Drinks good. Parking bad. Ordered a banana cream matcha less ice and less sweet, the banana cream is delicious with the crumbles on top to add to the extra delicious texture! Next time I'll get regular sweet but I wanted to be conscious of my sugar intake, it was still a good sweet level if you like less sweet drinks regardless! Parking is so bad, just park across the street or along the street, there's only a couple spots to park and limited to 30 minutes Also lines can get long on the weekend so be prepared to wait but it goes by pretty fast the drinks are made quicker than I thought. After ordering I barely waited a couple of minutes
Met up a friend here. First time. Parking lot fills up quick so you have to street park. We went on a weekend early. Around ten people in line. Workers are fine. We got two drinks and they came out faster than I thought. We sat outside. One Matcha banana cream and One Espresso banana cream. Pretty good drinks. Would come back to try the other drinks.
My daughter likes their matcha. When we are in town, we usually have to go downtown to pick it up. Glad this location opened. Parking right behind the shop is very limited. Some spaces on the street but plenty across the street. For a Saturday late morning, it was not that long of a line. We got to the front and really like the cashier. He's so knowledgeable about the drinks. Provided a bunch of stickers for us to take which I did grab 2. And was just nice and pleasant. There were 2 small bench inside for you to wait for your drinks. But they are pretty quick I'm making the drinks. Enjoyed their espresso banana iced drink. They have a small room on the side that you can chill or meet up friends. In front, plenty of outside seatings to enjoy your drink. Great service and drinks.
Definitely a solid matcha spot! Well known for their banana cream matcha, I opted for the guava matcha because I love tropical flavors. I loved how they pack the cream tops onto the drinks, and the vibrant guava hue was definitely very aesthetically pleasing. In terms of taste, the matcha is quite good. However, I found that their matcha in general is on the thicker side, which it gives the drink an overall thicker texture. If you like your matcha on the more runny side, I would suggest getting a drink without the cream top to minimize that thick texture. However, I really liked it overall and if you're a student at San Jose State, they also have a location close by that you can walk to and study at.
This is the go-to place for matcha in the area! I like that they offer creative flavor combinations you don't find at most matcha shops. It's tucked away in a park area that almost looks like a rec room and sits in front of an apartment complex, so it's easy to miss if you don't know it's there. Parking is also very limited, so I usually end up parking in the neighboring streets or getting dropped off. The times I've visited, the line has been manageable and the wait hasn't been too long. I usually take it to-go, but there are tables inside and outside where some people hang out and/or do work. When I first visited last year, I tried their seasonal melon matcha for the first time, and I was so happy to see they brought it back for a limited time. I was skeptical at first, but it ended up being one of my favorites! It's not overly sweet and doesn't leave a lingering aftertaste. I actually prefer it without the matcha cream top, so you can taste more of the melon. I've also tried the guava matcha, but I thought the guava overpowered the matcha, and the cream top made it a little too thick for my liking. I've also tried the banana matcha latte that went viral. It's good, but nothing particularly memorable. Overall, the matcha here has been consistently solid and is definitely worth trying. Just be prepared for the rough parking situation.
"Guava matcha" attracted me to this location. The drink was definitely unique. I do remember liking the cream. The matcha part wasn't very memorable though. The coffee my husband originally wanted was out when we got there, so he just got an Americano. There's parking available/reserved for cafe customers in the lot behind the entrance, but it might be tricky to find space if they're busy.
