    Banana matcha
    Maddie W.

When I think of academic, the one drink that's unbeatable is their banana matcha. I keep ordering it at other coffeeshops hoping for a similar one, but it's not the same!! The banana flavor truly shines and everyone I've brought here loves it and is converted. It really does taste like a banana cream pie and matcha in the best way possible. Their pandan latte is also solid! I've yet to explore more of their drinks, but heard good things about their seasonal red bean latte. Their double chocolate chip cookie is to die for. Truly such a wonderful spot!! It's a smaller space, but there's decent amount of outdoor seating. Parking is meh, it's mostly street parking and very limited spots behind the building. The driveway feels illegal with how steep it is. Be careful if your car is low!

There's a small parking lot in the back; otherwise, you can find street parking about a block away and walk a few minutes. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered the Piloncillo Latte, and it was rich, creamy, and good. Service: 5/5 Tip(s): - Small parking lot in the back - Indoor and outdoor seating available - Accept Apple Pay

We went to academic coffee and got the banana matcha latte and the guava matcha latte. Ive heard a lot about Academic coffee but today was the first time I went. Overall, it was just fine. The flavor was too milky and the cold foam to matcha latte was very off. The flavor of the guava cold foam also felt super artificial. I asked for light ice but since they were making 10 of these at the same time, they put full ice which quickly diluted the flavor. Overall, just ok, probably wouldn't return.

Double Matcha Latte & Hojicha Latte

Went to Academic Coffee to celebrate our birthday morning since it's one of my cousin's favorite matcha spots, and honestly, it made for the perfect start to the day. The café itself is small but clean, with a simple and relaxed vibe. The staff seemed really nice, which made the experience feel easy and welcoming. We ordered the double matcha latte and a hojicha latte, and I can definitely see why this is one of my cousin's favorite spots. The matcha was strong, smooth, and well balanced, especially with the double scoop, giving it a richer flavor without being too bitter. The hojicha latte had a nice roasted, nutty taste that felt really comforting and not overly sweet. It's one of those places where you can tell they care about the quality of the tea, and it really shows in the drinks. Overall, it was a great way to start our birthday, and I'd definitely come back again for a solid matcha fix.

Drinks were amazing, I only tried the banana matcha, but it was easily one of the best matcha I've had this year. Super smooth, rich, and not overly sweet. Service was friendly and quick, and the staff made the experience even better. The ambiance had a clean, modern vibe with a nice downtown feel, making it a great spot to relax. Prices felt fair for the quality you're getting. Stopped by Academic Coffee in downtown San Jose and it definitely lived up to the hype. Will definitely be back. 5/5 stars from me.

    Pandan Latte

I visited Academic Coffee for the first time with a couple of friends. Finding parking was difficult in the area. I didn't wait too long to try their pandan latte with oat milk, and it was excellent! I wish that the pandan flavor came through a bit more strongly, but it was still sweet enough and balanced well with the espresso taste. The oat milk also added a nice creaminess without overpowering the drink. The drink was unique and stronger in coffee flavor. The area itself is cute, with seating available to work at or hang out with friends.

Strawberry matcha and banana matcha latte

Absolutely obsessed with their banana matcha. Their banana cream is heavenly. Perfectly sweet and creamy enough to mix with the drink to sip on. Parking is kind of tricky here. There's like 7-8 parking spots in the lot, but the sign says you can only park for 30 minutes. I recommend parking on the street or across the street at bank of america.

    Lizey N.

Matcha here is good quality and just lightly sweetened. The strawberry matcha is also good but sometimes can be tart or sweet, not always consistent so I usually just go for the regular matcha which is still good, earthy, and balanced. I like the little seating area in the back to be able to do work, there's a few seats, a couch, a table, and bookshelf which is cute.

Academic Coffee is one of the recurring places that frequent my TikTok so when an opportunity arose when my husband and I were in the area, I knew we had to stop by. I didn't realize the proximity to Valley Fair mall so I suspect that's why the line was so long on a Saturday afternoon, too. Limited spots on the street in front of the coffee shop, but there's parking in the nearby neighborhoods. I opted for their banana matcha and my husband got their vanilla latte. The banana cream on top of the matcha tasted delicious and went too quickly, but I get why it's hyped. The vanilla latte tasted good and not overly sweet. Overall, the ambiance is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. The line can be long, but does go by pretty quick.

Loved this coffee place! We got three matches: 2 banana cream matches and 1 guava matcha and it was great! If you're into sweet over bitter matcha, I recommend this place!! I really don't like bitter matcha so the sweetness of the drink and the cream foam on top was a great combo! There isn't much place to sit inside though(?) like if you plan to study I wouldn't recommend this place or sit outside-- but the drinks are great. Would come again!

Drinks: 3.5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Academic Coffee has a nice vibe and service was great! Weather was perfect for outdoor seating. Matcha was more grassy than expected. The matcha strawberry latte tasted better after mixing. Matcha banana latte w/ almond milk was not bad. Probably liked it more than the strawberry one. Was not crazy about any of their coffees. Pandan latte had a nutty flavor but didn't taste like the typical pandan flavor. Pistakio cream latte was ok. Also couldn't appreciate the pistachio flavor. Didn't finish either of the coffees. Convenient place to grab a drink, but not sure if I would go out of my way to come back here.

Yay I am so glad that academic coffee opened up a location right across from Valley fair Mall. This location is newer, but they brought back the guava Matcha and everyone is very excited. It definitely lived up to the high. I recommend getting the one with the cold foam on top. I also tried the corn, scone and blueberry cinnamon muffin, which were nothing to write home about they were all right, but don't seem like anything special. There is limited parking behind the restaurant. We can also park anywhere on the street next to the shop. There's limited seating inside, but there's a lot of outdoor seating near a nice little community garden outside.

