I do enjoy a Hawaiian Pizza, but I wasn't sure about this, but I ordered it anyway. I ordered a regular size burrito and it was quite filling. I was a bit disappointed that there was no extra sauces or tortilla chips on the side, just the burrito with a bit of lettuce and tomato on the side, especially because it did seem a bit pricey for just a burrito. The burrito, however, was delicious. There was not a lot of pineapple in the burrito, but enough that I decided it actually worked! While I was enjoying my burrito, I received a text from a friend asking me to bring him lunch. So I thought, I'll take him a burrito! I ordered the Rio Grande Burrito, but the 12 inch one (he's a hungry guy). I think it may have taken less time than mine did. Anyway, the owner saw my phone with the yelp application and I got a 10% discount on the order for checking in! We did get to talking because some of my students were in at the same time and we had been talking. He asked if he could give me some cards to give to the students and also told me about the cooking classes they do. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and the next time I am in Dublin, I'll be back to try some other items on the menu!

Al pastor burrito, side of guac
    William V.

I was visiting Dublin for a few days and stayed near Cafe Azteca. Being from San Diego, I was curious to see how Ireland would do mexican food. Not too bad! The proprietor was very friendly. He put on the water polo match during the olympics and I enjoyed the al pastor burrito. The pineapple tasted fresh. The side of guacamole was a good accompaniment. The burritos are served smothered in enchilada sauce, which is not how they are usually done in taquerias but overall, a good dining experience.

Such carefully and lovingly made Mexican food. Hugo the owner really cares about the experience and the story of how his food is made and where it comes from, keeping it traditional to bring customers the flavours of his home in a story of taste. Absolutely delicious meal and a warm and friendly environment. Support this man in his battle against burrito bars that bring nothing to the culinary experience! I have never seen such a dedicated man!

This place was a little out of our way, but I just knew it would be worth the diversion. I phoned and booked a table for 6pm as I wasn't sure how busy it would be on a Saturday night but I probably didn't need to actually as it wasn't too crowded. Hugo delivered us some tortilla chips and salsa while we looked over the menu, and he warned the salsa was on the spicy side. He wasn't wrong, but I loved it! The menu is amazing - one side of the menu is a range of burritos, and the other side has main dishes like taquitos, sopas, tamales, enchiladas etc. I went for the chicken taquitos - crispy tacos filled with chicken, topped with salad, sour cream and homemade mexican "pico de gallo" salsa. I was presented with a delicious plate of four taquitos which were bursting with lovely, tender chicken as well as a side of rice and refried beans. The taquitos were topped with a drizzle of sour cream and loads of pico de gallo and it was the perfect portion size. The left-over salsa from our tortillas was a good addition to give it a bit of pep too. For drinks we both had a Modelo as well as a lime jarrito (delicious Mexican soft drink). Service was amazing and Hugo seems like such a cool guy, nothing was too much bother for him. This place is very casual so don't go here expecting it to be fancy - it's bench seating and relaxed service. I'm hoping to squeeze in another trip here while I'm in Dublin, that's how much I enjoyed it.

You cannot order wrong here. A gorgeous selection of authentic Mexican food! :)

The lady running this place, while being Brazilian, knows how to make legit Mexican cuisine better than most Mexicans I know. The menu is simple, with your typical offering of tacos, burritos, and quesadillas made with all the quality and care of a 5-Star restaurant, but with the love and attention of a family-run business. One of their biggest selling points is how spicy their food can get. Whilst you can definitely go ahead and order mild, the 'super spicy' option tempts most to try it at least once. Given that my friend has a stomach of steel, I got him to try it for me and tell me all about it. He almost cried; most people do when they try this chili. But the flavor is all there, with a slight sweetness that makes it almost addictive. I can personally vouch for their chicken burrito and the quesadillas. The quesadillas are the cheesiest ones I've had yet, and the burrito packs all the flavor you could possibly want from such a concoction, with or without the sauces. However, if I may suggest a compromise between the super spicy sauce and nothing at all: They also have a homemade chipotle sauce and a jalapeño one, neither of which are overly-hot, yet both still pack all the flavor you could want to add to your taco or burrito. And while I have no complaints about my pollo asado burrito, whatsoever, I was given to try a bit of the carnitas by Tatiana, and let me just say, if you're not vegetarian, you HAVE to order this meat. It's crispy, slightly-sweet, with just a hint of cinnamon, and as succulent as they come. I almost wish I could go back in time to try it all again. I usually don't feel that way about most things in Dublin.