The service was really fast here! We ordered 4 drinks, the Madagascar latte, matcha banana cream, melon matcha & guava matcha and everyone was very pleased with their drinks! All high quality drinks! Looking forward to coming back to try more drinks again
Street parking only. Small - cozy seating inside, they have seating outside as well (no tables) Not great for groups in my opinion. But the inside was actually pretty quiet. I ordered the Banana Matcha. The soft top with bread crumbs is the star. The matcha itself was okay but mixed with the top, it really pulled it together. The size is perfect. I had a 10 minute walk back to my hotel and still had half left. There was a few people ahead of me and I spent 10 minutes IF THAT waiting. So id say fast service. If im ever back in the area id try their lattes. Get there early if you want pastries. Its located on the corner of a busy street so try to turn into the closest side street. Its downtown so there's a lot of one-way turns
I really liked this cafe! They have a small, but well crafted and unique drink menu. I love the fun drinks they have available! I tried the guava matcha and it was really good! The matcha on its own was slightly grassy for my taste, but mixed with the guava cream was really delicious. The flavor came through really well and was perfectly sweet. So far this is one of my favorite matchas in San Jose. They don't really have a food menu here, but there are some pastries that look pretty good. I can't vouch for how they taste however. The drinks came out super quickly and the servers were really sweet! I also really liked how we could take the drinks outside to the large seating area and enjoy the drinks, but there is also some indoor seating. Parking might be a little annoying but there are some spots out front of this location. Overall I really liked this spot and I definitely want to come back to try some of their other unique drinks!
There's a small parking lot in the back; otherwise, you can find street parking about a block away and walk a few minutes. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. I've been wanting to try Academic for the longest time but always found myself delaying my visit because of the comments I've heard about their parking lot lol. (They were right... the parking lot does suck!) If you're lucky enough to come at a quieter time and are able to snag a spot, I definitely think it'd be worth the visit! I ordered the guava matcha. As someone who isn't necessarily the biggest fan of matcha, I actually thought the drink was solid. The matcha had a lot of depth and the guava flavor was STRONG. My drink came out only a few minutes after I ordered; they're super quick to make drinks here, which is appreciated! They have a few seats inside the cafe and some outdoor seating if you plan on staying and hanging out. It is quite expensive here though - my matcha ended up being closer to $10. Not sure if I'd go out of my way to come again given how busy it typically gets but was definitely worth a try!
I was excited to academic coffee as I've heard many great reviews. Parking was easy to find on a near by street. For drinks I ordered the Pandan coffee but it mainly just taste like coffee with no Pandan flavor.
I've heard my friends raving about the Banana Matcha for a minute, so we decided to try! We went to their second location? Huge plus that it's right next to the park. It was super convenient if you're out walking your dogs like we were. I'm usually a fan of their Pandan, but I think I have a new favorite. The banana cream and Guava cream paired with matcha is a total game changer. You can tell they aren't using cheap ingredients; the matcha is high quality and the cream is actually thick and rich (hopefully its from real fruits haha) which makes such a difference for a latte. It's definitely on the pricier side( about $9 per drink if you want to substitute with other milk), but for the quality and the vibes, it's 100% worth it. Service was fast and great! Plenty seating indoor and outdoor but parking spaces were limited.