Banana cream matcha latte & guava cream matcha latte
    Amia A.

Academic Coffee has consistently been one of my favorite matcha spots, and I recommend them to my friends all the time. Their matcha is always delicious and perfectly balanced. I used to order the guava cream matcha latte every visit (still heartbroken that it was discontinued ), but now I always get the banana cream matcha latte, which is just as amazing. The interior of this location is so cozy and inviting, making it a great place to do any type of desk work or just relax with a drink. On top of that, the service has always been kind and welcoming, and I genuinely feel appreciated as a customer every time I go. If you're looking for a matcha spot with great drinks, a comfortable atmosphere, and friendly people, this place is definitely worth visiting.

As for the inside, it's a spacious place with plenty of seating which is nice, although the music feels a little loud. Don't sleep on the black pepper sausage danish: the croissant dough is crisp and flaky, and doesn't get soggy when baked around the sausage. It's comparable in execution to the Croissant Hot Dog served at Dominique Ansel Las Vegas (in Caesar's Palace), but at a way more accessible price point. Which isn't to say this place is cheap; like many artisanal bakeries in California, it comes with a premium price tag, but at least it's not Dominique Ansel pricy. Croissante's croissant dough baked goods (viennoiserie) is pun-intended "proof" that you get what you pay for. The dining space is limited and lively. Conversing is a little tough, but if you just need a place to sit while eating, it's just right. Extra special shout out this time to Dill who had informed me the fried chicken dishes today would be an hour and a half wait. After deciding there wasn't anything I wanted more than the Fried Chicken and Spiced Croffle (croissant dough baked in a waffle iron) and was happy to wait, they were nice enough to check in with the kitchen and see if it could be made sooner than that. I didn't expect to be accommodated, so I was happy they were able to do that. You get two chicken thighs and croffles per order. It's enough for two light eaters to share.

The place was situated in a quiet plaza just outside of Lawrence Expressway. There's ample parking but it doesn't feel like the location is suitable for a cafe where you can picture sitting inside looking through some big windows facing a busy pedestrian walkway. However, once I stepped inside, I was surprised at how zen and peaceful the decorations were and how fitting it was for a cozy and quiet cafe hangout. The cake shelf was surprisingly busy. And this is where I took one star out because the lines were confusing and the staff skipped me to talk to the group behind me while I was clearly the next to be helped. Luckily another staff member came out from the back kitchen and jumped in to help. The staff spoke fluent mandarin. I was interested in their box cakes. A few of the yelpers raved about their soy milk cake and luckily they had one out for sampling. It was covered with lots of cream and the cake layer was soft and moist, but it was still slightly too sweet for me and I felt that it lacked the tofu kind of soy flavor. Then, I spotted on their menu that they have a black sesame matcha box cake, and black sesame is always my favorite, so I asked for it. They had the last one left! The staff said she had never tried it so she couldn't tell me if it is less sweet than the soy milk cake. Since it was the last one available and I already sampled the soy cake, I decided to give it a try. I am happy that I did. The cake was filled with matcha mousse and tasted light and aromatic with the jasmine kind of matcha flavor. It is definitely less sweet. Unfortunately, it doesn't have as much black sesame as I'd like. But overall, the cake flavor is the kind that I like, subtle, moist, and not too sweet. $38 for a box cake of 4x4 is a bit pricey, but I'm glad that I gave it a try. The cakes were freshly made and tasted best the same day of purchase. They also recommend refrigerating the cake and consuming it within a day or two.

While I appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet, it was very mild in flavor. It tasted more like a simple sponge cake with a persimmon filling in the center, and overall, it felt quite underwhelming. In contrast, the persimmon crepe cake was much better. Each layer had persimmon cream and jam, which gave it a stronger and more pronounced persimmon flavor without being overly sweet. Overall, it's a cute cake shop worth checking out if you're looking for unique flavors in the South Bay. Parking: Plenty of parking available in the lot.

Our group ended up sitting outside since a lot of the larger tables indoors were occupied by only one or two people. You can grab your own chairs by the bathroom if you have a big group. I liked that menu was extensive. Besides shaved ice, they also had boba, tea, ice cream, and taiyaki. We waited maybe around 10 minutes for our order. We checked out a couple of games available near the front for customers to borrow. We shared one large mango cheesecake shaved ice and one medium Biscoff shaved ice. Mango cheesecake - This was AMAZING. My first bite tasted like heaven. The flavors worked together so well and the cheesecake wasn't overly sweet. The mangoes were ripe and sweet. Biscoff shaved ice - I enjoy Biscoff in general, but this didn't compare to the mango cheesecake at all. It was too sweet and more icey/watery. Chamomile tea drink -This paired nicely with the cold desserts. It was warm and refreshing at the same time. I almost never order nor see chamomile tea on menus so this was cool. One note: there was a water station available, but the cups were SO small. Maybe 2-3 gulps of water per cup. I wish they were bigger. You have a wall of (faux) jelly jars of all different flavors once you enter. This place feels very revamped. A "red carpet" greets you upon your approach to the counter. And though there is staff who I suppose could take your order, there is one kiosk tablet to place your order. Lots of seating inside (9 tables). We came on a Sunday afternoon and though the wall display says "SO MANY FLAVORS TO CHOOSE FROM", the inventory behind the glass says "meh not so much". I guess most of the different flavors had sold out already by 3 pm, like some of my favorite seasonals (dragon fruit, ube). However, I was able to get the osmanthus oolong which I love. The taro coconut was light and refreshing so I enjoyed that as well! Today I decided to venture and buy the durian but I have not YET tried it. It wasn't too busy so after placing the order, they had our order in less than 5 minutes. My puppers got to accompany me into the store too. I wish melo melo would open up stores out in the central valley and Sacramento area too.