I've been here a couple of times with my husband, and hands down, this is one of our favorite matcha spots in the Bay Area! The place has indoor and outdoor seatings but limited. I've seen people study or do work in there but it's not the most quiet place. Staff is always friendly to us when we're ordering drinks. We tried the Guava Matcha with Guava Cream, and this was easily a 10/10 for me. The li hing powder on top adds such a unique, slightly tangy flavor that makes the drink really stand out. This is the drink we always order whenever we visit this place. We also tried the Double Matcha Melon Matcha, which was good, but I still preferred the guava matcha. My husband likes the Melon Matcha better though. The Vietnamese Coffee was very strong for me and on the less-sweet side. The Pandan Latte wasn't really for us either. It wasn't very sweet, and we didn't get much pandan flavor. We've definitely had better pandan lattes elsewhere. The drinks aren't cheap, but I think they're worth trying, especially the guava matcha and double melon matcha. Lines can get pretty long on weekends, and parking is free but limited. Definitely a spot I'd come back to for the guava matcha! read more

Tried the guava matcha and the banana cream matcha, the guava took the win hands down, the banana cream was too subtle and didn't taste like much. The matcha itself was solid. Staff was friendly and super helpful in recommending a drink to me. Folks making the drinks also got them out fairly quickly despite the line. Unfortunately, I came late in the morning and basically all the pastries were out - next time! Location is convenient, but parking is terrible - I got lucky and snagged a spot as someone was leaving. Seating inside is not bad but also not super spacious, however there also several tables outside, with a nice grassy area nearby as well. The coffee shop doesn't have its own bathroom, but you can ask for a code to use the building's bathroom if needed. Given the parking situation, I probably won't be frequenting this place too much, but it is definitely worth a visit for a solid matcha latte as a treat every once in a while. I do want to find a chance to come back and get a chance at a pastry. read more

Their pistachio specials from the last couple months were very good. However, it appears they've moved into guava season. I like this coffee shop, I've been coming here and especially the San Jose location for a long time. I appreciate consistency in my coffee shops and to be honest, academic seems to be losing the plot. Today I ordered one basic drink and one specialty- a vanilla latte and the guava matcha drink; both were just mid. The guava matcha is beautiful aesthetically, but the guava was way too overpowering, you couldn't taste the matcha. Also no oven to heat up the pastries. I still like their alum rock beans and purchase them regularly. They used to give you a drip coffee or espresso shot with purchase but I guess not anymore. Overall this spot appears to be leaning towards style over substance, but I hope they don't go that route. This review is a 3.5 but I rounded up because of the pistacho specials from the last couple months were very good. read more
When I think of academic, the one drink that's unbeatable is their banana matcha. I keep ordering it at other coffeeshops hoping for a similar one, but it's not the same!! The banana flavor truly shines and everyone I've brought here loves it and is converted. It really does taste like a banana cream pie and matcha in the best way possible. Their pandan latte is also solid! I've yet to explore more of their drinks, but heard good things about their seasonal red bean latte. Their double chocolate chip cookie is to die for. Truly such a wonderful spot!! It's a smaller space, but there's decent amount of outdoor seating. Parking is meh, it's mostly street parking and very limited spots behind the building. The driveway feels illegal with how steep it is. Be careful if your car is low! read more
Went to Academic Coffee to celebrate our birthday morning since it's one of my cousin's favorite matcha spots, and honestly, it made for the perfect start to the day. The café itself is small but clean, with a simple and relaxed vibe. The staff seemed really nice, which made the experience feel easy and welcoming. We ordered the double matcha latte and a hojicha latte, and I can definitely see why this is one of my cousin's favorite spots. The matcha was strong, smooth, and well balanced, especially with the double scoop, giving it a richer flavor without being too bitter. The hojicha latte had a nice roasted, nutty taste that felt really comforting and not overly sweet. It's one of those places where you can tell they care about the quality of the tea, and it really shows in the drinks. Overall, it was a great way to start our birthday, and I'd definitely come back again for a solid matcha fix. read more
Academic has been in my coffee/matcha rotation for a while now and does not disappoint. Between their coffee or matcha, both are a great choice at either location. Service is always very kind, and I would say that this location is more for socializing than studying. read more
Drinks were amazing, I only tried the banana matcha, but it was easily one of the best matcha I've had this year. Super smooth, rich, and not overly sweet. Service was friendly and quick, and the staff made the experience even better. The ambiance had a clean, modern vibe with a nice downtown feel, making it a great spot to relax. Prices felt fair for the quality you're getting. Stopped by Academic Coffee in downtown San Jose and it definitely lived up to the hype. Will definitely be back. 5/5 stars from me. read more
I visited Academic Coffee for the first time with a couple of friends. Finding parking was difficult in the area. I didn't wait too long to try their pandan latte with oat milk, and it was excellent! I wish that the pandan flavor came through a bit more strongly, but it was still sweet enough and balanced well with the espresso taste. The oat milk also added a nice creaminess without overpowering the drink. The drink was unique and stronger in coffee flavor. The area itself is cute, with seating available to work at or hang out with friends. read more
Absolutely obsessed with their banana matcha. Their banana cream is heavenly. Perfectly sweet and creamy enough to mix with the drink to sip on. Parking is kind of tricky here. There's like 7-8 parking spots in the lot, but the sign says you can only park for 30 minutes. I recommend parking on the street or across the street at bank of america. read more
Matcha here is good quality and just lightly sweetened. The strawberry matcha is also good but sometimes can be tart or sweet, not always consistent so I usually just go for the regular matcha which is still good, earthy, and balanced. I like the little seating area in the back to be able to do work, there's a few seats, a couch, a table, and bookshelf which is cute. read more
Academic Coffee is one of the recurring places that frequent my TikTok so when an opportunity arose when my husband and I were in the area, I knew we had to stop by. I didn't realize the proximity to Valley Fair mall so I suspect that's why the line was so long on a Saturday afternoon, too. Limited spots on the street in front of the coffee shop, but there's parking in the nearby neighborhoods. I opted for their banana matcha and my husband got their vanilla latte. The banana cream on top of the matcha tasted delicious and went too quickly, but I get why it's hyped. The vanilla latte tasted good and not overly sweet. Overall, the ambiance is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. The line can be long, but does go by pretty quick. read more

Drinks: 3.5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Academic Coffee has a nice vibe and service was great! Weather was perfect for outdoor seating. Matcha was more grassy than expected. The matcha strawberry latte tasted better after mixing. Matcha banana latte w/ almond milk was not bad. Probably liked it more than the strawberry one. Was not crazy about any of their coffees. Pandan latte had a nutty flavor but didn't taste like the typical pandan flavor. Pistakio cream latte was ok. Also couldn't appreciate the pistachio flavor. Didn't finish either of the coffees. Convenient place to grab a drink, but not sure if I would go out of my way to come back here. read more
First time trying Academic Coffee during the holidays. Went early at 10am on a weekend with no line. A line started forming around 10:30am. Location is on ground level on a main road so it might be easy to drive right past it. Couldn't figure out which lot was thr right lot to park at so we found street parking (which is very limited). Loved how they're right next to a beautiful open park, and across the street from Valley Fair Mall. Some indoor table and bench seating, but limited. Staff are friendly, and patient even with a forming line. I had an order of 5 drinks and 3 pastries (they don't offer warming up, not big deal for us). Took about 10 minutes for our drinks, wasn't too bad of a wait. I had the Iced Banana Matcha which was on my wishlist to try for some time. The banana creme is worth the hype, the matcha was good but the banana creme really stole the show. Their berry almond croissant was 5/5. Would get again. We also got the chocolate croissant and a curry-potato pastry. read more
Academic Coffee has consistently been one of my favorite matcha spots, and I recommend them to my friends all the time. Their matcha is always delicious and perfectly balanced. I used to order the guava cream matcha latte every visit (still heartbroken that it was discontinued ), but now I always get the banana cream matcha latte, which is just as amazing. The interior of this location is so cozy and inviting, making it a great place to do any type of desk work or just relax with a drink. On top of that, the service has always been kind and welcoming, and I genuinely feel appreciated as a customer every time I go. If you're looking for a matcha spot with great drinks, a comfortable atmosphere, and friendly people, this place is definitely worth visiting. read more
Academic Coffee is an odd little spot. It's right in the driveway entrance to a parking garage for an apartment building, and the entrance is kinda tucked around the opposite side of the building from the parking. Also, beware if you have a car that's even remotely low to the ground. The entrance to the parking lot is extremely steep, and you can bottom out very easily. All that strangeness aside, the drinks here seem pretty solid. Although a bit expensive. I got the banana cream matcha latte and was pretty happy with it. The shop itself was pretty nice, but a little small. I was also a little bummed that they didn't have any sort of microwave or oven to quickly heat up their backed goods. Overall, not a bad spot. read more
Great place to get coffee, from my last review I've found that there's parking in the residential street parking area in back, or you can park at VF (beyond their limited private parking and street parking, that is). Their matcha banana latte was recommended to me and I also saw a lot of people ordering it as well. It was the first time I saw a long line for this place, it was maybe a 5-10 minute wait. Last I was here I was trying to find space to do work/take a meeting call. To the nice and kind person standing behind me in line that I had asked for a recommendation, that recommended the Matcha Banana Latte, thank you very much! read more
Love! Their parking lot is very small and usually full so parking is a bit difficult. I've tried their guava cream matcha, banana cream matcha, and hojicha. I personally am a fan of guava so I really enjoyed the guava cream flavor. Their banana cream is also very well made it had a strong flavor that paired well with the matcha without it tasting artificial. They have some seatings both inside and outside, which was really nice. read more
I've been wanting to try Academic Coffee for a long time, and finally got a chance to today! I got a banana cream latte, and woww. The banana cream isn't too sweet and the latte pairs together perfectly with it. The parking is limited behind the store and on the street. There was a line out the door but once you order the wait isn't too bad (only about 3-5 minutes). Limited seating indoors but ample amount of chairs and tables outside! read more
Used to be an absolute favorite and go to for the easy parking, great drinks, and proximity, but slowly have been trying other spots. I have always loved the banana matcha along with their seasonal drinks like the melon matcha or double matcha, but have felt like the coffee quality and dial can be inconsistent occasionally making the coffee sour. Understandably with the increase of demand the price has also gone up for the matcha to maintain quality, but because of that I have also started looking elsewhere. But I also have always appreciated how sweet and kind the staff is, always a wonderful interaction at the counter! I usually park the street over or around and walk through the community garden or apartments to reach Academic, but usually the parking lot itself is pretty full. read more
Line is usually always out the door but I decided to stop by before some shopping at Valley Fair. The cashier was very knowledgeable about the menu and chatted with us about our plans for the weekend while ringing us up. I asked for less sweet for my latte and it was a good level. The other lattes without modifications tasted a bit too sweet. Cafe area had some seating with a very clean sleek look. Also some outdoor tables and benches to chat over coffee! read more
I enjoy academic very much, it is on my way to work and has always the best matcha drinks. My favorite which I hope they bring back the double melon matcha. Their strawberry matcha is also very good! I also enjoy hojicha a lot, and recently got their honicha with their kinako cream too. Today unfortunately one of their drinks was not as great to me, which was the hojicha with the citrus cream. I love anything lemony, but i think the acidity of the lemon with the mix of dairy and the drink, did not mix well. Both flavors separately are good, but a bit sad I couldn't continue to enjoy my drink as much. Besides this drink, all of their other items are great!! Always great service and great area. read more
We went to academic coffee and got the banana matcha latte and the guava matcha latte. Ive heard a lot about Academic coffee but today was the first time I went. Overall, it was just fine. The flavor was too milky and the cold foam to matcha latte was very off. The flavor of the guava cold foam also felt super artificial. I asked for light ice but since they were making 10 of these at the same time, they put full ice which quickly diluted the flavor. Overall, just ok, probably wouldn't return. read more
Love that this location is right across the street from Valleyfair Mall. There's a parking lot on the side. Finally got to try their banana matcha. It was delicious. Sad I missed the seasonal flavor - guava matcha. The place was tiny. Service was good. read more
I heard amazing things about Academic Coffee in SJ downtown that I was really excited to try! Hot Matcha oat latte - no latte art but the micro foam on top was delicious and smooth. Mild, smooth, and slightly nutty matcha latte. Could be stronger. Hojicha oat latte - unmemorable, weak and watered down, we didn't like this at all. Could be improve if it's stronger as well! Both drinks weren't memorably amazing that we would go back to. But it's an ok option to try if you're looking around Santana row and the mall! read more
